Chapter 31

Zephyra Point of View

"No one's going anywhere."

When I tell you the vibe in the room swooped like a crow on caffeine, I'm not exaggerating.

Because the one who said that? Big boss spirit.

Like, if ancestral hierarchy had a VIP section, this guy sat on a throne made of stardust and judgment. He floated forward like a drama professor doing his entrance scene — robes flowing, face stern, beard very philosophical and possibly braided with cosmic strings.

"We will remain in the Spirit Whispering House," he announced, "and will maintain its decorum. We, the honored ancestors, have spent millennia in the underworld, and now... we wish to take a little vacation."

I gasped internally and also externally.

Wait—WAIT—they're staying?!

Like staying staying?

For a second, nobody spoke. Not even the dust dared swirl.

And then, me — because I am me — I exploded with sparkles and approval.

"I fully support this idea," I said, clapping with enough enthusiasm to start a round of applause in the afterlife. "Ten out of ten! Five stars! Would haunt again!"

Grrrgal looked like he had just been sentenced to spiritual jury duty for the rest of his natural life.

"You're... excited about this?" he asked, blinking at me like he was trying to focus through the chaos that is me.

"Of course!" I beamed. "Is it even something to ask? My dear ancestors like our spirit whispering house, it should be our luck. With them here, we don't have to worry about another out-of-control incident as they would fix it. And the best part is, they can also have some fun when the house is opened to people for some spirit consultation of their own. Wouldn't it be good if my ancestors stay here also help us control other spirits that appear every now and then?"

This is a perfect idea!

My poor ancestors; they must be extremely bored in the underground. Now that they have a chance to have some fun, I am more than happy to provide them with resources.

Grrrgal opened his mouth, thought better of it, and shut it again. His 'please save me' expression was rapidly reaching record levels.

But as I twirled in excitement and the ancestors began politely inspecting the house like they were rating it on Supernatural Airbnb, a tiny thought began pecking at the back of my head.

Like, peck-peck.

Heheheh –

Wait a minute...

Something didn't feel right.

It wasn't loud. It wasn't even obvious at first.
It was like a quiet string in the back of my mind had gone out of tune — not enough to break, just enough to feel wrong in my bones.
A hollow space, soft and cold, nestled right between the warmth of the ancestors.

I looked around the Spirit Whispering Hall again, slower this time.

Not the way you look when admiring your ghostly great-great-aunt's regal floatiness. No, this time, I was searching.
For a shape. A warmth. A signature presence.

My smile slowly slipped, like it had been balancing on the edge of my cheek and finally gave up.

My hands, still hovering mid-gesture from excitedly describing ghostly house renovations, slowly dropped to my sides. A chill tiptoed across my shoulders.

Grrrgal noticed first in the way I stopped buzzing.

"Zephyra?" he asked, his voice lower now, careful. "What's wrong?"

I didn't answer immediately. I turned in a slow, full circle, scanning again.
One by one, my ancestors met my gaze — kind, ancient, curious.
None of them avoided me.

But none of them were them.

"My parents," I whispered.

Grrrgal took a step closer, frowning. "What about them?"

"They're not here," I said softly.

The words hit the room like a slow ripple in a still lake.

"Hmm? What do you mean?" Grrrgal asked in a deliberate slow tone.

"My parents are not among the ancestors who visited us today. Where's my mom and dad?" Although I whispered softly, everyone could hear me well.

The air changed. Not colder — just denser. Like the spirits all inhaled at the same time and forgot to let go.

One of the older ancestors, her translucent hair wrapped like ribbons of moonlight, stepped forward with a tenderness that made my stomach twist.

"Child," she said gently, "they are not among us anymore."

My mouth opened, but no words came out. Just air. Just disbelief.

"What... do you mean?" I asked, but I already knew. The part of me that had felt the imbalance was already catching up.

"They've moved forward," she continued, not unkindly. "Your father has already crossed into the next path. And your mother... is nearly there."

I stared.

Next path?

"You mean... they've reincarnated?"

The gentle female ancestor nodded. "Your mother is in queue, as your people say. Her essence is preparing. But your father... he has returned."

Returned where?

Before I could ask, her gaze softened further, and she added — almost with a touch of teasing in her tone —

"He has entered your womb."

"Oh. So it's like t – Wait, What?" My entire soul short-circuited.

What did I just hear?

"My... my what?" I blinked once. Then again. Then slowly, robotically, looked down at my stomach.

"Your womb," the ancestor confirmed.

The silence was so thick, it could've been cut with spirit scissors.

"I'm sorry," I said faintly, "but did you just say... I'm pregnant? With my dad?"

Grrrgal made a choking sound next to me, like he had just tried to swallow a ghost and failed.

Hold on, that did not come out right.

So, I am pregnant.

Oh my God! I'm pregnant and I didn't even know?

I am Pregnant!

Pregnant with a baby who has soul of my dad.

Now, this seems less awkward.

I blinked at the glowing ancestor, then back down at myself, and then over to Grrrgal — whose eyes were the size of moon-fruit. If moon-fruit were known for being horrified, pale, and on the verge of fainting.

"I'm pregnant," I repeated slowly looking at grrrgal, as if saying it out loud would make the words line up better in my head.

Grrrgal raised a hand, pointed vaguely at my torso, then back at the ancestor. "With... her dad?"

The ancestor just smiled, unbothered. "The cycle of life is never linear, child."

"That doesn't sound like a no," he whispered, then looked at me like he doesn't know if he should be happy that he is going to be a father or be awkward that he is going to be a father to my own father.

"We are going to have a baby." Grrrgal chanted over and over softly with a strange expression on his face.

Disbelief and joy were dominant among them.

"No, we have to go to the hospital first and get a thorough check up to confirm the news. Let's go now." Grrrgal, after coming out of his daze, ushered me out.

I wave a goodbye to all my ancestors and followed grrrgal out after the whole issue is settled well.

The moment we stepped out, the family waiting for us ran to us and asked if everything was alright. Grrrgal just confirmed it and hurriedly took me to the car.

"What happened? Why are you in a hurry to take Zephy away?" Kaiya asked with a frown.

"That's right, Idris. Why are you being in such a rush?" When mom followed up, I informed them that I might be pregnant and we are going to hospital for confirmation.

Everyone was shocked at first but then they were so excited that they followed us to the hospital with an enthusiastic fanfare of their own.

The hospital grrrgal took me to belongs to the Valen family so everything went smooth. My blood was taken for tests and results would be out in an hour.

I heard that usually, it would take at least a week for the report to come out but since the hospital is ours, doctors are ours, it will be done in an hour.

The waiting room was charged like a thundercloud trapped in a fishbowl.

Grrrgal paced up and down the hallway like he was burning spirit runes into the floor tiles. Mom sat ramrod straight on the plastic hospital bench, chewing the end of her sleeve like it owed her rent. Kaiya muttered prayers in three different languages — none of which she actually spoke. Even the nurse at the reception desk kept sneaking glances at us like we were about to break out into synchronized screaming.

As for me? I was curled up on the cold vinyl seat, a blanket over my lap and a cup of lukewarm tea in my hand that I forgot how to drink five minutes ago.

"It's been twenty-three minutes and fifty-two seconds," Grrrgal muttered, checking the time again. "They said an hour. That means—"

"Thirty-six minutes left," Kaiya said. "We can math, Idris."

Mom leaned forward. "Zephyra, honey. Are you... feeling anything?"

"Like an existential freefall through space and time?" I replied. "Yeah, a little."

Suddenly, a nurse stepped out of the lab hallway — young, trembling, holding a white envelope like it was sealed with cosmic secrets.

"Mrs. Zephyra Quinn Virelle Valen?"

"That's me," I croaked.

She nodded, swallowed nervously, and handed me the envelope and I opened it without wasting any time.

There in the report is a lot of information that I could not understand for the life of me. But at the end of the report, in bold larger font, is written –

'Pregnancy result – Positive'
