"Have you told him of the outcast?"
"The what?"
"More like the who"
Patton turned to his newly formed group of friends, consisting of boys named Roman, Remus (who were twins), Logan and De. He was curious to who this 'outcast' was and why they seemed so serious about it. He knew what an outcast was, his old school had a small group of them but they were all goths, so he assumed an 'outcast' in school terms were simply the students who didn't play by the norms, which wasn't bad, but Patton wondered why his new friends made it seem bad.
"There is only one"De explained, lifting his head from Remus' shoulder after the boy laid down and rolled onto his stomach, picking at the ground to find a worm. "His name is Virgil" De continued, "and if I were you, I'd stay away with him by all means"
Patton drew his eyebrows together, "what? Why?"
"He is dangerous" Logan responded, slapping Roman's hand away that gently laid across his thigh. Roman did pout but hugged the nerd from behind to make up for it, a smile raising on his lips again once Logan embraced the physical contact. Roman was a very affectionate and physical lover, which was great as Logan didn't indulge in emotions much.
"There have been numerous tall tales about him" Deceit mused, tilting his head back. "Hm, let me think...he killed someone" that made Remus giggle and sit up, dirt particles covering the apples of his cheeks. "I heard he abuses animals for fun!" For such a horrid statement the boy seemed very gleeful to say, but Patton knew why, he also knew Remus wouldn't dare hurt anything innocent.
"His parents are terrified of him!" Roman piped up, Logan sighed and nudged up his glasses. "While I don't partake in rumours as such...I have heard from countless sources he is somewhat insane"
And that was the first Patton learnt of Virgil, but he didn't believe a word. Such a sweet guy like him, that wasn't really much of a surprise. He hadn't met Virgil yet, prejudging him from rumours that he was sure his new friends didn't even entirely believe would be extremely unfair, he supposed everyone else did so - and he wasn't about to do the same.
The first time he saw Virgil was two days later, already he was settling in to his new life. New home, new friends, new school - it was going much better than originally planned, one thing was for sure, his life had improved immeasurably compared to the last city he lived in hours away.
He didn't walk up to the boy and greet him, he wore a glare with headphones to match, Patton knew talking to him would only annoy him and push him away, which was the last thing the new student wanted. He wholeheartedly wanted to become close to Virgil, after only two days he's heard so many rumours about this one boy, personally Patton knew he'd be crying everyday if someone were to say such vulgar things about him, he couldn't imagine what it must be like.
"I feel terrible" he lamented to Deceit in art class, the third day in, gazing at Virgil who sat across the room on a table seated for four, with only him there.
Deceit hummed, slowly pulling himself out of his drawing phase, following Patton eyes over to the darkly dressed boy pinned with piercings and covered with makeup. "I can see where your concern is coming from, Patton" he spoke quite gently, "I can't say I've seen him have a friend.." with a little smirk he watched sorrow wash through Patton's eyes, the boy with scars on his face knew what he was doing - knew exactly what. He couldn't say he agreed with most the rumours, being an expert liar himself he could differentiate tattle-tales from honest concerns, but that didn't mean he would try and befriend the outcast.
From everything he's been through it's made him quite the unlikable character, Deceit has only seen the school side of things - but he was as sure as his hat was black he had troubles at home. He sympathised with him, of course he did, but after a few failed attempts of becoming close Deceit decided he wasn't the one for the job of saving Virgil, bringing him back and potentially stopping him from doing anything stupid. But...he could see it in Patton, as clear as the sky was blue he wanted to help, and Deceit would encourage that even if his friends would disagree. They didn't need to know, did they?
What did a small white lie ever do?
"Patton? Are you listening?"
"Huh-wha-? Yeah uh- George Washington discovered gravity..." he drifted, eyes trailing back across the library. Logan let out a long sigh and covered his face with his hands, helping Patton out with homework was never a problem, in fact Logan thrived in it, teaching was his specialty and he knew expressing knowledge onto others only strengthens the memory in his mind, tutoring their new friend has benefits for both sides - not, however, when he's distracted for the entire time.
"I think that is enough today, Newton is..." Logan flipped through cards he had tucked away in a side pocket of his bag, "...rolling in his grave" he nodded satisfactorily, finally curious enough to see what on Earth Patton was gazing at. Turning his head ninety degrees, he wasn't surprised to spot Virgil sitting in the corner of the room, with a book tucked on his lap, reading off his phone wedged in the pages, bulky headphones resting on his head - as per usual.
"I wouldn't get myself involved with him" Logan advised, putting away his books. Patton frowned, now they were talking about Virgil he could actually listen. "Why not? You said you don't like rumours"
Logan sighed, he did say that and will still stand by that. But this situation was different. "If Virgil was normal, why would these rumours arise?" Logan displayed his logic on the table, "something ought to have happened in the past, certainly not to the extent of rumours now, but something that is none of our business, the most-" Logan paused again, skilfully flicking through the pile of cards, seemingly a habit he indulges in day-to-day.
"...beef he has with certain students are the ones most commonly known as the 'populars'. Students who are known by many, are usually rich and quite rude by nature. I have theorised this in the past, very briefly mind you, the best answer I came up with is the 'popular' students are creating many of these rumours to tear Virgil down (for whatever reason), and to make him an outcast" Logan took one more glance over at the boy dressed in black, then slowly turned back to a somber Patton.
"I suppose, if it true, it certainly worked"
Roman looked up at Patton with a risen eyebrow, Monday of the second week Patton had been in his new school. Slowly Roman lowered his arms, crossing them over his chest. "Whatever do you mean?" He responded after Patton asked about the outcast, "What do I know about him? Well...nothing much other than he's a creepy cookie!" Roman then threw his arms around again, crossing the stage over to the table where he left his water bottle - practicing out scenes took a lot of energy.
"Actually..." Roman stopped Patton from asking him more, the freckle-covered boy stared up at him hopefully. "He did work as a 'behind the scenes' guy a few years ago, quit because of the bullying" an expression of remorse crossed Roman's face as he lowered his bottle back onto the table. "He was wonderful at what he did, building props like no other! And the decorating! All of these" Roman gestured to the beautiful props set up for the performance coming up in a few weeks, "were made by his hand! It.." Roman frowned, "it is upsetting, but I tried to bring him back, I apologised for acting cold, I even bought him a box of chocolate! He didn't appreciate me trying, or even talking to him"
Roman turned to Patton fully, the two wearing the same expression. Quite obviously the two felt the same way, sincerely bad for everything Virgil had gone through and continues to go through to this day. Roman truly believes they lost a valuable member to the team that works countless hours for these performances to be perfect, Virgil had spent so much time, effort, yet he was rewarded with insults, cold shoulders and glares.
"I should have been better, I didn't talk to him much...after talking with De I realised how stupid some of these rumours really are. But I can't talk to him, not me, someone else must do it, someone..." Roman eyed Patton, then smiled.
"Someone kind"
Wednesday afternoon Remus swung down from a branch in a tree he was told countless times he wasn't allowed to climb, it didn't stop him though. He hung upside down, gazing at Patton with a wicked grin.
"He's a murderer!"
Patton sighed at Remus' gleeful response, not at all expecting anything less. "You believe that?" Patton frowned, squeezing the strap of his bag. Remus frowned for a moment, then grinned again.
"Yep! Because it's true! He murdered his twin in the womb!" While talking he swung up and grabbed the branch, Patton seemed shock at the revelation of information - nothing like he had heard before implied Remus either made this up or garnered knowledge from a closer contact.
"How do you know...?" Patton prompted and the response shocked him.
"We used to be friends!" Remus swung back down again. "Until the rumours started and he distanced himself..." Remus only ever frowned for a few moments, he never allowed 'bad' emotions to last for long, while he certainly misses Virgil he wouldn't let it bother him. If Virgil doesn't want to be his friend why should he be so upset about it?
"But he told me he absorbed his twin, in other words he's a murderer!" Giggling sharply, Patton smiled and gestured for Remus to get down, which the excitable ball of energy did with a dramatically reluctant sigh.
"Can you tell me more?" Patton asked softly, he understood Remus had a hard time concentrating on one topic of conversation for long, especially if he wasn't stimulating his mind with another activity at the same time, which is why he began swinging from the branches again, but this time upright and using only his hands.
"We weren't friends for long! I didn't like his parents, they were shit!"
A giggle exploded from Remus, "shit!" He continued, throwing his head back. "Drowning your enemies in a massive pit of shit!" Although disgusted, Patton wouldn't try and get anything more out the boy who obviously wouldn't keep track on conversation anyway. Patton wouldn't force that. Instead he listened and talked about whatever Remus wanted, while making sure he stayed safe in the tree, ready to catch him if he ever fell.
The next Monday rolled around pretty quickly, at that point Patton had Virgil's schedule tracked down. He wasn't trying to be creepy, he merely wanted to know when the best time would be to approach him to talk while they both had a few hours to kill. Sometimes he'd end up following Virgil from a distance, noting down the secluded areas he spends most of his free time, away from anyone, everyone, especially the 'populars' who Patton noticed he avoided like the plague.
Patton wasn't too surprised at that, the 'populars' weren't at all nice and Patton could tell rumours were given life in that group of friends. If they could even be counted as friends, so much backstabbing Patton hoped they all at least had someone real to talk to.
Patton had also written out countless notes of what he would try to say to Virgil when he got the confidence, ranging from simple 'hellos' to 'did you actually kill your pet cat?'
For some reason he felt neither really fit, being nice seemed the way to go but after discovering that was the same tactic the other's used he couldn't see it moving forward very well. But on the other hand, he couldn't delve straight into the rumours, for that would make it appear Patton only wanted to know about the rumours, and not the truth, not Virgil. And he did! He's wanted to know since day one!
That young, enticing boy caught Patton's eye and he be damned if he would give him up-!
"What do you want?"
The student let out a squeak, spinning around fast to come face to face with Virgil. They were at one of the less-populated areas of the school, ground floor towards the spare classrooms rarely used for their poor heating and general uncomfortable smell. Yet, even if Virgil could get away with many things right now, Patton wasn't scared one bit. Not believing any of those rumours made him see Virgil as normal, like any other student, he felt the same as he would with anyone else, safe with no reason to worry.
"Wh-huh?"
"You keep fucking following me, knock it off" Virgil clarified with a growl underlying his tone, ready to stalk off in his heavy black boots but Patton realised this was his chance. He had to say something-anything!
"I like your earrings!"
Silence.
Ah, yes, a great way to start things off!
Virgil looked over his shoulder, then scoffed. "No, I mean it" Patton hurried to stand before him, blocking his path to his most favoured resting spots. "They're pretty" he smiled a shy smile, not wanting to seem too eager yet at the same time needed to appear genuine.
"Right, one word of advise new kid, stay the fuck away from me"
"But I want to be your friend" Patton countered without missing a beat. Virgil glowered at the student, but it didn't really last for Patton wasn't scared. Usually one look could send people straying away from him, not so much the populars but...who gave this new kid so much confidence? What dare was he asked to take? How much money was he getting from this to make him stand up to Virgil, the apparent murderer and animal abuser?
"I don't want to be yours" at this point it wasn't entirely Virgil's fault his behaviour was so cruel. His trust was torn to shreds, leaving behind a crumpled mess of should I believe you?
What would Patton gain from such a thing as a friendship with him, the outcast? Virgil could think of a few negative side effects, namely one; he'd get bullied much like he is, and Virgil didn't want that to happen. He took the abuse by himself, without letting anyone else get hurt. Surely Patton knew he wasn't favoured, right? All evidence pointed to the idea that Patton wasn't being genuine, doing this as a prank possibly, but his face, his eyes, that small uncertain yet shy smile...why did Virgil want to believe him? What compelled him to wonder is he different?
"Just leave me alone" Virgil huffed, blocking himself off again, keeping those walls strong and sturdy. Patton let him go, standing in the hallway alone a smile rose on his face.
This was a start. A great start.
Later in the week Patton was having a difficult time focusing in class, although he could easily ask Logan for help he wasn't having issues because the work was hard, he was having issues because of the conversation happening right beside him. This class specifically were filled with tables large enough to hold five students each, Patton surrounded by his friends, the table beside him filled with the populars.
Unfortunately across the room, secluded on a table by himself was Virgil who was told countless times to remove his headphones by the teacher - so much so he took them away until the end of class. Patton felt for the boy who looked like he'd rather jump into a volcano then carry on listening to the very loud, very clear conversation the teacher apparently couldn't hear, so focused on his computer.
Patton hated it.
"Tick, tick, tick..." Deceit whispered, Remus looked at his boyfriend instantly with piqued curiosity, anything to get out of doing work. Deceit just sent him a smirk and carried on.
"He's wearing so much to hide the marks his victims leave behind"
Patton's hands clenched as the table blew up in a roar of laughter.
"Tick, tick, tick..."
"Seriously, how is he allowed in public?"
Patton's mouth twisted and his eyes narrowed, finding it impossible fo concentrate, so he instead focused on himself, desperately taking in long, deep breaths. It wasn't working.
"Tick, tick, tick..."
"Someone should check his bag, bet he's carrying a knife"
"Will you stop!?"
Silence...
Deceit perked his head up, much like the other students who were curious to see who yelled so suddenly, even the teacher turned his head. "Boom.." Deceit whispered, stretching back in his seat to watch.
"What'd you say, new kid?"
Patton huffed, "I said will you stop" he repeated, icy venom dripping from each word. He wasn't close to Virgil, not at all, not yet anyway - but that didn't stop him from feeling immeasurably frustrated. No one, not one person was sticking up for Virgil who didn't deserve this, any of this. He couldn't help but feel guilty he was a bystander too, his heart constricted to the point where he couldn't stay silent much longer, whether or not Virgil appreciated it.
"No one cares" Patton continued, after glancing around his table and seeing Deceit nod. "It's so-so...childish! If Virgil has actually done anything that's said about him he wouldn't be here! He'd be in prison! Why are you lying so much!? It isn't right! Please just leave him alone" he begged, the whole classroom stared at him, including Virgil who shielded his surprise and shock...no ones ever stuck up for him before, he didn't know how to feel about it.
"Patton, that's enough" the teacher called out, now standing up but Patton wasn't finished. "No! Why do I have to be the one to tell them off!? You're the teacher! And you let them be mean-"
"Patton, I said that's enough"
Patton opened and closed his mouth, spluttering on air, on words he couldn't form into sentences. What could he do? He couldn't think, not with the populars all cackling at the fact he was told off and they were in the clear. "I think we need to step outside and have chat" the teacher then gestured to the doorway, Patton's jaw slacked in horror, the injustice of the situation made his blood boil and stomach curl, lapping up his anger like water on a hot day. He doesn't feel it often, he tries to stick with the nice, fun, bubbly emotions - but today was different, he knew this would last.
"That is hardly fair" Logan rose up from his seat, "it would be impossible to not have heard what they were saying, you activity ignoring them is going against your duty as a teacher to protect students. It is, quite frankly, disgusting. I stand by Patton, it is wrong he had to be the adult instead of you"
The teachers mouth curled into an angry snare, he crossed over to the table and leaned on it to glare threateningly at the two boys. "You're landing yourself in a lot of trouble" he warned, before either could pipe up Roman rose too, sending his own glare back, much worse.
"Why? Because they're defending poor Virgil? You're letting him be outright insulted without repercussion! What kind of a person are you? To let that happen?"
"I couldn't imagine" Deceit stood up, leaning on the desk, "what it would be like to lose your job over this...oh wait, I can, and I sincerely hope it doesn't happen to you" the snarl on his face proved he didn't mean a word, and would do everything in his power to fire the teacher. With all the students standing up, going against him he was getting flustered, red in the face, and more angry. Just as they were.
Finally, Remus rose from his chair.
"Butts!"
...it was a valid attempt.
But that was how the five students found themselves in detention after school, the principle believed the teacher over the boys, especially as many students in the class either sided with the populars because they didn't want to be on their bad side, or sided with them because they just didn't like Virgil. Everything was against them and Patton was upset. He moved himself to the corner of the room, curled up on a chair, wondering what he could do to try and stop this, stop all of it. He knew it would be a lot to carry on his shoulders but he didn't want his friends to get into any more trouble.
"Pst.."
Patton sniffled and wiped at his eyes, he didn't meant to get so emotional but arguments and yelling make him cry, especially if he's the one arguing.
"Pssst!"
Patton gently lifted his head, glancing behind his back at his friends who all agreed to leave him alone much to his request. Where was that noise coming from...?
Looking towards the doorway, his eyes widening in shock when he saw Virgil peeking in, gesturing for him to come out. Making sure his friends were distracted in their conversation, Patton hurried over and out the room. Detentions were held in the unused classrooms so the hallway was empty, allowing them some peace.
Virgil shuffled awkwardly, hands fidgeting where they rested in his pockets. "Why did you do that?" He eventually asked, bangs resting over his dark brown eyes. Patton crosse his arms, closing in on himself. "Because it's unfair...I let my anger go..I-I guess it wasn't the best thing to do but I-I wanted-it-you...they wouldn't stop and-"
"I get it" Virgil cut him off, understanding he needed a moment to breathe, think of what to say. "But you shouldn't get involved, now they're gonna be on your ass, for what? Just don't talk to them, they'll drop you after a few days, alright? Just-"
"Getting bullied everyday is worth it if it means protecting you"
Virgil's breath hitched in his throat at the revelation, staring at Patton in shock. Scanning his eyes, face, posture, Virgil knew he meant every word, and that struck his heart like a knife slicing through his skin. He was frozen for a few seconds, completely unaware of what to do, think even! Why did this boy want to help him so much? Virgil meant nothing to him, to anyone! He was...nothing! Useless, pointless, worthless! What did Patton see that he didn't? What did Patton see that no one saw?
"I promise, Virge"
Nickname. A nice nickname. Why did he like it so much?
Patton stepped closer, "I promise I'll help you" he then smiled, "I meant it, y'know? I want to be your friend" that gentle smile tugged at Virgil's heartstrings, the hope flaring in his chest clawed at his insides, desperately wanting to give in, to side with Patton, believe every word and become his friends, letting him be protected from harsh words and forceful shoves.
But he couldn't...
"Just-I..." Virgil shut his eyes for a moment, Patton frowned as he watched his face twist, turn back to the famous scowl and cold eyes. "When I said leave me alone, I meant it. Don't try and be the hero, don't talk to the populars, and don't talk to me" he spat, turning on his heel and leaving the hallway fast, he couldn't bare to stare at the stricken look across Patton's face much longer - but he needed to do this, needed to push him away.
He'll hurt you.
The sly whisper filled his ears and curled in his brain, flooding his system, gushing around the flames of hope until all that was left was a string of smoke.
He'll hurt you...
"Oh, Patton dear!" Roman called that Friday across the stage. Patton poked his head out from behind the red curtain, grinning at the man dressed in his costume for the play. They were still practicing but as it was a very stressful situation Patton decided to give up his breaks to help out in anyway he could, which included running halfway across the school to the lower floors to find the props that had somehow gone for walks.
"Would you get the fake archway for us? Pretty please?" He batted his eyelashes and Patton laughed, agreeing quickly. Brushing past a few other performers, he jumped down from stage and hurried to the doors, before he left he turned his head to see Roman with his arms curled around his boyfriend, pressing kisses across his face as Logan tried to bat him away. Laughing softly at the cute scene (Patton was a sucker for PDA) he turned and carried on his quest, not at all bothered by the long distance he would have to travel, and the flights of stairs.
Previously he found most the props needed in the room furthest down the hallway, somewhat recalling seeing a grey archway on his last travel he entered that same room and over to the back, behind the desks littered haphazardly across the room, mostly a place for storage more than anything else.
The room was darker than he remembered, but shrugged it off and shuffled past the tall props for other plays until he found the painted grey stone of the archway he was looking for. It twisted his heart, the artwork reminding him of Virgil - since the incident in class they hadn't spoken, Patton had seen him those few times but nothing more than that. He promised himself he'd try talk to him next week but he was anxious - how could he go by this without pushing him away even further?
Bending down to grab it, a sudden noise startled him, freezing every muscle in his body. Oh no...oh no...this was bad, real bad.
"Hm, fuck..."
Startled, alarmed, disgusted and horrified all in one Patton stood bolt upright and did his best to stay silent as he crossed the room over towards the door. He almost got away, almost, but the universe wasn't so kind, was it?
Rushing over he wasn't paying much attention to anything, solely focused on making as little noise as possible, but he accidentally let out a yelp when crashing straight into someone's face. No one could blame him, the sudden person out of nowhere scared him half to death, especially while something else was going on in the same room!
"Who's there?" A voice called, Patton gasped and looked at who he ran into, of course it was Virgil! This was his most favoured lonely spot.
"Patton-!" Virgil stumbled in shock when Patton grabbed his arm and dragged him out the room, further down the hallway where the lights flickered and dimmed considerably. Seconds before whoever was in the room could see them Patton ducked into a small storage closet, closing the door silently, Virgil behind him, staring at him if he were mad - justifiable as he had no idea what Patton had experienced moments before he arrived.
"What the fuck?" Virgil finally asked Patton who slumped on the door, relieved they weren't caught.
"Sorry, Virge, I...there was something, I think.." Patton took a moment to catch his breath, then turned to face the boy he dragged. "I went in there to get a prop for the play! But someone was...y'know... doing it" he whispered so quietly Virgil had to strain to hear, it only took him a second to realise what he meant, face twisting up in disgust once he did.
"Shit, really? Fuck, can't they wait?" He huffed in clear annoyance, looking down at his boots before finally taking in the room. It was mostly old books and supplies, covered with dust, the epitome of forgotten.
"Thanks, I guess" Virgil sighed, hating he was stuck again with Patton, but he supposed it was better than anyone else. "No problem!" Patton managed a small smile, awkwardly fiddling with his hands. What now?
"How're you doing?" Patton finally managed, unable to stop himself if he wanted to - the concern he felt for this boy day in day out was unbearable.
Virgil sighed again, "I'm fine" he replied with shortly, and not very friendly. Patton knew that was a lie but didn't want to push.
"Have they...said anything to you?" Virgil finally asked after a few minutes silence, it was becoming worse and worse to stand quietly, besides it's been eating at his mind since the day Patton stuck up for him.
"Oh, no, not really...they sometimes laugh if I walk by, but nothing I haven't dealt with" he laughed softly, trying to brush it off but Virgil's curiosity was caught like a fish on a hook.
"What do you mean?"
Now it was Patton's turn to go quiet, swallowing thickly. He hasn't talked about his past experiences with anyone here, he saw a somewhat irony in admitting a secret to a boy who hadn't told him a bit about himself. But he supposed he shouldn't try and brush it off now, that would only cause a deeper split between them. Be honest and open, if Patton wants it from him he'd have to give it in return - it was only fair.
"My-um.." he chuckled awkwardly, "my old school wasn't great" he murmured, reaching up to fiddle with the sleeves of his cardigan he wrapped around his shoulders that morning. "People there didn't like me much because I'm.." Patton wobbled his lip between his teeth, he had told his new friends this but no one else. He regretted coming out to an entire school last time, like Hell he'd have the courage to do it again.
"I'm pan-pansexual" he tried to lighten the mood with a soft chuckle, but it was as humourless as a comedian joking about aeroplane food.
"Oh.." Virgil whispered, Patton nodded and bobbed on his feet. "Yeah..uh" he then rested his hand on the door handle, realising this situation was only getting worse and Virgil probably didn't want to be in here for much longer. "I bet they're gone now, I-"
Virgil stepped forward and Patton stopped, looking over his shoulder at Virgil who looked extremely awkward, reaching his hand up to chew at his nails. "You...trust me enough to tell me what?"
Patton's hand slipped from the door handle to turn around completely, smiling softly. "Of course, why wouldn't I?" Virgil shrugged and stuffed his hands into his pockets, he could think of plenty of reasons why, namely they barely knew each other and someone's sexuality can be a pretty big fucking secret, especially if they've experienced problems with it in the past.
"Um.." now Virgil felt bad, he couldn't help but feel extremely cautious, but he supposed it was eased a bit, every time he talks to the sweet student he feels himself loosening up bit by bit. He knows he's hard work, but he also believes he isn't worth it, while that's the complete opposite in Patton's eyes. In return Virgil could admit something too..? But what? What if Patton lied and is just admitting something big so he'd feel inclined to do the same which Patton will use against him-
"I'm gay too" he murmured, all the while sinking into his jacket, somewhat wishing he could vanish and never return.
But the way Patton lit up was worth it. "Aw Virge, thanks for telling me...I promise I won't tell anyone! Scouts honour!" He giggled and virgil rolled his eyes, shrugging his jacket closer to him. "Did you even go to scouts?" That made Patton laugh again, so contagious Virgil couldn't help but smile just that slight bit.
"Did you?" He returned and Virgil sighed, "fuck that"
"Language Virge" Patton cooed, then gasped at a sudden thought. "Oh! You're free now, right?"
Oh god where was this going-
"Yeah...?"He trailed off, leaning back cautiously. Patton grinned wide, "you can help out with the play! Some paint had chipped and stained on a few props and only you can fix it! Please?"
"Oh, god, Patton-"
"Please, please, pleeeaaase?"
Virgil sighed and shook his head, taking a few steps back. This is what he gets for giving an inch, Patton takes a mile. "Patton, this is a one off situation! Anyway I told you to stop fucking talking to me" he retaliated with that harsh core to his tone, instead of looking upset or offended...Patton rose an eyebrow and grinned?
"You think I'll fall for that act after this? I'm not dense, Virge"
He scoffed, but mostly to hide his surprise. Usually that works- it always works! Push them away! Avoid possible pain, protect yourself and ignore everyone else...Why was Patton so adamant about changing that?
"I never said you were! You're too trusting for your own good. What if those rumours are true? What if I bring out a knife and kill you now?"
Patton's eyebrows drew together, "you think I think so low of you to believe that?"
There it was again, a simple fucking sentence that makes Virgil's insides go crazy. The flame of hope sparked, sparked and caught...a pitiful thing but it was there and he could feel it burn. From his stomach all the way to his chest, and he didn't think it would go out any time soon.
"I wanna be your friend, Virgil. I wanna be that person you can go to for comfort or if you feel lonely..." he drifted, noticing the hesitance gleaming in his eyes. Patton took a slight step forward. "Think about it Virge, what would I gain from hurting you? I'm doing this because I don't want you to hurt anymore, or at least help you in times when you do..." Patton smiled again, soft, caring, Virgil didn't know what to say and knew he couldn't talk even if he did.
It was hard to comprehend anyone would feel this way towards him, sue him for being worried.
"You don't have to answer right now...instead we can meet in the art department, in an empty classroom, to fix up the props, yeah?" He suggested and Virgil felt his heart soothe, glad Patton could understand he wasn't in the right state to respond. But his insides began to churn away again at the prospect of Patton understanding him, knowing what to do when he was upset, giving him space when he needed it or being close when he wanted comfort...how he's longed for this sort of person in his life yet he's pushing him away. Like with everyone else.
"Yeah...I'll meet you there" Virgil whispered and Patton smiled, reaching out and squeezing his hand gently. "Get there safely"
Turning around, he slowly opened the door, looked both ways and hurried down the hallway to get away from the couple who were still busy in the quiet classroom. Virgil waited in the storage room for a few minutes, covering half of his face while sitting at the ground, thinking, debating...if Patton was genuine holy shit why!? Why him!? Patton was friends with Roman, Deceit, Remus, Logan- what did he bring to Patton's life? It was too far-fetched to believe...yet he still found himself in that art room, and found he had the best moment of his life in fucking years.
It was a little awkward to start, but once Patton began to joke around, and make messes with paints, the two eased, more and more until it was so comfortable they were like life long friends - what did Virgil do when he got home that day? Cried. Cried and cried. From being overwhelmed, scared, anxious, but most of all...joyous.
Tears of joy soaked his pillow that night instead of tears of agony.
"Wow!" Roman breathed upon entering the prop room the next day, dropping off his bag and taking a closer look. "They're beautiful again!" He gushed, Patton who was already there placed down a fake sword and giggled, leaving his check book on the desk (which was used to keep check of all the props).
"Aren't they? Virgil's an incredible artist!"
Roman nodded hurriedly, "you don't have to tell me twice!" Then realisation dawned on him, "you got Virgil to do this?"
Patton nodded, "yeah! We hung out yesterday while he painted..." he smiled a little shyly and Roman grinned, "well, it seems our little Patton is leaving the nest! If I don't hear stories of you two spending time together I'll be furious!" He exclaimed and Patton laughed, nudging his shoulder into him playfully. "Oh hush Ro...I do wanna be his friend though" he murmured and Roman wrapped an arm around his shoulders.
"I couldn't think of a better friend for Virgil" Roman spoke back just as quietly and Patton's heart warmed, cheeks bursting in colour. "Thanks Ro!"
"No problem, padre"
Unbeknownst to them across the room hidden behind shelves of props was Virgil, silent as he listened to the conversation. Nothing malicious, nothing giving away 'hidden evil intentions'... Patton genuinely wants to be his friend. The best part was how casually they spoke about him, like he was any other student and not him.
Patton and Roman left the room after that to meet with their friends, giving Virgil the chance to escape and head to class, hiding his smile behind his sleeve. Usually when he showed even a little bit of happiness it was purposely shut down.
But he didn't think this happiness would go for awhile.
Later that day, although Virgil hated the cafeteria he was fucking starved and forgot his water bottle at home! Starved and dehydrated! Even if inside he felt like he deserved to suffer his growling stomach and dry throat bitch slapped those depressive thoughts to the side in favour of ice cold water and a slice of pizza. Virgil could drool.
Keeping his gaze low, he grabbed the bottle and pizza while waiting in the (thankfully) short queue, smiling awkwardly at the person behind the counter who smiled back in that mandatory way. Virgil wasn't bothered, he wouldn't be able to urge on a real smile in this particular job. Especially with some of these rude ass entitled students.
Handing over the money, he collected the change, turned and hurried across the room towards the exit. He had what he needed now all he needed to do was leave and-
"Oh god whats he doing here!?"
"Who even let him in here? He's fucking disgusting"
No, no, no, no-!
"Virgil!"
A simple, sweet, protecting voice sliced through each and every slithering insult. Eyes turned in the direction of the student adorned in soft pastel clothing, leaving all his stuff behind at the table in favour of rushing across the room over to his friend who stood awkwardly between tables of populars and general bullies.
"Wanna sit with us? We were about to leave to go outside! You can eat with us if you want" he suggested with a cute smile, he didn't hear what was said to him beforehand, merely knew he may not have been receiving such kind words before he arrived. And he did really want Virge to be there with them outside, the nagging feeling within urged him to go to Virgil whenever he could. There wasn't a moment Patton didn't want to be with him.
"Oi, leave him alone!"
Patton turned in surprise when he noticed a few students glaring at Virgil who tensed up further, "stop bothering him" they continued, obviously unaware that Patton was the one who started conversation.
"You stop bothering him!" Patton clapped back instantly, "he's my friend and I invited him out-"
"He's not your friend!" A popular girl cut him off quick, "he's obviously manipulated you!"
Horror washed over Patton's face at such a horrible insinuation, finally finding it in himself to glare at the people who find such pleasure in ruining Virgil's life. He opened his mouth to speak but the two tables beat him to it, all overlapping each other, rumor, insult, rumor, insult- Patton quickly realised they wanted to do everything in their power to separate them, but they only made Patton stand closer with his friend.
"What do you want me to do?" Patton whispered, everything becoming a background of jumbled mess, instead they focused on each other. "To go, stop talking to me and-"
Patton squeezed his hand, "what do you want me to do?" He repeated and in that moment Virgil knew he wasn't giving up, no matter what. His heart clenched.
"Take me away..."
And quick the two boys ran out the room and through the school, the voices of the bullies becoming faded in the distance they made, flying down the staircases and rushing down hallways until they reached the unused rooms hidden from life.
Now they both sat at a table, Virgil awkwardly eating while Patton fiddled with his sleeves, he trusted his friends wouldn't leave his stuff behind in the cafeteria. "They're mean.." Patton murmured amidst the silence, Virgil looked up, stuffing the last of the crust into his mouth and taking a gulp of water. "Yeah, I know" he responded, rolling his eyes at the thought of them, scowling snd sipping more from his bottle. "They're the worst" Patton concluded, crossing his arms over his chest and glaring at the ground.
Virgil rose his eyebrow and snorted, screwing the cap onto the top. "Sorry to say Pat but...you look as menacing as a butterfly"
Patton looked up at Virgil with a gentle expression, a smile widening even if he was sorta insulted. "What...?" Virgil drifted, giving him a cautious look, he merely grinned and shuffled in his seat.
"You gave me a nickname"
Break ended before Virgil could have hung out with Patton and his friends outside, but would he want to? He's just gotten used to Patton's presence, he'd need time to get close to the others. That is-if they even wanted to get close to him. Plus, facing Remus again...he didn't know if he could do it, he wouldn't be surprised if Remus didn't want him to do it. They were once very close, Virgil adored their friendship, but he pushed him away so he wouldn't get involved - he was already bullied for his problems, Virgil didn't want to add to that.
Of course Remus could take anyone on, with his brother they were an unstoppable force, which is why Remus' bullies drifted and moved onto an easier target...Virgil. He couldn't fight, whenever he retaliated it was snarky enough to earn a punch. He learnt his lesson; just let it happen. He wished he could get some help but he couldn't exactly rant to anyone, not even his family who simply didn't care.
Virgil went home that day very with a jumble of confusing emotions. On the one hand he wanted to get close to Patton knowing deep down it'll improve his life but on the other hand he wanted to stay away, stay alone, because change was bad and in the end he'll only be hurt when Patton realises he isn't worth his time.
Laying on his bed he sighed, resting his arm over his eyes. Maybe he should make an effort; whether or not Patton was genuine matters less and less to Virgil compared to a short ounce of happiness in his repeated sadness.
That concludes it; he'd try. He hated being depressed and lonely...one friend for a short amount of time would do wonders he was sure.
The next day in school he entered his first lesson a little late, sue him he accidentally slept through a few alarms after staying up late to watch Netflix...yeah, karma sucked. His eyes brushed over everyone else to land on that flash of pastel blue, a colour that suited the student so well. He also noticed red, yellow, green, and darker blue...the table was filled with his friends. But, like he self-promised, he'd try, right?
Shifting his bag he swallowed thickly and steadily walked past his usual desk far away from others, students watched while talking as he headed to the empty seat besides Patton and sat down without even asking if it was free. He instantly noticed and felt panic spike up in him until-
"Virgil!" The bubbly student gasped, turning to him with the widest, sweetest fucking smile. "Aw! I was wondering where you were" he giggled and Virgil's heart swelled, he noticed he wasn't here?
"Are you okay?" He started conversation, normal fucking conversation, even if the entire classroom was staring.
"Yeah-uh" he coughed, lowering his bag to the ground. "Good-can I sit here?" He asked quickly knowing his anxious thoughts wouldn't be appeased until reassurance.
"Of course!" Roman chirped brightly in response, surprising the darkly dressed student who didn't think anyone else would walk to him. "The more the merrier" he smiled, beside him his boyfriend Logan nodded in agreement.
"It is nice to see you again, Virgil" Deceit commented, and his boyfriend Remus nodded wildly. "Friends again?" He asked, tilting his head to the side. Virgil clenched his bag strap tight, oh god...they were so quick to accept him back, he was never apart of their group, never a member...he was simply friends with Remus and shared one or two conversations with the others. Why was this so easy? This shouldn't be so easy! They should be staring at him weirdly like everyone else, moving away from him or asking him to fuck off! This isn't-this isn't normal, this is... wrong.
"I-uh- well-" his throat dried and Patton reached over to squeeze his hand. "Guys, don't overwhelm him" that- that only overwhelmed him more! Simply because Patton understood he was uncomfortable, made the effort to make sure he would be okay! Fuck, he didn't realise sitting here would make him fucking cry!
"I can't believe you guys"
Virgil ducked his head instantly, recognising that voice. The entire table turned to the table beside them, glaring at the populars who were all glaring too but at one student in particular.
"You're really letting him sit with you? That's sick" another commented and it totally wasn't a coincidence the teacher was focusing on his work right now. "Do you not realise what he's done?" A girl rose her eyebrow.
"We realise they are all lies" Logan retorted. She laughed, "lies!? How would you know?"
"How do you know they're true?" Deceit countered, smirking. "Listen" he carried on, "as much as we adore listening to your opinions we would all love if you left us alone? Thank you, sweetie" he winked and turned back forward, Remus cackled and wriggled in his seat excitedly.
A popular boy snorted, "that fucking weirdo is almost as bad as Virgil"
Instantaneously Roman slammed his hands on the table and stood up, flinging his chair backwards with the sudden force. That along with his murderous gleam in his darkened eyes made the boy flinch back in fear, especially when Virgil joined in - lifting his head as soon as the insult was uttered to stare menacingly at the bastard.
"I wouldn't" Deceit spoke up, turning in his seat while reaching over to hold Remus' hand. Quite honestly he couldn't care about insults, but he adored when his loved ones stood up for him. "Otherwise when the papers are filled with your 'mysterious death' the murderous-related rumours can spread to all of us, not just Virgil"
"You'd kill him for one fucking sentence!?" One exclaimed, Deceit smirked.
"I'd kill for any of my family, darling" he cooed. "Even Virgil" saying this he looked over at the boy who stared back in soft surprise, a small, tiny smile finding it's way onto his face.
"Alright, pipe it down!" The teacher called, "otherwise I'll spread you out across the class" he threatened and the two tables quietened down, but sat in rigid anger whenever they heard the group talk to Virgil in a friendly way.
"I'm proud of you" Patton whispered, their conversation private amongst the other conversations happening across the class. Virgil looked up at him from his work, silently prompting him to continue. Patton smiled. "It takes a lot of bravery to sit with a group of people you don't really know... but I'm really, really happy you did" Virgil felt his shoulders ease, managing a slight smile in Patton's direction.
"Eh, who could pass up sitting next to you?"
The simple compliment made Patton beam ear to ear, cheeks twinging with a blush. Did Virgil cause that? Does he...want to do it again? Hm..
"Aw, Virge!" He looked down at the table shyly, "I wouldn't pass up sitting next to you either! Oh-but only if you're comfortable" he backtracked and Virgil's heart clenched, he still can't believe Patton knows so much...what he's comfortable with, what he's not, etc. While on the outside he looked pretty neutral his insides were burning crazily with the fire of hope that turned from a simple flame to a wild, uncontrollable blaze.
No matter what Virgil wouldn't regret trying for the world.
"Come on, do you really think this shit will last?" One hissed in his ear at the end of lesson, Virgil glanced at him, watching him smirk and leave the classroom with his friends. Did he think it'll last? Not really, but that was his self-depreciation talking. He had no idea if it would last, he simply hoped it would.
And unlike his doubts and harsh comments from the populars, it did last. Quick Roman was asking- begging Virgil to join in on the theatre behind the stage business, promising if anyone were to give him hassle he'd sort them out as quick as he could, no matter who it was. In the beginning he was a little hesitant but after Patton encouraged him to do so (and after he saw how bad the props had gotten) he decided yes, he would help, and their newest performance was never better.
Virgil moved around behind the curtain with such skill no other had, knew the exact timing for each que and could set up a new scene in a minute flat. Patton was allowed backstage during the performances and watched Virgil in awe between watching the stage from the sidelines - he couldn't believe anyone would want to rid of Virgil, he was incredible at what he did! Without making a single fault! The thought made him sad; how much has Virgil truly gone through?
In that moment Patton made it his duty to make sure he'd never go through anything similar ever again.
While everyone else was hesitant, they couldn't say Virgil didn't to a great job, a few even complimented his work after which he did not expect - he nodded his head in acknowledgment and that was that.
"Aw, Virgil! You were incredible" Patton complimented once the show was over, "uh?" Roman huffed, hair stuck to his forehead from sweat. "What about me?" He whined and Patton giggled, giving him a quick hug. "You were great too, Ro!" Satisfied the actor went off to find his boyfriend while Patton turned back to Virgil who managed a half smile.
"Eh, it was okay..."
"Okay!? No, no, wonderful!" Patton corrected and Virgil huffed out fondly. "Thanks, Pat"
The boy beamed.
Upon getting closer with the group, Remus was quick to fall back into their usual dynamic - he did miss his emo friend after all. Virgil was a little surprised but would never complain, sitting beside his old 'trash-can' friend, making stupid jokes and listening to his rambles that overlapped one another impossibly was a dream come true - and it seemed Virgil was one of the few who could decipher what Remus was on about.
He also bonded with Logan after the two had somehow fallen into a conversation about their favourite books - while their taste was quite different they were both up for trying each other's out. Honestly Logan was happy he found someone who reads. Plus, they'd often fall into space-related conversations, mostly aliens, as it interested them both to no end.
While he didn't talk so much with Deceit, their conversations were always something he valued. They never really talked about anything specific, but simply listening to Deceit talk about whatever came to mind was fascinating - it especially came in handy when Virgil was having a rough, panicked day and needed someone but at the same time wasn't entirely up for talking with them. Somehow, every time, they would all know - and would do their part to make Virgil calmer, and hopefully improve his day.
He couldn't be more grateful for them.
And Patton? Well...he was closer to him than all the others, and he quickly realised why.
"Oh, fuck" he whispered, Logan looked up from where he studied, the two were occupying the library while the others were in class.
"Whats wrong?"
Virgil sighed and cowered into his jacket, "I like Patton..."
That burnt into his chest, sizzling at his heart, scorching hot. How would he deal with this!? No one, especially someone as perfect as Patton, would like him back! It was impossible! Went against nature! He couldn't stand his reflection, imagine what his friends have to go through everyday! Yes, they do compliment his appearance often but what if they don't mean it!? Aargh! He couldn't stand his thoughts.
By the end of the week everyone knew of Virgil's feelings, he ended up asking advice from a few and it just...spread, nothing purposefully spiteful, he didn't really mind, as long as Patton didn't know who he - thankfully - did not.
That Friday he sat in the art room, painting a decoration when the door suddenly burst open. "If you do not admit your feelings to Patton right this instant I will lose my mind!" Roman declared, scaring Virgil from his revere.
"Christ, Ro!"
"I'm sorry, Virgil" he apologised, laying himself across the table. "But I mean it! Watching you pin after our adorable puffball is excruciating!" He then suddenly say up in excitement, "I have it!" He clapped his hands excitedly, "why don't you ask him to homecoming!?" Virgil paled.
"What? No! That's-that's next week! He probably already has a date!"
"What?" Roman scrunched up his face, "no he doesn't! We love our precious poof, we would only let him be with the best of the best!"
Virgil's eyes softened, "you think...of me as that?" Roman nodded hurriedly, "of course! Do you see the way he lights up around you!? It's impossible not to notice! He practically adores you, Vee! And out of every possible contender in this school..." Roman smiled at him sincerely, "you're the only one we'd all say yes to"
Of course Virgil was honoured, they obviously were protective over their angel of a boy, he couldn't believe he fit their standard as they wouldn't let Patton be with just anyone...but still, would Patton want to go with him? He felt very awkward about the whole thing, but he agreed with himself if Patton didn't have a date by Thursday he'd ask, as homecoming was on Friday. Roman relented to this after awhile, only because it was the route Virgil was most comfortable with.
However, things went downhill on Monday when rumours spread...this time it wasn't a lie.
"They all know! How!?" Virgil cried out, holding his face in his hands. It was their first break but as soon as Virgil entered school he could hear everyone gossiping about the fact he had a crush. Most of the conversations were limited to, 'whoever it is will never like him back! I mean, it's him!' Yeah, it stung. And didn't exactly help his confidence.
"We didn't tell anyone-" Logan tried, Virgil groaned. "I know! I-I...trust you guys" he admitted, chewing his lip. "Someone must've overheard...god, what if Patton knows!? Shit what if he hates me!? Fuck! Fuck-!"
Deceit rested his hand on Virgil's forearm, "breathe" he instructed and Virgil cut himself off, Logan sat at his other side and repeated his breathing technique Virgil had taught them after they encouraged him to do so (as they wanted to know exactly what to do to help him, yes that made him tear up but he hid it very well). While doing so Deceit tapped the number of seconds as he breathed in, held, and let go which helped too.
"I can assure you our dear padre would never hate you" Roman countered his worries, "yeah! He only hates people who murder dogs" Remus piped up and Roman sent him a look.
"Shit, he's coming, everyone shut up" Virgil demanded and they changed subject pretty quickly, Logan returning to his seat beside Roman leaving the only space left beside Virgil.
"Hey guys!" Patton sat down with a smile, subtly handing Virgil a piece of paper under the table. While they all spoke Virgil unfolded it and read;
Are you okay? I heard the new rumours, is it true?
Virgil winced.
"Yeah" he murmured, giving the paper to Patton dejectedly. "Oh...who is it?" Patton whispered and Virgil tensed, he didn't know... oh! That was a massive spike of relief.
"Just...someone, I guess" he responded and Patton frowned, nodding in understanding. Much to Virgil's worry Patton seemed off for the rest of the day, whenever asked he'd smile and brush it off but everyone knew he was lying. Virgil couldn't help but feel like it was his fault.
Patton's behaviour didn't change much through the week, Virgil could barely pay attention to the rumour with Patton front and centre in his mind. He really couldn't understand why he was upset; and the others certainly didn't know either. He didn't let it go but stopped asking for now...in exchange for a different question.
"Hey, Pat?" He caught the student that Thursday afternoon, the two about to leave for home. "Yeah, Virge?" He smiled a small smile that didn't reach his eyes, Virgil hated it.
"Uh-...do you-um...have a uh-date thing for homecoming?" He mentally slapped himself, way to go idiot!
Patton shook his head, "no, I...haven't been asked" he admitted, staring at the ground.
"Oh! We could-uh go together!"
Patton slowly looked up, his smile widening. "Really?"
Yeah, y'know, as friends...obviously" he added, furrowing his eyebrows when his smile dropped again. "Oh, yeah, friends" he cleared his throat, "I'd love to go with you, Virge! Meet me tomorrow outside?"
"Yeah, sounds good" Patton send him a smile that wasn't entirely real before he left, leaving Virgil to wonder what he did to make Patton so upset...
That Friday evening Virgil found his best formal wear (that wasn't really formal) and met up with his friends outside the hall, waiting for Patton who showed up a little late but his entire outfit made up for it - instead of a suit he wore a beautiful blue dress that flared around his waist but not too much, with cute butterfly clips in his ear and a light layer of makeup on his face.
Virgil's jaw physically dropped, staying behind as his friends rushed up to gush over how beautiful he looked! Virgil wished he could do the same, wished he could shower him with compliments but he didn't want to make him feel awkward.
Finally splitting from his friends Patton walked up to Virgil who closed his mouth and stuffed his hands into his pockets, "you look great, Virge" he smiled, a little more warm than before in the week.
"So-so do you! Really you look...incredible"
Patton blushed and giggled, "you're so sweet, come on, let's go in"
Did Virgil want to hold his hand? Yes, desperately so, instead he clenched his hands in his pockets and followed beside his gorgeous friend who attracted attention instantly - thankfully no one made any rude comments, Virgil knew if they did he wouldn't hesitate to put them in their place. With the help of Remus and Roman of course.
And the night went smoothly, the group of friends danced (well, Virgil watched, way too shy to join in, but none forced him to) and generally had a great time. A few times Virgil had to leave to catch a breath and every single time Patton would join to make sure he was okay - truly Virgil would see why he fell for him.
Homecoming king and queen, however, was when the night spiralled.
Up on stage was a popular student (of course) and as they spoke the mandatory speech, he slowly parted from it when his eyes landed on Virgil who tensed.
"And I think I can see Virgil in the distance" he grinned wickedly, around him his friends tensed, putting down their cups of juice on the table beside them, all instinctively ready to fight which Virgil was grateful for. "I'm surprised he was let in" a murmur of chuckles rang throughout the crowd, Virgil ducked his head, currently wondering why on Earth he even came to this stupid party.
"I'm even more surprised he had a date! Patton, right? It's almost sweet- that is his crush after all-"
Virgil took in a surprised breath, not daring to stare at Patton with his widened eyes.
"But...it must've been out of pity, right Patton? Come on, who would go on a date with that disgusting thing?"
Remus let out a low primitive growl before taking a dash across the dance floor, jumping up on stage and rolling up his sleeves to start swinging punches at the boy who cried out and fell to the floor. Quickly Roman and Deceit followed, Roman to help while Deceit pried them both away with words, warning them which was quick to calm them down.
While the whole room burst into laughter Virgil sprinted out the room, flushed red from humiliation, tears welled up in his eyes. Patton went after him while Logan rushed up to Roman, on the way the two glaring at everyone they passed.
"Virgil, Virge wait! Please I can't run in heels!" Patton begged, following after Virgil in the school, watching as he slowed to a stop beside the lockers, sliding to the ground and covering his face.
Kneeling by his side Patton rested his hand on his shoulder. "Virge, I'm so, so sorry...I can't believe he'd say that! He's horrid and I hate him" he stated strongly, Virgil sniffled and looked up at his friend who felt his heart twist with fury when seeing the tears slipping down his cheeks. "You're not disgusting! He's wrong!" Patton carried on, feeling his own eyes well up too. "And-and..." he took in a breath, "I'd go on a date with you" he admitted a little quieter, the two felt butterflies explode in their stomach.
"Wh...what?" He whispered and Patton smiled shakily.
"It's why I've been upset, Virge, because I thought you had a crush on someone else...I have-I like you, Virge...I have for awhile" he explained and Virgil didn't know how to respond; cry more? Run away in disbelief? Hug him?...cry more?
"I...I didn't-I didn't think-" he stuttered and Patton shifted closer. "I'd like you back?"
He nodded meekly. Patton sniffled and chuckled.
"Why wouldn't I? You caught my attention the moment I first learnt about you and I'm glad you did...you're amazing, Virge! I don't care what anyone says because they're all wrong! I get to know the real you, which makes me luckier than all of them combined! Knowing you, being close with you is..." he brushed his nose with his hands, "it feels like an honour, Virge, and I'll treasure you forever" he whispered and Virgil decided how to respond; cry more.
Patton joined in and the two hugged, still sitting on the floor, but now pressed against each other, crying happily into their shoulders.
"I like you" Patton whispered, Virgil managed a shaky smile between sobs.
"I-I like you too"
"Can we...can we- y'know-" Patton blushed and Virgil chuckled, leaning back to stare into his glossy eyes.
"Go out? On a date?" Patton nodded, holding both of Virgil's hands. "And...be boyfriends?"
Virgil nodded too, Patton grinned widely and pressed their foreheads together. "Oh, Virge, I'm so happy..."
Virgil closed his eyes for a few moments, basking in it all...wondering how his life seemingly changed in a flick of a switch all because of a new student.
"I'm...I'm happy too, thank you for bringing me happiness"
And for the rest of their lives the two cherished each other every moment they could.
