Chapter Nine

Years Ago

Jenna heaved a heavy sigh of frustration as she felt her car come to a stop on the side of the highway. She had noticed earlier that the car was threatening to stop and had decided to drive on the side of the road and just as she has suspected that it would, it did.

"Why now? I have an important meeting to attend in two hours, ugh!" She grunted and banged her hand on the steering wheel angrily then stepped out of the car. "God, what do I do now?"

She took off her suit jacket, tossed it inside the car and opened the trunk of the car from inside before walking over to it and checked for any faults in the arrays of wires and mechanical parts.

"Oh, no," she said as she tugged onto a burnt cord close to the car's battery. "It's going to take a few days to get this fixed and there are no taxis around to get me to the meeting."

Jenna crossed her arms and kicked the tyre of the car softly before leaning on the vehicle. She bit down on her bottom lip and stared at the passing cars in agony. She stood straight and walked back to the engine of the car to glare at it.

"This is the devil's doing," she seethed and out of the corner of her eyes, she saw a car pulling up, which made her roll her brown eyes until the door was opened and all she could see was the masculine back of a tall man until he turned around.

She took him in, from his expensive shoe covered feet, his jeans cladded fit thighs, his muscled upper body and tan face, his brown hair was a ruffled mass on top of his head, leaving some over his forehead. His lips were slightly full and parted, his nose a perfect point that coined perfectly with his sharp jawline and his light brown eyes underneath his bushy yet straight brows.

"Hi," he said and drew closer to her while she could only cross her arms and stare at him in annoyance.

"What do you want?" She asked sharply and noticed how he shifted his gaze from her face to her car. "Yeah, I don't need any help from you or anyone. You can run along now."

Jenna remembered the few movies she had watched and books she had read where strangers offered to fix a broken car of a man or woman. The next ordeal, did not always end well for the car owners, from what she had read and seen.

He chuckled and ran his long and thick fingers through his hair and stood beside her. His posture had her raise a suspicious brow at him.

"You look like you're in a hurry and I'm here to help you, Miss," he stated in an almost irritated tone and Jenna scoffed, brushed past him to her car to grab her bag then pulled out her phone.

"I'll just call someone I actually know or an Uber, other than take help from a stranger," she replied and dialed a number on her phone.

They both stood quietly as Jenna dialed the number, and while she looked hopefully across the busy street, he stood patiently with a pointed look on his face. After the call was not accepted, Jenna crossed her arms and rolled her eyes.

"How am I sure that after this, you wouldn't ask for my number or try to seduce me. Or worse, harm me." Her eyes darkened from its narrowed state and the man burst into a short laugh.

"I'm sorry for that laugh. You see, I'm not a weirdo or anything besides, I already have someone who satisfies me enough for me not to look at another woman," he retorted and walked over to the car engine, looked at it then shook his head.

"What?"

"Maybe I should drop you at wherever you're going. That's work for an engineer," he pointed into the car's engine and Jenna scoffed.

"You could be a trafficker or a kidnapper and if you think you can use me, you're kidding," Jenna replied and he rolled his eyes.

"How many movies have you watched, Miss? Listen, I'm just trying to help and you look like you're heading somewhere pretty important," he pointed out and she shook her head stubbornly, which made him shrug and began to make his way back to his car.

Jenna immediately began to think of what would happen if she missed her meeting and how she would get a car at this moment and finally, she rubbed her face and cleared her throat.

"Sir?!"

He stopped and Jenna could sense the smirk from the man before he turned around with pretence innocence in his brown eyes.

"What is it?"

Jenna frowned. "Rub it in my face alright," she muttered to herself and gave him a fake smile. "You can drop me off."

A Month Later

Jenna struggled with her work bag, foam coffee cup and tablet as she made her way out of her work building, all the while grumbling in frustration. As she made it towards her car, her properties dropped which made her whine and bent down but in the process, another person did.

She raised her head and made eye contact with the man who drove her to her company one month ago.

"You?" Shock took over her whole being at his presence. She was not expecting to meet him out of the blue. Jenna had always took him as a stranger she was never going to see again.

"Hi," he said with a smile while he picked up her items. "Don't you have a bigger bag, I mean, you ladies have a lot of bags that can hold just about anything."

Jenna yanked her things from him and stood straight.

"Relax, I was only kidding," he said in defense.

"What are you doing here?" She asked with suspicion laced in her words and eyes.

"I came to pick someone up. It's nothing," he simply said in a dismissive tone.

"And why are you still standing here?" Jenna asked and he smiled, the sides of his eyes crinkled a little and the curve of his lips expanded, showing off his white teeth.

"I saw you struggling with those things from over there until you dropped them, so I helped you. I'm standing here because you haven't said a thank you," he teased and leaned closer to her face which made Jenna push him back with a shove of her small hand on his wide chest.

"You're crazy, can I go? In fact, move aside," she stated in a harsh tone and prepared to walk past him but he blocked her path. "What?!"

He smirked. "Want to have dinner with me tomorrow? Since it's a Saturday and all."

Jenna eyed him up and down like he was out of his mind before changing her posture to walk away but he stopped her still.

"Ugh."

"I know, I'm annoying but I'll stop until you say yes. And don't look at it as a date, I just want to be friends with you, that's all," he said and Jenna looked over his shoulder in thought for a moment before looking up at him. "What'd you say?"

She sighed. "Fine, only tomorrow and after that, delete yourself out of my life."

"Is that a challenge?"

"Hm, we'll see," she smiled.

Three Months Later

The laughing duo ran around the beach, Jenna's outfit; jeans shorts and a black shirt which was soaked while Jonathan, in his white knee length shorts and black shirt was equally soaked. They chased each other, also dodging when one of them almost caught the other.

They played until the sun set and made their way through the lit streets, with Jonathan's arm around Jenna's shoulder, while they chatted animatedly and laughed at the top of their lungs.

"Today was so great, thank you for making me get over the thought of work. The only time I had this much fun was when you asked me to dinner a few months ago," she said and poked his hard chest.

Jonathan chuckled. "You know, I am so happy that I made the right choice of giving you a lift and taking you out for dinner."

Jenna smiled. "Me too and I've never been the same way ever since then. Thank you."

Jonathan paused and turned her to face him, he held her by the upper arms and smiled softly down at her. He raised his hands to her cheeks and stared deep into her eyes.

"And ever since I've known you, things have equally been different. I see you differently, your smiles, laughs, your eyes, your heart," he whispered his last word as his thumbs caressed her cheeks.

Jenna swallowed. "Jonathan?"

"I don't know if I'm making the right decision but I can't hold it in any longer," he said and watched as confusion displayed on her face.

Jenna was about to open her mouth to speak but was cut off when he closed the space between them with a kiss. She gasped at the impact and hesitantly returned it until he pulled back.

He smiled, making her smile back in return.

Present Day.

Jenna screamed as hot tears rolled down her cheeks, she held her head and fell to the sandy beach and cried out her heart's content. She looked up at the bright sky, eyes brimmed with tears and nose clogged with snot.

"Why did it have to be me?" She cried out and bent her head down, crying harder. "I just wanted to be happy. Why did you bring someone who wasn't the right man to me? God, why?"

Jenna cried out as her heart stung like it was being poked with tiny needles. She gripped her hair as she heard the whispers of their time together as a loving couple. She got flashes of the times they spent together and love that grew each passing day.

"All I wanted was love," she said. "Why am I always so bad when it comes to love? Why do they always end up like this? I deserve love too."

She sniffed and raised her hands, then lifted the hand that had her wedding ring closer to her face for inspection. She touched the ring with her other hand and pulled it out, staring thoughtfully at it. She rolled the ring between her thumb and index finger with her lips bent downwards. She swallowed hard and wiped one of her cheeks with her other hand.

"What happened to our vows and love?" She asked in a broken voice. "You promised never to look at another woman and never to even think of another and I was the fool to ever believe you!"

She cried out and clenched the ring in her hand as she broke down again. She raised her hand and was about to toss the ring into the churning sea in front of her but paused.

"What are you doing, Jenna?" She whispered and flinched when she saw a version of herself that was dressed in the same outfit but didn't look like she had been crying. The version of herself was currently sitting beside her with a frown, like she was disappointed.

"You can't do that, not yet. Jonathan is your husband and you have every right to keep him. Why would you let another woman take him from you?" The fake Jenna asked with an eye roll.

"No, I just can't take it anymore," she replied herself and flinched when another version of herself appeared on her left. She looked back at the other one who just shrugged then glanced at the new one.

"Wha-"

"Pfft, it's not like that, Jenna. You're a strong woman and someone like you can't take nonsense. You have to fight for what's yours and celebrate in the end. Vera can't take your husband, Jenna," the second one said.

"She's right, take charge of your fate. It's yours to rule, it's yours to manipulate. Don't let someone else make you live in sadness and a heavy heart. Take charge of yourself right this moment," the first Jenna stated close to her face, making Jenna begin to hyperventilate.

"Make things yours again. You're not late, make them regret ever placing you in such a state," the second said close to her face also.

Jenna calmed her breathing when they stopped speaking then looked at both and down at her palm where the ring lay.

"'Till death do you part, Jenna. He is still yours until death says so," they both said. "So, no one can and will take him away from you."

"What's mine is mine. I cannot share the love of my life. We swore never to fall apart and if I keep up with my side of the vow, he will do the same and remember that we love each other so much," she said and eyed the ring again. "'Til death do us part, my love."

Jenna smirked as she slipped the ring on her finger.
