Chapter 13
Within a few seconds, a door to the left had whirred open. I'd never even noticed it was there before and by the look on Jake's face, he hadn't either. There'd been no obvious handle or hinges which made me think it was hidden for a reason - yet he was willing to show it to us.
"I'll give you ten minutes." The voice said sternly. We smiled at each other as we began to make our way over to the door, Jake stopping just before we walked in.
"Is this room bugged?" Jake asked, looking up at the speaker in the ceiling. I gave him a slightly confused look as he waited for an answer. What did that matter? We'd spoken in every room so far and hadn't minded if they were listening. What was he worried about?
"No. One of the few rooms that isn't. I'll have a guard collect you in ten minutes." The voice spoke confidently. I tried to pull Jake closer to the room but he didn't budge.
"How do I know you're not lying?" He retaliated quickly. I rolled my eyes at him, knowing he was wasting the short time we were going to have together.
"I have no need to. Yet." The voice said before audibly cutting off from us. Jake hesitated for a second before striding into the room, hand in mine to take me with him. As soon as we entered, the door whirred closed behind us. I took a moment to study where the door had been, one again noting no hinges or handles. The door was a hidden one, probably for staff to pass freely without any issue. You could just about see a gap between the door and the frame but unless you really looked for it, you'd never have noticed. Now I would.
"Woah." Jake breathed out as he looked around the small room. It was like a staff lunch room, albeit small enough to seat only around four people. It had a blue couch that ran along the outside of the room, above it were some cupboards that seemed stacked with plates and sachets, teas and coffees. A small table had been pushed to the back, out of the way so that when you sat down you could comfortably stretch your legs. "Who knew we would ever get this luxury?" He looked around the room with his jaw dropped in awe. He had been locked away for over a week already and had lost likely forgotten how it felt to feel at home, in a room that had proper furniture.
"I'm so glad that we get to spend this time together even if it is only for ten minutes." I said, sighing at the thought that soon it would be over. Jake threw himself into the couch, sinking into the cushiony seat with a satisfying groan of pleasure.
"This is amazing." He breathed, suddenly looking up at me. "I can't believe you used both your wishes on me. You know you didn't need to do that!" I shooed his comments with my hand as I made my way over to him and sat beside him on the couch. He threw his arm around my shoulders.
"They were both for us. I couldn't see you tied up like that any more. I missed you." I sighed, being brutally honest from the start.
"You are incredible." Jake said, shaking his head. "I've said it once and I'll say it again. For someone who has only just found all this stuff out, you're so selfless." He let out a soft smile.
"It's nothing, honestly. I mean none of us wanted this, why should I act like I'm the only one?" I shrugged. "I mean everyone deals with things differently but that's just my way." He sighed like he was now rethinking his outlook, looking around the room once more.
"Who knew I'd miss something so stupid?" He said as his eyes trailed the room, taking in every detail. "Chairs and tables, light switches, a couch." He moves his arm away from me as he stood up, walking over to trail the objects with his fingers.
"I don't blame you." I stood up and walked along beside him. "You've been locked up for a while and you have no luxuries in a cell." I could see his body tense as he thought about his kidnapping and being held captive. "W-when did you find out you had your power?" I tried to take away from his thoughts so he didn't make himself too angry. He relaxed for a second, his back muscles relaxing for a second before I realised it was because he was slumping down. This was going to be a bad story. "If you don't want to say, that's fine. Sorry. I bet it's quite personal..." I added to make him feel like he wasn't under pressure. He turned to me and let out a small appreciative smile. My heart sped slightly, seeing him vulnerable like this yet offering his perfect Colgate smile at me.
"It's fine." He soothed. "Its a difficult story but I think you deserve to know... after all you've been so honest with me." He slumped back on the couch and I felt the need to do the same. I rested my hands between my knees as I listened to him, paying attention. "I was out with my friend" he bit his lips together for a moment, trying to compose himself. "We'd been drinking but he thought he could still drive. Cut a long story short, a deer ran out in the road and he swerved to avoid it, the car flipped. I was wearing my seatbelt, he wasn't. He shot out of the car, the car rolled and landed on him. I clambered out of the wreckage and tried to find him. When I eventually did, my only reaction was to try and lift the car. Luckily others were around and they called for the emergency services." He was staring down at the floor, barely blinking, as he reminisced. "I looked down at him there and just felt overwhelming sadness and anger, before I knew it, I'd flipped the car back onto it's wheels and freed him. The emergency services said it must have been adrenaline and that I saved his life." I shuffled closer to him and put my arm around his shoulders, giving him a comforting squeeze.
"You saved his life. That's amazing!" I tried to bring out the positive, seeing just how badly this affected him.
"I guess. It just reminds me of a really bad time in my life." He shrugged. "And I fucking ended up here." He gestured around the room, but I knew he meant the whole building.
"But then I got to meet you, so I'm calling it a good thing." I smiled softly at him, to which he let out a breathy laugh. He stood up once again and turned his back to me for a second as he looked up to the sky.
"Are you always this cheery?" He asked, suddenly turning to me with his normal flirty grin. This made me smile, reminding me of the times he met me at the cell bars with the grin plastered on his face.
"Only around you." I shrugged honestly. For a moment, we just looked at each other - as if cats had our tongues. He took a few steps towards me and put his hands on my shoulders as his eyes drunk me in properly for the first time.
"You're something else." He smirked as he shook his head in disbelief.
"You're not so bad yourself..." I said quickly, offering a smirk of my own. Before I knew it, our bodies were getting closer as Jake wrapped his arms around my body. My breathing hitched excitedly as I imagined what was going to come of this moment. Would Jake and I become even closer? I watched as his lips moved closer to mine, and instinctively I did the same. Before I knew what was happening, we were kissing. He felt amazing under my touch, his plump lips pressing on mine in a fit of passion. Everything was going so well until his eyes suddenly widened and he pulled away from me quickly, leaving me feeling vulnerable.
