The four hostages looked eagerly to the entrance as they heard their approach. Caroline's eyes looked hopeful as they neared them, "can we get out now?"
Luka Martin nodded his head, "we just have to lift the barrier spell—"
"Yeah, about that." Stefan looked confused as Katherine called out, "there is no barrier spell."
"What are you talking about? Of course, there is. How else would she have trapped you in there?" Damon rolled his eyes before motioning the witches to get started.
Elena stepped forward and nodded, "Katherine's right. Jasmine went on about the different ways she knows how to contain someone that didn't involve a barrier spell. She was able to walk into and out of the tomb without anything stopping her."
"So, how the hell are we supposed to get you out?"
Jonas and Luka glanced at each other then to the Salvatores, "if Jasmine is relying on her vast knowledge from being alive for centuries then maybe Elijah will know what it is."
Clapping his hands together, Damon grinned widely, "great, go get him so that we can all get out of here."
As soon as they were out of sight, Elena looked at Stefan's somber expression, "I know that wasn't easy for you, but she'll be okay."
"Will she?" Stefan ignored Elena's hurt expression and turned to Damon, "I'm gonna go see if I can help."
Stefan walked up the steps, leaving Elena to feel horrible about the part she had taken in this decision. Seeing her expression, Damon frowned, "he'll get over it. He's just always been over concerned when it comes to her."
"Yeah I'm figuring that out now."
Aboveground, Elijah continued to sit on the floor with Jasmine in his arms as he racked his mind on what other measures Jasmine might've taken. Years and years of being beside her and watching her evolve her magic had surely left some important memories.
"Jasmine always tried to learn as many magical practices as she could. There was traditional, ancestral, connective, dark, sacrificial, spirit, blood, elemental, hoodoo, and representational. Anything she could get her hands on. She even took K—" Elijah's eyes widened in realization and looked down at Jasmine as he softly whispered, "of course."
"Can you tell us your great light bulb moment, or do we have to guess?" snapped Stefan. His eyes darted around to the lingering coven members, wondering what they were waiting for, before he looked beside Elijah. He couldn't make himself look at Jasmine yet.
"Jasmine didn't take an interest to all magic only; she also took an interest in science." He rolled his eyes at Stefan's impatient expression, "there's a form of magic that intercepts both subjects. Kemiya. Jasmine created an abundance of dark objects while practicing this." He looked up at the Martin witches, "tell the ones inside the tomb to look for a black candle nestled upon an inverted black skull with a metal ornate base."
Luka and Jonas immediately went down the stairs to inform the others. Elijah began to remove himself from Jasmine so that he could stand but it only caused her to begin thrashing around.
"No! Please, don't! I-I'll do anything, but please don't hurt him! No!" Jasmine cried out as she tried to cling to Elijah's shirt.
He looked up at Stefan in slight distress, "you have to hold her for a moment. I need to see if my assumption is correct. And if it is then we have to take Jasmine down into the tomb and I cannot do that if I am trapped underneath her."
Stefan shook his head and turned away from them. He couldn't bear to hear or see her like that, so how was he to hold her and feel what it was doing to her?
"Stefan! Need I remind you that you agreed to this."
"I was outvoted! There's a difference." He ran a hand through his hair and shook his head, "I told you I didn't want any part of this, but you went forward with it. Knowing what it could do to her, you still did it."
Elijah frowned and looked down at Jasmine again. His eyes scanning over her frightened features, "I didn't know how else to stop her. I care for her deeply, Stefan. Do you think that this does not pain me, too? But it's done and there's nothing we can do to stop the chaos that's happening in her mind... but we can get Elena and her friends out from the tomb. We can free them."
Thoughts whirled around in Stefan's head. He didn't want to see Jasmine in such a state, but he knew Elijah was right. There's nothing he could do for Jasmine now, but he could still do something for Elena. So with that, Stefan took a deep breath and crouched down beside Elijah, placing his hands on Jasmine's head and torso. They gently moved her into the bridal position in Stefan's arms, so that he was able to easily lift her up without jostling her.
Jasmine felt the movement and began thrashing around again, trapped inside another memory, "not the stables, papa! I promise to never do it again!"
Tears brimmed Stefan's eyes as he tried to comfort her. He laid his head upon hers and closed his eyes, gently shushing her, "I'm here. It's okay."
Jasmine's eyes closed momentarily before opening wide again, "Stefan—I should've warned you from her. I didn't mean for this to happen. I'm so sorry, Stefan."
They both looked at her, astonished, thinking she broke from her trance. Francis was ready to step forward and give her another round of their spell when she kept on rambling.
"It's not your fault. You're a good person who had something terrible happen to. It is not your fault, Stefan."
"She's still inside her head." Stefan assured Elijah and the coven.
"How are you sure?"
Stefan sighed before placing his head back on top of hers and heading to the tomb, "because those were the words she told me when I murdered my father."
Elijah kept quiet as they continued on. The scene in front of them once they entered where the tomb was was quite amusing. The Martin witches kept yelling out details as the four stuck individuals were scrambling to find said object in the never-ending tomb.
"This is going to take forever!"
"Well, see it as if you don't find the damn candle, then you'll be stuck here forever!" Damon called out. He smirked when the scrambling turned more frantic.
A few minutes later, Elena stumbled to the front of the tomb with a look of triumph on her face, "I got it!"
Elijah looked on with bewilderment and a smirk on his face as Elena held up the dark object. He should've known Jasmine would be clever enough to use all her assets available to her. He held his hand out for the candle, but the candle was preventing Elena from moving it any further than the tomb entrance.
"What kind of candle is that anyway?"
"She called it the Flame of Imprisonment. The person who lights it can enter and leave as they please, but the people inside can't. And only the person who lights it can put it out." Elijah turned to Stefan and extended his arm towards the tomb, "Jasmine has to be inside in order to blow out the flame."
Stefan looked weary but walked into the tomb and positioned Jasmine so that she was facing the candle in Elena's hand, "how is she supposed to blow it out if she isn't in her right mind."
"A simple puff of air from her rambling should suffice. Get her to talk again."
"How am I supposed to do that?"
Elijah shrugged his shoulders, "looking at you seemed to have triggered a memory so maybe looking at someone else will do the same."
Katherine pushed her hair away from her face and walked towards the tranced vampire, "I'll do it. I'm curious to see what memory she conjures up."
Jasmine's eyes glanced around the entirety of the tomb before they focused on Katherine. A small smile appeared on her lips before they dipped down into a frown and concern etched into her glazed eyes.
"Eloise?"
Various stages of confusion appeared on everyone's faces as Jasmine continued to mumble the name Eloise.
"Que fais-tu ici? Je vous ai dit que ce n'était pas sûr."
While everyone continued to look at her confused, Jasmine's mind made her believe she was back in time when this memory occurred. It was France, 1703 and Jasmine had been in the midst of fleeing the small town when she was captured. While she knew she could easily outmaneuver herself from their restraints, Jasmine didn't want the townies to know that she was actually capable of what she was accused of. She didn't want to leave the town yet, not when she hadn't said goodbye to her.
Though Jasmine insinuated many attempts of getting Eloise to leave her side, to save herself, the human girl always stood her ground. Jasmine had saved her from some drunken lowlifes and she felt a debt must be paid, so she followed the vampire around and provided company. It was annoying at first, especially since it had been the first time that she saw the cruelty of Niklaus as he took Kol away from her, but the heretic soon grew fond of the human.
"Ce n'est pas sécuritaire pour toi d'être ici."
Eloise gave her a small smile before holding up a pair of keys. Jasmine let out a laugh of delight as the girl opened the cell door. Walking down the hallway with Eloise on her heels, Jasmine turned to face her as she heard the sound of scuffles in the distance, "me fais-tu confiance?"
Eloise gave her an eager nod, prepared for what was to come, and smiled when she felt the wind whip her hair around. Touching the floor gently, Eloise didn't remove her arms from around Jasmine's shoulders.
"I, uh, do not think I will grow tired of that."
Jasmine smiled gently, "you've been working on your English."
"It has been hard, but... si je peux vous parler en deux langues, ça en vaudra la peine."
Jasmine let out a laugh at that. It was strange to feel such a connection to someone so quickly. To feel as if you can't imagine a world where they hadn't already been in your life. But that's what happened when Jasmine met Eloise. It was as if an uncompleted puzzle had found its missing piece.
"Where shall we—"
If Jasmine hadn't been so distracted from being content with Eloise, then she could have heard the lone footsteps that had made its way to them. She would have been able to pull Eloise to the side and crushed the man's bones in his hand before he could even think of lifting the axe. Jasmine could have stopped the man from driving the axe into Eloise's back. If she hadn't been too busy being happy then she could have spared this innocent life.
It was one of the first times that Jasmine felt absolute rage in her vampire state. It was the first time she didn't feel pleasure in tearing a whole town apart. She had crumpled to the ground next to Eloise's body and cried out in sorrow.
"NO!"
Stefan struggled to keep Jasmine still as she thrashed around violently, consumed in the past. Katherine's confused eyes never lifted as she wondered why her face triggered a memory of a girl named Eloise. Pushing Katherine aside, Elena quickly placed the candle in front of Jasmine's mouth again, trying to get the puff of air Elijah had said. Once the flame was put out, Elena and her friends quickly exited the tomb and followed Bonnie up the steps. Stefan quickly walked out the tomb with Jasmine as she continued to thrash.
Before Katherine could follow them out, Elijah quickly sped in front of her, "Elijah, what are you doing?"
"Did you really think I was going to let you go?"
Katherine widened her eyes slightly as fear settled in her bones, "Elijah, please."
"You shall not exit until I say so. When Klaus comes into town, he'll know exactly where you are."
Stefan ignored Katherine's pleas as he walked up the steps with a struggling Jasmine. Once they were above ground and on open space, Jasmine pushed harder which caused her to fall to the ground. She pushed her hands into her hair and pulled, crying, "Je suis désolé. C'était de ma faute. Tout est de ma faute."
"Jasmine! It's okay!" She continued to scramble away from him and cry out softly. Stefan began to grow desperate as the closer he got, the farther she would push herself, "Jasmine, please. You're okay, you're okay."
"She can't really hear you."
Stefan turned around to see Francis and his coven still loitering around, "what are you talking about?"
"Jasmine's quite literally lost her mind. So many terrible memories from the past nine hundred years replaying over and over, well, it's no wonder she's a bit chaotic."
"Can this be reversed?"
"Maybe, but we've never seen it done, so her chances are close to nonexistent." Francis said with a conniving smile. "But don't you worry your pretty little head of hair about her. She's not your problem anymore."
Stefan furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. Before he could ask what they had meant, his body was flung to a nearby tree. He groaned as he fell to the floor in pain. Looking up from the ground, he focused his blurry vision on Francis. Stefan watched as Francis lifted his hand and broke Jasmine's neck.
"Thank you for delivering a very incompetent Jasmine to us, we appreciate it."
"No." But before Stefan could even stand, the coven disappeared along with Jasmine's body.
