Chapter 25

Annabeth decided that having the sword as a necklace would probably be the best thing rather than a wrist or ankle cuff, and having the weapon as a ring of earring could just end up getting in the way sometime. There was always the risk of the necklace getting caught on something as well, choking her to death, decapitating her, or the occurrence that she wouldn't be able to reach it in time to defend herself, but it couldn't be helped.

Annabeth walked through the palace looking for that secret passage on the way to the next room. As she walked her nerves started to settle and she found herself getting excited for whatever it was this library held. She pulled on the arm of a lamp nearby, a pretty cliche marker but still pretty effective nonetheless.

Not soon after the passageway opened up and Annabeth found herself staring down a dark, unlit tunnel that could hold her worst nightmares and horrors. The last time she went down here the light given off of Percy's tattoos had helped her keep calm in the tight tunnel. And while she saw no cracks or crevices that any spider could house themselves in, along with no cobwebs or tunnels she was still afraid that even though it had only been a few hours there would be something there waiting for her somehow.

The tunnel closed in front of her as she stared and Annabeth was brought out of her reservations by the soft click as the wall 'handle' reset. She stared at the enclosed wall for a few moments longer before realizing that she had something she could use against this fear. Her powers from Hestia! Annabeth mentally smacked herself in the head for not remembering sooner and with a thought she lit her right arm, from her fingers to her elbow, on fire.

Annabeth looked at her arm in awe, she felt that it was never going to grow old seeing her arm on fire with flames that should be giving her second and third degree burns doing nothing other than a gently warming presence. Sure she could cause them to burn, and she could even create fireballs or use her powers as a flamethrower or plasma cutter, but she didn't want to have a need to do that. So instead she used the other powers she'd gained from Hestia to their full extend and neglected her power over fire.

Now however she was going to use it to drive back her fears, and Annabeth guessed that this could also serve as a small training exercise as holding a controlled flame for an unknown amount of time was likely to be extremely stressful. Annabeth pulled on the 'handle' again and entered the tunnel without any of her previous hesitation from before, and as she walked she tried to remember how far this first tunnel had been last time and what the midway point could be.

Eventually she just opted to have her en-flamed arm trail along the right wall of the tunnel as she walked as to not accidentally miss this opening. And it might have just been her nerves, or the stress of using her fire for so long, but when Annabeth finally found the invisible wall she almost missed it. Annabeth's arm passed through a decent part of the wall before smacking against the other side and jolting her from her concentrated haze.

Annabeth stepped back and pushed her arm through once more to be sure that it wasn't just her mind playing tricks on her due to how high her nerves were and seeing that her hand went clear through the wall she took a few moments to calm down before stepping through and into an even darker hall. She could tell that Percy had barely gone over this section as it was still the glowing magma toned appearance that he said the rest of the palace had been before. And before seeing it for herself she was unable to see how such a setting would've made the place gloomy and unwelcoming but upon seeing the tone of this tunnel she could already feel that sense of foreboding that wasn't a good experience for her.

Annabeth started forwards carefully, hyper-aware of anything that went on around her in the tunnel: from a flicker of the shadows to the brightness of her fire-engulfed arm. And by the time Annabeth broke through to the section of the tunnel leading into the library she was sweating and exhausted. The tunnel had widened a little and she was now able to stand and walk on cautiously without worry of hitting her head on a ceiling of any kind, but that was also a downside as she didn't know if there was anything watching her from above or not.

"Hello! Is anyone here!?" Annabeth yelled out cautiously, gripping Destruction's necklace with her left while she waved her right arm to look around. "Anyone?!" Annabeth once again yelled into the darkness and after a few moments of walking with no reply other than the echo of an empty room she started searching for something she could use to see the entire library was filled with light.

As she walked she wondered why there were no webs or creatures of any kind and guessed that it might be due to Percy's subconscious wanting to keep a place like this as clear and clean as possible for reasons such as this. Or there was something here watching her as Annabeth struggled to find something to fill the place with light of any kind.

It wasn't until a half hour later that Annabeth came across a sort of reception desk and while inspecting it she noticed a dangling line of rope dangling in its center. Annabeth walked around the circular area for the moment inspecting everything she could in the dark before looking around once more and deciding that there was no use in waiting and to just see what pulling on the rope did.

Annabeth walked to the center of the area still extremely worried that this was a trap of some kind and she reached up to pull on the rope. And then stopped a breath away from touching it for a moment while she listened and after she was satisfied she grasped the old relic and pulled. There was a rather anticlimactic 'click' and nothing happened.

Annabeth looked at the rope dumbfounded for a moment before deciding that maybe it was something else that triggered the lights of something, and as soon as she let go of the rope another 'click' sounded and the entire place was flooded with light.

It was so sudden and so fast that the sudden change blinded Annabeth and caused her to back into the desk surrounding her and lash out with her fire. Her arms burned through the wood and a fireball destroyed the other half of the desk before Annabeth realized that she wasn't being attacked and the only thing that had actually happened was the sudden lighting of the room. Just like she had wanted actually, but since she couldn't do anything Annabeth sat against the only surviving section of the desk and waited for her eyes to adjust.

It took a little longer than she expected but with what had happened Annabeth wouldn't have been surprised if that sudden explosion of light had actually blinded her and caused her immortality and powers to need to heal her vision back. Though such thoughts mattered little as Annabeth saw the uncovered massiveness of the library she was now in the center of. It was greater than she imagined and held much more than the thought possible. It must've spanned at least a good third of the prison formerly called Tartarus and each shelf was designed to curve and align into a perfect circle, row by row, and with every column there were so many scrolls and tablets stacked neatly into shelves that Annabeth had a hard time processing the sheer magnitude of everything here.

It was a good ten minutes of Annabeth just staring in shock at everything around her before she snapped out of it and started to look around for a manual of something that she could use to better navigate this place. And after looking at the destroyed remains of the reception's area Annabeth so happened to look at the floor to see the letter 'H' in Ancient Greek spelling. So after clearing the rest of the rubble she could clearly see the word 'History' inscribed into the center of the area so this was the History section. The exact section that she'd wanted to be in after finding this place and while Annabeth assumed there were more sections she didn't have the mind to try and look as she had immediately gone to the nearest shelves to grab whatever she could read.

--------------------------------

For the next few hours Annabeth was completely oblivious to her surroundings. Not caring that every shadow seemed to pulse around her, nor that the walls of the shelves and walls glowed with red eerie light as she read all that she could. Soon she had a stack of ten books at her side and another three on the floor on the other side of her, those soon to be read.

She learned about a lot of things, mostly just about the history recorded throughout Tartarus' subconscious when he was ruling over this plane, and other times she was reading about the history of the monsters and buildings here as well, both new and old. Such as the Arena that Percy fought at, it was so inclusive and updated that there were multiple volumes just on this subject and the participants from the oldest Drakon to the newest addition of their prisons, the Manitcore.

Annabeth didn't notice when a dark figure emerged from the shadows behind her, their skin pale as a full moon, their hair darker than night, and their eyes black voids of emptiness. Long claws extended from the tips of the figure's fingers and they had a long dress to cover their form, seemingly made of shadow itself.

"What are you reading there little one?" A raspy female voice sounded in Annabeth's mind. Shocking her from her indulgence and pulling at the necklace causing Destruction to appear as she quickly left the chair and looked around for threats. Annabeth saw nothing around the front of her, but when she looked back at the chair there was nothing there either. It was as if she imagined it all, but that feeling of being on the edge of an eternal darkness wouldn't go away. Even the red of the glowing walls seemed dulled somehow.

"Ah, you fear me. Like most things do." That voice once again spoke in her mind and Annabeth's remaining arm up to her elbow lit on fire. It made a small portion of the room lighter again and there was a discontent hiss bouncing off all the walls. "I did not like what you put in my head last time we met child of the books." Annabeth's mind was running full tilt trying to figure out if she had met this person before from the last time she was here. It would've been with Percy, before he was changed into what he is now, and during a quest more than likely.

The Doors were the only thing that came to mind, she and him had to travel through many different places to actually get to the Doors, but where could she have met this person before? Was it at the doors? Before?

"I see you don't remember me, ah, the human mind is so fleeting sometimes isn't it?" The voice was starting to get clearer, and something in the corner of Annabeth's mind recognized it. "It's really a shame I don't get to see the color of your blood. I was hoping I could have a bite, but it can't be helped. Father needs me to help plunge everything into chaos and that means that he also needs you ensuring the process goes smoothly."

Annabeth whirled around whenever the voice seemed to be speaking directly in her ears, and then she remembered. There was a deity that wanted to eat her and Percy before while they were here, but Annabeth had tricked them into fighting many others before even getting a chance.

"Nyx?" Annabeth's voice shuddered as she looked around warily and the voice let out a deep maniacal laughter that reverberated off the walls all around her, seeping into her head.

"You just needed a little push." Annabeth found her hands captured by some strong force and suddenly she felt like she was falling. Destruction had been ripped from her grasp and fallen somewhere below her, but the horror in front of her was the only thing that had her attention.

"I can't let you go just yet my puppet." The demon of a goddess smiled, sharp teeth glinting off the red light around them, "I've been waiting to see you again, so you could see how you've destroyed me."

"W-what?" Annabeth couldn't move, Nyx was holding her by the wrists: her pale arms grasping tightly, her nails digging into Annabeth's skin, and the reddened pinpricks of her eyes staring deep into her own. Darknedd covered her arms up to the shoulder and her feet seemed to be caught on the edge of a shadow and the floor.

"It was a pain moving through this domain without detection. If he had been even a little more experienced with his powers he could've easily detected and stopped me, but alas here I am with his precious in my grasp. Tender and Waiting." Nyx leant down towards Annabeth, letting her nose barely touch Annabeth's cheeks, inhaling deeply. "You've grown more powerful than last time we met. My prey. I can't wait for father to let me rip out your heart."

"Percy will--" Annabeth cried out in pain as Nyx crushed her left arm.

"I do not want to hear that name!" Nyx roared before looking down at the crushed arm, able to see through her shadows. "Now look what you made me do. I can't eat ruined meat!"

"He will find me." Annabeth rasped, steadying herself for more pain, but instead Nyx chuckled grazing her neck with her sharp teeth.

"We're counting on it." She whispered before letting go.

HIiiii. Um, I can already imagine the annoyance and irritation I am going to get when this chapter is released.

"You released a good chapter last week with a nice ending to the chapter and a bit of family bonding time?!"

Well you know what I'm leaving you on a cliff-hanger again! XP

Anyways I hope that you enjoyed this one. I've been having a hard time finding a good ending for this book. I mean I want to incorporate all of the Avengers, but it's just too many characters to have I feel, and then there's the fact that I've messed up a lot of character relationships already and more than likely gotten so may personalities, powers, and descriptions wrong.
I'm at chapter 25 though, this marks the halfway(?) point, again I don't know where to go yet and am really trying to keep together an umbrella in a hurricane with duct tape.

Though please consider joining my Patreon, it hasn't been out long I know, and I still don't think that I have had a good sense of consistancy to be sharing it, but I only ask that you consider the $1 option as that would show me that people care more than just comments, votes, and asking for updates.

Writing ahead is HARD.
Goodbye!
