Chapter Five
Five hours later, due to the rays of the sun scanning his face, Dan woke up. He groaned and turned onto his front. He put the pillow over his head and attempted to fall back asleep, but the door opened and in came Ben. He shouted, "Rise and shine, Dan, it's a beautiful day!" He pulled back Dan's curtains, and sunlight flooded the room. It went through Dan's pillow, and he moaned. Ben snatched away his covers, and the teen jumped. He reached for the covers but only felt his leg. Ben said, "Up, up, up! Up and about, soldier! I have something I've been meaning to give you for a long time now, but you won't be able to retrieve it if you just lie on your bed!"
"Uhh," Dan whimpered, and he threw the pillow off his head. He sat up in the coverless bed and glared at his father. His bangs hung down his face, and he snapped, "What, Dad?! What's so important that you had to wake me up 9:30 in the morning?! I need my eight hours of sleep!"
"Son," Ben hollered, "Close your eyes!"
"What?" Dan asked, "Why?"
"It's best you don't ask questions," answered Ben, "Just do it!" Dan obeyed. He shut his eyes, and Ben said, "Perfect!" He backed up to the door, "Now, follow my voice." Dan did, and he hopped out of bed. Ben said, "We're going downstairs, all right? Come forward, but keep your eyes closed." Dan lifted his foot and took two steps forward. CRASH!! He immediately crashed into the wall. Dan yelled, "OW!" and Ben's fists shook,
"That's the wall! I'm over here! My voice! Listen to my voice!" He nudged Dan out to the hallway, and he smashed into a second wall. He quickly recovered. Ben called to Geico who was also in the hallway, "Geico, help the kid out please!"
"Right, Master!" Geico said, and he took Dan by the shoulders, leading him towards the elevator, "Just take easy steps, Dan. That's it." Ben turned away and shut his eyes. He placed his palms to his face. He, Dan, and Geico took the elevator to the first floor, and Geico led Dan to the front door. Ben stepped in front of the teen and android and gripped the doorknob. He said, "Geico, thank you. Are you ready, Dan?"
"Father," Dan asked, "what's going on?" Ben didn't answer. He opened the front door, and a gush of warm wind passed through his and Dan's scalp. Geico helped Dan down the stairs and stopped him. Becoming impatient, Dan said, "Why are we outside? What's the meaning of this?" Geico let him go, and Ben came within reach of his son. He stood behind him and took his shoulders. Grinning, he said, "All right, Dan, open your eyes." Dan forced his eyes open and looked ahead. What he saw in front of him, totally blew his mind! Gasping, he brought his hand to his lips and hollered, "Oh my gosh!"
"Happy birthday, Dan!" Ben and Geico shouted at the same time. They laughed. Sitting in front of Dan, with a big blue bow tied to it, was a white, fancy-shmancy, three-wheeled, futuristic car! It appeared to be a cross between a car and a miniature spaceship. Frozen with shock, Dan tried to speak, but he stammered, "I-I-I don't be-believe it. You-you got it. Fa-Father, I-I don't know wha-what to say." Behind his back, Ben high-fived with Geico, and Dan stumbled over to the car. He knocked on its hood and peered inside to the golden-colored chairs, silver steering wheel, and many different buttons. Dan was dying to try the car out. He rushed to his father and threw himself into his arms. He tightly shut his eyes, "Thank you, Dad! Thank you so much!" Ben hugged him back and said,
"I knew you'd like it, Dan. Happy seventeenth birthday." He and Dan hugged for a long time. Eventually, when they disconnected, Ben said, "Say, Dan...," He tilted his head in the direction of the car, "why don't you try her out?"
"Are you serious?!" Dan shouted, "You want me to drive her?!" His father spread out his arms, and he answered in an excited tone, "Of course! After all, she's your car, right? Before you head out though, why don't you change out of your PJs?" Dan scanned himself up and down, and blushing, he said,
"Good point, Father. Thank you." Bowing to his dad, he spun around and charged for the inside of his house. Geico joined Ben, and he said, "Perfect, Geico. So far, so good. This is all going according to plan. Let's keep up the good work." He and Geico sat on the hood of the car and waited for Dan. After ten minutes, he appeared in the doorframe, wearing another new outfit. He was dressed in a dark blue shirt that was tucked into dark trousers with side pockets that were outlined in red. Over his shirt, he wore a lightweight red jacket, and his sleeves were rolled slightly up his forearms. His trousers were held up by a brown belt and silver buckle, and they were tucked into blue and black sneakers with gray tongues. His black goggles were back in his hair, and he held his hoverscooter under his arm. He observed his wristwatch and asked, "Hm?" looking up. At the sight of Ben and Geico sitting on the hood of his car, he opened his eyes wider and shouted, "AHH, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" at the top of lungs, "Get off the hood before you bend it! Who knows where you and Geico have been?!" Ben and Geico quickly got off the hood and held their hands up. Dan approached his car and pushed them aside. He snatched a hankie from his pocket and forcefully rubbed down the car's hood, breathing on it every once in a while. When he was satisfied about the car's look, he tucked the hankie into his sleeve and opened the door on the driver's side. He stuck his head inside and inhaled. Ahh, nothing beat the smell of a brand new car. Geico also wanted to sniff the car, so therefore, he rolled over to the door and reached for it, but Dan slapped his hand away. Geico flinched and rolled back a foot. Like most teenagers, Dan was going to be very protective over his first car. He climbed inside and sat at the steering wheel, buckling up. He couldn't wait to get out of there! He observed the many buttons and tapped his chin, saying, "Hm, I wonder which one is the on button. Let's see, let's click...," He started punching random buttons, "here, here, here, here." Geico started to panic. He jiggled his hands and said, "Whoa, whoa, Dan the Man, take it easy, dude!" Dan glanced at him, and Geico continued, "This isn't a video game you're playing with here! If you're not careful, you might mess things up! You really should have your father show you how to turn it on, okay, okay?" Slightly glaring, Dan asked,
"Are you saying I don't know my way around technology, Geico?" Ben spoke up,
"He's got a point, Dan. You blew up a little girl's hoverscooter when you tried fixing it." Dan turned red with embarrassment,
"That was an accident. Uh, fine." He put his elbows on his thighs and propped up his head, "You can turn it on, Father, but make it snappy! Don't just stand there! Step on it!" Ben didn't appreciate the fact that he had bossed him around, but he complied. He showed his son where the on button was, and Dan watched intently. The on button was next to the steering wheel, and it replaced the ignition. Ben pushed it in, and the car started up beautifully. Dan dropped his hands and asked, "Its working?" He grinned, "Its working! Yes! Yahoo!" Ready for takeoff, he gripped the steering wheel and put his foot on the pedal. However, before he could press the pedal, Ben stopped him and said, "Now, Dan, listen carefully. I spent half my savings account to buy you this car. It's your responsibility to make sure nothing happens to it. Just tell me you're being careful, Daniel."
"Yes, Dad." Dan boringly said, and he examined his nails. Ben finished with,
"If something does happen to this car, Daniel, then it's your responsibility to pay for it." Dan sighed. He didn't have time for his father's parental lectures. He wanted to get the heck outta dodge! Not meaning to be rude, he smiled and said, "I've gotta head out now, Dad. See ya later."
"Oh," Ben said, and he backed away from the car, "of course. The kid wants to play around with his new car. Very well then." Dan thanked him and rolled down his window. He pressed the gas pedal in, and the car rolled forward. Smiling, Ben and Geico waved goodbye. Dan stopped at the edge of the driveway, and he lowered his goggles over his eyes. Then, he turned onto the main street and started his drive. Whizzing down the road, he held his arm out the window and shouted, "Oh yeah, look at this baby go, go, go!" Ben and Geico chuckled, and once the car disappeared over a hill, Ben winked at the android and said, "Well, Geico, it appears Dan's in a better mood today. Quickly," He nudged Geico's shoulder, "into the house! Let's start packing!"
