Chapter 6

Neither of us moved. It was so quiet inside the truck you could've heard a feather hit a marshmallow.

On top of not uttering a single word, neither of us dared to take our eyes off it either. We both watched in a sort of horrified silence as that thing continued to eat away at what was left of the officer inside his patrol car and after what felt like an agonizing eternity, I guess it decided it had its fill and finally disengaged its jaws from the officer's corpse.

Not that there was much left of him now anyway.

My stomach gave an uncomfortable lurch as I watched it exit the car. Even on all fours it was huge, its head clearing the side view mirrors of the patrol car. Looking at it now I don't know how I could have mistaken it for a normal wolf.

There was nothing normal about it.

We continued to watch with bated breath neither of us moving an inch as it licked the excess blood off its powerful jaws. Jaws that hid teeth that could easily tear through flesh like a hot knife cut through butter.

Ava and my mother's screams echoed throughout my head like a song blaring on the radio and I clenched my eyes shut.

Please just go away. I prayed silently.

You've already had your fucking fill, so just leave!

My eyes snapped open at the sound of my dad's sharp intake of breath, and then grew in size as I watched it slowly raise up on its haunches so it now stood on two legs instead of four. Standing straight up it now easily cleared the roof of the patrol car.

My heart was thumping a rapid and harsh beat against my ribs.

Please, please, please. Just let it go away.

Without warning, it tilted its head back and let loose a sound from the back of its throat so bone chilling and haunting I had to clench both of my hands into fists to keep them from shaking.

What the hell was it doing?

I chanced a quick glance over at my dad to see that all the color had drained from his face.

What the hell was happening?

Silently, my dad reached forward as if to start the truck again but I quickly reached out and grabbed his hand. If we started the car now it would definitely hear us and while we were in a truck and all it had was its four paws, I still didn't like our odds of escaping.

I looked back and forth between him and that thing and asked in a voice barely louder than the sound of a leaf hitting the ground, "What are you doing?"

"We have to leave. Now." was all he gave by way of answer.

Obviously we had to leave, but doing so after that thing was I don't know, maybe 2,000 miles away sounded like a better plan.

"It'll hear us."

"If we don't leave right now, that'll be the least of our worries."

I still wasn't sure what was happening right now, but the tone of his voice made me release his hand and quickly sit back in my seat. He reached forward again, ready to start the engine but by then it was already too late.

I finally understood why we should've left when there was only one of those things to worry about. Fear gripped my veins in an icy hold as I watched three more suddenly emerge from the tree line. All just as big and grotesque as the first.

I now realized what that sound it made earlier had been.

It was a call.

It was communicating.

It had just called three more of its friends to the dinner party.

I'd be damned if I was the hors-d'oeuvre.

"Start the car."

My dad placed his hand on the key and then turned to look at me. "As soon as I start this truck they'll be on us."

I swallowed hard and nodded once, never taking my eyes off them.

"Then we'll just have to make sure we're faster."

I nodded towards the keys. "Start it."

He looked at me for a second longer then nodded.

The engine started.

Like bugs drawn to a street lamp all four large heads turned our way and immediately they all raised up on two legs and began running full speed towards our truck.

My dad slammed his foot down on the pedal and we shot forward.

"Why aren't you reversing?!"

He shook his head.

"There's nothing for us back there. We have to keep moving forward."

I looked at the space between us and those things that was decreasing quickly with each second that passed.

Alright then. I guess if we couldn't go back and we couldn't go around then we'd go through.

Through them.

I reached up and grabbed the "Oh Shit!" handle just as my dad yelled out "Hold on!" and we crashed into the first of them.

I'd never been in a car accident before but I assumed this is what crashing into the side of a tree would feel like. The moment we hit it the impact caused the creature to go tumbling over the hood, cracking the windshield, and then it landed with a loud thud somewhere behind us. Where exactly it landed I'm not sure because I didn't bother looking. I was too busy looking at the other three who unlike their friend had stopped and instead of charging  full speed at our truck, had seemed to form a sort of triangular formation and waited.

These things weren't just mindless blood thirsty creatures and that made them even more dangerous.

My dad, also noticing what the other three were now doing swore and pressed down on the accelerator.

We were only a few feet from them and then suddenly we were passing  the two on the side  and the one who had stopped directly in front of us leapt clear into the air, clearing the hood of the truck.

I turned my head ready to ask what exactly had just happened when something large and heavy landed on the roof of our truck.

A scream tore from my lips as the added weight caused my dad to almost lose control of the wheel.

"Shit!"

Just then a large claw pierced through the metal and cloth of the roof our truck  like it were paper before yanking back out leaving a decent sized hole behind.

A portion of its face suddenly appeared above the hole , that glassy and murky eye looking right at me before a growl tore from its lips and it redoubled its efforts to get inside, tearing more metal away and making the hole even larger.

Knowing that my dad had to concentrate on driving I quickly grabbed the gun and aimed it towards the hole.

I just prayed I wouldn't go deaf after this.

Its face appeared right over the hole again and my finger squeezed the trigger.

The resounding boom that echoed inside the car was ear splitting, but it wasn't enough to drown out the sound of a painful growl and then a set of thumps as the impact of the bullet knocked it from the roof of the car and onto the asphalt.

I looked in the rear view mirror long enough to see its body tumble a few times before coming to a stop.

Our little victory was short lived however, because at that very moment two large shapes crashed into both sides of the car causing it to spin out of control before flipping.

When I opened my eyes again the world was upside down.

No, not the world. Me. I was hanging upside down.

The events prior came rushing back and I quickly looked to the left to see my dad, hopefully unconscious, hanging upside down in his seat thanks to his seatbelt.

There was a large gash on the side of his head that caused a steady flow of blood to leak down the side of his face.

"Dad?" I whispered and attempted to reach out to him but a sharp pain in my left shoulder had me sucking on air through my clenched teeth and I instantly dropped it.

Looking down or maybe it was up, considering I was still upside down, I saw a rather large piece of glass sticking out from my shoulder.

Great.

I looked back at my dad and gritted my teeth.

We had to get out of here before-

The sound of what could only be described as nails on a chalkboard cut my thoughts short.

They were still out there.

I couldn't tell how close they were or how many it was. All I knew was that I had to get the hell out of this truck and quick.

Bracing myself,  I quickly reached down and undid my seatbelt before falling from my seat.

Despite my efforts I still landed on my shoulder and a sharp cry tore from my lips as the piece of glass dug its way further through the tissue in my shoulder.

I only had time to take in a few deep breaths before the weight of something heavy slammed into the passenger door.

A louder scream escaped me as I turned and came face to face with one of those things for the second time today. It was crouched down and looking directly at me through the cracked window that looked like it was only seconds from shattering completely , and when that happened it was game over.

Knowing that its prey was in here and alive seemed to ignite some sort of carnal lust inside it as it began to claw and throw itself at the window like a rapid animal.

I scrambled back on all fours as best as I could in the cramped space and with a damaged shoulder.

I glanced around, frantically looking for the gun but it was nowhere to be seen.

My situation only went from bad to worse as I felt another weight crash into the driver's side door and then another land on the over turned car.

Glancing over my shoulder  I found another one of them trying to reach my dad by breaking the driver side window and I could only assume another one was sitting on the top of our overturned truck.

The sound of glass breaking and hitting the asphalt brought my attention back to the passenger window and dread filled me as I watched that thing stick its head through the window.

I screamed for all I was worth as it snapped its jaws wildly, salvia dripping from its open mouth as it tried to latch onto any exposed flesh.

I pulled my legs back as far as I could and out of its reach as it continued to try and force its way through the window.

Thankfully, in this situation at least, its large body put it at a disadvantage. It was too big to fit through the small space provided by the window and it soon realized this as it quickly pulled its head back with a frustrated growl.

I only had a second to think that maybe luck was on our side and maybe it had given up before a large hairy arm was reaching inside the window.

Just like the rest of its body it was rotting in places and missing fur and flesh and at the end of its meaty appendage were large black claws that had just caught a hold of the end of jeans before yanking forward.

"No!" I screamed as by body was yanked forward. I braced my left foot against the dash board while trying to grab onto anything my fingers came into contact with, and tried kicking wildly with my other leg to try and dislodge its claws from around my ankle but it was no use.

It had no intention of letting go.

At this point the lower part of my right leg was almost all the way out of the window, more glass cutting and digging into my skin as it was dragged across the windowsill but that pain paled in comparison to the pain I felt as its claws suddenly dug into my lower leg.

Hot white pain shot up my leg, a pain like nothing I had ever felt before, and an agonized scream followed soon after.

Another harsh pull on my leg and my left lost its purchase on the dashboard and then another and both of my legs were now halfway out of the car now.

I quickly flipped onto my stomach I clawed madly at the seats, control panel, seatbelt, anything to try and keep me inside the car because I knew without a doubt that once this thing pulled me out I was done for.

Another pull and now both of my legs were completely outside the car and all that could be heard was the sound of me screaming my lungs out.

I had just enough time to look up at my dad still hanging there unconscious before another sharp pull pulled the rest of my body out of the car.
