CHAPTER 06

CAMERON WAS STANDING BEHIND THE COUNTER, CHECKING A GROUP OUT WHEN THE PHONE RANG,

"Patsy's Pies, how may I help you?"

"Your boyfriend is a fucking asshole." Fiona spat into the phone,

"Excuse me?" Cameron asked,

"We found Frank... IN TORONTO! And your boyfriend is the one to smuggled him across the border and dumped him there!" Fiona yelled,

"Wait, are you sure Steve did it? Did he tell you he did it?" Cam questioned,

"Yeah, after I found a cigarette carton with Canadian health messages on it. He said he put them in the trunk of his car and was going to drop him off in Michigan, but decided on Canada instead. And now, Frank's in Canadian prison and he doesn't have a passport to get back."

Cameron was pissed. What right did Steve have to kidnap her father and dump him in Canada? Sure, this was something they could laugh at in the future, but right now, how is Frank going to get back into the US?

She glanced outside and spotted Steve's car pulling up to the curb, "Hang on a sec." Cam placed the phone down and rushed outside, "Hey!"

Steve stood by the car, "I was just coming to explain to you-"

He didn't get to finish as Cameron slapped him across the face. Steve grabbed his face in pain and turned back to her, "Okay, I deserved that."

"You smuggled my dad into Canada!?" She went to hit him again and arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her up and away from Steve, "What the hell is wrong with you?!"

"Hey!" Sean pulled her away, "Calm down." He told her in her ear,

"I am calm!" She yelled, kicking her legs at Steve,

"No, you're not." He moved away from Steve and set her down, "Hey, hey," Sean forced her to look up at him, "What's going on?"

"He dumped my dad in Canada without a passport and now he has no way back and he's in Canadian prison!" Cam glared at Steve from over Sean's shoulder,

"I'm assuming that's the boyfriend?" Sean asked,

Cameron scowled and crossed her arms over her chest. After this, she wouldn't want to consider him anything, "He's not my boyfriend."

"I'm Steve, man, nice to meet you." Steve held out his hand and Cameron glared at him, "Right, sorry."

Sean raised an eyebrow at Steve, "Canada?"

He shrugged, "Seemed like a good idea at the time."

"Yeah, and what about now?" Cameron scoffed at him, "Maybe I should dump you in Lake Michigan and see how you like it."

"Cam, please, let me just explain." Steve begged,

Sean grabbed her arm and pulled her back, "Look, this is a conversation between you and him. If I leave you two, will you please not swing at him? No need to give the customers a show."

Cameron thought about it for a moment before nodding. Sean squeezed her arm before going back inside,

She stared at Steve for a moment, "Why, Steve? Because he took a swing at you?"

"No, because he's got a family that he doesn't give a shit about." Steve hissed, "Smashing Ian in the face. Coming in drunk every night."

Cameron shook her head and walked up to Steve, poking him harshly in the chest, "What my dad is, what my family is, has fuck all to do with you." She walked towards the door of the diner, "You left him there... you get him back!"

She finished her shift... barely. Cameron was distracted the next few hours, just going through the motions. It didn't get her much in tips.

"Do you need a meeting?" Sean asked, coming over to her as she cleaned the countertops,

Cameron shook her head, "I should get home." She knew how much Debbie was upset about Frank being gone. She should be there to help Fiona out,

"Hey." Sean reached out, grabbing her hand to stop her from cleaning, "If you need a meeting-"

"I'll go to one tomorrow." She gave him a small smile, "Thank you."

He nodded and removed his hand, "Go on, then. I can finish up here."

"You sure?"

"Yeah, get going." He urged,

Cameron took off her apron and grabbed her bag, "Sean? Thanks, really."

"It's nothing. Just... take care of yourself." Sean told her,

"I will."

It took Cameron a while to get home. Steve didn't pick her up, which she wasn't expecting, so she had to take the L. When she got back to the house, the kids were in bed and Fiona was cleaning the kitchen.

"Hey." Cameron cleared her throat as she took off her coat,

"Hey." Fiona glanced over at her, "Steve, Kev, and V are going to get dad right now."

She nodded, "Good."

Her older sister put away the dishes before staring at Cam, "You gonna end things with him?"

Cameron sighed, "I don't know. He's the only guy who's ever really gave a shit with how Frank treated us. But I don't think dumping him across the border was the best way to handle it."

"Well, at least he didn't call DPS." Fiona replied,

She hummed, "There is that."

The next morning, an old RV parked in front of the house. The entire neighbourhood was there, waving Canadian flags to tease Frank.

Kev and V stepped out first, holding a box filled with prescription drugs, since they were cheaper in Canada than in the US,

Next was Frank, who was telling everyone to fuck off.

"Welcome home, daddy." Debbie smiled,

Frank glared at her before pushing past them and going inside the house. The younger kids followed him inside and before Cameron went with, she made eye contact with Steve, who was in the crowd.

He gave her a hopeful smile, but she didn't return it before going into the house.

Cameron and Fiona went upstairs, where Debbie was talking to Frank in the bathroom.

"Disability." Fiona stated as she handed Frank the check, "It's Saturday. Bank's close at 12:00."

Cameron brushed back Debbie's wild hair, "Clean clothes, top of the dryer." The younger red head went down the stairs to do her chores while the older Gallagher's confronted Frank,

"Don't ever hit one of my kids again." Fiona stated coldly,

"Your kids? They're my-"

"Never again." Cameron crossed her arms,

Frank stared at her for a moment, "Is he still here?" He asked,

"Who, Steve?" Cameron shrugged, "He's probably still outside."

"Well, tell him he's not welcome in my house."

"He's the one who got you back." Cameron shot back,

Frank sputtered and leaned against the wall, "Why would he do that? Hmm? When I woke up, in Toronto, in a park, looking like a fucking homeless tweaker, all I could smell was Drakkar Noir. Middle of a park... Drakkar Noir. I just spent five hours with him in that camper." He leaned closer to Cameron and growled, "Same fucking smell!" He cursed before walking towards his bedroom,

Cameron hummed and turned to look at Fiona, "I guess I'll have to keep Steve around now."

After, she got changed into her work uniform and met up with Sean to go to a meeting. She let him know that her father was back and for the most part, fine.

"You gonna break up with him?" Sean asked as they walked towards the diner after the meeting,

She breathed out some smoke from his cigarette, "I don't know yet."

"He make you happy?" He continued as he grabbed his cigarette from her fingers,

Cameron glanced over at him and nodded, "When he's not kidnapping my family members, yeah."

He opened the door for her and crushed the cigarette butt under his shoe, "Want to do something that will take your mind off of it?"

"What's that?" Cam smiled,

He handed Cameron her hour card, "Six hours of non-stop work."

Her smile fell as she took her card from his hand and clocked in, "Shut up."

It was dark when Cameron walked out of the diner after her shift. Parked on the side of the road, Steve stood next to a tan mini-van, the door open to reveal a large bouquet of roses, like, big enough to fill the van.

"Hey." He greeted,

Cameron raised her eyebrows as she approached him, "You stole a floral delivery van?"

"A peace offering." Steve corrected,

"A what?"

"A gift." He continued,

She stuffed her hands into her jacket pockets, "What am I supposed to do with all those roses?"

"No, the... the van. You absolutely need something to haul the kids around in." He stated. Cameron didn't respond, just kept staring at him. She didn't want him to buy her gifts like that, especially not gifts that were bought with illegal money, "I'm sorry, Cameron. I shouldn't have kidnapped your dad. It was wrong." Cam scoffed and crossed her arms, "Tri-zone air-conditioning. Power window and door locks. Alloy wheels..."

Cameron fished into her pockets and pulled out some cash, "Here's $80."

"What for?" Steve asked, staring at the money in his hand,

"The washer. I don't have enough to pay you back for all of it right now." She stated,

"No, the washer was a gift." He argued,

"No, I'll get you the rest as soon as I can." Cameron cleared her throat and began to walk down the street,

"I don't want your money!" Steve exclaimed as he followed behind her,

Cameron whipped around, "We don't need your charity."

"It was a mistake! I thought I was doing you a favor, with your dad." He exclaimed,

"Go away, Steve." She called out, walking away before he could follow any further.

She didn't need his money, she didn't need his gifts. She wasn't a charity case.
