Final Goodbye - Chapter 80

Zayn's P.O.V. -Grab tissue-
(November 11th)
It's been a whole week since the final incident with Louis, and I began to feel glad that I had delayed the funeral until this day. I didn't know Harry was going to get shot, or that any of that was going to happen, but I delayed the funeral because I needed a little more time to ready myself for this day. It turned out that delaying it was a great idea because Harry had been shot, and now, he was okay to come to the funeral. He's only in a small amount of pain due to the painkillers they put him on, but he was definitely doing better.
Caraline broke down when I had called to let her know that Harry was in the hospital, and she didn't understand the world. She rushed to the hospital to stay by his side, and I'm genuinely happy Harry has someone as good as Caraline. I knew she would treat him well, and I didn't have to worry about him treating her bad. Harry loved Caraline.
I had my family with me, and I sat on the couch with Jasper on my lap. He was messing with my car keys, and I just watched him, still in a state of confusion on how I'll ever be able to tell him about his mother.
My mom came out of the kitchen with Safaa by her side, a cup of water in her hands. "Zayn, are you ready to go?" she asked, generous gentleness in her voice.
"Yeah, let's go." I stood up, lifted Jasper up with me, and putting him on my hip as I walked. Doniya was waiting outside with her daughter and husband, and Waliyha was sitting on the swing chair, rocking slightly. "Come on," I said to them as the harsh sun hit my face as I stepped outside.
I put Jasper into his car seat, making sure the seat belt was tight enough around the car seat, and I slid the door closed before getting into my car. Putting the car into drive, I drove down the wide street, making a left onto A, which would take me straight to the freeway.
I turned on the radio, turning it down so that it wasn't too loud, and I listened to the song that played. It was a love song about how the guy would be all he promised to his girlfriend's dad that he'd be, and they would be together forever. It was about building love freshly, and saying I do... It brought tears to my eyes because I always thought of my life with Perrie just like that song expressed.
After 45 minutes of driving, I parked the car outside of a tall, black fence, and I turned off the ignition. Silently, the radio now off, I watched as my family walked through the gate of the cemetery, which was located behind a small local church, and I just sat in the car. An empty feeling coursed through me, tearing away at me. It was as if something was slowly eating me away, every feeling at a time.
Tears welled up in my eyes and I closed them tightly, laying my head over the steering wheel, my hands tightening around it. I let out a sob that sounded like a dying whale, and I held back the tears. My chest tightened in pain, and sat up, looking back at the beautiful baby in the backseat, his eyes innocent and unknowing.
Wiping away some tears, I took a deep intake of breath, which came out shaky, and I opened the car door, stepping my foot outside before fully standing up. My hand held the car door as I took in the view of trees, and a small supermarket across the street. If you looked down the street, you could visibly see a high school.
I closed the door and opened the back door, unbuckling Jasper and taking him in my arms, sliding the door closed. He made cute little sounds as I walked through the black gate, taking the first step into the cemetery. Walking through almost knee-high grass, I turned the corner and there everyone was. Standing around talking. There voices were quiet.
"Hi," I said as I walked in. Mom gave me a sympathetic look, and Harry and Caraline walked over to me. Harry pulled me into a brotherly hug.
"I'm so sorry you have to go through this, but," he pulled away and looked around, "you're not alone. We're all here for you." I nodded at his words, unable to properly form words. Jasper began to whimper, almost crying, and I bounced him a little in my arms.
"Perrie was a wonderful woman," Caraline said, giving me an apologetic smile. "We can never guess why things like these happen." She was wearing an ankle length black, t-strapped dress, her hair pulled into a high bun. She had dark makeup around her eyes. Harry wore a black tux with a dead purple tie, and his hair was...well. It was his hair. Curls that fell over his eyes.
"Thanks, guys," I said, nodding at them. I walked past them and up to my mom, who was with Safaa. "Hey."
"Hello, Zayn." She wrapped me in a hug before gently pulling away, Jasper in my arms. "Let me take him for a minute." I handed him to her and she held him close to her chest motherly.
"You're going to be okay," Doniya said to me from behind, and I spun on my heel to face her. "If you ever need anyone, or anything, I'm always going to be available for you." With no way to possibly process words, I pulled her into a hug, my eyes finally giving in to the stray tears that fell down my cheeks. "Shh," she soothed. "It's okay to cry."
"I just c-can't be-lieve she's r-really gone," I cried on her shoulder, my arms tightly wrapped around her waist.
"It's okay. Let it on," she said, rubbing her hands over my back. After staying like that for another minute, I pulled away, clearing my throat, wiping away some tears.
"Thanks," I said deeply.
"Like I said, anytime," she stated, with a small smile on her face.
"Zayn," a voice said from behind me. I turned around and was welcomed into a hug by none other than Waliyha, who hugged me tightly. "I'm sorry about what happened. You don't deserve this pain."
"There's nothing anyone can do about it, unfortunately." I shook my head. I felt as though I'd let her down. Both times something had happened to her, and I wasn't there for any of it. I couldn't protect her as I promised. It wasn't a beautiful feeling that I was going through.
"You're very strong. Never let anyone tell you otherwise." She gave me a serious glare before turning to walk away. I looked around the graveyard, watching as family friends began to enter into the gates. I noticed Perrie's friends walk in.
"Hey," I said to the three ladies standing before me. Allie, Sade and Jade. Perrie's best friends, and her birther, Sade.
"Hi," Allie said in a whisper. I could tell she'd been crying. Under her eyes were red and puffy, and she sounded a little stuffy.
"Hello," Jade answered, giving a small smile over her dark lipstick. Sade just walked right past me without saying anything. "She's just a little distraught." Jade shook her head before slowly chasing after her friend, and Allie followed.
I walked over to a table that held packet food. Who could eat this? I thought to myself. I guess there were some hungry people there.
Soon enough the ceremony was starting, everyone sitting down in the chairs that were across from the casket, which was made of dark fine wood at the bottom, and a royal light wood at the top. Half of the casket was opened.
"We are gathered here today in memorial of the lovely, Perrie Edwards-Malik. She was a wonderful woman, and she had such a great, pure heart, and a humor anyone could laugh along with," he said, pursing his lips. "Perrie was a person you could love no matter what. She always wore a bright smile, and something I think we can all agree on was that she had the brightest personality a person could ever have. One thing that proved this was just how well she could get on with anybody she wanted to." He looked around the people in front of him, his eyes falling on me. He continued. "She was a great wife and mother, and sister and daughter." This was her father speaking, with a greying head of hair.
My mom passed Jasper to me from beside me, and I laid him over my chest. Harry sat on my other side.
"I remember this one time when Perrie was growing up. She would always head outside to play. She loved doing karaoke, and she would hook up the machine her mother and I bought for her outside, and somehow she'd always get the neighborhood kids to come and join her. I remember all the times I looked out the window and smiled at how much fun she was having..." He stopped speaking for a moment, looking down. I could tell he was slightly crying as he began to speak again, with a shake to his voice. "She would tell me stories about Zayn, her husband. I remember how when they started to go out, I didn't like him, and you might say that was because I was like most dad's, and that's just how they express themselves. But she would tell stories about how he'd taken her hand when she was afraid of the dark, or how she would rest her head on his shoulder. This one story was interesting. He'd taken her to a movie, and she was terrified by this said movie, and he put his arm over her and she smiled at him. But they ended up arguing about God knows what, and then he apologized and admitted to being wrong. She was surprised, I remember her telling me."
I thought back to that time, and I remembered it very precisely, word for word.
"I remember when she met Allie, her best friend. They would be talking all the time, and Perrie always wanted new makeup that the both of them would try on together." He continued his speech, which was very depressing, might I just add.
He finally got to condolences on all her loved ones, and that was when a stray tear rolled down my cheek. Jasper was asleep and completely unaware of the situation before him. I closed my eyes and just listened to him, who also started to break down, and his wife rushed to his side, and wrapped her arms around him.
"Would anyone like to say anything about her?" he asked, sobs nearly escaping as he did so. I stood up and gently handed Jasper to my mom, who gave me an expression that read are-you-sure-about-this? and I nodded my head before walking up there and standing in front of the mic, which I had to position higher.
"Hello everyone, I'm Zayn Malik, Perrie's husband, and I would like to say some things." The crowd was silent as they watched me with intense eyes. "Though we had a lot of falling outs, and a lot of arguments, Perrie and I loved each other so much. I would've done anything for her, and I still would. It feels like a lifetime ago when Perrie was waking up from that coma, and I was doing everything in my power to get the perfect house for her. I had a lot of help putting the house together, and some of the amazing people I had with me are here today." I looked directly at the few people in the crowd that I was referring to. "Perrie opened my eyes to a lot of things in this world. One of which, things never come easy, and you should hold on to what you have for dear life, because you never know when you might lose it."
There were tears in everyone's eyes, including my own, and I took a small pause before I continued.
"Even though Perrie is gone, and that's something we all have to live with, she's still here with us. Even right now, she is still with us. Her presence lingers in the air. She's always right here." I pointed at my heart. "She never left for good. She always comes back. Maybe this time she can't do it personally, but mentally she is. As always." Her dad was breaking down, and her mother was too, the both of them holding onto each other with devastated emotion. "I'm sure if Perrie was here today she'd tell us to smile. She would say we should be happy anyway. I do believe that we're all completely grateful for all the time we had with such a lovely human. I believe that everyone in this room is affected by this devastating outcome, but all we can do from here out, is go forward. Because that's what she would've wanted."
I began to hear some sobs from different people in the crowd, but I tried not to pay much attention as I went on.
"Our son, Jasper, has to go on without his mother, and that doesn't leave a good feeling. But instead of thinking about the negatives of telling him in the future, I'm thinking about how he's going to hear nothing but the best of things about his mother. I'm going to tell him about all the good things. Like how it was when we both would get up in the morning to care for Jasper every time he cried and woke us up. Like all the times we took him to the beach. Like our wedding day, which he'd been there for," I said, licking my dry lips to moisten them. "My son will grow up with the perfect image of his mother, and because I know we all cared and loved her, with all our hearts, her memory will never die. From here out, we're just going to live through that memory, and we're going to show everyone how amazing she was." I didn't know what else to say. "Thank you." I walked down from the podium and sat down in my seat.
Her father took the mic again, not crying anymore. "Thank you, son, I think you opened a lot of people's hearts, my own included." I nodded to him. "As Zayn was saying, all we can do now, is move forward. She would've wanted that."
We all took a few minutes of silence, basking in the memory of Perrie. It got to the time of the service where you could put something into the casket, and I stood from my seat and walked over there, looking into the casket for the first time.
Perrie lay in there, lifeless. Her hands were held together at her chest, a line of pink lips on her face. She had a little bit of makeup on her face, and her blonde hair fell over her shoulders. She wore a nice, plain dress that was of light peach color. I sighed at the sight.
"I love you," I whispered through my shaky voice. "Thanks for all the memories." I put a necklace with a rose pendant on it inside of the casket, right on her chest. I bought it this morning. I looked at her one last time before walking away from the casket.
It was lowered into the ground, and I stayed an extra 30 minutes, watching as they buried the casket. When they finished and the dirt was in place, I walked up to the gravestone which was already placed into the ground. I had designed it myself.
Here lies Perrie Edwards~
A beautiful soul, mother, wife, sister and daughter.
She lived a lovely life, and was taken too soon.
That was only some of what the words read, but I stared at it, over and over again. Tears rolled down my cheeks. Mom had taken Jasper home.
I sat in front of the grave, just looking at the stone. I said a prayer, thanking God for the time He'd blessed me with to have her, and I did sit and pray for a good 15 minutes, just thinking and praying. I was happy she'd had a whole year with our beautiful baby. At least she got to see him grow a little bit. But no matter what happened from here out, I knew that she would want me to show Jasper the best sides of her, so I would, and I promised I would.
I stood up, looking up at the sky. There were a little bit of clouds in the sky, but they weren't grey clouds. They were pure white clouds, looking very comfortable to lie on. The wind was blowing roughly, and it was cold wind. Not cool. Cold. The air was a little wet, I took in, but it wasn't too humid. Probably because of how windy it had been.
Slowly, I made my way to my bag that sat on the chair I once sat in. Looking around the small cemetery, I realized I had been the only person still there - everyone else had already left. The cemetery was empty. Empty, lonely, and cold. No one there other than me.
There was a peaceful silence, aside from the wind, that wasn't awkward. It was just truly paining. It gave me all the more time to think about things, which wasn't good, because I didn't want to think about it anymore. I hoped I would easily be able to stop feeling the pain and weight of her death on my shoulders, but deep down I knew I was kidding myself.
I unzipped my bag and pulled a perfect, lively rose from the inside. Slowly, I approached the grave.
"They were your favorite," I whispered.
I slowly placed the red rose down onto the dirt in front of her grave, and I put a slightly heavy rock on the stem to keep it there, and I smiled warmly at the grave. I turned on my heel and left the cemetery.
I never looked back.
