Chapter Five
"Okay, come on, Hailey. You can do this. It's Disney. It can't be that scary," I tell myself. A little kid bounces in line next to me, excited. "See even little kids want to ride this." I look around at all the decorations in the queue. I have to admit, even though I'm slightly scared to ride this, the queue is awesome. "It's just a ride. Everything's fake anyway."
"Are you talking to yourself?" A female's voice says, startling me. I take a quick moment to compose myself and look over at her. Her voice sounds familiar, but I can't put my finger on where we spoke.
Her skin is tan from being outside in the hot sun. Her slightly baggy Disney Villains shirt bunches at her waist, making their faces look funny. She's wearing black ripped shorts and vans. I wonder how she's not burning up in wearing all black. I'm wearing a white shirt and I'm still sweating like there's no tomorrow.
She moves her bangs out of her eyes, the rest of her brown hair is up in a ponytail. Her eyes are milk chocolate. They're captivating. You can tell that there's pain in her past. If you look close enough, you can see specks of gold hidden in her eyes. She has a mix of freckles and stickers of stars on her cheeks. Her eyebrows are thick, but not too thick.
"Uhhh," I feel my cheeks turn red. "Would you think I'm crazy if I said yes?"
"Maybe. Depends on what you're talking to yourself about."
I bite my lip in embarrassment. "Well ... let's just say this will be my first time riding the Haunted Mansion the whole 19 years of my life."
"Wait, seriously?" She gawks at me. I slowly nod my head in disappointment. She looks around to see if anyone else heard my confession. "How come?"
"Well, I tried going on it when I was little but I could never make it passed the big room area. I always got scared." She laughs and normally I would feel hurt, but her laugh is so angelic and addictive, I could listen to it all day.
"That's cute. But come on, you have to ride it. It's a classic. It's not a Disney trip unless you ride the Haunted Mansion. You can even ride with me." Come on, I finally calm down a little bit and know I'm blushing even more at the thought of riding next to this girl. "My name's Chris by the way."
"Hailey," I say smiling.
~ ~ ~
"Oh my god," I say once we get out the ride. "I can't believe I was scared to go on that! That was so much fun!" My face is sore from smiling.
"I know! See, I told you that it was a classic." She wasn't wrong. I got nervous when we were going up during the scene with all the staircases upside down, though. Chris noticed and took my hand to comfort me. Again, normally I would be bothered, but I feel as though I've known Chris for a while. I blushed the whole time and silently thanked Disney for making the ride dark.
We spent the rest of the day together. We ate dole whip and a turkey leg, rode the Peter Pan ride and Big Thunder Mountain. Chris also forced me to ride Splash Mountain. I didn't like that ride as much, although it was a good way to cool off. We watched some of the parades on Main Street and sat at Casey's Corner waiting for the fireworks.
"What's your favorite Disney movie?" I ask Chris.
"Hmmm," She pauses and thinks for a moment. "I think I would have to say Nightmare Before Christmas."
"Really? I've never seen it."
"Oh, it's good. The characters are so different from Disney's other movies. Though, thats because of Tim Burton." I thought that the characters looked terrifying, but I wasn't going to tell her that. "What about you?"
I rack my brain of all the movies I've seen. "I'm going to go with my current favorite, Lady and the Tramp." Chris doesn't look surprised. In fact, she doesn't really say anything at all. "Is everything alright?"
"Dan used to love that movie." Oh, she has a boyfriend. I can't understand quite why I'm a little bummed about this.
"I didn't realise you had a boyfriend." I hugged myself for comfort of embarrassment. Chris bursts out in laughter. "What? Was It something I said?"
She tries to regain her breathe and wipes some tears from her eyes. "I don't have a boyfriend," she says between laughs. "Dan is my brother." Well that makes me feel like an idiot. "He's six. I say used to 'cause grew out of the phase. He still watches it from time to time."
"Oh," I say, giving and awkward laugh. Do I ask if she's single?
"Yes." Shit, did I say that out loud? "Yes." I said that out loud too? Chris laughs again, shaking her head. The lights around Main Street U.S.A. go dim and the crowd goes quiet at the sound of music playing. "It's a shame they don't do the electrical parade anymore."
"I know. To me, that was Disney. The lights on the parade, seeing Tinker Bell fly down from the castle. Did you know that I used to believe in Tink so much that I thought she was up there making the fireworks go off?" I look over at her to see her response.
She smiles an intoxicating smile and looks at me. "That's cute." I smile back at her. And as if on cue, the fireworks start to go off.
