Army recruiting
Erza Pov
I slowly woke up in the master bedroom from the bells ringing at the cathedral of Dragnof making me rub my eyes slowly. I yawned and noticed Rose sleeping next to me on the bed. She opened her eyes slowly. "Morning." She replied tiredly. "Morning Rose." I smiled at her and stroked her head gently.
I gazed down to my 4 month old baby bump smiling softly its a few days after the changes my mother had made in the laws of Dragnof and set some of them into the Constitution of Dragnof that cannot be changed at all without the Queen and King agreeing. We signed them and passed the new laws the same day as those people were executed. There was an outcry but most citizens agreed on the changes. Adultery and infidelity are now set as crimes to make the humans have morals and dignity again being cheated on is emotionaly bad and we should not behave like an animal anymore.
I stood up slowly and walked over to the walk in dresser grabbing my pink colored princes kimono and putting it on.
"Morning Erza, I hope you slept well." My mother asked and I nodded happily. "I did and you seem to have too." I replied and she agreed. I looked over to Y/n and gave him a gentle kiss before walking out of the dresser.
I opened the door of the balcony and stepped outside to see the city going on in a merry way there was no yelling of crazy women since as soon as you take away the wood that keeps the fire burning it will vanish like it was never there to begin with and now I can see happy faces of men and women alike as they treat each other the same way and there isn't a single angry looking one, yet I feel some sort of mistrust in the air.
"Look mother, your law changes have positively affected the citizens of our country." I stated and she nodded placing her hands on the stone railing. "Yes but there are certain things which aren't solved yet and that's the poverty of people in my kingdom that I will not stand to see." She said in a more then worried tone.
"How do you plan on getting the beggars and poor people away?" I asked in wonder looking over to her. She gave me a small smirk in return. "I've got an idea I'll tell you it while we eat at that bakery down there." She replied pointing to it.
. . .
We sat down on the chairs while being looked at from all the people and I placed Rose down into the baby chair. "I'm glad that you let me train a little on holding a baby, since you are their size." I said and she let out a small scoff. I gazed to my left to see Heine and Juliet sit on another table while Y/n, my mother and I sat at another. We ordered 3 strawberry cake slices from the waiter and started to eat them. "So would you care to enlighten me on how you want to solve the problem with the poor citizens?" I asked and she nodded swiftly while using a napkin to clean her lips. "Of course Erza, I plan to make them be part of the army, I'm sure they are capable of something." She replied calmly and I knotted my eyebrows up in confusion. "How are you going to do that?" I asked bewildered while placing down the fork.
"I'll talk to them personally and I've asked the general of my army to come with me and tell me what kind of requirements they need to fulfill in order to be selected." She replied calmly.
I gazed over to Y/n who was listening carefully to what she said. "I'm sure we can even have the lightly mentally challenged in the army, we just need to know what kind of disability they have." He exclaimed and Irene nodded. "Of course my love that's to take into account too." She replied quickly.
"I really need to take classes in politics to know how you think mother." I pouted while taking in a piece of strawberry cake and she giggled softly. "That's nonsense Erza." She scolded and hit my head lightly. "you are either born with a talent of being a good leader or not, there's no in between but you can learn posture and the way you talk, I can show you the books but I guarantee you that you have all of it already due to your blood, the Dragnof family has a large history of politics both in and out of its kingdom and they have never been in any classes that had politics in them as there are some things I don't agree on, yet I control what they teach and with Anna now in the committee I can be sure to have good citizens, but I wouldn't mind if you would go to the lyceum to learn a bit of your countries history." She said and then smiled softly.
. . .
We walked to the quarters of the poor citizens in town and I was shocked to see people live in such conditions, they slept under the open sky and some others were missing arms or some parts of their legs. I've seen corpses in better condition then these poor people. The stench coming from here was also almost unbearable. "If you cannot hold this smell Erza then use a napkin or leave if you cannot stand it, I wont do any of it as I want to show the poor folk of my kingdom that I'm not looking down at them but I want to help them." My mother spoke and then cursed. "I've smelled burned flesh and rotten corpses on the battlefield so this is nothing but it breaks my heart seeing their lost souls here." She murmured and clenched her hand. I gazed over to Y/n, Rose and the General of the army that was rather scarce with soldiers who both were behind us with swords on their hips but their hands away from the hilt.
"Let me do the talking Erza." Irene spoke quickly. She knelt down on one of the poor people looking at him with concern. "I'm Queen Irene L Dragnof and I've come to listen to your suffering, I want to hear it as I'm as much your leader as I'm for the wealthier folk of my kingdom, tell me who is the one taking charge in your little community." She said and the man pointed to someone.
My mother thanked him and headed for the man speaking with him a few words, after a few seconds he rang a bell and Irene made us look at all of the people who looked over to us. "Alright guys we have a a high status person here, she's the queen of this kingdom which was ruined by greed and the moral decay of people, we all have heard the tales of the great dragon queen when we were young and how she treated her citizens like her own flesh and blood and its her so please stay quiet and listen to what she has to say." He yelled and Irene then thanked him and walked to the front.
"I'm Irene L Dragnof and ruled this kingdom 400 years ago, I've gone through a war that caused great loss in my country but not only that, I've been thrown into my own cell in this very kingdom by my husband at the time who had raped me in the night of our political marriage and shortly after the dragon war had ended I was having his child, a child I loved even if it wasn't through a good happening. I spend three years in prison being tortured, humiliated and sometimes starved for days. When the day of my execution came I've tried to bargain to my husband that he should let me out of this cell since I did not want to bring Erza into this world in a cell that was not how I wanted her to see the light. But he denied that no woman can have it last 3 years and he's no father of a monster, he tried to slice her out of me but that caused me to turn into a dragon and kill him. I flew away into the mountains and stayed there for 400 years, one day I met Zeref who turned me back into a human and I could have my daughter finally. I chose a place under a cherry tree to bring her into this world and once I had her I was the happiest I could ever be, but my mind was corrupted by my suffering and I wanted to enchant myself into her. I was conflicted greatly, my instinct said to protect her but I endured this for so long to have a real body again. In the end I chose to give her up in order to give her a life I couldn't give her. I hope that you now understand that I'm not someone that lived without hardship, I've had a hard life and looked into the sky knowing that one day all I had done will turn out good which it did and I cannot allow other people to be miserable." She said and looked down. "I want you the poor folk of my kingdom to be cared for and to have a save place to sleep and live, what I propose is for you the ones who can work to enlist in the army of my kingdom to protect and serve me as I protect and serve my people to make a better future for all." She said in a soft tone and smiled at them.
"What will we be doing going in a war?" One of them asked and my mother shook her head. "Of course not, I have no intention to ever start a war, the only war I fought was the one to defend my kingdom against dragons, I'm for peace and stability not war and chaos if there would be one to make a war it would be my husband who is the new king of this kingdom and father of my child and my daughters one too." She explained to him calmly.
"What will we have to do as guards?" Another asked her. She smiled softly. "You will patrol the city and sometimes you and several others will patrol the kingdoms farmland to see if the farmers have any problems which need to be attended at, your job is to catch any thieves or criminals and throw them into the prison for their crimes, that's the simple part, you also have to punish all the citizens who are being immoral and show indecent behavior in public, I have zero tolerance for people who behave in a way that is destroying their dignity or that they take away the dignity of others by torturing them." She spoke her voice getting firm and loud. "I want us to live in a world where we can look each other in the eyes as equals and not as enemies and those women that I had executed were the enemies of us women not just you men." She said and then bowed. "I thank you for listening to me and to everyone of you who is is handicapped from a missing limb or injury I'm sure we can find a way to help you too live in dignity. All those who want to enroll in the army please talk to the general and he's going to bring you all to the military main building and ready for the the 4 months of training where you will learn the laws, how to read and write and the basics of the Legion of Dragnofs fighting which was feared by most kingdoms for their strength and spirit. Once you all are signed up and the general comes to ask me to inspect it I will happily welcome you to the Legion and who knows maybe some of you will even become my palace guards." She said and smiled happily. "Until then I will try to make this kingdom stand on its feet as I have to deal with a lot, I just hope I'm done before the children are born." She said and the poor people clapped and cheered while standing up and we started to walk away again.
"How many do you think we got to enlist." Y/n asked and Irene just smiled. "Do you see my grin, I know we hooked almost all of them." She replied proudly.
I looked over to her as we arrived back on the palace. "I'm going to the library of the palace to learn about the past of the kingdom." I stated and my mother smiled. "I will gladly come with you as I want to show you something." She replied and I nodded.
There was something which was making me curious about this place, I wanted to know its history and so we walked into the library that was located in the base level of the palace as the giant bookshelves were heavy and stored large amounts of books from several centuries ago. "Be careful with them Erza some are now over 600 years old as this part of the palace was only accessible by the royal family and some who I allowed." She spoke and I gazed up to a picture of a women with scarlet hair the same length as I have with an armor that looked like a knight. "Who's this." I asked and she smiled up to it. "This is my mother and your grandmother she was called the Liones of Dragnof a proud women who fought at the front line of a war even when she was pregnant, I always looked up to her as an idol who I wanted to be but I had failed her. Both her hand my father died when I didn't even have my 18th birthday. I had taken huge losses for a war that was only having loss at both sides and no winner, all the dragons I had tried to protect died from the very ones fighting for them. I'm just glad she didn't see me failing and on my knees when Belserion the one who raised me after my parents death had been killed by Acnologia." She said and I grabbed her hand. "You did what you could, no need to apologize." I said and she nodded, tears slowly forming on her eyes.
"Hey no need to cry Irene, you did your best, you still are an amazing leader and mother so don't cry." Y/n spoke softly and wiped the tears away.
I grabbed a book about the year 300 and opened it. I was met with a map that had much smaller kingdoms and far more then now. The neighboring kingdom that my grandmother seemed to have fought against was called Wyrn and on the northern side was a kingdom called Tirol a large and very proud kingdom known for its knights, proudful traditions and good alliance to Dragnof. "Oh you found the map of the past kingdoms. Tirol was called the land of castles as they had the largest amount of them, now they are mostly used as residence for the nobbles of the various places as they lost their status in order to stay alive from a civil war that happened around 350 years ago." She explained and I looked back into the book. There was the image of my grandmother in armor and in the queens clothes and in both she looked feminine yet fierce at the same time.
"She really was a Lion." I whispered as I saw an image of her kicking a man from a horse on full running speed.
"Can you see it now Erza, the women of the Dragnof blood are born warrioress just like the males we are the same headstrong women, yet when we are in a time of peace we are behaving feminine and with dignity while the males of the Dragnof blood would usually be fighting and boasting about their battles while we thought of how to make the kingdom better and raise the next generation of adults, its all in the books of your ancestors." She said and I looked over to her reading a book too and Y/n was reading with Rose another book, I had to smile while thinking that he could be doing this with a baby soon.
