Chapter 15
Wolf is standing near the pool of the blood and saliva near the broken window. My heart is racing in my chest, I have seen one too many people get ripped apart by these things. If I can even call them things. They are what nightmares are made out of.
Everything about them is monstrous, if I can even use that term, a monster might be too nice of a word. More like hellish, possessed creature would be more like it. Monsters, you can see them, shoot them, and they are dead. These things, they need to be riddled with bullets before they stop moving.
A head shot works on the slow ones, and the Runners, but these things, you pretty much have to keep shooting until their head is just mush, they stop at nothing, and I mean nothing, to kill you, and then everyone you love.
Wolf throws a piece of shattered glass into the building. It seems like forever until I hear it crash to the floor. The echo of it reaches my ears and my heart pounds against my chest. That is definitely enough noise to alert this hellish creature.
Celeste is above him on the stairs, she is as stiff as a statue, the only thing that moves is her long, wavy, silk like blonde hair.
My heart jumps up into my throat as Wolf by passes the blood and saliva on the ground and peaks his head into the window. The saliva on the ground is bubbling in the blood, and its stench is just as wretched as the creature itself.
I have to stop myself from screaming out to him. I don't want to see his head get ripped off. I really, really do not want to see that.
Celeste keeps her gun locked and ready to go, it's like she is use to this while I am over here freaking out. I just, I can't deal with this, I couldn't deal with it the last time I ran into one of these things. I ran away. I ran and ran until I couldn't run no more. They make my skin crawl so much.
Wolf drops in another piece of glass, and I have to hold in another screech for him to stop it. The Runners I can deal with, the slow ones, not a problem, a level 3, not so much. Wolf takes a step back, and I lunge forward, Wolf sees me and stops in his tracks. I point behind him at the blood and saliva. He smiles and nods in understanding.
The one thing that really makes these hellish creatures so awful is that they leave saliva everywhere, and they spit it as well, once saliva is on the skin, you are as good as gone. It's like their form of biting. The slow ones turn us humans into brainless cannibals through bites and same with the Runners. The difference is, is that that these things don't just bite, I don't think they are capable of such a thing, they just tear, shred, and rip open anything and everything that moves before devouring.
Wolf waves over me and Celeste and puts his index finger up to his lips. Me and Celeste both look at each other, back at him and then nod. We do as he says, we both sneak over, I keep my eyes on the window for any movement. I mostly focus on the top, they are wall climbers, it's like they have spider grips on their hands and feet. They scale the walls like nothing, and their heads, oh god, they turn them 180 degrees. So when they are climbing the walls they can still see you if you are behind them. It's the most terrifying thing I had ever seen in my whole life when I seen it the first time, and then their screeches. They like a banshee. Their screech, I swear, can reach to miles away, there is no sound to compare it to, I had never heard of such a horrifically vile sound in my whole life. I'd much rather listen to nails on a chalkboard for the rest of my life than here one of their screeches ever again.
We all gather at the bottom of the fire escape, Wolf puts a firm hand on mine and Celeste's shoulders. Now that I am up close to her, I can actually see what she looks like, and she is a doll. Her face has no blemishes, and it's as if it was carved from stone. It's like she was plucked out of a fantasy novel and placed here in this world.
"How would you two feel about backing me up in there? Nari and her crew are getting flamethrowers, but I know they are going to be a hot minute, but I have to know if Preston and his men are in there."
"Neveah, keep your eyes focused straight forward, and Wolf, you go to Neveah, not me, when the time comes, I will be fine, but Neveah won't be if you aren't there. Do you understand?" Celeste's soft voice is just barely above a whisper.
"You really are psychic?" I ask.
"Your middle name starts with the letter M, your favourite colour is purple, your mother died of cancer when you were 8, and you had a very close bond to your brother. So close, I would say you two were like twins. Am I wrong on anything I have said?"
I swallow hard before nodding, she got everything right. "You're psychic. That's cool."
"I know, she did the same thing to me too when we first met." Wolf softly squeezes my shoulder as he chuckles. "Would we be good if we went in?"
"As long as Neveah keeps her eyes focused forward, we will be fine." Celeste's soft voice is just louder than the leaves rustling in the breeze.
Wolf looks at me, "You think you can focus your eyes straight?"
I nod as my heart hammers against my chest.
"I will."
Wolf lets go of mine and Celeste's shoulders, and cocks his hand gun. "Well then, let's fuckin' get this over with."
