"There's a crime, but no criminal. Does it even make sense? There's a huge gap between a person who doesn't talk and a person who lives. Who will take my hand?"
~What The Hell-B.A.P
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jimin made Taehyung sit down, basically just pulling him to the ground. "Tae, calm down. Don't cry, Tae, nothing's wrong, you're okay."
No, everything's wrong, nothing's okay, why can't you see that? Taehyung sniffled and hid his face behind his hands. He didn't want anyone to see him cry like this, he didn't want Hana to see him cry like this. Not when this would be the last time she'd see him.
He felt hands grab his hands, not trying to pull them away from his face, but just gently rubbing the back of his hands. He peeked and saw Hana looking back at him, continuing to rub his hands. She looked sad, and mouthed, "What's wrong?"
I can't tell you. I can't tell you. You'd be scared of me, I don't want you to look at me and see blood. Taehyung leaned back away from her, shaking his head. Talking about it scared him too much anyway.
"Jimin, do you know what he's upset about?" Jungkook asked in a whisper.
Don't tell Jungkook! I'm not crazy, I'm not I just... Taehyung involuntarily shivered. He was scared. Scared of the police, scared of the doctors, scared that he'd never see anyone ever again.
The door to the roof opened, and an officer was standing there. Taehyung bit his lip hard, blinking back more tears.
"I'm going to have to ask you kids to come downstairs." The policeman said, his voice gruff.
Jimin gripped Taehyung's shoulders tighter. "What? Why? What happened?"
Taehyung had forgotten. Jimin knew. Jimin knew absolutely where Taehyung had come from, what he'd done to his Appa. Did that mean that he'd defend him? That he wouldn't let them take him away? Taehyung looked back at Jimin, he looked upset. Do you want me to stay...?
"That's none of your concern, down the stairs. Now." The officer said pointing to the stairs.
Jimin cursed the officer under his breath but got up anyway, pulling Taehyung up with him. He wanted to stay there, but Jimin just pulled him toward the stairs. Please, not there, please, I don't want to go back. Taehyung stuffed the charm Hana had given him in his pocket, just in case they tried to take it from him.
Taehyung wished there was a way to run away. He was good at running away, but he couldn't run away from these people, not on a roof, where was there to go?
The policeman led them all downstairs, following then as they filed down. Taehyung felt sick. He didn't want to sit in the back of a police car again, didn't want to have to stare out at the rest of the world for the last time again. Not like this, not after meeting people he'd actually miss.
When they reached the bottom of the stairs, The police chief stood, arms crossed over his chest, next to him was Jae-hwa, vividly speaking, her eyes wide with fake innocence and her voice choked with fake tears.
"...I don't feel safe, Officer! He's just out roaming around, I thought you'd make sure he couldn't hurt me anymore?" Jae-hwa said, he voice an octave higher then it normally was.
"Which is why he should be put away in a hospital, or a prison." The chief said, then came forward and grabbed Taehyung hard by the arm. "I don't know how you got out, but we're sending you back."
Taehyung shook his head. "Please...no..."
Jimin pulled Taehyung away from the police Chief. "You can't take him anywhere, and you're not going to take him anywhere!"
The police chief grunted. "That's interfering with police procedure, you want to get arrested, kid? I could charge you on something too, if it means that much to you."
Jungkook grabbed Taehyung's shoulder, the touch surprised Taehyung. "You can't just take him, what are you even charging him for?!"
"Murder. That's what I'm charging him for. Maybe breaking out of a perfectly good nut house." The officer said simply, taking out a pair of handcuffs.
"M-murder?" Jungkook's grip on his shoulder loosened. "Taehyung? Is...is that true?" Jungkook leaned over and tried to catch Taehyung's eyes.
At the mention of it, Taehyung looked down at the ground. All he saw was the moment of it, the blood, Jae-hwa screaming, all those empty bottles that were once filled with liquor, the sirens, the white noise. Appa. Appa. Appa...I'm sorry. "It...It's true, Jungkook...I'm sorry..." The reasons weren't that important, everyone thought he was just a murderer anyway.
He looked over at Hana, to see what she thought, she wasn't even looking, instead looking at her feet. He wasn't sure if that was good or bad.
Taehyung felt Jungkook's hand fall away from his shoulder. "I don't believe you. You couldn't have..." Jungkook grabbed Taehyung's shoulder again and turned to the officer, "You're not taking him!"
Taehyung looked back wide eyed at Jungkook, surprised he even still touched him. What? But you know now, it's the truth and you... Why would you act like this? Jungkook looked at Taehyung and smiled slightly.
"You're interfering with me arresting a criminal, you're aware of that?" The chief asked, sizing Jungkook up. Despite Jungkook's age, he was pretty tall, sizing Jungkook up wasn't easy.
I'm not a criminal, I'm not! I'm not... Taehyung licked his dry lips. He could see Jae-hwa smiling off behind the officer, just giddy that she had gotten the police here, that she had gotten them to come and take Taehyung away for a second time. Why do you hate me so much, Jae-hwa? Why do you want me to die?
"You can't take him, ask any teacher, ask the hospital staff, the head doctor," Jimin started, holding onto Taehyung tighter, it almost hurt how hard he was gripping Taehyung's arms. "He's my brother, and you can't f*cking take him anywhere!"
Taehyung froze. Brother? He couldn't have meant that. He must have meant...He must have meant... Taehyung looked over at Jimin, he couldn't decipher whether he was lying or not. Because he must be lying, just to say something so they wouldn't take him. I'm not your brother, Jimin, I'm just your mother's job. Don't say that. Don't lie. That lie will be the death of me.
"Officer!" Jae-hwa screamed. "You're just going to let him keep coming here everyday? You're just going to let him keep hanging around? I don't feel safe! What if he tries to kill me? What if he gets violent?"
The police chief turned to Jae-hwa. "Don't worry, Miss, until I have proof of his permission to be outside, he's not coming near here for a while."
Taehyung's heart dropped. Of course they'd listen to Jae-hwa. Jae-hwa hadn't killed her father, Jae-hwa wasn't weird like he was, wasn't declared crazy like he was. And Police thought everything a teenager said was lies unless they wanted it to be the truth, and the Police Chief wanted Taehyung in a box, didn't matter what kind of box.
The police chief turned to Jimin, sizing Jimin up, who was slightly easier to size up because he was shorter. "I take that means he's living with you?" When Jimin nodded, the Police Chief continued, "Then he's under house arrest, effective immediately." He pulled Taehyung harshly away from Jimin and Jungkook.
Jae-hwa frowned. She wasn't happy with this result. Her aim was probably to get Taehyung locked away again. So it wasn't today, she hasn't won yet, it's not all going away yet.
~~~
They stuffed him in the police car, there was nothing anyone could do about it. After the Chief grabbed Taehyung, Officers came to keep Jimin and Jungkook away. Jimin had to be held back. Taehyung was surprised. Deep inside, he hoped he'd see Jimin again, hoped he'd see Jungkook again, and Hana. They may have said House Arrest, but people lied. Taehyung was used to them lying.
He looked around at the bars on the windows. those familiar steel rods that governed his imprisonment, even for the short time he tried to tell himself it would be.
It brought back that day, crying curled up on the backseat, screaming that he wasn't crazy, that Jae-hwa was lying. He wasn't handcuffed this time, that was the only difference. Jae-hwa had still lied, they still thought he was crazy. He felt like he was going to cry.
Maybe just because of Jungkook and Jimin's actions, their words. Why had they done those things? Why did they say those things? Maybe...it's because...could they...? Taehyung clenched his fists in his lap. But no one ever loves me, they only trick me.
Taehyung turned his attention away from his lap, looking out the window as the world went by, at a stoplight outside, two kids played with a ball, tossing the big bright red orb filled with air back and forth, giggling and running to catch it when the other missed his mark. I've never played with anyone like that... Even at the orphanage, everyone avoided him. He smiled when one of the kids hit the other on the head with the ball. It hadn't hurt her, but she fell into the grass dramatically.
As the car started to go again, Taehyung tried to remember the exact feeling of when he used to joke around, how he'd get someone to smile for a second, even if they didn't like him, they couldn't help to smile when he did something silly or stupid. He couldn't imagine doing that now, but he tried to remember what it had felt like.
He couldn't grasp it, not quite, the feeling was too... He couldn't place that either.
When they pulled up to the Park's house, Taehyung was yanked out of the car roughly. They didn't lie. They led him up to the front door, the Police chief knocking hard on the door.
Mrs. Park came to the door, smiling at first, but then looking from the officers to Taehyung and frowning.
"Afternoon, Miss. Is this in your care?" the Chief asked, looking down at Mrs. Park like he wanted to fight with her.
This. This. I'm just an object? Bastard.
Mrs. Park's mouth fell open. "Taehyung's in my care, yes. Is there something wrong here?" She asked, looking around the officer to the police car. She looked upset to see it parked there.
"Only that he's a threat to the public, and I've yet to give his 'public interaction' clearance." The chief said.
Mrs. Park's mouth fell open, then she squinted at the Chief. "What the hell are you talking about? I'm a doctor, his doctor, you have no right over his actions whatsoever, this is--!"
"Ma'am. Whether you like it or not, he's on House Arrest until I see official papers." He shoved Taehyung toward her. "It doesn't matter what you say. He's disturbing a traumatized witness."
Traumatized?
Mrs. Park's mouth formed an 'O', she was speechless as the Chief bowed. "Have a good rest of your day." Then he went back to the Police car with the other officer that came with him.
When he was gone, Mrs. Park stamped her foot, then pulled Taehyung inside before closing the door. Taehyung was surprised when she hugged him. He didn't know what to do at the sudden embrace.
She ruffled his hair. "Are you okay, Taehyung? That asshole, I know that must have brought back bad memories. We could talk about it if you want..."
"Ah...I'm okay..." Taehyung said, still surprised. You're so close, why would you want to be so close? I've killed someone. Doesn't this remind you of that?
"I'll make a few calls, I'll see if I can get you back in school, okay? You'll be okay, Taehyung, I'll fix it. And I'll show that police officer." Mrs. Park came out of the hug and looked at him. Taehyung hadn't meant it, but he was crying, tears streaming down his face in ribbons. Mrs. Park wiped a few from his face. "I just bought a ice cream, do you want ice cream?"
Taehyung nodded, "Yes...I'd like that..."
Mrs. Park smiled. "You go ahead and change out of that uniform, and I'll get you some ice cream."
Taehyung gave another quick nod, then headed upstairs to change. Marshmallow came dashing up behind him, little legs working to get up the steps. He wondered if she could actually fix it. He didn't like school, but he liked being able to go outside.
When he got to his room, he just laid on the floor. Marshmallow crawled on top of him, little claws digging into his shirt lightly as he used Taehyung's body like an obstacle course to get to his face, where the poodle licked him repeatedly. Taehyung reached over and scratched the dog behind the ears.
What had Jimin meant by 'Brother'? It was a lie, wasn't it?
And what did Hana think of him now? He dug the little smiley-face charm out that he'd absently stuck in his pocket. He looked over it for a minute. Do you still want to be friends, Hana?
