Chapter five

Hayli was waiting, exhausted, in the Town Square. She was so tired; Hayli had stayed up late, waiting for everyone to fall asleep. On the verge of passing out, Hayli checked the digital watch on her left wrist. 11:57pm. She sighed, and was about to collapse when she heard the dull thudding of feet coming from the path leading out of town. Straining her eyes, Hayli could just see two people running down the road. The cloud that was covering the moon passed, and the Town square was filled with silvery light. Was it Jay? If so, who was that with him?
"Jay?" Hayli called out weakly. Funnily enough, the moonlight reflected in one of the boys' eyes, making them shine gold.
"Jay!" She exclaimed--this time louder--and stumbled over towards the boys.

Dean was pounding after Jay into the Town Square when he heard a faint voice. Someone was calling for Jay. Dean motioned to his best friend, catching his attention.
"Someone over there's calling for you! It sounded like a girl." He said loudly. Jay's breath hitched, and ran even faster towards the Square, leaving Dean to trail in his dust. Jay then stopped in the middle of Town Square, amber eyes shining in the moonlight. Then, out of the shadows, a teenage girl came into view. She had dark blonde waves, and eyes that were almost as dark as the blue-black sky above them. As Jay watched, he noticed that the girl was almost tripping and falling over her own feet, looking as though she would faint.
"Jay, is that you?" She asked quietly, finally reaching him. Dean had at last made it to the aid of his friend. The girl's eyes fluttered, and she tripped, landing into Jay's arms.
"You were right. They have my mother. She's still... Alive..." The girl whispered before losing consciousness. Jay scooped her up, and turned around to head back the way he came. Dean ran up to him, but Jay didn't want to argue about such an important matter like someone's life. Dean looked as though he was about to say something, but Jay cut him off.
"She needs us, Dean. She needs me." Jay mumbled, brushing away the hair that had fallen on her face, speaking just loud enough for Dean to actually hear. Dean, however, wasn't looking for an argument.
"I know Jay... You know, I don't think I ever seen you act like that. Compassionate and caring, that is. I've seen you act heroic before." Dean said. "We should tell Keero. He may be angry that you snuck out, but since I was with you--and we both know I'm the responsible one of us--Keero won't be as mad at us. Not to mention you can't climb a window with a girl in your arms." Jay didn't deny any of it. He knew that they needed Keero's help, he knew that Dean was the responsible one, and he knew he wouldn't be able to sneak in through his bedroom window while carrying Hayli.

"Can I speak with you two please? Outside." Keero hissed. The two boys exchanged worried glances and followed Keero out of the dorm, which was currently occupied by the teenage girl, fast asleep. With one last glance back at the sleeping teen, Jay slowly trailed out of the room after Dean. Closing the door softy behind Jay, Dean turned to face the music with a sullen face. Jay braced for the worst, but to both of their surprise, Keero cracked a wide smile.
"I am so proud of you two!" Keero laughed, causing the boys to snap their heads up at him in shock.
"You two did something very brave. Instead of ignoring a desperate plea for help, you acted upon your instincts and brought the young lass back here. Trusting in your instincts is vital in the real world, as well as in each other, and you two displayed both of those key lessons. What compelled you two to do such a daring deed?" Keero enquired, obviously aiming the question at Dean. Jay fully expected Dean to say that it was just an act of Jay's own foolishness, but then thought better of it. He's my best friend, he wouldn't rat me out like that! Jay thought. Dean stepped forward, took a deep breath and began the story.
"Well, I was about to go back to my dorm, when I realised that I haven't seen Jay since dinner. So I went to his dorm and found the window open. So I decided to wait until he came back. About three hours later, I caught him climbing in through the window. I tried to tell him off when his phone went off. Within a few minutes, we were running into the local village's Town Square. And the next thing we know Jay's picked up the 'young lass' and, this is going to sound crazy, but his personality kinda changed." Dean took a deep breath, looking as though he had said a lot, which, in Jay's perspective, he had.
"Oh? How so?" Keero enquired, looking much more than vaguely intrigued.
"His whole demeanour changed. He suddenly became, well, gentle. It's the best way I can describe how he acted..." Dean mumbled, then burst out with something very unexpected.
"Actually, if it weren't for Jay's uncanny instinct to help out 'damsels in distress' as he likes to call them," Dean glances at Jay. As does Keero. Jay shrugged
"Then none of us, including her," Dean points in the general direction of the door. "Would be here right now. If anyone is to be rewarded, it is him." Dean finished, folding his arms in front of his chest. Jay and Keero stared at Dean, who had turned around and walked down the empty corridor, leaving them quite alone.
