Chapter Four (Part One)
The flight to Michigan was a smooth one. Looking out the window at the clear blue skies designed with pockets of puffy white clouds, Emma allowed herself get sucked in to the beauty around her. She had always loved it in the skies. There was something about the height that made her feel powerful. Being up there calmed her nerves in unexplainable ways. It felt like a getaway from the ground beneath. A safe heaven where she didn't have to bother about any of the problems the world had. As she stared out at the different shapes formed by the moving clouds, her otherwise blank mind settled on an image in the case file she had received from Bone the previous day – a shot of the dead Rebecca Riley. She shook her head in a bid to dismiss the image. It didn't work. She could pretend with everyone else but she certainly couldn't lie to herself. It made her happy to see Rebecca Riley dead.
If Emma had a choice, she would have opted out of the case. Apart from not caring much for her former classmate, Rebecca unearthed memories she had fought so hard to forget. Many years had passed since her encounter with Miss. Riley and her pre-adolescent crew but the effect it had on her had not changed the slightest bit.
"Will the memories away, Emma. They bring nothing but hurt."
When she first read the report in the case file, the part of her she referred to as the FBI persona kicked in, eager to jump into the field, find the murderer and bring him to justice. However, when her eyes settled on the name of the victim, the only thing that was left of her initial desire was indifference. Even as a child, Rebecca Riley was as mean as a monster. It was no surprise that someone would want her dead and if it were left to her angry judgement, it was the perfect case of good riddance to bad rubbish. Rebecca Riley sure deserved what she got.
"I can't believe you just said that, Emma! No one deserves to be murdered."
She knew her thoughts were right. Embarrassment washed over her as she scolded herself for secretly applauding a murderer. Regardless of his reasons or the way she felt about Rebecca, his acts were despicable and he needed to be brought to justice.
