The devil's gift
They were puzzled by their return to their secret haven,
Questions swirling about the man and his devilish caution.
Why did he say to be wary, what was his true intention?
Where was the promised money?
Why hadn't the police raised an alarm for Anthony and Sarah?
Their minds raced with uncertainty, in the quiet of their hidden home.
What was this new power they now possessed,
a shield against the police and all threats?
Anthony mused, "That was a strange experience."
"Yeah," Sarah replied, "it almost felt like a dream. Maybe it was."
As they sat up, a soreness in their upper backs emerged,
As if something was attached or embedded, a mystery yet to be purged.
When they looked at each other, confusion gave way to shock.
On their backs were not the expected powers of legends,
but something many only dreamt of-wings.
Light gray and ethereal, these wings were their new reality,
a gift or curse they had yet to understand.
They could fly, not like Superman,
but with the grace and freedom of birds,
their destinies forever altered by this strange encounter.
"I can't believe it," Sarah said, in awe,
"We're like angels or birds, without a flaw."
The mysterious man now behind them lay,
As they marveled at their wings, testing their sway.
With newfound freedom, they soared the skies,
Beyond the reach of the law's prying eyes.
But every gift has a price to be paid,
And their debt to the devil was yet to be weighed.
every gift comes with a hidden price,
A debt to the devil, cold as ice.
In time, they'd pay the piper's fee,
With a cost they'd never foresee.
