Now, all the planning and editing is thrown out of the window if no one reads what you have written. To gain readers, there are three things in Wattpad that gain their attention. The cover, the title and the description. The cover gets its own chapter later and the title isn't worth a chapter, so the description it is.

For the love of everything chocolate, nobody reads if the description is just "I can't write descriptions, read to find out. :)" If you can't do that, I doubt you can't write an actual story.

Now, a kind of Descriptions popular on Wattpad are quotes from the Fanfiction itself. These are a big hit or miss. It is better to write a normal description and add a quote at the end.

Quotes on their own may wake an interest, but they may as well just confuse. Most people won't read to stop that confusion, they will pass the story because there is no interest. Unless chapter and title are that good.

You see, I started to post on Fanfiction.net and AO3 as well. Both sites have a short character limit for their descriptions. And it works.

Try to keep it short. Depending on how important the setting is, write two to three sentences about the setting. A sentence or two about the main characters, state their goals.

But just don't ask questions. Not only is it simply overdone, the questions are useless if the reader isn't interested in answers.

That space the questions wasted could be used by a snippet about the main character that causes interest in the reader.

Apropos over used, don't start with "X is a 15 year old girl, who... Y is a 16 year old boy, whose...", these descriptions are bland and often surprisingly not very telling.

Not to mention, if you use a description like everybody else, what indicates that your story isn't like everybody else's as well?

In short, keep it short. Maybe describe only the first few chapters. The rest? Well, your first chapters need to hook the readers in for the full story. The description needs to hook them for the first few chapters.
