Chapter 2: The Journey Begins
Soundtrack: Old Friends from "The Hobbit"
Rey woke up early the next morning and quickly packed her bag, before changing from her nightgown into a blue dress.
Rey came into the sitting room where the two brothers gathered by the hearth. "I'm ready to go on an adventure," she told them.
Kylo smiled at her.
"So... is there some kind of contract that I have to sign before we leave?" she asked.
"Uh...yes here you go," Hux said handing her a paper.
Rey skimmed the long paper. It was a typical contract of commitment, that any gold obtained would be split equally between them and that they were not responsible for any injuries that she might receive during the journey.
"There's a chance I won't come back," she said, realization striking her as she read the part of the contract that dealt with funeral arrangements.
The brothers nodded grimly "I'm afraid there is," the oldest said.
Rey nodded. "Some causes are worth dying for," she said.
Hux nodded now feeling bad that he had no intonations of helping her find her family.
"Yes," Kylo agreed. "And if by my life I can protect you, I will."
Rey looked at him, surprised. Then she offered him a small smile, feeling better knowing that he would protect her, she had never been in the wilds of Middle Earth, she had spent her whole life in the safety of the Shire and though she would never admit to the two brothers, she was a little nervous about leaving.
Rey signed the contract and passed it to Hux.
"Thank you," Hux said taking the parchment.
She nodded. "Should we set out?"
Both dwarves nodded and they all set out.
As they reached the edge of the Shire, Rey looked back. "I'll miss it," she said.
"I understand...I miss my home too," Kylo replied. "Erebor, The Lonely Mountain."
"But if we don't go, there won't be a home to come back to," Hux pointed out looking sharply at his brother.
"I know," he answered. Then he looked at Rey. "What truly makes a home is when you're with the ones you love...that's what I miss most, my mother. At least I have my brother here with me so it feels like I have a part of my home with me."
Rey smiled slightly.
"Just imagine if you can find your family, then you'll finally have a true home," Kylo told her.
She nodded. "You're right, thank you both for agreeing to help me."
Hux grumbled under his breath then spoke aloud. "That is if we don't die."
"Don't mind Hux, he's just grumpy because we haven't had any breakfast yet," said Kylo.
Rey smiled. "Don't worry, I brought some muffins," she said handing one to each of them.
Hux grumbled "I don't get grumpy without breakfast, you do."
"You're grumpy now," Kylo pointed out.
"Because of you, not the breakfast. It's very good by the way Rey."
"Thank you," she replied.
"Me?" Kylo asked. "What did I do?"
"Well, where do I begin on the long list?" Hux asked himself.
"Do you two always fight this much?" Rey asked.
"No," Hux replied simply.
"Good, because if you do this would be a very long journey," Rey answered.
Kylo nodded.
Two hours later...
Rey stopped walking and stood in the middle of the path.
"Are you alright?" Kylo asked her.
She nodded. "I'm getting breakfast," she answered.
Hux's brow creased. "But we've already had breakfast."
"Yes... but we haven't had second breakfast yet," she answered.
"Second breakfast?" Hux echoed.
Kylo smiled. "Second breakfast, what have we been missing our whole lives?"
Hux shook his head but didn't dismiss the idea.
"Wait until I tell Bumbur about this," said Kylo.
Rey smiled and gave them both an apple.
"I could get used to this," said Kylo, taking a bite of his apple.
