30: PROGRESS

This is the real chapter 30!! Last chapter was an April Fool's joke. I'm,,, actually kinda surprised so few people called me out on it??? And I can't help but wonder why? Did you not realise the date? Or did you just not think someone would be dumb enough to write a whole goddamn story as a joke?? I'm not being snarky or anything, I'm genuinely curious,,

Honestly I feel a little bad because everyone was so enthusiastic about that wild Villain AU twist but,,, it was all false,,, I lied to you, I'm sorry,,,

But anyway uhh,,, here's the real chapter and the Discord server, if you wanna join the xamily and get adopted by Xult mum Ness: https://discord.gg/DSBF4dP

The bed was soft and warm. A thin blanket was draped over him. Izuku didn't know how to feel about the fact that he recognised he was in Recovery Girl's office without even opening his eyes. He kept still, listening to his surroundings and doing his best to recall what had happened.

Someone shifted nearby, presumably in a chair next to the bed. A heavy sigh followed the movement, deep and ragged and stressed, and – ah, yeah, that's Aizawa. There was a slight weight on the mattress next to where he lay, indicating the man was probably leaning on it somehow.

"...you called me Izuku," he croaked out in realisation, forcing his tired eyes to open so he could blearily squint at the dark mass to his right.

"What?" Aizawa lifted his head from the mattress, brushing his hair from his face.

"When I was..." Izuku glanced around the room, trying to find the words. "...out of it, you called me Izuku, not Midoriya."

The teacher blinked slowly, pulling himself up into a proper sitting position with a soft groan. "You weren't listening to me."

"No change there," he quipped with an attempted smile.

Aizawa snorted, languidly reaching over and grabbing a glass of water to hand over. "Drink. You almost died."

Izuku clumsily fumbled with the glass, just about managing to take a sip. "How long have you been here?"

He shrugged with one shoulder, scratching at the scar on his cheekbone. "Not long. Recovery Girl wouldn't let anyone see you until a few hours ago."

"And... how long have I been here?" The boy asked hesitantly, downing another mouthful of wonderfully cool water as he looked out the window at the reddening sky.

"About a day," he responded tiredly.

"Ah," Izuku muttered. "I missed a lot of lessons... People must've been worried..."

There was a pause while he downed the rest of his glass, placing it on the side table and briefly assessing himself. No bandages or pain, which made sense, because it seemed like the pain was somehow inflicted mentally, leaving no lasting physical wounds but enough stress to cause negative effects.

"An amnesia-inducing seizure," he said suddenly, amused scorn in his tone. "That's the lie you came up with to explain what happened to me?"

"It worked, didn't it?" Aizawa huffed with a raised eyebrow. "I had to give some sort of explanation, and it's not my secret to tell."

"Oh," Izuku breathed, a rush of affectionate warmth blooming in his chest. "Thank you, sensei."

The door slid open and a small figure entered. "Good to see you awake, Midoriya-kun," Recovery Girl stated. "Of course, I did ask Aizawa-kun to tell me the moment you woke up so I could check you over."

"I forgot," Aizawa grumbled, crossing his arms and leaning back in the chair.

"Just like you forgot to leave when I told you he was stable and you could get back to your class this morning?" She said with a somewhat sly smile, stepping up on a stool to get a closer look at her patient. "How much pain were you in?"

"A lot," Izuku answered distractedly, tilting his head quizzically at his teacher. "I thought you told me you hadn't been here for long?"

The nurse chortled slightly. "Oh, yes, he would say that to keep up appearances of being the tough, emotionless teacher. But dearie, a lot isn't a concise measurement. On a scale of one to ten, please."

"Um... A six...?" At the withering looks he got in response, he shrank down sheepishly, fiddling with the edge of the blankets. "Maybe more like a thirteen..."

"Oh, dear," she tutted with a faint frown. "Yes, that does explain why you went into circulatory shock. This time-travel thing isn't very safe for you."

"It's just because I did it twice in quick succession, I guess it was more than I could handle," he admitted, his green gaze shifting from her to his teacher, squinting with subtle mischief. "Aizawa-sensei, were you worried about me?"

"You would be too if you saw the state you were in," Aizawa stated drily, pursing his lips. "Don't do that again, or I'm grounding you."

"You can't d-"

"I'll get Yagi to ground you," he amended with a dangerous glare.

Izuku gasped softly, eyes widening. "You wouldn't."

"I would," he confirmed, a sharp grin pulling at his lips.

"Nii-chan..." The boy whined, trying to keep a serious expression but ultimately failing.

"It's one thing to tease Yagi-kun, but I'd never thought I'd see the day where a student teases Aizawa-kun." Recovery Girl shook her head in amusement. "Goodness. Do you plan on adopting the entire UA faculty?"

"I might just do that," he paused, flashing a sweet smile. "Obā-san."

The chuckling he got in response only made him grin wider.

"Whenever you have one of those seizures, you go back to your time?" Shouto summarised after the explanation. "It sounded painful."

"It was agony," Izuku agreed, cringing slightly at the memory. "But, the jacket appearing... I could try taking people, too."

"That might work." Tenya stared thoughtfully at the boy. "However, Shinsou-kun needs to agree to this."

"He does..." He muttered absently, crossing his arms and frowning. "If I ended up in this body," he paused, motioning to himself, "does that mean others I recruit would end up in," he waved a hand again, deliberately keeping things vague since Shinsou himself had entered the gym. "-other bodies?"

"It would be painful for them, too," Shouto said, looking doubtful.

"But it would be worth it for the end result. Information is always immensely important," Tenya added with a decisive nod, raising a hand in greeting to Shinsou.

The boy himself didn't return it. He narrowed his tired eyes slightly, slowly glancing between the three of them, faint guilt fading from his features. There was an unusual tension in his shoulders and caution in the way he moved.

"Hey, Midoriya," he muttered.

Izuku beamed at him. "Hi, Shins-"

Static filled his vision and his body stilled, ready to comply. That was... odd. Maybe he was just practising his Quirk and reminding them that they could easily be taken by surprise. In which case, that was a very smart lesson!

"You're hiding something from me. Tell me the truth," Shinsou snapped, stepping back from the group with the air of a cornered animal.

"Once, when I was a kid, I wet myself in school and I was so embarrassed that I sat in the koi pond to hide the evidence," he found himself responding automatically, showing no hint of his internal confusion – sure, they did have a secret, but why was Shinsou acting so seriously about it?

"...what? No – what are you three not telling me?" The boy took another nervous step back when Tenya raised his hands in a confused, placating gesture.

Izuku was too busy trying to work out why he seemed so afraid to bother breaking out of his control, although consciously made the effort to not reveal his time-travel secret just yet. "We were the ones who defeated Stain. Endeavour was just given credit to avoid trouble."

"You- what?!" Shinsou's hold slipped in his annoyance and bewilderment.

He pushed through the fog and broke free of Brainwashing, shaking his head and blinking a few times as he adjusted. "You could just ask me normally, you know."

The student did his best to straighten up, still looking immensely wary. "Aren't you going to... torture me, or something?"

"What?" Now it was Izuku's turn to be perplexed. "Why would I do that?"

"You were... talking about bodies and pain..." Shinsou grimaced awkwardly, seeming to realise his assumption was a little ridiculous as the other three shared an faintly amused glance.

"Oh. Yeah, I can see how you got that," Izuku admitted, trying to hide his smile with a hand. "But no, we're not going to murder anyone. You're right, though – we are keeping something from you. I guess... Now's as good a time as any to explain it to you, because I'll need your help."

"How come no-one is surprised when I tell them I'm literally from the future?" Izuku muttered, an entertained sort of exasperation seeping into his tone.

Kouda shrugged with a small smile, running his hands over the rabbit in his lap. "Everyone suspects there's something odd about you," he said in a tiny voice, dipping his head as a soft blush cast across his cheeks. "Not t-that you're weird, it's just-"

"It's okay, Kouda-kun," he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck and slumping in the chair. "I'm not really good at keeping secrets from my friends, so I've been pretty obvious about it."

"Y-you can call me Kouji, if you w-want," the boy mumbled, scooping up the rabbit in his arms so he could bury his nose in the fur.

"Oh! Then you can call me Izuku, Kouji-kun!" He grinned, grabbing his phone from his pocket and quickly adding the shy student to the group chat so everyone there was aware he knew the secret. "And, um, well... I actually told you now because... I kind of need your help."

Kouji raised his head, curious.

Tsukauchi stepped forward and rapped his knuckles on the front door. Kouji was trembling nervously, sinking down into his big knitted jumper as best he could. Izuku shifted closer to him and gently clasped his hand, squeezing it with a reassuring smile, keeping them interlocked by their sides. The shaking eased up a little and he smoothed out his shoulders, only flinching a little when the door unlocked and swung inwards, revealing a young lady with dark hair cropped to her shoulders. Toshinori raised his hand in a wave, and she blinked her yellow eyes in confusion, glancing over the small crowd gathered outside.

"Um... Hello," she greeted uncertainly. "Is there something I can help you with?"

"This sounds like an odd request, but could we speak to Moekasu-chan, please?" Izuku grinned awkwardly, fiddling with the string of his All Might hoodie. "You might remember me – I'm Deku, and this is my friend, Anima-san. Uh, I presume you recognise All Might, and this is Detective Tsukauchi-san."

"Oh, Deku! I knew I recognised you. Um- right, yeah, okay!" She stepped aside, holding the door open as she motioned inside. "I'm not in trouble, am I?"

"No, don't worry," Tsukauchi soothed, nodding politely and taking off his shoes.

They all settled in the living room while the young lady made some tea, settling the drinks down in front of each person on the glass coffee table. She scooped Moekasu off the armchair and sat down herself, tangling her fingers in the long, white fur. The cat stared lazily at the new arrivals, purring like a jet engine.

"Fukami-san, back in April, do you remember Moekasu acting a little out of the ordinary?" Tsukauchi inquired, flipping open a tiny notebook and holding a small pen above the paper.

"April..." She scrunched up her face in thought, frowning down at the feline. "Oh, actually, yes. Out of nowhere she started acting really cautious and would yowl and bolt whenever I tried to pet her, but a few days later she was back to her normal self. I don't know what happened. Ah, there was also an odd cut along her back, but I just presumed she'd been in a fight, but... she's never really been one for fighting, actually."

"I see. Would it be alright for Anima-san to speak with Moekasu-chan?" He pointed at the boy, who shrank into the sofa meekly.

"That's fine," she permitted, going to lift up the cat, only to stop in surprise as Kouji whispered softly and Moekasu happily padded over to him to settle on his lap.

"She says you're very small," Kouji mumbled to Izuku, who giggled into a hand. "And... All Might smells sick?"

Toshinori raised his hands in a calming gesture, shaking his head. "I'm okay."

"Right," the boy didn't look convinced but returned to whispering to the cat nonetheless. "She likes being young again and being able to run around without aching. She remembers seeing Deku on the television, but he looked different to you."

"The man who attacked you," Izuku said lowly, leaning down. "Did he say anything?"

"He didn't make any sense. He was loud and ranted to himself. She doesn't like him. He was very... very... intense. Angry. Violent." Kouji looked a little overwhelmed at the rapid irate hissing. "She wanted to run from him, but she'd been laying down in the sun for too long and her legs had gone stiff. He came up to her and grabbed her and-" His grim expression and the nervous yowling were enough to get the gist of the tale.

"I know, it's okay now," the boy murmured softly, cautiously reaching over and running his hand across her back, letting her nudge her cheeks into his palm. "He attacked me, too. He's caught, though, and we're trying to work out a way to send us back."

Dark blue eyes, as wide as moons, stared up at him. She let out a contemplative little mrrp, sitting up and kneading her paws against Kouji's legs, somewhat slumping into his torso while he kept his arms circled loosely around her.

"She... doesn't really want to be old again, but she knows Atsuko-chan- ah, Fukami-san- will be sad without her, so she'd be okay with going back," he translated, his angular mouth opening in a little smile.

"That's very sweet of you, Moekasu-chan." Izuku dipped his head a little, consequently moving into her range and getting licked on the nose. "I'll do my best to fix things. Look after Fukami-san," he lifted his gaze and raised his voice a little, blinking warmly at the young woman. "And if anything out of the ordinary happens, or if Moekasu-chan remembers something else important, feel free to call us."

"I will," she responded, almost sounding dazed, not hearing most of their conversation due to whispers but seeming awestruck at the idea of someone communicating with her cat. "Oh, uh, you're all welcome to come back here at any time. I think Moekasu-chan enjoys the attention."

Kouji giggled a little as the feline wiggled in his lap, purring pridefully. "She does."

Tsukauchi stood up and bowed, tucking his notebook away. "Thank you for your time, Fukami-san."
