Chapter 4: One Week

Jack's POV

I arrived back at the base just in time for the meeting. Everyone else was already there.

"Jack! Where have you been?" Tooth asked.

"I was at Pitch's lair with Elsa," I said.

"Ha ha. Very funny," Bunny said.

"No, I'm serious guys! I went over there planning to kill Elsa since you guys wouldn't, and then we ended up talking. Pitch has her under his control. It's like he brainwashes her. But she doesn't want to serve him. In the end she told me to be careful because Pitch was going to attack, and she made me leave so that Pitch wouldn't find me!" I told everyone.

"Nice try, but Elsa can't be saved. Sandy already tried to remove the darkness in her mind and in her heart. We may have to go into hiding, drop all guardian activity," Bunny said.

"But we might lose our believers!" Tooth gasped.

"The yeti, elves, and baby tooths can all continue our work. But we have to go," Bunny explained.

"Why won't you believe me?" I asked loudly.

"Because Jack, some people aren't capable of turning good! They just aren't! And we can't force them to let go of the darkness!" Bunny finally shouted.

"And Elsa isn't one of those people! I saw her. She was good. She smiled and laughed. She has good in her, deep down inside," I said firmly. Suddenly the full moon appeared in a nearby window. A pillar of light shone down until it reached me. We all watched in tense silence. Slowly, the light faded.

"We will give you one week to try and turn Elsa," North finally said. Bunny didn't argue.

"Thank you. In one week, you'll see she isn't that bad," I promised.

--- the next day ---

Elsa's POV

"Go outside and train. I don't want you freezing the lair again," Pitch said. I did a little curtsy and went outside to the entrance of the lair. I was feeling much better today. Every time I started to feel sad, I would remember Jack and smiling and laughing. It helped chase away the cold inside of me.

Outside in the open air I felt even better. It was a beautiful day, and much nicer than being in Pitch's lair.

I started practicing aiming my frost. I tried to make it go as fast as possible, and then I tried to make it change direction in midair.

"Looks like you've been busy," Jack said from behind me. I turned around and smiled when I saw him. He smiled back.

"You came back! But why? Pitch will kill you!" I said.

"So what? He doesn't scare me. I've beaten him before," Jack said.

"I'm glad you're so confident," I teased.

"If you don't like Pitch, then why do you serve him?" Jack asked while leaning on his staff.

"Because if I don't, he punishes me. And where else would I go? I live longer than any mortal. I would never be able to be adopted. My mother is dead, and I never knew what happened to my father. The Guardians probably hate me and want to get even with me for almost killing them all those years ago," I explained.

"That's not entirely true," Jack said.

"And I don't entirely believe you," I said.

"Hi! I'm Olaf, and I like warm hugs!" A voice suddenly said. Jack and I both turned in surprise. The little snowman I had made was standing there staring at us.

"Well that's interesting," Jack said while kneeling next to it.

"It can walk... and talk..." I said slowly. Olaf turned to look at me.

"It's you! My maker!" Olaf said happily.

"I am?" I asked.

"You made me. Don't you remember?" Olaf asked.

"Of course I do," I said. Olaf cheered and hugged my knees.

"Has your snow ever done this before?" Jack asked.

"Not that I know of," I replied.

"I know my snow never does this," Jack said.

"What am I supposed to do with him? As soon as Pitch sees Olaf, he'll destroy him," I said.

"I can stay hidden!" Olaf promised.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Of course! How hard can it be to hide in all this snow?" He asked.

"The snowman had a point," Jack said.

"If you can stay hidden, then you can stay here," I finally agreed. Olaf cheered again.

"Now that that's all settled... SNOWBALL FIGHT!" Jack burst out, scooping up snow and throwing it at me. I ducked and threw a snowball too, laughing as I did.

???'s POV

I watched the snowball fight with great interest. Elsa was laughing. Actually laughing. And what was that little snowman running around with them? She could actually bring snow to life? How interesting...

"I must thank you Jack, for trying to free Elsa. But surely you realize it will never work. It is never easy to drive out the darkness," I said softly.
