Chapter Seven

"Jonathan?" Gloria asked in disbelief and shook her head frantically. "It's hard to believe he'd do that. He loves you, Jenna, and he's a good guy."
The sullen woman ignored the words of her friend and took a small sip from the full glass of alcohol in her grasp, while her dull brown eyes stayed glued to a random spot in Gloria's living room. The silent woman shook her head, smiled tightly and sniffed then touched her cheeks that had dried up mascara stains trailing down them. She chuckled then relaxed perfectly on the couch she was sitting on.
"To think that I had already put everything aside for him, only for me to find him having some sort of sexual call with his supposed best friend," Jenna said in a dry tone. She smacked her lips then shifted her gaze to Gloria who had sympathy written all over her face.
"I really don't know what to say to you-honestly. I can't believe that Jonathan actually cheats on you," Gloria said and pulled her thighs close to her chest and flickered her eyes on to the surface of the coffee table between them.
Jenna shrugged dispassionately. "Normally, I would feel threatened about all these but," she smiled. "I barely do because, I read somewhere that any man who cheats has a low IQ and I can't believe I actually fell for him and worst of it all, I'm married to him. A dumb man. I feel so stupid at this point."
Gloria sighed. "Don't you think you should talk to him or even call Vera and you two speak to each other about all of these?"
"Excuse me? What am I supposed to talk to them about? That we should have a threesome with his best friend? Or she can have my husband anytime she wants?" Jenna laughed momentarily then frowned. "I wish there was a way to make him regret ever doing this to me."
Gloria stood up the moment Jenna rose up in a staggering manner. She watched as her drunken friend looked around the room like she was in search of something until she picked up her phone and stared at it with a wide smile on her makeup stained face.
"What are you doing?" She asked cautiously, her eyes moving from the device in her shaking grip to her blank face.
She beamed. "Trying to call my husband. I want to know if he's enjoying his time with Vera. If he doesn't answer, well, that would prove that he is sleeping with that woman."
Jenna staggered over to another couch and sat on it then unlocked her phone. She took a large gulp from her drink then proceeded to dial her husband up. The phone rang for a moment but he didn't respond which made her throw the phone across the room, which almost hit Gloria who had ducked in time.
"Are you out of your mind?!" The bob haired woman hollered in anger and marched up to a sulking Jenna. "Why did you throw your phone like that?"
Jenna grimaced. "He's with that slut! I knew it! I've only been here for like an hour and Jonathan always answers my call on the first ring. He didn't even answer my call and I know that!" She paused, index finger up in front of her as her breath hitched with eyes brimmed in hot and heavy tears. "I know that they are together at this moment. Kissing each other, t-touching each other, they could even be in love with each other. What am I saying? They love each other."
Gloria scoffed. "Are you even sure? Stop exaggerating things. What if we go back to your house and see nothing? What if he's just fast asleep or even worried about you?"
Jenna shot up on her feet and pointed angrily at Gloria who raised her hands in surrender. She dropped her hand and ran it over her face to her bushy mane.
"You are my friend and I expect you to support me and not defend that man. And I will prove to you that they are together," Jenna snapped her fingers with a stoic face, and looked around the room. "Where is my car key?"
"Whoa, whoa, you're not going anywhere in that drunken state, alright?" Gloria said, holding her back but she proved stubborn and thrashed her way out of her tight hold.
"Just let me go, Gloria. I just want to be done with all of these, it hurts a lot, please. Once I figure out why he's cheating on me, the better." Her voice came out cracked and thick with pain. "Just let me go."
"Fine, I'll drive but don't do anything stupid," the other woman replied after taking a deep breath then walked towards the hallway of her apartment.
Jenna smiled in satisfaction and zigzaged her way to the front door. She leaned on it with her forehead, trying to keep her breath at a minimum and mind calm, but she couldn't. More thoughts of what Jonathan and Vera must've been doing behind her back, clouded her mind. She moved away from the door and raised her clenched fist to punch the door. Before her fist touched the wooden door, she felt a warm grip around her wrist and a tug in the direction of the living room.
"Let's not hurt yourself now," Gloria said and stepped back before waving her hand at the door. "Let's go see for ourselves and don't say anything to Jonathan or accuse him of cheating on you if you see him doing nothing but relaxing or something."
A frown masked her face as she glared at the shorter woman standing beside her with soft pleas in her brown watering eyes. It sent a jolt of shudder down Jenna's body at the thought of what her friend was doing.
"Quit defending him. I swear, if you keep doing that, I'll hate you for the rest of my life, and let's go! I know something is wrong and what my eyes saw earlier is enough to tell me a lot. Now, can we go?"
Gloria nodded and opened the door, Jenna walked out and the other woman sighed heavily.

Jenna perked up on her seat when the scowling woman beside her stopped the car a few feet away from their massive and lit house. She moved her gaze from front doors to the glass window where their room was located. The window was open, and the curtains danced to the soft breeze.
As her heart began to ache and beat rapidly, she stuffed her thumb into her mouth and bit her nail then her gaze flickered over to Gloria who was giving her a look- one raised eyebrow and eyelids drooped slightly.
"What?"
"Are you still sure about this? What if you go in there and see something that'll cause you more heartbreak?" Gloria demanded with a roll of her eyes.
Jenna sighed, sat up straight and cracked her fingers and after a taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open then stepped out of the car. She kept her steady gaze on the front porch and walked slowly and quietly towards the door. When she reached the grand door, she kept her hand hovered over the metal handle then shook her head before moving to the window by the door.
The afro haired woman stood by the window and gazed inside the house where she could see but didn't find any trace of Jonathan or Vera. She bit her lip then proceeded to open the door quietly, and cautiously looked around the expanse of the large living room.
The room was dim and the only source of light was coming from the chandelier, suspending from the wide ceiling. The only sound she could pick up was the soft hums of the air conditioners, and the cries of crickets outside.
"Why is the house so quiet?" She whispered and was about to take another step into the house, when she heard a loud thud upstairs, which subconsciously made her snap her head in the direction of the bow shaped double stairs across the room.
At the strong pull of curiosity, she tied her robe tighter around her slim waist then made her way up the grand steps. She got to the hallway and looked around the area and quietly made it to the door of their bedroom, which was slightly a jar.
Jenna placed her hand on her beating chest as she felt her body go numb. Her eyes slid shut and her breath leveled down before she opened them and exhaled through her lips.
"God, please," she whispered, and tenderly touched the smooth and cold body of the door with the tips of her fingers before gripping the edge of the door. She pushed it back and gulped.
On their large matrimonial bed, were Vera and Jonathan holding each other in their arms and fast asleep. Jonathan's hair was ruffled and over half of his face while Vera's face was buried in the crook of his neck with the blanket over her shoulder, obscuring half of her face. The thick blanket had been moved aside to show Vera's smooth leg that was across his lower body- she felt her lungs choke up.
"No," she whispered in a hoarse voice and placed her hand over her mouth as she felt the world tilt under her feet. She shook her head then backed away only to bump into Gloria who shushed her immediately after she had spun around.
Jenna motioned to the bedroom then at her heart. She bit her lip so hard as her heart emitted more pain and heaviness. She held her breath and hurriedly walked away from the scene and down the steps. She ran past the wide living room and ended up at the front door.
"What did I ever do for me to deserve this?" She asked under her heaving breath as more tears flowed her cheeks. "I know that I am not the complete package to him anymore. I mean, look at Vera; she's beautiful and has the looks of a model, her nice hair, her face and the way she shares such a strong bond with him, how can I compete with that? Is it because I'm not white? Because I am half black and white?"
She slid down with the help of the door and squatted on the cold floor, where she wrapped her arms around her exposed legs. She clenched her eyes tight as the need to scream pounded against her lungs, coupled with the stabbing pain in her heart and mind.
"It's okay, Jenna. Come on, let's go. There's nothing you can do about it anymore except divorce in my opinion," Gloria reasoned which made her stand up straight with a shocked look on her face.
"Divorce?" She whispered harshly, eyeing the Bob haired woman.
Gloria nodded.
"No, it won't work so easily, no it won't. I won't give him his freedom so easily, Gloria. You see me? Jenna isn't going to let things slide so easily this time around, because I've had enough of this bullshit and they'll regret ever hurting me this way," Jenna spoke in a threatening manner and turned towards the door.
"Where are you going?" Gloria's soft voice stopped her short.
"I'll be right back. I want to simply clear my head and plan what's next." With that, she stepped out of the house, leaving the door wide open.

Jenna drove as fast as she could over the slightly lonely highway of New York. She kept her grip on the steering wheel so tight that she could barely feel them anymore. Her eyes were bloodshot and vision blurred with tears, her heart racing as fast as she was driving and mind going more mad by the second as thoughts of her husband swam around in her head.
"This will just be the beginning of the pain you've caused me, Jonathan," she growled and increased her speeding. "You promised never to hurt me! How could you do this to me?! You said you'll love me for the rest of your Goddamn life. What happened to that? Why did you marry me when you knew you hated me and loved someone else?!"
She cried out in pain as she remembered everything they had been through, and the promises he had made to her- it doubled the pain in her heart. With a deep growl, she pushed her foot against the gas pedal and the car zoomed past the few cars on the lit road.
When the familiar sounds of sirens reached her ears, she glanced over at the rear view mirror and rolled her eyes at the flash of blue and red lights behind her.
"They better not infuriate me the more," she stated dispassionately and kept on speeding through the slightly busy highway. She was so fast that she did not see the incoming car on her right, until it slammed into her own from the side, shifting her car to a stop in the middle of the street, close to a coffee shop.
The blaring sounds of sirens from both cars echoed through the night while some chattering men and women rushed over to Jenna's car while others checked the other damaged car.
"Hello? Can you hear me?" A man shouted into the car but got no response but smoke coming off from the wrecked side of the car.
A cop, younger than the first man approached the car and cupped his hands on the sides of his face as he peered through the tinted glass of the wrecked car. The side of the car was damaged and sunken deep inwardly, leaving the opposite side normal.
"I don't think anyone survived in there," he said and turned around to signal at the other cop standing by their flashing car, who nodded and spoke into the device on his chest.
The police officer stared back at the smoking car and fixed his hand into the slight opening on the broken door, then pulled hard until the door creeked open in a bent manner.
"The ambulance is on its way!" Someone shouted from a distance, getting their attention.
The officer looked back at the smoking car and waved his hand inside the car, he gasped as his eyes dropped on a bloody faced Jenna whose head was cushioned by the deployed air bags.
He shook Jenna before she moaned in pain and carefully carried her in his arms and out of the car.
