THIRTY ONE.
A short drive and a half a mile of walking later, Jasmine smiled when the trail opened up to reveal a clearing. The sun was still out, but was slowly making its way towards the horizon. She could hear the rush of the water cascading down the cliff that was in front of them.
"I know it's not some fancy dinner, but—"
"It's perfect."
Jasmine walked towards the blanket lying near the edge and smiled when she saw the picnic basket over filling with food. She grabbed his hand and sat them both down next to each other.
"I'm not much of a cook, so there's only sandwiches, fruit, and mac and cheese." Matt rubbed the back of his neck, slightly embarrassed of the nonexistent variety he had packed.
"There's no need to lessen the value of what you did, Matt. This is by far more than satisfactory." Jasmine began eating the sandwiches and Matt began to devour the mac and cheese.
Tonight was a night that they both needed. A distraction from their daily lives. Be it their lives were far too different from each others, they both sought comfort in the little world they had created whenever they were together. They could talk about normal things like how their day had been, discover more of each other's favorite things, conspiracy theories that Matt seemed to taken an interest in secretly, and everything in between. Matt forgot about his problems at home, his struggling at school, and his exhaustion at work. Jasmine forgot about the vampires that seemed to lurk around every corner, annoying doppelgangers, and the constant phone calls she had been getting the last couple days.
The hunger was something she could not forget, even now as she was laughing at one of Matt's embellished stories, her fist was clenched and she refused to look anywhere but his eyes. Try as she might, she can't ignore the blood rushing to his face. She closed for eyes for a second and then opened them, hoping to be calmer.
"Hey, are you okay? Your eyes..." Matt attempted to reach forward and touch the veins that protruded from under her eyes.
Jasmine abruptly stood up and turned away from him, "it's nothing, don't worry about it." Her breathing was coming in heavier now as her hearing unwillingly focused on his rapid heartbeat. She clenched her fists again in front of her chest and watched small droplets of blood slowly fall from her palms. Movement behind her warned her of Matt's close proximity and the heat from his body made her mind tingle. It itched to be turned off, to relish in what it is to be a vampire, but Jasmine kept fighting it, not wanting to destroy the one thing she had held onto.
"Jasmine, what's wrong?" Matt reached out and laid a hand on her shoulder. He didn't what was going on, he thought for the past hour and a half that everything was going perfectly.
Jasmine jerked forward causing his arm to fall off its place. That small contact sent her veins into a frenzy and her fangs to pierce her lips. She took a deep breath in, letting her mind slowly numb itself to her feelings, "sorry, Matt."
Time seemed to dramatically slow for Matt Donovan as he watched Jasmine slowly turn around with a face different than he had ever seen before. Where once stood a girl he was head over heels falling for now stood a predator with its eyes locked into its prey. His feet stumbled backwards as he tried to get away from her, but seemed to not be getting anywhere as she advanced towards him. His scream silenced as Jasmine's hand clamped onto his throat, ready to tear into it.
As Jasmine opened her mouth wide, her thoughts were distracted when her cellphone began ringing. She looked at Matt's frightened face and immediately let go of him causing him to drop to the ground in a fit full of coughs.
"What-- oh my-- Matt, I'm so sorry." She tried to help him up but he swatted her hand away and scooted further away from her. She knew he would never forgive her for this, hell, he might run off into town screaming bloody murder and she would not blame him.
"Stay the hell away from me."
At that moment, Jasmine knew she couldn't let herself get comfortable with anyone human ever again, so for the sake of her species' secret, she grabbed his leg and pulled him towards her. She ripped off the vervain bracelet from his wrist and pulled his face towards her, concentrating on his eyes, "you will forget everything that happened in the past two minutes. We decided to end this early because I had a family emergency. You had a good time, but felt as if we had nothing in common. So, as a friend picked me up you told me that this wasn't working out." Jasmine slowly lifted him off the ground and placed her hands gently against his cheeks, "live your life well, Matt Donovan."
Matt stared into the distance before blinking a couple of times. With no recollection of why he was just standing and why his neck felt sore, Matt rubbed the back of his neck. He was confused when he noticed his bracelet on the floor, wondering how it fell off. He looked around and shrugged as he began picking up the picnic basket and all of its contents before getting into his truck so he could go home.

Laughter was filling up the boarding house when Jasmine stood outside of it. She could hear the distinct laughs of Lexi and Stefan. She knew she wouldn't be able to avoid them, but she thought it was worth trying to avoid the subject. Stefan looked up surprised when he saw Jasmine walk through the door, "hey, you're home early."
Jasmine looked at the clock and saw that it was barely seven thirty, "I guess I am."
Knowing something was wrong by the way she refused to even face them, Lexi got up and walked towards her. Though she stopped a foot away from her when she caught the scent of human blood from her. It was then that she noticed the dried blood on Jasmine's chin and fingers. Lexi held a hand out to Stefan, who was walking towards them, "go upstairs, Stefan. Now."
Stefan furrowed his eyebrows before doing what she said. Jasmine walked straight for the kitchen and began cleaning herself up as Lexi angrily followed her, "are you out of your mind? You know he's trying to control himself and you just walk in here with blood smeared all over your hands and face!"
Jasmine rolled her eyes as she furiously scrubbed at where she was stained. She had a lot of things on her mind and she certainly didn't need Lexi scolding her on top of everything. Jasmine couldn't get the frighten look that Matt had our of her mind and she couldn't shake the feeling of desire she had when she held his throat in her hands. Lexi continued to scold her and tell her how much careful she has to be until Jasmine snapped. She turned around quickly, yelling out, "ENOUGH!" She held out her hands and everything around them shattered.
Stefan sped into the kitchen and looked at everything that had broken before staring at the two vampires in front of him. Lexi had her eyes wide open while Jasmine had hers clenched shut. Silence fell over them as Stefan and Lexi looked at their best friend who was on edge. Damon slowly walked into the room and saw the broken glass.
"Whoa, I guess the date with the brainless jock didn't go well?"
"Damon." Stefan rolled his eyes at his insensitive brother before slowly walking towards Jasmine.
"As a matter of fact, everything was going well until..."
Remembering how she looked when she entered the house, Lexi quickly put her hands on her shoulders, forcing Jasmine to look her in the eyes, "tell me you didn't." Seeming to catch on quick, the Salvatore brothers widened their eyes as they waited for her response.
Jasmine swatted Lexi's hands off her shoulders and walked away from them, "I didn't. But I almost did."
"You restrained yourself, that's all that matter, Jas."
Jasmine shook her head and turned to face them again, hunger raging into her eyes, "I didn't, that's the thing! I was distracted. If whoever called hadn't rang me, then there would be no more Matt Donovan in this world. Another child that Kelly would had to mourn over."
The comforting words that her friends threw at her seemed to be going over her head as she began focusing on the itch for killing that was surging through her while she walked up the stairs towards her bedroom.
She shed off her clothing and prepared a bath which she gladly got into when it was ready. Thoughts swirled around her mind as she threaded her fingers through the water, slowly submerging her head underwater. She slowly lifted her head back above the surface when she heard her phone ringing once more, "who the bloody hell keeps calling me?"
Jasmine grabbed her phone and answered the call before the final ring, "what the hell do you want?"
A chuckle rang through her ears, making her body tense from its familiarity. It's been decades since she heard his voice and just now she was craving to hear it.
"Hello, love."
