Chapter 36
Idris Point of View
There are days when the universe seems determined to nudge you, ever so slightly, off your axis.
Not all days are the same.
Some arrive like loyal employees—clean, well-structured, holding a clipboard of predictable outcomes and a cup of black coffee.
Others show up like uninvited interns—spilling chai on your agenda and humming off-key affirmations about surrendering to the universe.
And then... then there are days that don't just go wrong.
They diffuse.
Like smoke in a locked room.
Or glitter in a carpet.
Impossible to track, impossible to stop, and absolutely impossible to explain to the shareholders.
Lately, my life had become one long, unedited blooper reel.
Not catastrophic. That would be too easy.
I'm not getting struck by lightning or framed for embezzlement or possessed by an ancient toad spirit.
No. My luck had taken the form of a very specific, very deliberate style of chaos—small, inconvenient, and deeply personal.
It began a few weeks ago. Quietly, like a mouse chewing through the blueprint of my sanity.
The first day I noticed something different about myself and something different around me was when the first smoke of unluckiness creeped into my life.
That day... that fateful day, I took demon girl on a short walk to maintain the healthy pregnancy. It was a walk to a very classy yet interesting handicrafts market in the city center.
We were holding hands, looking at all the clever and beautiful handmade items on the stalls and shops.
Everything was going well only, when we reached the end of the market and turned around to ask her if she wants to drink or eat something, I found a very horrifying truth.
The hand that was laying in my hand is not the hand of demon girl's.
The person who was walking a step behind me, holding my hand was not demon girl at all.
Heck, the hand I was holding was not even a woman's hand. It was a man with a very funny dressing style, a weird tourist glasses over his eyes and he was a very short and petite man.
Not body shaming at all but just... telling the truth of why I might've misunderstood him to be my wife.
Worst of all, he smiled at me very sweetly and I wished I died before I saw that smile.
I was never faced such embarrassment in my whole life that I faced that day.
It was so mortifying that I had to buy a mask, cover my face to look for demon girl. I couldn't show my face to anyone for a while then.
That incident still sends shivers to my spine. And that is not the end. That incident is just the start of my embarrassing, annoying and unlucky phase of life.
At first, I just thought it was a coincidence and did not mind it much but what followed next in the following days and weeks made me realize that I was indeed stuck in a loop of unfortunate events.
One time, only God knows why, but for the first time ever, I wore two different shoes for both the legs and completely embarrassed myself in my own office. My staff talked about it and entertained themselves on the matter for two whole days.
It was fun for them.
But for me... before I could fully face the annoying embarrassment, something else struck me.
This time, it was a glass of water.
In a very important business meeting with several of my clients, I was thirst, wanted to drink some water and quench my thirst.
Apparently, my pants were too. The glass suddenly, on its own, toppled from my hand and quenched the thirst of my pants in the place where both my legs intersect and a small third leg is sprouted out.
That was... sigh!
And then there was the incident where signed my favorite vlogger name on the contract papers.
And then there was the incident where I was in the garden of my own place, taking a simple walk and stopped to attend a call but stopped at a wrong place because there were creeper plants around me and two thin vines plugged themselves into my nostrils just at the place I stopped.
What was even more annoying was, it was captured on camera by my own little sister.
That was... sigh!
And then there was the incident where I unlocked my car but the door didn't open. Turns out, it was another car that looks exactly like mine that I was opening.
And the car owner was right behind me trying to understand the situation.
And the car owner turned out to be none other than my university pal.
That was... sigh!
Now, everyone in my friends' circle knows about it.
And then there were several incidents of burning my mouth while drink coffee, stubbing my toes even when I was wearing shoes, walking into glass doors, hair dryer shocks where my hair stood up like porcupine needles, sneezing out mucus in public, farting loudly out of nowhere even when my stomach is clean, getting bitten my bees, time when my belt loosened a little and my pant fell off suddenly and what not!
Oh my God, I experienced so many of these and such variety of annoying incidents that I'm starting to worry about my mental health now.
I'm starting to feel a little scared of unknown now.
Every time I see a corner, I expect it to stub me. Every time I sit in a chair, I half-wonder if a screw will poke out like it's on some evil little schedule. Even elevators feel personal now—I stepped into one and the button panel fell off. Just... detached itself.
The universe isn't just against me. It's clowning me.
How am I going to get out of this mud?
How am I rise like a pure lotus out of that mud?
Who is going to help me?
Who exactly can help me?
"Mrs. Valen." Owen shouted suddenly, scaring the heck out of my mind.
These days, I'm already a little emotionally sensitive and he is scaring me at this time. I need to teach him a lesson later when this ill-fated phase is over.
"What are you shouting about?" I looked at him crankily.
"That's right, sir. Mrs. Valen. Why don't you ask Mrs. Valen?"
"Ask my mom about what?"
"Not your mom but the other Mrs. Valen." Owen exclaimed exaggeratedly.
The other Mrs. Valen?
"You mean, my father married someone else? Have you lost your mind?" I got up to punch him for talking nonsense when he saved himself by running far away from.
"Sir, I was talking about Mrs. Valen the junior; your wife. Isn't your wife the best person to help you with your current situation? Why not approach her?"
Wait... that right!
Isn't demon girl the one who is most suited to turn around my unfortunate situation?
Why didn't I think about that?
I must've lost my mind with all the bad things happening to me that I forgot that my own wife is an abnormal person.
So, without wasting any more time, I drove back home and rushed into our bedroom where I saw her reading some kind of abnormal book on the bed.
It had a title in ancient-looking script and sparkled faintly in a way that made me feel judged.
"Grrrgal," She smiled and closed the book she was reading, "I see you wanted something from me? I calculated this morning that you would need me to help you deal with something big today." She paused.
"What is the matter?" She asked.
I walked to her and sat on the bed near her. I hesitated for a minute before talking about the issue.
"I have been facing some difficulties these days."
"Um hmm."
She sipped her tea like she was watching a drama she already knew the ending of. With that look. That annoying, knowing look.
"At first, I thought it was just a coincidence but for almost seven weeks now, I've been plagued with horrible experiences every day."
"Um hmm."
No gasp. No comforting pat. Not even a pitying 'oh no.' Just another sip.
Aish! Say something more than that.
How uncool!
"All these... they are events of bad luck that has been torturing me."
"I know."
Her calm reply slapped the logic out of my skull. For a second, I forgot how words worked. I just stared at her.
I mean, hey, can you please react like a normal wife?
"And then there is – wait! You know? What do you mean you know?" Don't tell me you calculated that too.
I mean, if you calculated that, why didn't you help me?
"I mean, I know you were experiencing bad luck these days. I was the one who gave the bad luck charm to Mr. Shadowbane." A bolt of thunder struck in my mind.
I seem to understand every word she spoke but together as a sentence, I don't seem to understand at all.
What does she mean she gave the bad luck charm to Mr. Shadowbane?
Who exactly is this Shadowbane?
No – Why does it even matter to me?
"What do you mean?"
"Ah, Mr. Shadowbane came to me few weeks ago and asked for a charm to make you a loser."
Again...
I seem to understand every word she spoke but together as a sentence, I don't seem to understand at all.
My brain is just not braining at all at this moment.
