Chapter 2

SELENE USHERED the minor god Victor to the room's receiving area leaving the sleeping Kyla on the bed covered by the thick canopy. Clad in her nightdress, Selene sat right in front of Victor who was calmly sipping a chamomile tea. His elegant yet sharp grace never eased her wariness but hearing that he's willing to help her husband was something that Selene could not refuse.

"You said you'd help," Selene started the conversation. She had no intention to chat idly with him so she went straight to the point.

Victor merely glanced at her as an acknowledgment. "And I will. So your name is Selene huh. You looked exactly like – "

"Luna, I know. The painting in his office made it clear." After all, Kyla painted it himself for her. "Can we go to the part where you'll save him?"

Victor's entertained look was not welcome for Selene but she needed his help so she refrained from talking back.

"Duchess, do you know who your husband is?"

Selene felt quite insulted but she chose to go along with Victor's quirks. "Yes, of course."

"Then, will you trust me and go with me?" Victor offered Selene his right hand. The golden marking of his arm shone like fireflies in the room.

Kyla, I'm doing this for you. Selene looked back at the bed where her husband laid. She had no choice but to cling to any hope that she could get.

And right now, this minor god of the undead is my one and only hope.

Breathing heavily, Selene took Victor's hand and together they vanished into thin air.

THE TOWERING pagodas in front of Selene made her recognized the place immediately. The cold breeze of the night sent shivers in her spine so she hugged herself as she followed Victor towards the entrance of Lykaon's Temple.

"Why did you bring me here? Isn't this the place that you sealed Lykaon in the legend?"

Lykaon was neither living in the stars nor roaming in the Earth freely. Victor was the friend of Lykaon who betrayed the latter in the end.

"Yes, the legend of Lykaon. Quite a nostalgic tale, if I may add. In the legend, Lykaon who is the god of the wolves met a woman in the Moor River. The woman saved the injured god and brought him to her home without knowing that she brought home a god. Many were after Lykaon so when he woke up, he ran away to save the human girl not knowing that he will be leaving his heart along with her. He searched for her but she was never seen until the harvest festival came. Lykaon saw her again under the rain. But every time they would start to get along, the human girl would always leave. The third time they met, Lykaon discovered that the human girl was dying and he could not accept their borrowed fate. So he seeks the help of a prime god, Lykaon bargain his immortality to the prime god in exchange for one full cycle of a lifetime with the human girl. The prime god agreed with the bargain but there's a catch, should Lykaon stopped loving the human girl then he would die after five hundred years. Not caring about the condition, Lykaon left the prime god's territory and arrived at the human girl's home with no traces of the woman he loved. Overcome with despair, Lykaon lashed out to the world until the god of the undead came and betrayed the wolf god, sealing him in this temple forever. Or so legend says."

The entire time that Victor was retelling the legend that every citizen of Aistin Kingdom knew, Selene saw sadness in his eyes. It was not the eyes who betrayed his friend.

"But why did you bring me here just to tell a story that I already know?"

Victor faced her, "The prime god in the legend was Hades. And the name of the human girl in the legend was Luna."

What?

"What are you trying to say? That my husband is a reincarnated god?" Disbelief and fear laced upon Selene's voice.

Victor grimly shook his head, "Duke Kyla Shinoha, the Alpha of the Immortals, is Lykaon himself. And he's dying because of the condition set by Hades in their bargain. You can save him, Selene. You can break Hades' curse!"

"You're just playing with us! You still resented Lykaon that's why you're targeting my husband!"

Victor snapped his fingers. One moment they were both outside the temple and the next moment they were inside of the restricted temple where not even high priests could come in.

"What was sealed here is your husband's memory. Technically, since your Kyla can't remember that he is Lykaon."

There's no god here. Victor is right. Selene thought as she scanned the altar with no traces of a wolf god who was supposed to be sealed here.

"Then why can he remember about Luna?"

Victor looked at her solemnly, "It is because Luna is not just in his mind but in his heart."

Selene thought that she was so used to the pain after being married to Duke Kyla but hearing how he loved Luna still caused her immense pain.

Swallowing her pain, she asked Victor. "Then let's go ask Hades for help."

"A bargain between gods is not something that can be meddled with. Though Hades knows how to save Lykaon, there's still another person who knows how to save him."

"Who?"

"Lykaon himself, he was there when the bargain happened."

"Then give him back his memories!" Selene was desperate.

Victor sadly shook his head, "These memories were sealed for a reason and that reason is enough to kill him now."

Losing all her strength, Selene slumped to the ground as tears started to fall. "Then why bring me here when there's no hope at all?"

Victor crouched to her level, "Who said there's no hope? You are here, right? You can save the man you love."

"How? Tell me!" Selene reached for him desperately.

"Travel back to the legend's timeline using Lykaon's memory. I can help you with that while you go there and learn how to save him."
