Alone

Again, she was alone, needing someone now. She couldn't take anymore of her wrecked life
She didn't know who else to turn to.
She needed a game plan on how to handle the situation and deal with her men
But she wasn't really sure what to do. Joe was pissed, Lindsey was over her.
Lindsey was obviously the man that she was in love with, could she make him an offer that he couldn't say no to? But then where did that leave Joe? She could give him visitation of the baby, right?
She knew she could work this out but Lindsey didn't want drama? She didn't really understand. He'd never said that before. That was the only reason he's really given her. Was there something he wasn't telling her?
Her mind started to race and come up with irrational thoughts, was Kristen pregnant? We they getting married? Did he fall in love with her?
She knew it had to be one of those and it drove her crazy not knowing.
A knock sounded at the door and Joe entered quietly, a bouquet of flowers in his hand.
She looked up at him warily.
"Hey," he greeted awkwardly, extending the flowers to her, "I got you these."
She took them slowly, with her head held low.
"Please forgive me," he kneeled beside her bed and placed his hand on her knee, rubbing it gently
She shied away from his touch
"Baby, please."
She was trying to distance herself from him so he wouldn't be completely heartbroken when she let him down.
"Stephanie," he pled, rubbing her stomach.
"Please Joe, don't do this..don't make this any harder than it has to be."
"Don't make what harder?" He swallowed uneasily, "are you leaving me?" He was heartbroken
She bit her lip and avoided his eyes. "I can't help it Joe...I love him."
"Please don't stay that," Joe finally cried, softly sobbing, "I want my baby."
"I won't keep you away from your baby, never. But I just can't be with you Joe it wouldn't be fair to either one of us."
"Why not? I love you and I love this baby, we could be happy."
She shook her head sadly. "Joe, you're not listening to me! I don't love you!"
"You'll regret this," Joe said calmly, standing up and leaving
She was very bothered by what that meant but there wasn't much else she could do. She couldn't change her feelings
She laid in her room, truly alone now. No one to hold her and comfort her
She finally fell asleep from exhaustion.
She woke to a knock at the door
"Who's there?"
A young blond opened the door, Stevie immediately recognized her, "Why the fuck are you here? Fucking my husband wasn't enough?" Stevie yelled
The young girl cringed but shut the door behind her. "I think we need to talk."
"I have NOTHING to say to you," Stevie gritted, despising this woman.
Kristen sighed heavily. "Stevie please, this is important."
"Is Lindsey alright?"
"Lindsey is...fine. Yes Lindsey is alright."
"Then why are you here??"
"I came to see you," she stated nervously, obviously intimidated by Stevie
"Bull crap. You don't give a damn for me."
"We're going to be seeing a lot more of each other from now on and I wanted to not be on a war path every time we have to be near each other."
Stevie scoffed, "Sorry."
"Just hear me out," Kristen pled
"You got five minutes."
"I am sorry that things turned out like they did for you, believe it or not. I cannot help the fact that I am in love with Lindsey, I always have been. He didn't hurt you intentionally, he loves his family and that's why he broke it off with me when your daughter was born," she paused, waiting to hear Stevie's reaction before she continued
There was no reaction only a silent hateful glare
"...can you let us be happy?" Kristen asked softly
Stevie's jaw dropped and she almost went off on her then she actually thought, what if Lindsey really loved her?
"Your kids are precious to him, and I respect you as their mother," She continued
"But I am deeply in love with him and I know that he loves me to some extent."
"He doesn't love you, he only loves what you give him."
"You haven't witnessed him around me so I doubt that's a tire accusation."
"True. But I know MY Lindsey, he invented the word deceit. He's only telling you what you want to hear."
"I didn't come here to fight, I am merely to ask you to leave him out of anything other than the father of your children."
She could feel her pulse quicken and her blood ran hot. "Get. Out."
"I didn't mean to upset you, I'm sorry," Kristen held out her hand to touch Stevie
and Stevie jerked out of her reach quickly. "Don't fucking touch me!"
"Stevie, please calm down. Lindsey told me about the baby," Kristen begged
She closed her eyes in frustration. "Kristen, stay out of what you don't know shit about."
"I know that's why you're here, and I know that's why Lindsey is moping around the house," Kristen answered softly
"Let me ask you something, do you think if I wasn't pregnant that Lindsey would still be with you?"
"He served you divorce papers before he knew you were pregnant," Kristen answered casually
"But do you know where he stayed that very night? Did he mention he confessed his undying love for me? That we kissed? All this even after I had told him."
"I know all about that," Kristen confirmed
Stevie was speechless for a moment, then she looked up at Kristen and with a deadly seriousness in her voice she spoke, "I'm not ever signing those damned papers."
"Stevie, I know you want to fight for this. Please don't, I'm begging you," Kristen's voice trembled
"This is what you get when you sleep around with a married man sweetheart, you better believe I'm going to fight for him."
"I guess I'll have to break the new to him early then," Kristen shrugged, walking toward the door
Stevie froze. "W-hat news?"
"Goodbye, Stevie," Kristen ignored her question, turning the door knob
"Damnit Kristen! Don't you dare leave this room until you answer me!"
Ignoring Stevie again, she walked out of the room, closing the door behind her
Stevie just sat there in shock. She was pregnant. She knew it. She knew that had to be it. She picked up the phone and dialed Lindsey's cell right away. He picked up on the fourth ring. "What is it Stevie?" He asked almost sounding annoyed. "Lindsey! You have to come to the hospital right now!"
"Is it the baby?!" He was clearly worried
"Yes, yes! The baby is fine-I need to talk to you right now!"
"Steph, you remember what you said," he sighed
"I know what I said but Lindsey this is really important it can't wait another second!"
"I'll be there when I can," Lindsey replied, hanging up
She prayed to God that he would leave before Kristen got back home.
He around somewhere between a hour to two hours later, not that Stevie was keeping track of time.
She had almost drawn blood from biting her lip in anxiety by the time he walked in.
"what is it?"
"Lindsey, I need you to promise me something?"
"And what would that be?"
"Promise me love. Please. Promise me you you haven't really given up on us."
"Steves, I do love you. I can promise you that. I mean things with you and Joe and Kristen and I would be so much more fucked up if we got back together. You're pregnant with his child for fucks sake."
"And she's pregnant with yours."
"What?" He was dumbfounded
"That's funny, Stevie," he said coldly.
"No. It's not. It's true."
"Stevie she can't get pregnant!" He exploded
"Bull. She came by here just to talk trash earlier, I told her I wasn't going to ever sign off on a divorce then she said she just had to break 'the news' to you early!"
"Do you want the doctor records?!" He asked, throwing up his hands
"Yeah I do! Lindsey what else could she have meant??"
"I don't know but it wasn't that," Lindsey gritted
"How are you so sure?"
"Because I was with her when she lost the first baby, she hemorrhaged so badly that they preform a hysterectomy."
Stevie was silent.
"Happy now?"
"I'm sorry."
"Doesn't matter now," Lindsey shrugged
"Yes. It does. I was wrong."
"Yea," he sighed
She took a deep breath. "So this is really what you want?"
"Yeah, Steph-I'm just tired," Lindsey scratched his head
She nodded sadly, a couple of stray tears rolled down her face. "Alright then. I'll sign them."
"We'll worry about that when you get some."
She shook her head, "No. If this is what's going to make you happy-I want to do it as soon as possible."
"I don't have them on me," Lindsey told her
She nodded, secretly loathing him for that being his only reason for her not signing them
"Is that all?" Lindsey asked
She nodded.
He quietly walked toward her and kissed her forehead, "Take care angel."
She wanted to scream. How could he be so cold then so loving? But she said nothing
"I'll have the kids back later, call me on your way home."
She simply nodded
"Bye."
He paused outside of the door, "Where's Joe?"
She shrugged. "Gone."
"Gone where?"
She sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I don't know Lindsey... He came back eventually, trying to apologize then he got mad when I told him that I couldn't love him and he told me I'd regret it and he left. I'm pretty sure we're done."
"Do you not get tired of pushing people away?" He asked
She didn't answer him.
"I have to go." He shook his head
She watched him walk out, immediately bursting into tears as soon as the door had closed.
Crying was all she seemed to do lately, at less she didn't have to hide the tears this time.
But suddenly the door opened, "Steves, I'm sorry I left my-" she quickly looked up away from him and wiped the tears away fast.
"Please don't cry," he begged
She rubbed her back soothingly and sighed. Lindsey was the last person she wanted to see right now.
"I-I'm not." She tried to collect herself but her voice betrayed her
"Seriously?" He asked not amused with her cover
She stared down at her hands. "So what if I do? You don't care, and that's alright. Just go."
"I do care, Stephanie. Because I'm leaving doesn't mean I don't care," Lindsey said
She covered her face with her hands and he could hear a faint mumble, "It sure feels like it"
Lindsey sighed and sat down beside her, "I do love you, Stevie."
"You don't have to tell me that to make me feel better..just go, I'll be fine."
"Stephanie look at me," grasping her chin
Her breath hitched in her throat at just how close they were, and the impaling blue of his eyes put her in a trance for a moment she wished could've lasted forever.
He stroked her cheeks with his thumbs and kissed her gently on the lips, "I'm so confused right now and I'm sorry."
She grabbed onto to one of his wrists tightly and bit her lip. "I can't keep going through these roller coasters Lindsey...I need to know if you're going to stay or if you're going to go.."
He scrunched his face and broke out into a cry, "I don't know!"
She held him close to her. "It shouldn't be this hard Lindsey..we were so happy once...I'd give anything to turn back time.."
"We could do it for the kids?"
"What are you saying..?"
"We could try again for the kids," He said, "I've realized that it's not easier this way."
She could feel the huge grin spread across her face and she hugged him tightly. "Oh my gosh! Lindsey thank you! Thank you so much! I promise you everything is going to be alright from here on out I promise!"
"We still have some things to work out, Steph. It's going to happen, just not right now."
Her smile faltered a little but remained nevertheless. "I can live with that, I love you so much, thank you for giving us another chance."
"I love you too," Lindsey kissed her cheek
She held one of his hands and laced it with hers. "Where are the kids?"
He hesitated greatly, "With Kristen."
He felt her tense up, sure he was in for it. But she only sighed she took a minute to collect herself to make sure she wouldn't flip out and then she spoke, "Can you bring them to see me?"
"Of course. They miss you," Lindsey told her
She smiled sadly at him.
"I'll go get them."
"Thank you"
"I'll be right back with our monsters," Lindsey smiled
"Come back soon"
"I will," he smiled
He reluctantly left to retrieve the kids.
Almost two hours later Lindsey returned, Will following him in as Lee was sleeping in his arms
"Oh my sweet boy! Come give me a hug!"
"Are you hurt again?" He asked, extremely concerned while trying to cautiously her up on the bed
"No baby I just got a little dizzy I'm fine now." He finally got on. "So you're okay?"
"I am okay." She stated brightly. He gave her a serious look, "Promise?"
"Promise."
"I do have some news when your sister wakes up," She tapped his nose
"What is it?!" He asked excitedly
"You have to wait until Lee wakes," she told him softly
"Awwwwwww, come on!"
"No sir, it just wouldn't be fair."
"Aww"
"I've missed you," Stevie smiled, pushing his hair out of his face, "Come sit beside me."
He snuggled up beside her.
"What have you been up to?"
She asked
"I met one of daddy's friends today"
"You did?" Stevie tried to sound excited
"Yeah! She was really nice and she let us watch tv for a LONG time!"
"Really? That sounds fun!" She gulped uneasily
"Yeah it was!" The little boys face soon turned serious though. "Except well...I missed you a lot."
"I missed you too, baby, but I'm glad you had fun," Stevie smiled, kissing his cheek
Lindsey, with Lee still in his arms sat at the foot of the bed.
"Pass me my girl, Linds," Stevie held out her arms
He did so carefully and gently.
Stevie cradled her little girl tightly to her. "I missed my babies," she kissed Lee's head
Lee began to stir
"Hello, sweet girl."
"Mommy?....mommy!" She quickly lunged a death grip hug onto her mother.
"Oh I missed you so much!" Stevie squeezed her tightly
"I missed you too mommy!!! A lots and a lots!"
"I have something to tell you," Stevie looked between Lee and Will
"What is it mama?"
"I'm having a baby! You're going to be a big brother and sister!"
Their faces lit up!
"Really?!" Will smiled
"yep!"
"Is it the same baby?" Lee asked curiously
Stevie wasn't really sure how to respond to that
"No Lee, this is a brand new one!" Lindsey said with fake happiness
Stevie smiled at him appreciatively trying not to let on to any troubles in front of the kids
"Cool," she smiled softly, staring at her mother's stomach
Stevie giggled
"Can I see?" She asked
"No baby, they aren't ready to come out yet, but you can feel them," Lindsey said

She immediately placed both her tiny hands upon her belly.
"Feel the little bump right there?" Stevie moved Lee's hand over it
"They're so small mommy!"
"I know baby! They'll get bigger soon!" Stevie smiled
Lee's eyes were wide with excitement
"Mommy is having an ultrasound soon so we can see them," Stevie announced
"Oh cool!"
"Why doesn't Daddy go check on that really quick?" Stevie looked at Lindsey
He nodded, "Of course, I'll be right back, you two be good."
"Okay," Will said quietly
Stevie noticed Will had lost his enthusiasm when Lindsey left. "Will? What are you thinking about sweetie?"
"Nothing," he shook his head, shrugging
"William?"
"Yes?"
"What's wrong?"
"Daddy will leave again and the baby will go away," he said
Stevie's heart broke. "No! No baby! That is not going to happen! Ever again! You don't need to worry about that!" She shook her head
Will began to cry, "I want Daddy!"
"He'll be right back, Will calm down buddy." She tried to soothe him
He was soon inconsolably, sobbing loudly, "Daddy!"
"Sweetheart!" She pulled him close to her tightly
"I want daddy," he started to hiccup
She rubbed his back soothingly. "Baby he'll be-" luckily he walked in at that moment.
"What's going on?!" Lindsey asked as he rushed toward his son, scooping him up quickly.
The little boy wrapped his arms around his fathers neck quickly. "Daddy!" Lindsey held his son, confused. "He missed you the second you walked out.
"What happened?" Lindsey mouthed silently to Stevie
She mouthed "Later." Back to him.
Lindsey gave her a strange look and kissed Will's head, "I'm here bud, tell me what wrong," he wiped his tears
"I just missed you!"
"Missed me? You've seen me for the last few days?" Lindsey replied softly
"I just missed you." Will repeated not really wanting to admit what he feared to his father.
"Okay, okay," Lindsey replied, deciding on speaking to him after talking to Stevie. "Anyway, the doctor will be here any minute to let us see the baby!"
Stevie beamed. "Aren't you guys excited??"
"I am!" Lee smiled, throwing up her hands
Just then the nurse came in.
"Ready?" The nurse, Debbie, smiled at Stevie
She nodded eagerly
"We'll get you set up in a minute, and if everything looks good now then we will send you home!"
Stevie grinned just waiting to see her baby
The nurse moved closer to Stevie's bed and made sure her IV was still working properly, checking her vital signs before the doctor got in there.

Which he did only moments later
"She's all yours!" Debbie smiled at Dr. Lopez, whisking past him to her other patients. "Good afternoon, Mrs. Nicks!"
"Hello"
"Are we ready to see this baby?" He shook Lindsey's hand
Lindsey nodded somewhat hesitantly
"Good! And who do we have here?" He kneeled to Will and Lee's level
"These are my kids, William and LeeLee."
Stevie said proudly
"Beautiful children!" He smiled, pulling the ultrasound machine closer to the bed, "Would you please raise your gown for me?"
She did so.
"Thank you," he smiled, pulling out the gel and placing it just below her belly button, "Alright, let's see," he turned on the machine and placed the transducer over the gel, spreading it around
She winced as he ran it just lightly over her incision. He apologized and then continued.
"There we go!" Dr. Lopez beamed, pointing to the peanut shape on the screen
Stevie grinned so wide she thought she'd never be able to smile ever again.
"When can they come out?" Lee asked
The doctor chuckled lightly. "Not so long but it might take awhile...they've got a ways to go."
"Oh, is it a boy or girl?" She questioned
Stevie turned her attention to the doctor wondering if there was any way to know yet
"Sorry, sweetheart, you'll have to wait a little longer on that one too," he smiled sadly
She pouted for a moment
"Soon," he added
She just shook her head and sassily walked over to stare out the window. The adults laughed and the doctor continued on.
"Let's check out this heartbeat and send Mama home if she feels up to it."
"Definitely. I am definitely ready to go home."
"Then let's get this over with," he smiled, flipping a switch as the heartbeat filled the room, "Sounds perfect."
Stevie was once again in tears, at least this time they were happy tears. Lindsey was silent.
She knew he felt awkward about this whole thing, but she wouldn't let him leave her. He had to stay.
