Chapter 39
Zephyra Point of View
"Hmm, three is a good lucky number. Three is good." I nodded in satisfaction.
Having three at a same time is so fulfilling, so exciting and also prevents so much pain from repetitive pregnancies and deliveries.
I love it.
I totally love it.
"For now." Dr. Rowan said with a slightly peaking frown.
Huh?
What does it mean?
It's not like the children inside the womb can regenerate into multiple by themselves!
Wait, don't tell me I have a special power now?
That can't be right?
"I have a feeling that it's more than three but cannot confirm it now. We will wait for a month more to see again. I will give you an appointment for a month later for further study." Dr. Rowan, through her cold exterior, said with a bit of confusion and frown.
More than three?
Aiya, I'm only this big, can I carry four kids at a time?
I thought three is just fine but now four... nevermind, we will cross the bridge when we come to it.
"Wil cause trouble, Doctor? How is her health and how is the babies doing?" A batch of honey-filled concern was dripping from grrrgal which made my heart feel so sweet.
Hehehe, having a husband is far better than not having one.
I like this.
Now a days there are so many types of fake, real and almost real kind of relationships going on among my generation and even I can't understand much.
Isn't this much better though?
You love someone, marry and stay together forever. If you have no one to love, give your parents a chance to find someone for you and choose accordingly to marry and stay together forever.
Such simple thing is twisted and complicated by people these days.
Yiyaa...
"Mother and children are very healthy as of now. To be very honest, I'm very surprised to see your wife so relaxed, healthy and strong for even carrying three or so fetuses in her womb."
All thanks to my ancestors' knowledge and blessings!
All thanks to them!
"The genders are still not clear at this point," Dr. Rowan said, squinting at the screen like she was trying to solve an ancient riddle. "Come back in a month. We'll have a clearer picture then."
She tapped away on her tablet and handed over a crisp sheet of supplements—vitamins, minerals, some name I couldn't even pronounce but looked suspiciously like powdered dragon bone.
Grrrgal took it like it was the holy scripture of prenatal care and studied it with grave seriousness, as if understanding it might unlock the secrets of the universe.
"I'll make sure she takes everything on time," he declared with a proud nod, as if he were a knight sworn to protect a very round, very pregnant queen.
I just sipped the last of my oat milkshake, feeling very majestic indeed.
Once the appointment wrapped up and I was free from cold gel, baby-counting technology, and all the clinical lights that made everything feel like a sci-fi movie, we headed back to the mansion.
Grrrgal drove like a paranoid chauffeur, eyes flicking between me and the road every five seconds, and I had to keep telling him, "Yes, I'm still breathing," just to make sure he didn't call an ambulance for no reason.
It might be because of the pregnancy or something else but these days I especially feel huge love for him.
God, I feeling shy!
By the time we stepped into the grand hallway, the scent of freshly baked cinnamon bread was already weaving its way through the air.
"Mom must be baking," I said, taking a deep breath.
Mom is an okay-ish cook but her baking skills are ancient level. So damn good!
I especially love her mango yogurt pudding and cinnamon buns with sweet red bean fillings.
Heavenly and orgasmic!
The moment we stepped inside the house, everyone, wherever they are and whatever they are doing, stopped everything and ran to us in a very drama-filled manner and surrounded me.
"How is it?"
"How is everything?"
"Zephy, baby, are you alright? What did the doctor say?"
"Is everything alright?" Everyone asked at the same time that I don't even who is talking what and how to answer them.
So, at this critical time, grrrgal took the baton to calm everyone down and explain our doctors visit clearly.
Grrrgal stepped forward with that strange, noble air of his—like he was about to give a press briefing on national security and not, in fact, an update on my uterus.
"Everyone, please calm down," he said, raising a hand. His voice was steady, authoritative, and instantly brought a hush over the chaos. "Dr. Rowan confirmed that both mother and babies are healthy. Everything is progressing smoothly."
Mom Valen gasped, hand flying to her chest. "Babies? Did you say—plural?"
"Yes," Grrrgal said with a very serious nod. "Three, confirmed. Possibly more."
The silence that followed was so thick you could've cut it with one of Dad's ancient letter openers. Everyone just stared. Eyes wide. Jaws dropping. Even Kaiya's chewing gum fell out of her mouth like her soul had momentarily left her body.
"Three?" Dad finally croaked. "Did you two... plan this?"
Hey, you can plan this too?
That's a news to me. I thought multiple babies happen on its own accord. I didn't know you can plan this biologically?
Kaiya turned toward me, stunned. "Wait, wait, wait. You can plan triplets?"
I laughed so hard I almost forgot I was pregnant with a mini army. "Guys, no, we didn't plan this. I didn't sit down one day and think, 'You know what would be fun? Turning my womb into a luxury resort for three babies.' It just... happened!"
"Which is even scarier," Dad muttered, sinking onto the nearest couch like the weight of becoming a grandfather to three at once had just caught up with him.
Mom, though, recovered fast. Like a true general of household command, her face shifted from shock to gentle determination in under ten seconds. "Then we prepare accordingly. Three babies means three times the joy. And also three times... everything. Alright, until the next doctors appointment, the only task for Zephy is to rest well and only task for Idris is to make sure she rests well."
"And exercise appropriately." Grrrgal added.
"Yes, that also." Everyone followed.
So, with vigorous determination, all of us worked towards keeping me healthy and fit. In the meanwhile, grrrgal's unlucky encounters lessened by a lot.
I wanted to help him find that Shadowbane but the other did not contact me or come to find me again so I'm also helpless.
If he comes to find me, I will try to click a picture of his and help grrrgal recognize him. But the other party is really very cautious.
Or... must be going through the bad tribulation that is caused by his own actions.
One month passed by in a blink and by the time of my next doctor's appointment, I am sporting a stomach that a nine months pregnant woman should pose but not six months pregnant one.
Since it is three or four kids inside, it is quite natural but I wonder how much my stomach will stretch in the next three months.
The next doctor's appointment had finally arrived—and this time, the whole cavalry came.
I waddled into the clinic like a determined, swollen balloon, flanked by my knight-husband and two high-ranking members of House Concern – mom and dad.
Looking at such bunch of high-end people I felt a bit embarrassed for the first time in my life because I had already turned into a public monument of interest in the house—now I was adding another chapter to the lore.
Dr. Rowan greeted us with her usual cool expression, nodding politely at the entourage. "Please come in."
I lay back on the exam bed, belly exposed to the cold jelly once again, and Grrrgal gently squeezed my hand. "We've got this," he whispered.
I gave him a tiny smile. "As long as you don't faint."
The scanning began. The room was silent except for the low hum of the machine and the occasional swish of the probe across my belly.
At first, everything was normal—blurry black-and-white images, tiny moving limbs, and the squishy outline of baby heads. But then Dr. Rowan frowned.
And frowned deeper.
And then... deeper still.
I watched her brows knit like they were stitching up a serious mystery novel. She zoomed in, tapped on the screen, adjusted angles, mumbled under her breath, and stared like she was trying to decipher some kind of ancient alien code. No one spoke. The room had grown so quiet I could hear Lord Halvar's deep, slow breathing behind me like we were standing at the edge of some dark forest.
"Doctor?" Grrrgal asked cautiously. "Is something wrong?"
Dr. Rowan didn't answer immediately. She just... stared. My heart, previously relaxed and optimistic, began thudding louder in my ears. Grrrgal's grip on my hand tightened.
Finally, she pulled back slightly from the machine and looked up, her eyes no longer cold but troubled.
What?
What is it?
Why are being so suspenseful about?
What the cosmic is cooking in my womb? Just say it out for my ancestors' sake!
"There are... eight heartbeats," she said, her voice low and heavy. Her voice was almost a whisper that even I, who was very close to her couldn't hear.
What did she just say?
"Huh?" I asked again, ignoring the disbelief on everyone's faces.
"Eight, there are eight children growing your stomach right now."
E-E-E-E-Eight?
Don't tell me all my ancestors are up for reincarnation at the same time?!
Eight children?
O-h My!
