White Queen's Melancholy (Part 1)
"So sad, her eyes
Smiling, dark eyes
So sad her eyes
As it began"
The divided kingdoms pushed each other to the edge.
Specially the three warring kingdoms where humans thrived, searching for power, resources and technology.
Odeon, Montreal and Milton Keynes are the main warring kingdoms, in search for power over the thrones.
There is a huge white castle, surrounded by tall limestone walls.
The kingdom of Milton Keynes is isolated from the rest of the world. In fear of corrupting the people of bad deeds and deadly diseases, they secluded themselves. Over the walls are rich and thick forest in which both resources like boar and cow meat, vegetables and medicinal plants thrived. Only the high priests, barters and knights are allowed to leave its walls.
The people within the walls are naive of the dangers of the land. Milton Keynes is said to be the most peaceful among the warring kingdoms.
One autumn of the winter solstice, where the leaves were the color of sunset and the wind is carrying the chilly wind of the north ice barrens. A flock of birds were circling the outside walls and the sky was blue and the sun was high.
A small wooden basket was found. Inside of it is weeping infant. It was found unguarded in the gates of Milton Keynes.
The guards were in awe and in shock.
The vicious animals from the outskirts of Milton gathered around in the edge of the forest. A wolf huffed from a distance, a fox has seen chilling in a tree branch and birds were circling above.
And the innocent wailing infant wasn't even fazed nor hurt. The baby has snow white hair and skin pale as ice. Her full cherry red lips were shivering with cold.
The high priests took the baby to Phoebe, the old king of Milton Keynes.
Upon embracing the baby into his arms, the stark difference against his olive skin and the baby's pale skin left Phoebe breathless. Upon hearing the stories on how this baby was obtained, he do believe that the infant was left by the gods to seer over the kingdom, as old memories flashed behind his weary eyes.
"I will take this child under my wing" King Phoebe chided.
The high priests greatly objected King Phoebe's idea.
"That infant should be brought somewhere else! She might be a harbor of plague within these walls!"
One of the high priest named Sheffield objected. His voice ringed within the chamber halls. Other high priests agreed with him.
But King Phoebe glared him intently.
"How dare you speak and oppose me?
This child needs a proper shelter just like everyone of us."
The baby cooed into his arms.
"Thread lightly my leige. Your generosity might be your greatest assest but it is also your greatest weakness.
I only wish for your safety."
With that, the six high priests stormed outside leaving the king and the baby behind. A loud thud echoed within the throne room as the huge gilded door closed.
The king sat down to his cold marble throne, as memories flashed before his very eyes.
8 years ago, King Phoebe's wife, a fairy, died while giving birth. Her long flowy blond hair tangled as Phoebe caressed her sweaty forehead. He clasped her hand for support but her bright blue eyes darkened. A soft whimper was heard upon her last breath. The child was alive but the little joy left behind was soon to be engulped with doom.
His only child died a few days after because of some unknown circumstances.
King Phoebe's heart was striken with bitter sadness. He remebered his father, when he was just a young boy, he would tell him stories before going to bed. The untold stories of the great fae gods who used to roam the land, whose power was enough to kill them with a slight of a hand. He remembered diligently one tale his father told him when he was bitten by a non poisonous snake when he was on the garden, mending the flowers.
"Brian, the god of knowledge and compassion. He looks over the animals and the forest and he possesses great knowledge of the moon, the sun and the sky."
Phoebe tucked himself comfortably under the sheets as one of the chamber maids doused the fireplace.
"Does he look over the humans too? Where is he?"
Phoebe's father only responded with a smile.
"He believes to be in the deepest part of the forest. Looking over his creations. It is just a story my child. Your great grandfather used to tell me that story when I'm around your age."
But for young Phoebe, it wasn't just a story. He used to cut down trees to make way for new buildings and some other resources, he used to over work his slaves to widen his kingdom but the greatest sin he did was he did partake in Odeon's dark secrets in exchange of obtaining advanced technology since his people cannot go out freely.
What a dumbfounded idea it was.
To make Milton Keynes a fortress and a prison.
He once dreamed of venturing out. Only from the books he saw what oceans were or what other cities looks like.
He thought to himself that the gods of the old kingdom cursed his life - forever to be alone. He promised from that very day that he will never hurt anyone and will help everyone who is in need. In memory of his great wife, he hired fairies to his ranks and provided shelter to mistreated fairies rescued upon escaping from Odeon and he also cut every ties he had with that kingdom.
Valentin Barbara, the Baroness of Odeon sent him a letter to reconsider his actions but he burned down the letter to the ground.
Sheffield, his right hand man and the highest bishop in the land of Milton oppossed his action for his fear that cutting ties with Odeon might result to Milton's downfall since Odeon was the main source of barter change in the land of Rhye and their stock gold might plummet but none of them mattered.
He knew deep inside that Valentin wasn't as good as she shows she was.
There is a great enigma sorrounding her presence.
No, the whole Odeon itself is surrounded by some unknown force, some dark enigma.
He cannot point it out.
But none of it mattered since his wife and his son was gone and the only thing left was his people.
He will never let his people down, even until his last breath.
In desperate need, on one summer night, where the knights were preparing for a small venture towards the east kingdom of the ogres, Bokudan.
King Phoebe sneaked out behind the castle's defences, we went through a secret passage beneath the walls. He brought a black silk garb and a leather sack with him. He should be back before dawn or else the kingdom will fall into one great panic.
He wouldn't allow such thing to happen. As a strict rule of the kingdom, not even the king is allowed to venture outside the walls but Phoebe in desperate need of help, he ventured alone for the very first time -
He didn't even know what to expect.
As the night grows darker and darker.
The full moon was his only guide.
It doesnt really help since the forest gets thicker and thicker. Moss covered the thick roots of the trees and the foliage above sways as the wind blew hard.
The incessant cricking made him jump for every now and then. He heard a wolf howl from a distance.
"Bloody hell. Either I am going to be a feast for the beasts for tonight or be forever lost in this forest"
He chuckled.
It was getting cold so he wrapped himself inside his cloak. He knew that the path he took wasn't a path usually taken or never at all. It was muddy, damp, foggy and was surely cold. It sent shivers down his spine.
Unsure on for how long his been taking this path. He held his breath hard. It was really getting cold and the silence was deafening. Surely, the crickets nor the wolves stopped making noise but -
A strong cold wind came to his direction.
His breath became foggy with cold and a strange pressure was felt around the forest. It was like the trees stopped swaying even though the wind blew hard.
The pressure made a ringing sensation against his ears.
It felt like something was pushing him down.
Until strange sounds reverbrated around. Strange voices, whispering, shouting, whimpering, laughing - all at the same time.
Phoebe sank down to his knees and pressed his hands to his ears.
I think I'm going slightly mad.
It all went into a halt.
Carefully, he opened his eyes.
He sank down further to the ground. There were no single trees in sight but he saw vast green fields, filled with blue floating wisps.
Not from afar, he saw a river, not any ordinary river but it flows like thousand shards of diamonds.
It was sorrounded by animals of all kind, a fox, a giraffe, a huge grey wolf, a tiger, slithering snakes and a herd of cow.
There were also several voltures circling over head.
"I've been expecting you."
A soft voice chided in.
He was lean and tall with a shock of dark brown curly hair that falls right into his shoulders. He had this extravagant white garb behind him that falls right into his knees.
He also had this sophisticated ruffled dress with black stripes. He was holding this red stringed intrument which he believe was a guitar.
He added
"I apologize for that. How rude of me, I haven't introduced myself."
With a snap of his fingers, the guitar changed into a sleek silver spear tipped by a glowing red crystal.
He speaks elegantly. He kneeled down and placed the spear beside him. He picked up an animal from his feet that looks like a huge racoon. He stroked its fur with great subtle.
He smiled at Phoebe.
"You can call me Brian and this is my domain." he waved his free hand.
"I've been waiting for you, actually"
Phoebe pointed at himself
"Me?"
Brian chuckled. "You haughty humans are so complicated. I am greatly amused"
He placed the furry animal down and went up to his full height clearly towering over him.
"State your issue lad."
"Are you.. Are you the fae god?"
Phoebe asked as his knees trembled with fear. Did he know he was looking for him?
"You can say but we originally owned these lands but I am concerned that we are not anymore."
He sighed through his nose as Phoebe stared with wide eyes.
He continued as he dramatically raised his hands.
"Look. I will help you but on one condition. I -"
Phoebe raised his hand stopping Brian on his tracks "Hold it! You know why I am here?"
"Ofcourse, I know everything human." he sighed again "The famine, the conflicts between the races and your problem in your kingdom. You seek wisdom and assistance isn't it?"
"Yes" was the only thing Phoebe managed to utter.
"Unfortunately, there is one thing I cannot comprehend - the misunderstanding between the races. I hope I can mend it someday. Or else Freddie would bite my head off, so maybe a little sacrifice on my side will suffice"
He added "And be wary of the strange dark force brewing, an undecifered enigma the west kimgdom is, so be wary"
"Odeon?"
"Yes. I will help you rule your land but in one condition -"
Phobe gulped.
"You will never hurt a single living creature in your land."
Phoebe was only starting to open his mouth when he was stopped by Brian.
"It wasn't your vow to fulfill."
"What do you mean?"
But Brian only smiled.
"Freddie you insolent fool. You left so much mess on your doorstep."
Freddie?
With a wave of Brian's hand, the blue wisps around the field started to flock around him.
"You shouldn't be here at the first place. I do believe in your race, help me place the gap between so we can have total understanding -"
With a sudden jolt, Phoebe woke up in his sleeping chamber with his cloak still on.
He woke up with beads of sweat on his forehead, his heart beating really fast.
Was he dreaming? No.
The last words of Brian confused him.
How was he going to help him?
Understanding between what?
Those were the secrets he kept for 8 long years.
He knew the moment they took the mysterious child inside their walls, it was the start. The vow to never hurt any living creature wasn't his vow -
It was the vow of this child.
This being was his and not from anyone else.
She wasn't a fairy, a human nor a fae.
Phoebe adopted the mysterious child and has taken care of it ever since.
And her name is Amelia.
In the near future, she will be known as the compassionate ruler of Milton Keynes
-
The White Queen.
To be continued.
