Book Review: Suee and the Shadow
Suee and the Shadow is a standalone webcomic recently printed as a physical graphic novel. It is written by Ginger Ly, and illustrated by Molly Park. The story follows twelve-year-old loner Suee Lee (pronounced Soo-ee) as she moves to a new school. However, something strange is going on at this school, which Suee quickly learns once her shadow comes to life. Suee and her fellow students Haeun (pronounced Ha-oon), a loser who is constantly bullied by Yejin (pronounced Yeh-jin), and Hyunwoo (pronounced Hyuhn-woo), a straight-A star student, begin to investigate the strange students known as Zeroes, who have lost their shadows... Does this have a connection to the strange behaviours of Suee's shadow? And what is up with that odd pot? That's what the Zero Detective club wants to find out.
Suee and the Shadow is a fantastic read, with beautifully dark graphics and an intriguing mystery. Suee is a very well-developed character, considering she only has 236 pages of pictures to convey her personality, and her cynical worldview is a refreshing change from the positive, happy female characters that litter today's media. Haeun is a very soft spoken girl, but she legitimately cares about her two friends, and she is the metaphorical glue that keeps the Zero Detective Club together. Hyunwoo can come off as somewhat cocky, but this slowly takes a backseat as the three grow closer, and he is shown to be legitimately concerned about his friends, as well as sensitive on the topic of his family. Together, these three make a unique main cast with beautiful chemistry.
All in all, Suee and the Shadow is a wonderful read that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good graphic novel. It is a masterpiece of storywriting that stands head-and-shoulders above many others.
It's categorized under 741.59519 Ly in the Juvenile Non-Fiction section.
