"Hey, random question, but if cities were actually just humans, what eye color would San Francisco have?" She was scrolling through pictures that she took on her camera of our little road trip. We decided to go to as many cities as we could—giving each city three days to shine.
"Orange. Definitely orange with a swirl of blue somewhere, or specks of a foggy white." I answered. I pointed to the picture of the Golden Gate Bridge and how the Pacific Ocean's blue water reflects and illuminates against the foggy sky.
"What about Seattle?"
"Deep blue with highlights of purple streaks."
"New York?"
"A rusty red-copper with sparkly gray-silver-like shimmers."
"Why?"
"I don't know, the red-copper reminds me of how the blur of people jaywalk and the color ignites a sense of rebelliousness that comes with breaking the law. The buildings remind me of shining a bright silver because of how the tall skyscrapers look down upon the blur of rusty copper. The colors intertwine, considering they are each on the other side of the spectrum. I don't make any sense whatsoever. Sorry."
"No, I sort of get what you're saying."
"Los Angeles?"
"A bright yellow with streaks of orange that you see when the sun sets. Also, the eye color could be another representation of the smog there."
"Oh my God," she let out a chuckle, "I like how LA is so full of opportunities, and everyone there is so open. I think a bright yellow is a beautiful eye color for LA."
"We make up the eye color, don't we?" I asked.
"What?" A flash of confusion bore on her eyebrows.
"Well, if the cities are the humans, then what are we? Are we the building blocks of the city? Are we the little cells that navigate and create who the city is?
"Yeah, I think we are..." She paused for a little while. "Without us, the cities would have no color."
"I mean, they would be green and blue—as the Earth would be if there were no humans, which isn't such a bad thing," I responded.
"True, but we would never know the other colors. We'd all be blind to the beauties of light reflecting upon prisms. We must be here for a reason."
"I just hope that we don't take that reason as an advantage and ruin the first colors who radiated on Earth."
