TWENTY NINE.
After cleaning up the mess from last night, Stefan had invited Elena over to explain what had happened. Which Jasmine found absurd since Stefan says he want to keep her out of it, but here he is, giving her a play by play of the vampires that came in and attacked them.
Damon finished up boarding up the window and turned to look at the three of them, "I say we go to Pearl's, bust down the door, and annihilate the idiot that attacked us last night."
Used to his brother's thoughts on impulse, Stefan sighed, "yeah and then what? We turn to the rest of the house of vampires and say, 'oops. Sorry?'"
Damon furrowed his eyebrows and pointed at the disinterested vampire lounging on the couch, "that's why we have Jasmine. She can do a little magic spell and poof, problem solved."
Jasmine raised her glass and gave him a sarcastic smile, "nice to know I'm useful for something."
Elena shook her head and looked at Damon with disdain, "I can't believe you made a deal with her."
"We didn't." Jasmine sat up and looked at the doppelganger, "I made sure he wasn't so easily persuaded. Plus, he realized that I can give him what Pearl had offered."
"And what's that?"
Damon smirked as he crossed the room to sit next to Jasmine, "she's going to help me get Katherine back."
Scowling, Elena walked towards them with her arms crossed, "of course she is. Damon gets what he wants, as usual. No matter who he hurts in the process."
"Technically, no one is getting hurt when I perform a locator spell. But if you're referring to the tomb, then yeah, some people were hurt." Jasmine chuckled at Elena's unamused expression.
Damon placed his hands on his knees as he leaned forward, "okay, how long are you going to be snarky and blame me for turning your birth mother into a vampire?"
With sarcasm dripping from her words, Elena scowled at him, "I'm not blaming you, Damon. I've accepted the fact that you're a self-serving psychopath with no redeeming qualities."
Damon frowned and leaned back in his seat, "ouch."
Jasmine patted his back and laughed, "I don't know, he's got some redeeming qualities." Then, she smirked at Elena, "and you're no Susie Sunshine either, sweetheart."
Stefan clapped his hands and pulled Elena a bit backwards to stand beside him, "this isn't being very productive. We're gonna figure out a way to deal with Pearl and the vampires, yeah?
Jasmine and Damon stood from their spot and left the couple by themselves. They went to their separate bedrooms to get ready for the day or to just freshen up. Jasmine sat in her bed and pulled out her phone after feeling it vibrate. She smiled when she noticed the contact name.
Matt Donovan
Hey, I go to break in 10 minutes, mind coming over?
Jasmine
Sure, be there soon x
She got off the bed and walked down the stairs when she heard the front door close. Stefan was sitting on the couch and contemplating what they were going to do about Frederick. She sat down beside him and looked around the room, "where's Elena?"
He shook his head, trying to get back to reality and looked at her, "um, she went home. She said she had some homework to catch up on."
"Bummer, I was starting to enjoy her presence."
Laughter interrupted them as Damon descended the stairs, a smirk plastered on his face, "I can hear the sarcasm all the way up to my room. So, what are we going to do about our little problem?"
Jasmine stood from her spot and walked over to the door to collect her coat. She slid it on and rummaged through her pockets for her keys, "we can figure that out when I come back. I have to go see someone."
Damon looked at her confused, "who do you have to go see? You don't have any friends in town."
Jasmine ignored his comment with a roll of her eyes as she located her keys. Stefan stood from his spot, too, and walked up beside her, "I have to go, too. That guy did a number on me last night when he stabbed me and snapped my neck. I got to get my strength back up." He grabbed his own coat and slid it on, "we'll talk when we get back?"
"Alright. Give my regards to the squirrels."
Jasmine let out a laugh as Stefan opened the door for her and they both exited the Salvatore Boarding House.
----
Jasmine entered the Mystic Grill and immediately began searching for the blonde, blue eyed male. She smiled when she noticed him at one of the booths, waving her over. She stuffed her keys into her pocket, and then made her way over to him.
"Hey, Donovan."
"Hi, Jasmine." He stood up from his seat, so he could greet her with a kiss, which Jasmine smiled into. Matt gestured to the seat in front of him and Jasmine sat down.
"So, what did you want to talk about?"
Matt fiddled with his fingers before he looked up at her, "it's my mom."
"Is she okay?"
He nodded quickly, reassuring her, "yeah, it's just that I yelled at her last night. You know, I felt like the parent yelling at the screwed up kid."
Jasmine nodded in understanding and shrugged, "sometimes we have to give our own parents some tough love."
He still looked guilty and unconvinced as he tilted his head, "yeah, but I just... I worry that if I push too hard, then she'll take off again. 'Cause that's her M.O. Just like my sister, Vicki, who I haven't heard from since she left."
Jasmine reached over the table and held his hand, she sighed at the contact, "I don't have much experience dealing with blood relatives, but from the people I now call family, I've learned it's better to let them do their own thing. They'll eventually come back to you because they love you. You just have to let them get lost for a bit before they find their way back to you."
Matt stared at her with wonder. He couldn't believe someone could have such an old soul and know just what to say to soothe them. He smiled at their hands and looked up at her, "you never really talked about your family last night."
Jasmine shrugged and removed her hand from his grasp, "what's there to say? I had an abusive father and a naïve mother. Both are dead, by the way."
Matt grimaced and leaned forward, "I'm so sorry."
She sent him a warm smile and reached over the table to caress his cheek, "don't worry about it... it was a long time ago."
Matt still felt bad. He understood the whole lack of parental guidance, but having his parents actually hit him? That was something he was grateful that neither he nor Vicki ever experienced. His thoughts were interrupted when Jasmine grabbed his hand.
"Just give your mom some time. Maybe she'll change for the better."
He let out a small chuckle as he plastered a look of disbelief on his features, "that'll be a surprise, but I hope."
----
They talked for the next two hours, even while he was working, they never stopped talking. Jasmine got to know his interests and vice versa. She knew there was still more to know about him, there were always different layers to people, Jasmine learned that over the centuries. Their talk was interrupted though, when Damon called her.
"What, Damon?" The next couple words were a blur as Damon's panicked voice rang through the earpiece, "hey, hey, slow down. I can barely understand a word you're saying."
Matt looked at her with concern, but he didn't comment, not wanting to intrude. Damon finally regained his breath and spoke at a normal tone, "the tomb vampires took Stefan. They have them at the farm house Pearl was talking about. Jasmine... they're torturing him."
Jasmine clutched onto the bottom of her seat as she took in his words. Her breathing became rapid and her eyes narrowed as anger started to take over her senses, "where are you?"
"Heading to the high school. We're hoping that Mr. Saltzman can lend an extra hand."
Without another word, Jasmine hung up the phone and got up from her seat, quickly. She looked up at Matt apologetically, "I have to go. I'm sorry."
"Don't worry about it. It sounded urgent. Just be careful, it looks like the storm has gotten worse."
"Please, a storm won't cause me any harm." She leaned over and gave him a chaste kiss before walking fast out of the Grill.
----
She parked her car close to the entrance, not caring that it was in a handicapped spot. She sped into the high school and found Alaric in a heated stare down with Damon.
"Yeah, the part where I try and kill you again. Only this time, I don't miss."
Jasmine rolled her eyes and walked into the classroom, "careful, Mr. Saltzman, that ring isn't super glued to your finger."
Elena stared at her for a moment before turning to Alaric, "Mr. Saltzman, please. It's Stefan."
Alaric shook his head and shrugged his shoulders, "sorry, Elena. It's not my problem."
Damon scoffed from his spot and walked towards him, "that's a shame because the woman in charge of the crowd can help you find your wife."
Alaric stared at him for a second before scowling, "you're lying."
"Am I? Why don't you ask her for yourself?" When Alaric didn't make a move to help them, Damon rolled his eyes, "coward. Come on, let's go."
Jasmine let out an exasperated breath, wanting to get to Stefan already. They all walked towards the door until Alaric sighed loudly, "wait! Alright, I'll go."
Alaric spent the next couple minutes displaying his weapons and explaining what they were to the three. Damon looked at him amused as he was engrossed in what he was saying.
"Teacher by day, vampire hunter by night."
Jasmine sat at the edge of the table and grabbed a makeshift stake in her hands, "kinda hot."
Elena picked up one of Alaric's many weapons and examined it, "what's this?"
Alaric grabbed it from her grasp and placed it back in its place, "that is a tranquilizer dart filled with vervain."
Damon placed the darts he had in hand back on the table, "just get me and Jasmine in."
Jasmine groaned and hopped off the desk, "remind me again why we need him to get us inside? I thought it was a vampire hideout."
"It is but unfortunately, the house is owned by a woman who has been compelled to not let me inside."
"Alright, just get us inside, so we can get Stefan." Jasmine's patience was beginning to wear thin just thinking about what those vampires were doing to Stefan. It made her blood boil and the only thing she wanted to do was rip apart the people who hurt him.
"I'm going with you guys." Elena crossed her arms and held a vervain dart tight in her hand.
"Sorry, princess, but you'll just get in the way." Jasmine rolled her eyes and pushed past her, ready to leave.
Elena scowled at her, "you need me. You could distract them, and then I'll get Stefan out."
Before Jasmine could respond, Damon stepped in, "you'll get yourself killed. You're not going in there."
"Wait, maybe she can go in. Provide the distraction instead." Elena looked at her surprised, not expecting her to want her in the plan, and then Jasmine smirked at her. "I'm sure you're willing to open up a vein in the sake of saving Stefan, right?"
"We're not doing that, Jasmine." Damon ran a hand down his face, exasperated at the fact that Jasmine would so willingly put Elena in danger. He sighed and turned to Alaric, "so, when you get us in, get out as quickly as you can. I know how to sneak around so they can't hear me. Plus, knowing Jasmine, she's going to go full on attack mode."
Jasmine threw Alaric a sickly smile, "so, you'll just be in the way and might possibly die."
"Damon, let me help." Elena stepped up next to him and pouted her lips, something she tended to do when she wanted one of the Salvatores to do her biddings.
"Fine, you can drive the getaway car. You are not going into that house."
Elena, literally, stomped her foot and groaned, "you can't stop me. It's Stefan we're talking about here. You don't understand."
Damon chuckled sarcastically and casted his glance down, "oh, I understand. I understand, he's the reason you live. His love lifts you up where you belong. I get it."
"Can you just not joke around for two seconds?"
Jasmine rolled her eyes and began to gather her stuff, "this is taking too long. If you two are going to pathetically argue, then tell me so I can go save Stefan myself or did it magically slip your mind that he's possibly being tortured at this second?"
Damon grabbed her arm just as she was going to exit the classroom and looked at Elena, "I can't protect you, Elena. I don't know how many vampires there are in there." He snaps his fingers, "that's how long it takes to get your head ripped off. I have to be able to get in and get out. I can't be distracted with your safety or this will end up a bloodbath that none of us walk away from... including Stefan. I know. I get it. I understand."
Jasmine watched the two of them interact and it was as if seeing a memory. A memory of where Damon felt so fiercely about the safety of a certain person. Jasmine knew coming back was going to cause them problems.
Alaric sighed and gathered his weapons, "if we're gonna go, let's go."
----
The plan in the end was for Alaric to pretend he was a stranded stranger who needed to use the phone and low and behold, Miss Gibbons' house was the only house he found. He would walk in, make some noise so the vampires inside wouldn't know that he was letting Damon and Jasmine in through the back door. Jasmine sat in her car as Alaric stepped out of Damon's. She watched his figure walk in the direction of the car before she stepped out and sped to the back door.
There was no doubt that bodies would drop during this rescue mission, but Jasmine would be damned if she let those bodies be any one of the Salvatores. She stood beside Damon as they waited for Alaric to open the door. Soon enough, Alaric appeared with a woman by his side.
"I'm really sorry. But you're gonna need to invite a friend of mine inside." Alaric grabbed the woman by the shoulders and forced her towards the now open back door.
She looks confused but shakes her head when she notices Damon standing outside, "oh, I'm sorry. He's not allowed in the house."
Jasmine began to grow irritated and pushed herself in front of Damon, motioning Alaric to bring her closer, "that's okay, just invite me inside."
Miss Gibbons' eyes dilated before she nodded, inviting the irritated vampire into her home. Jasmine sped into the house and looked around the kitchen. She looked at the vampire on the floor with a stake in its chest. Her adrenaline was on high as she finally examined the room she was in, desperate to find Stefan. She didn't pay attention to Damon and Alaric arguing in the doorway about killing the woman. She focused her hearing on figuring out exactly how many vampires were in the household.
There were thirteen vampires in total, including the ones in the basement. Jasmine snapped her eyes open when she heard footsteps heading in their direction. Without thinking twice, she waited for the vampire to appear before rushing towards him and shoving her hand into his chest, pulling out his heart.
She turned back to look at a wide eyed Alaric with her 'vampire' face on display, "I suggest you get going."
He scurried out the back door and raced toward the car, not having to be told twice. Damon approached her, the same look of determination on his face, "now what?"
"Stefan's in the cellar. Go around the house and find an entrance. You rescue him..." she dropped the heart that was in her hand and began walking towards the living room, "I'll take care of them."
----
Jasmine stalked towards the vampires playing pool. They were oblivious to her presence as they continued to drink and laugh. She felt her heart slow down to a steady place, controlling it to the point where it won't be noticeable if anyone where to focus on her heartbeat.
The only thing that was going through her mind at the moment was saving Stefan, getting revenge on the people who hurt him. Nothing else mattered. Not right now, all she saw was red as the veins under her eyes protruded and her fangs poked her bottom lip, aching to sink themselves into someone's flesh.
After that was a blinding mess for her. Flashes of blood and limbs splaying everywhere entered her mind. It was all she could focus on. So many screams of pain and begging for mercy rang in her ears. She didn't give them mercy. She made them suffer for what they did. For inflicting pain on Stefan was something you would pay with your life when Jasmine was the prosecutor and judge.
An inhuman growl erupted through her lips when she looked around, noticing that a certain vampire wasn't in the tangle of limbs that scattered the floor. Her eyes snapped to the doorway when she heard Elena scream Stefan's name. In the next second, she was dashing through the door and into the woods.
The adrenaline still didn't seem to leave her system, it seemed to have enhanced in her rage. Her fingers were itching to feel the life of someone under its fingertips, to feel it drain with the pressure of its palm against their neck. Her anger was slowly turning into hunger and she tried to push it away, for Stefan's sake.
When she reached where the screams had come from, she saw Elena on the floor next to a barely conscious Stefan and Damon desperately losing a fight against Frederick. She sped over to them and pulled Frederick off of Damon.
"Thanks." Damon clutched his stomach and pulled out the branch that was embedded in it. He ran off after mumbling something about Alaric going back to the house.
Jasmine stalked towards Frederick as he scurried backwards, trying to get away from her. She could hear his heart thumping fiercely against his chest. She sped over to him and grabbed hold of his leg, digging her nails into his skin causing him to scream out in pain. She looked back at Elena, "get him out of here. Now."
Elena nodded quickly and helped Stefan to his feet, slowly limping to the car. Jasmine turned her attention back to Frederick who's screaming had turn into small pants of pain, "you do know what's going to happen now, right?"
His screams attracted the rest of the tomb vampires who had yet to adjust to the modern era. Just like inside the house, thirteen vampires' hearts were heard around her. She spit out the part of Frederick's neck out of her mouth as his head tumbled onto the ground. She turned all around her, sensing the anger and slight fear in the woods.
With a smirk, she displayed her arms out, "come on!" Then, the vampires charged towards her.
----
Jasmine walked up the pathway of Miss Gibbons' house with blood slowly dripping off her chin and fingers. She noticed the door was open and in the entrance stood Pearl and Anna with Damon and Alaric standing in front of them.
"Trust me. The parties responsible for this will be dealt with."
Throwing the limbs she still had in her grip over their heads, she pushed past them, "oh, I made sure of that."
The three vampires and one vampire hunter stared at her wide eyed. Even though she felt exhausted, to them she looked as if she could rip them to shreds at that moment and not even have to waste her energy. She made her way to the bathroom to clean herself up when her phone began ringing. She pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed before answering it, not looking at the unknown number.
"What?"
"Look, I don't like you at all. I hate you, actually, but... Matt needs you. So, can you maybe come over to his house, like now?"
Jasmine hung up the phone and sped up the stairs, looking for some clothing to replace her blood soaked ones. Once she deemed it acceptable, she sped out of the house and drove towards Matt's house.
----
Once she got there, she noticed the sheriff's car parked out in front. She furrowed her eyebrows as she walked up the driveway. She knocked on the door and waited for someone to open it. A frown was on her lips when she noticed Kelly's distraught face and didn't step back when she launched herself into her arms, crying profusely.
Sadness settled into her core when she caught some of the words Kelly had sobbed out. Jasmine walked them back into the house, not releasing her hold, and sat them on the couch just as Caroline passed by them with a mug filled with coffee in her hand.
Sheriff Forbes sat next to them and placed her hand on Kelly's shoulder, "sorry Jasmine, but I have to talk to Kelly. Would you mind giving us a moment?"
Kelly reassured the vampire and softly patted her knee, "Matty's in the room." Getting up, Jasmine wasn't sure what she was supposed to do. She had never met Vicki, so she wasn't exactly sad for her death, but more so sad at how hard the Donovans were taking it.
"I just, uh... I need to be alone right now."
Caroline's face fell, but she nodded and set the mug down on his dresser. She was going to say goodbye, when she noticed Matt's eyes lighten up and his sobs coming more quickly when he looked behind her. Turning around, she saw Jasmine quickly walk towards him and pull him into her embrace. Caroline stood there looking at them for a moment before turning around and leaving.
Matt began sobbing uncontrollably as Jasmine swayed them back and forth, trying to soothe him. She let him cry all his emotions out: his anger for who or whatever killed his sister, his sadness for her death, and his guilt for not knowing sooner that something was wrong.
They eventually moved to lie down side by side on his bed. Matt's tears never stopped but his sobs were calming down. Jasmine just ran her hands through his hair and held him. She realized sometimes words didn't need to be expressed to provide comfort, contact was enough. And it was enough for Matt as he drifted off to sleep.
