Chapter Eight

Jenna felt a heavy throb on the sides of her head and back of her head as she tried to open her eyes up, it felt like she was carrying tons of metal on each of her eyelids. She moved her fingers weakly then tried to part her lips that seemed like it was glued shut. She furrowed her eyebrows when she heard beeping sounds around her then finally got a strong whiff of antiseptic and medicines. A stench that reminded her of clinics or hospitals.
"Oh, you're awake," she heard a soft male voice somewhere around her and immediately opened her eyes only to close it back when white lights clouded her vision.
Jenna slowly opened her eyes and made eye contact with a man she failed to recognize. He had tousled black hair, thin brows and lips, striking blue eyes that illuminated his strong bearded face.
"Who are-" she coughed when her throat itched and throbbed.
The man rushed over to the side table and picked up a glass of water, tilted her chin in his soft grip then placed the glass on her lips. Jenna parted them and allowed him to feed her the water till she felt her throat moisten, as well as her mouth.
"Thank you," she said in a clearer voice. "Who are you and why am I here?"
A frown occupied his face. "I can't tell if you suffered a small memory loss but from the records found on your phone and a few documents in your car. You are Jenna Hanks, 25, married, Nigerian-American, and works at-"
Jenna cut him off. "I bloody know who I am, sir. I meant who are you?"
"Oh, I'm Luke Edgewood and I was the police officer chasing after you the night you were caught speeding."
"That's great." Sarcasm dripped from her words.
"On a serious note, we found some high intake of alcohol in your system a few days ago from the hospital and since you were at 160 on the highway, we have charged you but I knew that something drove you to be like that. I had to come back to check up on you," Luke replied while the bruised woman eyed his lean frame.
"I didn't ask for anyone's help. I can do what I want by myself and why didn't you just let me die in that car?" She hissed and clutched her waist. "I don't deserve to be alive and kicking!" Jenna screamed, pulled the IV needle out of her hand and rolled down the bed with a pained groan.
Luke instantly raced to her side and tried to help her up but she thrashed in-between his strong arms after he wrapped them around her body. Once he had pulled her half way up, she kicked him in the groin, which made him drop her and laid curled up on the ground in pain.
Jenna ignored the throbbing pain in her arms, legs and head as she crawled over to the door but before she could reach it, three nurses barged in, in alarm. When they had understood what was happening, they carried her up and dragged her back on her bed where she proved stubborn by thrashing despite the visible injuries on her body.
"Let me go! I want to get out of here. Leave me alone!" Jenna yelled as they pinned her down. "I want to go kill myself! I don't deserve to live with all these betrayal and pain, please. Just let me die!" She begged as she thrashed the more and finally got one of the nurses in the jaw. She watched in satisfaction as the female nurse backed away.
"Get the injection," the only male nurse amongst them, spoke and the second female nurse raced out of the room.
"Let me go, please! I want to be alone and die alone. Why can't you let me do what I want since Jonathan can do what he wants?!" She barked in the male nurse's face, tears running down her cheeks. "You understand me, right? You can feel the pain I feel since your duty is to help me. You really need to understand that I want to leave."
The other nurse who had raced off, came in with a doctor then handed the injection to the male nurse closer to Jenna. He placed the syringe between his lips then pressed her down the more before taking it out of his mouth and injecting the restless woman, who immediately calmed down and passed out.

Luke sat with his leg over the other on the small couch in the woman's hospital room, while staring at her in confusion. His mind kept replaying what had happened a few hours ago and how the effort to contact her family failed. He looked down at his feet as he tried to also put together what the man she had called Jonathan had done to the unconscious woman.
His thoughts were interrupted when the wounded woman finally woke up, her gaze lingered on the ceiling. His gaze stayed on her face, her bandaged head then moved down to her arms that had slight bruises and scratches, he couldn't see her legs because the blanket covered her up to under her breasts, and he was sure she was equally wounded under the thick blanket.
"When will I get out of here?" He flinched at her calm voice.
Luke blinked. "I don't really know and-"
"And why are you still here? It's not like you know me or anything. Don't you have work to do as a cop and all?" Her dry tone bounced around the small room and Luke stood up and approached her bed in small strides.
"I've been coming over to check up on you. Besides, you committed a lot of offenses and I just have to make sure you try to do something about it. And I apologise if it looks like I'm prying," Luke said and placed his hands in the pockets of his pants.
Jenna hummed. "Did anyone named Jonathan look for me?" Her heart began to hammer against her ribs when an emotion crossed the blue eyes of the man beside her bed.
"No. No one has, actually."
Jenna felt her heart constrict in pain as his words sunk into her mind. She gripped the sheet below her and swallowed the hot bile in her throat. She looked away from the man to the small window in her room, staring at the skycraper outside then her thoughts began play out the times Jonathan and Vera had been close, even before and after their marriage. She rolled her eyes, trying to control the tears brimming her eyes.
"Of course, he wouldn't. He's too preoccupied with Vera," she muttered only to her hearing. "He always cared about Vera more. Vera has always been his number one priority so many times."
Luke craned his head as he tried to get what the bedridden woman was muttering under her breath.
"Are you okay?" He asked and almost touched her hand after raising it towards the bed, but drew his hand back into his pocket.
"Can you leave me the hell alone? You can see that I am doing just fine, and on your way out, call me a nurse," Jenna ordered strongly and made eye contact with Luke who simply nodded and left her presence.
She shifted her attention to the sounds on the street while her gaze were fixed on the opened window. The sounds of cars and their horns reached her room, the soft chatter of people in the building and the people on the street filled her ears before her attention pushed back to the thought of her husband and Vera.
"I'm coming for you, Jonathan," she said to herself and glanced down at her covered lower body then grunted. The door handle rattle and her eyes darted around the small room. "You have to think of something. Come on."
The door was pushed open and a female nurse in a green scrub walked in and approached her bed with a smile. Jenna looked her up and down then smiled back.
"How are you?" The nurse asked and Jenna nodded then kept quiet as she checked the clipboard at the foot of the bed.
"Hi, can you take me to the bathroom? I'm really pressed," Jenna stated in a soft voice.
I hope this works, she thought as the young woman walked up to her.
The nurse nodded, pulled the needle and other attachments out of her body and raised Jenna into a sitting position.
"No, I really need to use an actual toilet," Jenna stated the moment the nurse wanted to grab the urinal bowl from the floor.
The nurse stared at her in concern but sighed in content when Jenna reassured her with a smile that she was fine. Gently, she helped Jenna into a standing position before walking over to the small door in the corner of the room.
"How long have I been here cause the pains are dull for someone who had an accident. I just feel a little strain on my thigh and arms," Jenna said as they walked into the small bathroom.
"Three days," the nurse replied and leaned Jenna over the sink then placed the toilet seat down.
Jenna looked around the room in search of something and when her eyes spotted her reflection on the mirror beside her, her heart dropped. She stared at the scratches on her forehead and jaw then looked away when the nurse held her elbow for assistance.
Here goes, Jenna groaned in pain with a straight face, since the nurse's eyes were on the toilet seat.
"What is it?" She asked, panicking.
"My head hurts too much," Jenna hissed as she gripped the sides of her head.
"I'm going to call the doctor."
"Please, do," Jenna pleaded and leaned towards the entrance when the nurse brushed past her.
The moment the nurse made her way past Jenna, she grabbed the nurse by the head and smashed her head into the mirror, causing her to hiss and lose consciousness. Jenna smirked.
"Sorry, but that had to be done."

"I am very curious to understand what is happening in her life. She looks like she needed real help. I could tell that she's holding in a lot but, how come her family hasn't contacted her for days now?" Luke asked himself as he walked through the busy floor.
Just as he got closer to the entrance, he touched his pockets and paused in front of doors of the large hospital. He swore under his breath then turned back around and jogged back till he reached an elevator.
He pushed the button repeatedly until the doors slid open and was about to dash into the contraption when he bumped into a nurse who had her nose buried in the big file she was holding to her chest. He let her pass and entered the elevator and pushed one of the multiple buttons on the wall.
After a few short minutes, he got out of the elevator and ran to Jenna's room. Once he got there, he pushed the door gently and walked in but frowned when he saw her bed scattered and empty.
"Mrs. Hanks?" He called out and moved closer to the bed. He touched it and raised a single brow. "It's still warm. Are you in the bathroom, ma'am?"
After asking and getting no response, he saw that the door was left open and spotted some glass shards at the entrance of the bathroom. He gasped then rushed to the slightly opened door, he knocked for a few seconds and when he got no further response, he pushed the wooden door open and gasped at the nurse who was only in her underwear and had blood oozing out of her face.
"Shit!"

Meanwhile, Jenna walked out of the hospital building with a smirk, gave the file she had used to shield her face to a passerby and let her hair out of the bun she had kept it then walked normally despite the pain in her legs to the sidewalk where she hailed a taxi.
Once one of the taxis stopped for her, she boarded it and relaxed on the leather seat then chuckled.
She sighed. "That was easy." She chuckled again and pressed her back on the chair.
