The Beginning
"I hate television. It gives me headaches. You know, I heard there's so many magnetic waves traveling through the air because of TV and telephones, that we're losing, like ten times as many brain cells as we're supposed to. Like, all the molecules in our heads are all unstable: All the companies know about it but they're not doing anything about it. It's, like, a big conspiracy." Katie said as she and her friend were watching television in her room. Her friend Becca sighed.
"You can pick something. I don't care." Katie grabbed the remote and shut off the tv. "You have any idea how many electro-rays are traveling through our head every second?" Becca smirked and hopped on her bed. "I got a better one. Have you heard about this videotape that kills you when you watch it?" She asked. "What kind of tape?" Katie asked as she sat up. "A tape, a regular tape. People rent it, I don't know. You start to play it, and it's, like, somebody's nightmare. Then suddenly, this woman comes on. Smiling at you, right?
Seeing you through the screen... and as soon as it's over... your phone rings. Someone knows you've watched it. And what they say is... "You will die in seven days" and exactly seven days later..." Becca said. "Who told you that?" Katie asked, sounding disturbed. "Somebody from Revere. I don't..." "who told you?" Katie raised her voice a little, and Becca furrowed her eyebrows. "What's your problem?" There was another pause. "I've watched it." Katie's eyes darted around the room nervously, and Becca sighed.
"It's a story, Katie." Katie's voice became more urgent. "No, me and Josh, we saw it last weekend." She admitted. "I thought you were with your parents." Becca said. "I wanted to tell you-" Becca smiled. "You were with Josh all weekend?" Katie smiled a little too. "Some of his friends got this place up in the mountains. They were trying to record a football game. I guess the reception was so bad..." "What are you talking about?" Becca asked. "Listen to me!" Katie shouted. "When we played the tape, the game wasn't there. It was..." she trailed off.
"What? Wh-What was it?" Becca asked. "It was something else. We thought it was some kind of sick joke... and then the phone rang." Becca's eyes widened slightly. "It was a week ago... one week ago tonight." Becca chuckled nervously. "You're just trying to scare me." She turned away for a moment, then turned back, and Katie began gagging, causing her to look at her with concern. Katie grabbed at her throat, then laid down on Becca's lap. "Oh, my God, Katie! Are you okay?" Becca asked. Katie then smiled. "You freak!" Becca shoved her off the bed, then threw a pillow at her. "You totally fell for it!" Katie said. "No." Becca said. "So... did you guys, you know, do anything?" Becca asked teasingly. Katie looked rather confused by the question. "Like what?" Becca smirked.
"Oh, my God, you totally did! Yo ho! Tell me now!" Becca threw a pillow at her again. They continued to throw pillows at each other, until suddenly the phone rang. They paused, and Katie looked over at her clock, then back at Becca worriedly. Becca glanced at her. "There really is a tape?" They slowly walked down the stairs to where the phone was ringing. They paused, Katie to afraid to answer it as it continued to ring. Becca sighed, then walked over. "This is so lame."
Katie wanted to stop her, but Becca picked up and answered the phone. "Embrey residence." Becca paused, and turned to Katie who looked at her fearfully as she slowly handed her the phone. Katie nervously took it from her and held it to her ear. "Hello?" She asked, then was relieved to hear her mother's voice. "Hi, mom." Katie sighed angrily as she passed her friend. "Yeah, that was Becca." Katie said. "My mom says hi. She's glad you're here." "Ask her where she keeps the Vicodin." Becca said before walking away. "Yeah, we're about to go to sleep. Okay. Yeah, I will. Okay! Okay, yeah, yeah, I will."
Katie said as she opened the fridge. "No, I won't." Katie poured herself a glass of lemonade. "Bye, Mom." As she's about to take a sip of her lemonade and leave the room, the tv in the next room turns on to static. Katie stopped in her tracks, and slowly glanced over at the tv. Katie peered into the room and looked around. "Becca, quit being a bitch. Where's the remote?" Katie looked down and grabbed it, then shut off the tv, but once she turned around, the tv turned back on to static. She stared at it fearfully for a long moment. "Becca, quit it!"
She quickly ran over to the television, then quickly went behind it and unplugged it, and the tv finally shut off. Katie gasped and quickly turned around when she heard something from her kitchen. She slowly walked into the kitchen to see the fridge opening. She ran over to it and shut it quickly. She began shivering in fear, whimpering slightly. She looked down the hallway, then looked up the stairs. "Becca can you hear me?" She speed walked up the steps, and saw water leaking out from the bedroom door, leaving puddles on the floor. She slowly walked down the hall, and her feet touched the puddles. She paused fearfully at the door, hesitating to open it, then suddenly grabbed the doorknob. She quickly opened her door, and a well from a tv was on and Katie screamed.
