"The way you cry, the way you smile. Do you know how much you mean to me? Words I want to say, words I lost..."
~Sing For You-EXO

"T-tah-ie..."
Taehyung blinked. Where am I? What? First thing he saw waking up was a pair of deep brown eyes, and he took a sharp intake of breath in surprise, but as he realized who he was looking at, he sighed and relaxed. Just Hana. He stared at her, blinking for a second. Tah-ie? Tae? Were you trying to say my name?
He closed his eyes for another second. It was dark, quiet, it must have been the middle of the night. I must have fallen asleep by accident...
He opened his eyes, again, Hana was looking at him, then he looked around the room a bit as his eyes adjusted. This was his room, which made sense, really, he remembered going in there sometime before. Marshmallow was curled up by his shoulder, his face not visible, just looking like a white ball of fluff.
Taehyung was going to get up, but then he realized Hana was on top of him, something he hadn't been awake enough to realize before. Wait, what happened? That hadn't happened, right? I... He took a second to remember what had happened, thinking over last night.
He remembered watching a movie with everyone, Kyung-mi coming home mid-way actually in a good mood, then about then, Taehyung went to put his jacket and tie away from his school uniform, because they were getting a little uncomfortable to keep on, but he remembered Hana followed, after that...
He hung up the jacket, and was putting the tie in his drawer when Hana reached around his waist and tickled him. After that he remembered laughing and taking a step backwards without meaning to, making Hana lose her balance and land on his bed, Taehyung following and landing on his back on top of her, to which she made a little squeak.
After apologizing for accidentally momentarily crushing her, it turned into a sort of tickling war. He couldn't remember exactly how he ended up in his current position with her, but it seemed like the only thing that happened was tickling and sleeping.
Hana's eyes darted over to the clock, displaying the time in red, block, luminescent letters. 4:23AM.
"My mom's going to be mad." Hana mouthed.
"Hana-ssi... It's okay..." Taehyung started, his voice still sleepy and sounding almost slurred.
Hana shook her head and started to pull away from him, but Taehyung took hold of her wrists and pulled her back on top of him. Hana stared wide-eyed at him, her cheeks turning pink.
"Ah...Sorry..." Taehyung started, he could feel his face getting hot. Why did I do that? "D-don't go, Hana... It's too late, and it's dark, and... I don't know if I'll see you again..." He hugged her tighter. "Please don't go...Jagiya."
Taehyung bit his lip and closed his eyes. Jagiya. Maybe I shouldn't have used that word, that was too soon, she'll think I'm being insincere...
Hana kissed his cheek and he opened his eyes to see her mouth the words, "You're leaving? Why?"
Taehyung took a deep breath. Hana was the only person who didn't know, and in that sense, he felt like he was lying to her. But how would he say that now? That he'd been in a mental hospital, that everyone thought he was crazy, that he'd killed his Appa to save a girl that only wanted to damn him?
"I...I don't want to...but I think...I'll have to, and if--."
Marshmallow suddenly shot up, barking and leaping off the bed, stepping on them as he went tearing toward the door, and then down the hallway.
Soon after, the doorbell rang. There wasn't a lot of things that could be at 4AM, that, Taehyung knew for certain.
He sat up, helping a confused Hana sit up with him before giving her a tight hug, squeezing her as tight as he could, shutting his eyes just as tight as he did so. When he let her out of the hug, he took a deep breath, putting a hand under her chin and tilting her head up to look at him. I still haven't told you, I don't think I can, I'm scared you won't like me, and I don't know why I should live if you don't like me. Taehyung leaned in and gave her a gentle kiss, or at least it started out gentle, he'd intended gentle, but it turned passionate when Hana put her hands on the back of his neck and pulled him closer.
He only pulled away when he heard Mrs. Park yelling downstairs. If he was honest, it had crossed his mind to run away, given the options, he could let them take him to the mental hospital, or he could make a run for it and keep running forever and give the police a reason to arrest him.
He contemplated what would hurt more, what would kill him the fastest, how either decision would make Jimin, and Jungkook, and Hana, and Kyung-mi and Mrs. Park feel. He was pretty sure what he wanted to do by now. What he had to do, he didn't have much of a choice.
And it didn't mean he wanted to.
"Taehyung?" Hana mouthed, her eyes full of concern. Don't look at me like that... She gently rubbed her thumb against his cheek.
Taehyung wanted to stay forever, but he reasoned with himself enough to slowly push her hand away from his face and get up. Before he left, he turned to face her once more since just leaving without a word didn't seem right. He couldn't find any words to say, so he just smiled, the full thing, boxy and square, the one she liked.
Then he turned and went into the hallway, the lights were off as he went down it, the only thing he heard was Mrs. Park yelling.
"Go. To. Goddamn. Hell, you pompous bastard! Rot there with all your damn medication, and I hope even your cold-ass heart won't make it any goddamn better!"
"Mrs. Park, some things...are of a different circumstance. You wouldn't understand, this is what's best for everyone."
"Don't you even dare try to tell me this is good for Taehyung, don't tell me that hurting him like this is f*cking good for him!"
"Now, Soo-young, even you must realize that Taehyung and things like him can't really be regarded as people. Most of the time, they think about nothing, they don't even realize what's happening. They acknowledge the immediate moment and nothing else. Do you have any idea, if unchecked, how many evil impulses can go through his mind in as little as a second? He's not a person, he could have killed you at any moment."
"Don't you ever call me by my name again, you sick son of a b*tch! He's more human then you, you filthy, jealous, spiteful, pig!"
Taehyung swallowed. I'm a person. I'm not mentally insane, but even if I was, I'd still be a person. I'd never hurt Eomma...
It surprised him when a hand came to his shoulder, and he jumped, looking back to find Jimin standing there. Jimin wouldn't even look him in the eye. "Where are you going? You're not going with him..."
He looked so sad, so scared. Taehyung wished he hadn't caught the emotion Jimin was giving off, or the worry in his voice. I wish I could tell you otherwise, but...
"Tae, you can't, I know you're not sick, if you..." Jimin swallowed, looking up at Taehyung. "I-if you take those pills again..." He didn't have to say anything else, Taehyung could take a guess at the rest.
Death. It's always just been a slow death.
Then he heard Mrs. Park scream. Not yell, but scream, "Let go of me, you--!" She screamed again, this time louder.
Taehyung blanked out, losing his train of thought instantaneously, just staring at Jimin for a second, who looked at him equally wide eyed. You're hurting her. How could you? Why would you? Don't you dare.... I'll... I'll... What will I do? What can I do?
Taehyung pushed Jimin's hand off his shoulder, backing away from him. I can't just listen to her scream, I won't. I don't care what happens... He turned toward the stairs and was going to run down them before Jimin caught him by the collar.
"Tae, no...! Don't do that...! It's what he wants...!"
Taehyung pulled away from Jimin harshly, then went down the stairs so fast he wasn't even thinking about the steps, or even all the noise it made. He almost hoped all the noise would make everyone look, just so he would leave Mrs. Park alone.
The living room was filled with about 5 people in white coats, one of them holding Marshmallow's mouth shut so he couldn't bark, and another one of them being the Head Doctor, who had his hands on Mrs. Park's wrists, holding her against the wall, her hands pinned above her head. And the other people are just watching? They're just watching him hurt her? Just watching him act like this? The sight was enough to finalize anything Taehyung was thinking, enough to make him angry, enough for him to forget about everything else for a moment.
The time going from the stairs to the Doctor was a blur, but he remembered specifically hitting the Doctor as hard as he could in the face, making him let go of Mrs. Park, in favor of holding his jaw.
Taehyung wished he could stop there. Somewhere deep inside he was yelling at himself to stop, screaming at himself to leave it at that.
But that didn't happen, on the outside, he was still reaching for the Doctor's collar, still punching him in the face whenever he smiled at him with that evil smile of his, to the point Taehyung's knuckles hurt and were bleeding, to the point there was blood all over the Doctor's face, be it from broken teeth, or bloody nose, it wasn't especially long at all before there was blood all over Taehyung's hands.
The other people in white coats were trying to pull him away, but in all honesty... it felt good. He didn't feel guilty, or even sort of bad about hitting the Doctor, there wasn't an ounce of regret, or remorse, or anything.
Even when they finally managed to pull him away, he still regretted nothing. I don't give a sh*t what they think, I don't care if this is what they wanted, it feels good. He just spent a minute catching his breath, feeling his heart pound, watching the Doctor wipe his bloodied face with his white lab coat, calm as ever.
"Well, Soo, I've proved my point, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. But what do you expect from someone who's parents dropped him off at an orphanage?" He spat a bloody tooth out on the floor.
Mrs. Park took three steps toward the Doctor. "Don't call me 'Soo' you dirty bastard, you lost the right to call me anything when nothing was goddamn good enough for you!" She grabbed him by the collar, pulling him down a bit, "And don't you dare say anything about Taehyung, if he thought I was being hurt, he has every right to beat the sh*t out of you."
The Doctor smiled. "I'm glad I left you. You're a sick little b*tch."
Taehyung blinked, looking down at the floor. Mr. Park left her...Does that... would that mean... Was that him? Did he... Did Mrs Park..?
At that, Mrs. Park slapped the Doctor hard in the face. "Out."
"That's just unnecessary, I've tried to keep calm and keep this all business, but you're making it very hard, Mrs. Park."
"Out! Get the hell out!"
"I have to take Taehyung with me." He pulled a bunch of folded papers out of his coat pocket, handing them to her. "Read it as many times as you like, I have all the right in the world, I own Kim Taehyung."
Own me? Taehyung swallowed. You don't own me, I'm not an object, I hate you. You. Don't. Own. Me. He took a deep breath. He'd decided already what was best. But it still pained him to have to do it.
Mrs. Park squinted at the doctor. "Out! Take all your Sheep in white coats with you! You can't take Taehyung, I'll burn you in--."
"It's okay, Eomma!" Taehyung interrupted, licking his dry lips when he saw everyone in the room looking, waiting for him to explain the sudden outburst. It felt like the room had an atmospheric weight to it. "It's okay..." It's not. It won't ever be, but I can't let you do this, I can't let you go through all this right now for me. I'm not worth it... And I'd be selfish to say I was. If he has all the documents, it's a losing battle. Nothing can dispute that. "I... I don't want him to make you lose your job... I don't... I don't want you to go through all this for me..."
Mrs. Park's eyes widened. "What?" She went over to Taehyung, pushing aside one of the men in white coats holding him. "Taehyung, I...I can't just let them take you... I want to go through all of this for you, what is a job worth compared to seeing you happy? You're worth every bit of the trouble...Taehyung..."
Taehyung licked his lips. Then tried to meet Mrs. Park's eyes, "I...I just... If you stop him now...He'll come back with the police, and they'll arrest you, and take me anyway. I think... I..." Taehyung paused seeing a few tears slip from Mrs. Park's eyes. "I love you, Eomma...I'm so glad that...that you took me in and helped me, and that..." Taehyung swallowed a wave of tears he could feel burning behind his eyes, when he continued, his voice came out an octave deeper, "You treated me like I was family... but... You should just let me go."
Taehyung couldn't bring himself to look away from Mrs. Park, though he didn't want to not see her cry like this, he didn't want the last memory of her to be seeing her cry. Watching each tear roll down her face, revealing how much this hurt her-- felt like it was his fault. I'm sorry, Eomma, it's for the best. If I don't, it will make it worse and I want you to be happy at least. You did so much for me. You helped me be happy again, to feel like I had a family for the first time in my life.
"You heard him, Soo-young." The doctor said, tone even, and with a small smirk on his face. He'd won, and he knew it, he'd always known he would, the smirk on his face made him as readable as a book.
Mrs. Park watched in silence as a pair of people in white coats took Taehyung roughly by the shoulders. Her mouth opened like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out even as they started leading him to the door. Please say something, please say it, before they take me away, say what you're thinking. I know I broke your heart, I didn't mean it, I just wanted...
I just wanted to make sure you could keep the family you have now. I wanted to make sure...at least all of you could stay together...
But she didn't say anything. Not a word, on the way out the door, she just stared, tears still rolling down her face, lip quivering.
Taehyung glanced away from her when he caught sight of three people sitting quietly on the steps. Jimin, Kyung-mi, and Hana... He smiled a little to himself when he saw them, though they each looked sad he was glad that he got to see them one last time.
Taehyung gave a small bow of his head, all he was capable of with the men in white coats holding him. "Th-thank you, Jimin, Kyung-mi, and Hana-ssi...Please tell Jungkook I said thank you too."
Kyung-mi hugged her knees to her chest, a stream of tears slipped down Hana's face, Jimin just covered his face with his hands, his shoulders shaking enough to tell he was crying.
He'd been keeping a straight face until then, trying not to cry, but as they led him out the door, he couldn't stop the painful tears that rolled down his cheeks.
