Chapter 16
"Hey" said Kaiden as I opened the front door.
"Hi" I replied stepping out and closing the door.
"You ready?" He asked.
I nodded and looked around.
"Is that a new car?" I said walking towards a silver car standing in the driveway.
"Not exactly, my dad gave it to me when I moved here" he replied as I moved towards his car.
"Of course. Why didn't you bring it to school?" I said checking out the car. It was really cool, kind of like the cars in Carter's house.
"I was waiting for the right moment to bring it out"
I looked towards him and raised an eyebrow.
"Is this the right moment? Are you trying to impress me?"
"Maybe" he said smirking and went forward to sit in the drivers seat.
I opened the passenger side door and sat in the seat. It was beautiful on the inside. Kaiden started the car and reversed out of the driveway.
"You didn't really had to come get me" I said as he speeded up.
"I wanted to" he replied shortly.
Silence descend on us for a little while. I looked out the window and saw the world passing by, doing their own business. As a child I had always found it fascinating to watch.
"Im sorry for not letting you in that night" I said turning towards him.
"Its fine, really" He said.
"So how's the project coming on with Carter?"
"Urghh I don't know, its far from being complete because he just doesn't do anything and I can't do all of it on my own, there's so many other things I have to do too" I huffed.
"Why don't you change your partner?"
"I already asked Miss Jean but she just wouldn't AGREE"
Kaiden remained silent for a moment staring straight ahead.
"I wish I could be your partner, this Carter isn't a right guy you need to stay away from him as much as possible"
"Would you two stop saying that to me?" I said a little frustrated from hearing the same damn thing again and again.
"What? Did he say something to you?" Asked Kaiden looking at me.
"Yea, exactly the same thing you said"
"Of course" mumbled Kaiden looking back on the road.
"What do you mean? What is it with you two anyway? Do you two know each other? had a fight?" I asked curiously.
"No, we don't, just pure instinct" replied Kaiden.
Before I could say something else, Kaiden stopped the car. I looked around and saw that we were in a parking lot.
"We're here" He said opening the car door.
We were the first one to arrive, there weren't many people at the bowling alley. As I stared at the big round balls I remembered I don't know how to how to do this, I have never really liked bowling much.
"I don't know how to bowl" I confessed to Kaiden as he checked out the balls.
He stopped and looked at me.
"What? Why didn't you tell me about it when I suggested we come here" he asked half smiling.
"I don't know" I replied laughing.
He picked up a red ball and walked towards me.
"Come I'll teach you how" he said.
We walked to one of the lanes at the end of which were the pins standing, the same red colour as the ball.
"Okay" said Kaiden standing behind me.
He asked me to hold the ball and as I held it I realised how heavy it was. My arm moved down as Kaiden laughed at me.
"Stop laughing" I snapped as I used my othet hand to help bring the ball up.
Kaiden placed his hand above mine on the ball, his other hand on the upper side of my other arm.
"Lean down a little" he said softly, his mouth close to my ear.
Our bodies were more closed than normal, than I liked. I did what he said as his hand shifted from my arm to my waist. Using his hand that was clasped in mine he moved the ball further back and then brought it forward, sliding it down on the lane. I watched as the ball rolled down the lane and hit the pins, all of them falling down. Kiden was still standing close to me.
"Good shot" came a voice from behind us and we turned around to look Caroline, Carter, Haley and the rest of their friends standing behind us. My eyes shifted to Carter. He was standing with clenched fists and dark eyes which were shifting between me and Kaiden. I suddenly felt uncomfortable and stepped a little away from Kaiden.
"Want something?" Asked Kaiden his eyes going from Drake to Carter and resting on Caroline.
"Not yet" replied Caroline and walked pass us to the other end of the room. The rest followed her behind. Carter stood in his spot, still looking at me and then swiftly walked passed us, his hands in the front pocket of his jeans.
What the hell are they doing here? I told Carter yesterday I was going bowling, so probably he came here on purpose. But why? Maybe he wanted to see me. Before I could ponder more in my thoughts I heard the distant fimiliar noise of my friends coming. I looked up and saw them coming towards us.
"Sorry we're late, Ally took a lot of time in getting ready" said Nina as they reached us.
"I did not" protested Ally.
We started playing soon after that. Kaiden seperated us into two teams. I tried my best to play good, making my throws as much like Kaiden as I could but its not that easy doing it alone. For most of my hits the ball would just go sideways and for one and two lucky moments it was only able to hit three pins, not more than that. To be more specific I literally sucked at bowling.
Kaiden's team won because of how amazing he was, he didn't miss any pin it looked so easy when he did it. The rest were kind of like me. But it was fun. Everyone seemed happy, telling jokes and laughing. All my friends seem to really like Kaiden and when I look deep into it its not really hard to like someone like Kaiden, he was just so easy going and nice.
I did look out for Carter once but they soon disappeared. I need to stop thinking about Carter, I really need to stop. I feel like this is getting out of hands, all through out the day my mind keeps going back to him. Where was he? What was he doing. Carter was an addiction, I understood that now.
We took a little break from playing everyone was sitting on chairs talking. As I listened to Claud telling about a movie he saw in the television today I realised I was thirsty.
"I'm going to get a drink" I said standing up.
I walked out of the hall and out in the cafeteria of the bowling alley, it was huge with many different food items to pick at. I walked to the counter seeing all the drink options.
"What would you like to have" said a boy a little elder than me with freckles.
"I'd like to have mango juice" I said.
He nodded and went to get one for me from the fridge, I took out my money from the pocket and handed it to him. Sipping the juice from the straw I turned around and was yelped. Cater was standing right behind me.
"What the hell Carter" I said glaring at him, I could have dropped my juice.
He ignored me and walked past me to the counter,
"I'd like a packet of chips" he said to the same freckled guy.
"You came here on purpose didn't you?" I said. "You knew I was coming here so you showed up too"
Carter took hold of his chips and handed the guy money.
"Why would I follow you Eva? I'm not in love with you." He replied walking past me. He didn't really have to say that.
"Then why are you here?" I aksed walking behind him.
He stopped in his track and turned to face me.
"Drake felt like coming to bowling and everyone agreed to it, not everything I do is about you" he said lowering his head towards me.
The more I talked to him the more angry he made me. I wish I could say something as arrogant as he does but I never come up with something good.
"I want you to go to Miss Jean with me and ask her to find us new partners" I said suddenly, crossing my arms.
"What?" He said looking at me confused.
"I don't want to be your partner okay? You don't do any work"
"If you could recall I asked you yesterday that we could spend today on the project but you didn't want to cause you had to go bowling with your lovely Kaiden" He said angrily.
"He's not my lovely Kaiden" I replied.
"Then what is he? Huh? Who is he to you?" Asked Carter taking a step forward.
"None of your business" I stuttered trying desperately to hold my ground and not step back. I don't want to show his that he intimedated me in any way.
"No you need to tell me who is he to you. Are you too dating?" He asked coming closer.
"N..No" I replied looking at his eyes.
"Then tell me Eva who is he?" Said Carter his hands came up and held on my upper arms.
"Tell me"
My skin tingled from where he touched me. Like fire that didn't really burnt.
"He...He's my mother's fiance's son" I said quickly.
Carter gawked at me after hearing my words, I could see how surprised he was from his eye. His hands slowly dropped back to his side.
"You...your mother is marrying Henry Smith?" He whispered.
"Yes! How do you know him?" I asked looking at him.
"Who doesn't know Henry Smith" he said closing his eyes and rubbing them.
"Is that why you don't like Kaiden? Cause he's a rich man's son just like you"
Carter opened his eyes and looked at me.
"Money doesn't matter to me Eva" he said. "Shit your mom is marrying Henry, Kaiden's dad"
"What's such a big deal about it?" I asked not getting Carter's reaction. So what, if Kaiden's Henry's son?
"Nothing. Nothing" said Carter taking a deep breath.
"Okay listen who your going back home with?" He asked looking at me.
"Kaiden"
"No you'r not"
"What? Why?" I asked looking at him bewildered.
"Cause I'm dropping you off, your going with me"
"No, I'm not" I said.
"Yes, you are" He replied sternly.
"Carter who do you think you are? Ordering me around like this?" I said angerily.
"Okay...okay, Eva Evans will you please give me the honour to take you home today. How's that?"
"Carter are you crazy-"
"Why are you so stubborn Eva? Just agree to it, we'll talk about the project okay? You wanted to finish it, lets do it then" he said frustrated.
I didn't know what has gotten into him. Why he was reacting so paranoid all of a sudden. I sighed and glared at him.
"Okay, fine" I snapped and walked away. He didn't say anything else.
I told myself that I was going with him to end the discussion, so he could stop bothering me. I am not going with him because I want to.
I told Kaiden that me and Ally were staying behind because Ally liked the cafeteria guy and wanted to stalk him.
"Really? The cafeteria guy?" He said looking at me.
I nodded looking at him.
"Ally's kind of weird" I replied.
"Are you sure you can come back alone? Its already dark maybe I should stay here with you" He said concern on his face.
"No no, I'll be fine I promise. You go back home"
He looked at me and then sighed.
"Okay" he said.
I watched as he walked away, I am really starting to like Kaiden. He seem genuine and nice and cares about me. I turned around and saw Ally glaring at me.
"The cafeteria guy? Really?"
"Sorry didn't have time to come up with something better" I replied trying to look apologetic.
"Why didn't you tell him that you were going with Carter?" She asked.
"Because he doesn't like and trust Carter, he wouldn't have left. I don't get it Ally why do these two dislike each other so much?"
"Cause there kinda the same, rich kids of rich parents, they don't want to see someone getting ahead of them" she replied.
Was it really this? They didn't like each other because they threaten each others status. Was Carter afraid of Kaiden taking his place in school?
"Oh here he comes, call me when you get home and tell me if the ride was just about the project" said Ally winking at me.
I heard footsteps behind me as Ally left the other way. Turning around I saw Carter standing.
"Ready?"
