Chapter 1: Arrival

Tears were
streaming down my face.
My throat felt as if it was burning. I curled up into a ball and threw up for the fifth time. It feels like I've been moving upward for centuries in this cage-like structure.

After a
moment I realized my throat stopped burning. I tried to stand up, but failed immensely and ended up falling backwards and hitting my back on something.

It was
too dark to see anything so I
stretched my arm out to feel what I hurt my back on.
A box?!

No wonder my back feels like it's burnin' I hit a freakin' crate!

As I
mentally cursed
my back I slowly realized slivers of light were shinning through the cage.

I tried
standing up again only to get pulled back down by gravity. The cage I was in came to a stop. I realized there were 10 boxes in the cage with me.

I hid
behind some, just as someone opened the cage up. "Where's the, greenie?" I heard a male voice ask. "I don't know, but, at least we got supplies." I heard another male voice reply.

The cage
shook as a boy jumped in, a box infront of me fell. "Woah!" I heard the boy in the cage thing with me yell.

"What is it?!"
Another male voice asked.
"Just a box." The one in the cage
says. I looked up and saw a bunch of boys staring. I scooted closer to the side where there was an overlapping piece. It provided enough shade so they couldn't see me.

Another boy
jumped in. The two boys started taking out the boxes. They were down to the last 3 boxes which I moved infront of me. Before the other boy jumped in.

"Hey Danny,
are you getting the rest of the boxes?" The other male asked. "Yeah I got it, Sam." Danny replied. He had a calming voice. But, I still refused to come out of hidding.

All-of-a-sudden
I felt something beside me. I just kept my face burried in my knees. "I saw you a few minutes ago, while we were taking out the rest of the supplies." Danny says. He smelled like hickory and apples. Whatever that is.

He sighs.
"You can't stay in here...I know you're scared and confused but, they're nice once you get to know them." I asumed he was talking about the other boys. I looked up and saw him smiling, while holding his hand out to me.

I took
his hand and as I did one of the boxes fell on my leg. I looked at my leg and saw blood flowing from it. "Its ok. Don't freak out." He said calmly as he took the box off my leg.

When I was
able to move my leg, the Danny helped me up. I lost my balance and fell on him. "Don't go to hard on yourself, darling." he said as he caught me. I smiled.

A rope
was let down to get us out. I climbed out of the cage with the Danny's help, and looked around. As I did one of the guys in the group surrounding me grabbed my chin and turned me around to face him.

"Well aren't you a small shank? Greivers e'll eat you up as a snack and still won't be statisfied." He said. Most of the other boys laughed. I shoved him back out of fear.

"Woah! Greenie's got strength." He says, while stepping towards me. I look for Danny for support, but, I couldn't find him.

The guys
start to swarm around me. I tried to say "leave me alone" but no words came out. I was about to cry, until, I heard a loud, stern, and demanding voice.

"Leave The Girl Alone And Get Back To Work!" The boy yelled. Everyone around me ran off with their tails between there legs. The boy walked over to me.

I was intimidated
due to the fact that I'm quite short. I started shaking. He touched the side of my face gently. "You alright, love?" He asked in a gentle, British voice. I blushed lightly.

"I'm quite sorry if they scared you they get quite wild if the greenie's a girl. Say, what's your name anyway?" He asks. I snapped out of my daze and started to hyperventalate.

I don't know what my own name is!! Oh geez! He probably thinks I'm duine dÚsachtach! I knew from his perspective I looked liked an over ripe tomato.

He chuckled
and cupped my face with both of his hands. "It's fine if you don't know your name. It happened to all of us when we first arrived here. Anyway, mine's Ben." He said while smiling.

I tried
to say something, but, it came out as a coughing fit. I pushed Ben away and coughed into my arm. He instantly picked me up and ran me over to some kind of medical hut.

...

"Some of her vocal cords are eroded, but, they're healing, leading her to be temporarily mute." One of the medjacks said. "If she even tried to talk it would cause the healing process to take much longer." The other medjack said.

"Well I guess your not gonna to be able to talk for a while, love." Ben says. I shrugged, emotionlessly. Ben chuckles. "Well, thanks Ava you too Rose."

We walked out
the Medjack hut. Ben gave me a tour of the glade and explained the maze. It was a lot to take in, but, I got it.

He also
told me that I didn't have to work for a few weeks since my voice was gone and that I should stay around him for safety.

It might
not be that bad staying here afterall.
