FIFTY SEVEN.

"Is the thought of betrayal so foreign to each of your minds? Because if I recall correctly, Jasmine tells me you've all had your share of it when it came to her." They all looked at one another as Elijah smirked amusedly, "which reminds me," his gaze landed on the Salvatore brothers and his casual expression shifted to a subtle malicious one, "we do need to have a chat on why you felt it was alright to break my dear Jasmine's heart."

Damon scratched the back of his neck as Stefan lowered his gaze to the floor. Both of them went silent at the thought of already getting on Elijah's bad side by hurting Jasmine. Elijah waited until the awkward air consumed them before he spoke again.

"I love Jasmine, believe me, I do. But I also know her patterns and I'm sure it won't surprise me in the least if you confirm that she's on the downside of her humanity switch." He sighed as Stefan did in fact confirm his thoughts, "which means she isn't sincere when she says that her plan includes saving the life of your doppelganger."

Damon raised his hand, slight mockingly, and shifted his weight to one foot, "if I may... what goes she have against Klaus? Besides him being an imminent threat to everyone."

Elijah glanced at the raven-haired Salvatore and tried to find the right words to his question, "I don't think that's my story to tell, but I assure you that her anger is justified."

Alethea took a step forward as she narrowed her eyes at the Original, "why should we trust you? You said it yourself, you love Jasmine, so why would we believe that you would go through with taking her down?"

"Because as you all said yourself, Klaus is an imminent threat to everyone. No one, no one, will get in the way of me defeating him." Elijah said. "You don't know me, but I am a man of my word. And unlike you all, Jasmine still trusts me, which means she won't suspect that I would deceive her."

The group looked at each other, trying to reach a decision silently. On one hand, there were the ones that didn't want any harm to come to Jasmine, not the type of harm that Alethea was suggesting. Then there were the ones that knew that they wouldn't accomplish their rescue mission in saving Elena if Jasmine was in the picture. Seconds passed by before one side was finally outnumbered.

Sighing heavily and praying that they were making the right choice, Elena looked to Elijah, "let's talk then."

Jasmine sat at a dining table with a cup of coffee situated in her hand. Thoughts back to her conversation with the sheriff lingered in her mind as she glanced at the annoyed human in front of her. Her cover would have been blown if it weren't for her quick thinking. Jasmine had reassured the sheriff that her daughter and her friends were simply taking a quick trip to Duke University to find information on Elena's birth parents. It was quite a shock to Liz when she heard that Elena Gilbert wasn't Miranda's biological daughter.

The shock itself was enough for the sheriff to go along with the story and not interrogate Jasmine any further. Once she was in the clear, Jasmine headed straight to her compelled human's residence with the intention on demanding why the sheriff had any doubts on the teenagers' whereabouts.

"What use are you to me if you mess up simple information I've compelled you to recite?" Jasmine leaned forward, her elbows resting on the table before her, "what reason do you have that will keep you alive?" She didn't let her respond as she continued, "none. There really isn't anything that's stopping me from killing you, Jenna."

"True. Except for the fact that I'm the only one who Sheriff Forbes wouldn't suspect of lying. Oh, and because I know all of your secrets." Jenna scoffed out.

Jasmine looed at her tight lipped for a second before she broke into a full-blown grin, "you can go ahead and spill all of my secrets, Jenna. Though I should warn you that I've already taken precautions if it ever crosses your mind." She smirked at Jenna's disbelieving expression, "you're more than welcome to test it out, Jenna."

Jasmine quickly stood up from her seat and walked towards Jenna. Grabbing her phone off the table, Jasmine quickly dialed the first person she saw and handed it to Jenna. Holding her phone in front of her on speaker, Jenna listened as the line rang and someone finally picked up.

     "What's up, Aunt Jenna?"

Jenna continued to glance at Jasmine suspiciously as she answered back, "hey, I was just calling to check up on you. Everything alright?"

A chuckle was heard through the phone, "I'm fine, seriously. No need to worry about me, Aunt Jenna."

Jasmine tapped on the mute button and looked at Jenna expectantly, "go ahead. Tell him whatever you want."

Taking the phone off mute, Jenna quickly began to speak. Well, she tried. As soon as she thought about telling Jeremy that Jasmine was threatening her and basically holding her prisoner, Jenna's throat began to burn. Her words got stuck in her throat and a sudden warmth of liquid began to bubble up to her mouth. Alongside the liquid was the pain in her abdomen. It felt as if her insides were twisting and tightening. Jenna began to panic when she realized that the liquid was blood seeping from her mouth.

     "Jenna? Are you okay?"

Jasmine raised her eyebrows at her, waiting for Jenna to respond. Jenna took a deep breath and willed herself to not out Jasmine. It was only when she decided to stay quiet that the blood and pain stopped. Once she regained her breathing, Jenna cleared her throat and answered Jeremy's concerned exclaims, "I'm fine, Jer. Coffee just went down the wrong pipe."

Jeremy let out another chuckle before he answered, "you gotta be careful, Aunt Jenna. Too much coffee does that to you. I'll see you when I get home, okay? Hopefully you haven't choked to death by the time I get there."

The line went silent as Jeremy hung up the phone. Jasmine grabbed some napkins from the table and handed it to a glaring Jenna. She then sat atop of the table and smirked down at her, "see? I compelled you to keep my secrets, Jenna. And with a small little spell embedded into the magic of compulsion, I was able to make sure that if you even thought of telling anyone anything I've told you... well, your organs would begin to liquefy."

Tossing the soiled napkins to the side, Jenna looked up at Jasmine exasperatedly, "why are you doing this? I thought we were friends?"

Jasmine sighed softly as she grabbed another napkin and wiped some blood that Jenna had missed, "we are friends, Jenna. But that doesn't mean I have a sudden emotional tether to you—not anymore. You're very useful to me because you're innocent and close with the doppelganger and her mystical friends. That's all this is. A means to an end."

Standing up from the table, Jasmine sent a smile in Jenna's direction, "I have to go now, but remember what I said. I'll text you later with what more you can say to make sure people don't suspect Elena, Caroline, and Tyler's absences." Grabbing her coat, Jasmine began walking out the door, "this was fun, we should do this again."

The walk back to the tomb felt excruciatingly time consuming as Jasmine thought it'd be nice to slow her pace to give the Salvatores a bit more time with their precious doppelganger. She was immediately regretting that choice as her patience began to run thin. Rethinking her sudden decision, Jasmine sped to the tomb entrance and descended the stairs cautiously.

     "It's not going to work."

"I left you to spend time together not to plot." Jasmine said as she leaned against the stone wall at the bottom of the stairs.

The group turned their heads at the sound of her voice and slightly widened their eyes. Their stiffened postures made Jasmine suddenly grow cautious. The air grew thick as the group glanced at one another wondering how much the raven-haired vampire had overheard. But they then relaxed when Jasmine brushed off the feeling and rolled her eyes at them.

She made her way towards them, taking the stance in between the brothers and the doppelgangers. Gesturing towards the exit, Jasmine looked at the Salvatores expectantly, "I think my kindness has reached its quota for the day so, you can see yourselves out."

Damon and Stefan sighed and, much to Jasmine's surprise, did what she said immediately. They walked towards the exit and ascended the stairs leading outside without so much of a glance back. While they didn't think they were being suspicious, Jasmine knew something was up from that action alone.

"Whatever you have planned—forget it." She said as she turned to face the doppelgangers, "only I have the means to let you out of the tomb."

"Spells can be broken." Elena shot a look of disbelief towards Katherine's smug grin. If there was any form of having the element of surprise, it was surely out the window with Katherine's ability to be discreet in this situation.

But Katherine's smugness was short lived when her grin was met with a laugh erupting from Jasmine's lips.

"Who said it was merely a spell keeping you contained?" Her lips formed a fake pout as she looked at their somber frowns, "did I put a damper on your escape plan? Did you really think that with an avenging coven and determined Bennett running around that I would resort to mere witchcraft?"

To prove her point of it being more than just a barrier spell, Jasmine walked into the tomb causing the doppelgangers to take a step back. She walked around them tauntingly before exiting the tomb with no restrictions. Elena and Katherine's eyes widened at her, not believing the kind of magic Jasmine had placed on the tomb.

     "H-How is that possible?"

"I've been alive for nearly nine hundred years. You won't be able to grasp a tenth of the knowledge and power I've obtained." Jasmine leaned against the tomb opening and smiled at them, "the only way you're getting out of here is if I allow it... and I'm not done with you yet."

Fear projected from both Elena and Katherine causing Jasmine to look away as she felt it herself. It wasn't just fear, it was hope diminishing and Jasmine knew that feeling too well. The sound of voices lured Caroline and Tyler to the front where they looked confused as they saw their friend's scared expression.

     "Elena? What's going on?"

Elena glanced at Jasmine before sending a faux smile to her friends, "everything's fine. Jasmine is just gloating."

Seeing Katherine's hostile stare towards the raven-haired vampire, Tyler grew cautious and grabbed hold of Caroline's arm, "come on, Care. We should leave them to talk. Elena will tell us if it's important."

With a questioning glance directed at Elena, Caroline hesitantly agreed and let Tyler guide her back to the depths of the tomb. Jasmine watched their retreating figures with a smirk before turning her attention to Elena, "always the protector, but always the liar."

Elena scowled and crossed her arms, not willing to let Jasmine see her resolve crumble, "I only lied to keep them from worrying."

"And at what cost? What will happen when your plan goes awry and it costs one of them their lives? Will they forgive you for withholding the truth from them? For not giving them a chance to protect themselves?" Jasmine scoffed, "good intentions can have bad results."

Katherine stepped around her doppelganger to come face to face with Jasmine, "you would know all about the consequences, wouldn't you?" Jasmine narrowed her eyes as Katherine continued, "where is your beloved Kol?"

Anger flooded Jasmine's veins causing the veins under her eyes to protrude out. She hesitated for a second as Elena glanced behind Jasmine and gave a slight nod. Suddenly, Jasmine was overwhelmed with emotions which made her stagger. She felt the emotions of every vampire within Mystic Falls times a hundred. Anger became fury, scared turned to terrified, sadness turned to despair, and every intense bad feeling she had ever known filled her.

She stared at the doppelgangers, wondering how they were able to do this before she heard the murmuring above ground. Not wasting a second, she sped up the stairs and was met with the sight of several vampires on the ground while a circle of witches surrounded them. The sound of her arrival caused them all to look her way.

"What the hell is going—" She was cut off by her own screaming as she fell to the ground. It felt as if her brain was tearing itself apart and all she wanted to do was rip it from her skull with her bare hands.

The Salvatores looked on with a slight look of distress as Jasmine continued to yell in pain. Damon stepped forward and looked at Bonnie, "what if there's some junkies wandering the woods? Aren't your new friends concerned about the noise?"

"Francis and Jonas cast a spell to keep this place soundproof to the rest of the town. No one can hear her screams."

"I suggest you begin the rest of your plan if you want to keep her from breaking from our spell," Francis called out as his coven continued to mutter the spell they had concocted up with the help of the Martin witches.

Elijah quickly looked over to Alethea and nodded, "he's right. Let's continue."

Stefan looked away as Alethea bent down to be level with Jasmine. She grabbed hold of her head and immediately dove into her mind, forcing the heretic to relive every memory she had suppressed. With the witches' spell of having the emotions Jasmine was receiving be amplified, Alethea made sure to add to it by connecting it to Jasmine's own emotions.

"Get—off!" Alethea kept her place as Jasmine weakly tried to push her away. Jasmine's entire body felt heavy and numb, but she didn't let it stop her from fighting. She raised her hands and pushed them against Alethea's chin, trying to push the red-haired vampire away from her. Alethea didn't move an inch.

Her head felt as if it were vibrating and the ringing in her ears didn't help. Flashes upon flashes of memories surfaced to the forefront of her mind, making her replay them over and over. Jasmine kept her hands where they were but turned her gaze to Elijah, "how could you?"

"I'm truly sorry, but this is the only way that everyone will get what they want." He walked towards her and crouched in front of her. He lifted a hand and placed it gently on her cheek, "I never meant to cause you harm, but it's obvious you have a different motive and I cannot have that. Not when I'm so close."

Jasmine didn't reply as her body limped into Alethea. Her eyes were wide and responsive, but it was clear that she wasn't there entirely. Alethea looked up at the Adiutores Terrae Coven and nodded, implying that Jasmine was subdued. Elijah carefully grabbed Jasmine and held her in his arms as she looked around in fright.

"Go free the doppelganger and her friends. I'll stay here with Jasmine until you return."

The Salvatores hesitated before followingBonnie and the Martin witches.
