Chapter 34
A/N: if anyone of you read my imagines book, you've probably already seen and know what the image above is, but for anyone who doesn't, this a piece of art I recently made. I'm finally starting to find my own style and figured why not start with my all time favorite hero? Hope you like it! (And if you're really interested, message me and I can share where to get it. Lol)
A large cloud of smoky purple and blue appears, and all I can think about is how much it looks like the one that appeared over New York during the attack. It makes my heart pound. He emerges from the cloud, which immediately disappears.
There's a buzzing like a familiar melody faintly echoing in the distance that makes my head hurt.
I brush it off as I get a good look at Thanos from my hiding place. "Oh my god. He looks like one of my gran's powdered prunes as a person."
"Powdered prunes?" Peter whispers with a confused look on his face.
"My gran used to cover prunes in powdered sugar to try to get me to eat them." I shrug and cringe at the memory. It's quiet for another moment as we watch him walk around. The humming keeps pushing its way back into my head.
"Oh yeah," Strange comments from the top of the ruined steps as he draws Thanos's attention. "You're much more of Thanos."
"I take it the Maw is dead." Thanos's deep voice rumbles, and I suddenly realize that must have been what creepy Squidward was called—Maw. "This day extracts a heavy toll. Still, he accomplished his mission."
"You may regret that." Strange retorts, and I silently pray to whoever's in control that he does. "He brought you face to face with the Master of the Mystic Arts."
The earth shakes as Thanos passes mine and Peter's hiding place. My heart calms as I feel my resolve harden. As much as the rest of them wouldn't agree, I'll do whatever it takes to ruin Thanos and save whatever half of the universe he intends to destroy. Especially if it means protecting my family—and Peter—I'd do anything.
I made my peace with dying the night of the car accident. Something in me knew I probably wasn't going to make it out of there, and I almost didn't. I just got lucky that a paramedic had the guts to come back for me—even if he died for it. Every day since, I've continue on for others, live on borrowed time, and know that it could change in an instant.
So if stopping this psychotic Titan requires blood, I'll give it.
Peter shifts next to me to watch Strange and Thanos down below. I bite my lip as my resolve wavers. Would he be all right if something happened to me?
Probably not, but I know that one day, he'd learn to heal. It would nearly kill him—and Dad, but I can't even begin to think about how he would take it.
I'm suddenly pulled from my thoughts as the planet around us changes—or at least is seems to. Something in the back of my mind says it's an illusion—a shift created in reality by one of the Stones. "Titan was like most planets." Thanos begins, but it's difficult to hear over the humming as the Reality Stone glows bright red. "Too many mouths, not enough to go around. And when we faced extinction. I offered a solution.
"Genocide." Strange echoes my own thoughts.
Thanos nods and continues, "But random, dispassionate, fair to rich and poor alike." He pauses and looks down, "They called me a madman."
"Wonder why." I mumble under my breath.
"And what I predicted came to pass." The illusion fades away and takes most of the humming down with it.
"Congratulations, you're a prophet."
"I'm a survivor." Thanos quickly replies.
"Who wants to murder trillions."
"With all six stones, I could simply snap my fingers. They would all cease to exist. I call that mercy."
"He's completely insane." I whisper to Peter.
"Yeah, and he think he's justified." He replies back with worry in his voice.
"Which only make him that more dangerous." I grimace and feel my nerves fraying as they twist into intricate knots.
"And then what?" Strange asks as he steps down.
"I'd finally rest, and watch the sunrise on a grateful universe." He pauses for a moment, "The hardest choices require the strongest wills."
I want to throw up because for the first and only time, I agree with him on the latter comment. All my doubts from earlier seem to slowly wash away like sand with the tide. It won't be easy, but we have to do whatever it takes—no matter how much it will inevitably hurt the ones we love most.
My hand finds Peter's and squeezes it. "I know I told you this before, but no matter what happens, I love you. Always have and always will."
"I know," he replies with a gentle voice, "and I love you too."
We both ready ourselves as Strange starts to challenge Thanos by saying as he conjures his glowing shield things, "I think you'll find our will equal to yours."
"Ours?" Thanos questions, and his answer comes in a giant piece of rubble being launched towards him by my Dad, who crushes him underneath it.
"Piece of cake. Huh, Quill?" He questions. Although, I all ready know that didn't do it. The humming continuing in my head and the pit in my stomach scream otherwise.
"Yeah, if your goal was to piss him off." Quill replies as he activates his mask and flies next to Dad toward the spot where Thanos was.
The debris radiates out in a haze of purple. Thanos uses the Reality Stone to shift the shards into hundreds of bat-like creatures that chase after Dad. He doesn't get a chance to do anything else as Peter launches a web that covers the Titan's eyes as the former swings in to kick him in the face.
Drax quickly follows with a blade slicing across the back of the prune's legs, and I come in with my shadows to bind his feet and restrict his arms as Drax, Strange, and I fight as a team.
Somehow, Thanos still manages to block most of the blows. I barely manage to slide under his arm, but Drax isn't so lucky as he gets launched off his feet. Strange and I continue the fight. I launch myself up and out of his reach as Quill arrives to attach a bomb to the back of Thanos before falling back into one of Strange's portals.
I stand back and try to aid Strange's cloaks to keep Thanos's fist open, which keeps the Infinity Stones from activating. It's not easy with the humming roaring in my ears.
"Magic." Peter calls as he launches through one a portal to punch Thanos. "More magic. Magic with a kick." He makes a comment each time he leaps out, "Magic with a—" This time, he's cut off my Thanos's hand around his throat.
I grit my teeth and run up to Thanos. "Insect." He seethes as the ground cracks under Peter.
"Actually," I respond as my legs wrap around his throats and blades of shadow form in my hands, which I immediately bury in the space between Thanos's armor, "he's an arachnid, idiot."
Thanos grumbles as he throws Peter off before grabbing me to do the same. "You." He yells through gritted teeth as he tears Strange's cloak from his hand and cocks his head while watching me, "Now, you are something special. Aren't you?"
My lungs burn and mind reels as his hand wraps around my throat. The humming is worse than before. It's like a hundred voice screaming in my head. Thanos chuckles,"Interesting. They're singing for you. Unusual that they would call out to—"
"Get away from her." Dad yells and blasts Thanos enough to knock him off balance. I push myself to my feet and run as far away as possible. Immediately, Dad sends a series of rockets directly at Thanos the moment I'm clear of the blast radius.
My knees buckle under me as I still struggle for breath. Peter quickly rushes over to me, peppering me with questions. I barely manage to reassure him before looking to Strange amidst the chaos, "Why can I hear them?" I ask as he watches me with a somber, but perplexed look.
"I don't know, but right now we have bigger things to worry about." He replies, and I follow his gaze to see Thanos using the flames from my Dad's bombs against him.
"C'mon, let's move." I manage with a raspy voice and push myself to my feet. Peter nods, and we both move in tandem as he webs Thanos's gauntleted arm as I knock his feet off balance. He uses his arm to swat Peter aside, and I roll out of the way as a ship comes barreling towards the big prune.
It crashes and drags him meters through the rubble and rough terrain of the planet. I quickly rush over to Peter and help him up. "No time to waste." I remind him as Peter picks me up and swings us over to where Thanos is battling a blue woman with metal parts.
He knocks her off her feet as we arrive, and Strange jumps in, using his magic to create rope like structures that wrap around the gauntlet and hold Thanos's hand in place. Drax slides in and kicks the back of Thanos's knees; mean while, Quill launches one of his magnet bombs to hold the other arm down.
Peter swings in, shooting a web across Thanos's chest to help hold him in place. I move to help Dad take the gauntlet off, but the moment I near it, the Stones begin to glow and screech louder in my head. I grit my teeth despite the pain and keep tugging at it.
Strange opens a portal that drops Mantis directly onto Thanos's shoulders. We all groan and struggle to keep the titan in place as she works to put him to sleep. A split second later, we feel a lot of the strain ease up. "Is he under?" Dad asks, and Mantis barely nods throughout he strain. "Don't let up."
"Be quick. He is very strong." She cries out, clearly struggling to maintain her hold.
I collapse as my fingers slip from the gauntlet and the voices of the Stones increases in my head. "Parker, help! Get over here." Dad shouts, which brings Peter running over to take my place in trying to pry the gauntlet off the titan's hand.. "You okay, bug?"
"They're screaming." I manage to reply through gritted teeth and cover my ears, even though it does nothing to dull it. It makes my head spin as I get to my feet. Something in the words they're screaming at me that I don't understand, I know that I have to stop this—that the Stones want me to help.
It's almost as if they recognize me. As if they know me enough to ask for my help.
"It has to be me." I whisper to myself as I join Peter and my Dad, and inexplicably, the screaming seems to die down as I do so. "Okay, let's do this before he wakes back up."
"Couldn't agree more." Dad replies, even though he sounds worried about the episode I just had. My fingers grip the slightly flared edge of the gauntlet as I give my Dad a nod and brace pull with every ounce of strength I have.
"We gotta open his fingers to get it off." Peter says as he continues to struggle.
"On it." I say and try to use shadows to pry his fingers open as Quill lands in front of us. "Quill, we could use some help here."
He ignores me as he seems lost in his own world. "I thought you'd be harder to catch." He chuckles and looks to Dad, "For the record, this was my plan."
"That doesn't matter right now. So get over here and help us get this thing off!" I shout at him, but he holds up a hand to shush me as he approaches Thanos with a taunting grin. "Is he serious?"
"You're not so strong now, huh?" Quill continues to taunt and tease the subdued Titan. It's not until he continues that I start to realize what he's after. "Where is Gamora?"
Thanos seems to stir under Mantis's control and groans out, "My Gamora." A shiver runs down my spine. I knew the titan was twisted enough to create monstrous people and call them his children, but from what I heard, Gamora was never truly his.
"No, that's crap." Quill shouts, and I can his body language shifting with every second. "Where is Gamora?"
"He's in anguish." Mantis states as her face scrunches up in confusion and strain.
My gut twists like that momentary knowledge that something bad is about to happen. I turn my focus back to Thanos's slowly opening fist. "Almost there." I shout and feel a sliver of hope pulling through.
"He—he mourns." Mantis cries out, and suddenly, all hope is obliterated as the air seems to shift. I don't even have all the pieces and can still see the puzzle coming together.
"What does this monster have to mourn?" Drax questions through the strain of trying to help keep Thanos in place.
"Gamora," The blue lady, Nebula, I think I heard someone call her during the fight, states.
"Pull harder." I tell Dad and Peter.
Meanwhile, Nebula begins to explain to the others, "He took her to Vormir. He came back with the Soul Stone." She pauses as the words hang in the stale, hot air. "But she didn't."
Dad's helmet lowers, and he shouts at Quill as he keeps pulling. "Okay, Quill. You gotta cool it right now. You understand?" The gauntlet finally begins to start shifting after what's felt like hours of pulling at it. "Don't, don't. Don't engage. We've almost got this off."
Quill doesn't hear him. And I know that the humming in my ears is likely nothing compared to the sound of him hearing his own heart beat as the anger and grief mix and boil over. "Tell me she's lying." He states and raises his voice after a second of silence. "Tell me you didn't do it!"
Thanos's face tightens as he continues to fight Mantis's control and slowly spits out the words, "I had to."
Crap.
Tears begin to brim in Quill's eyes, and the gauntlet shifts even further. "No, you didn't." He takes a step back, shaking his head. "No, you didn't."
I feel my muscles aching and trembling from the pain, but I keep pulling as I shout to him, "Quill, I know it hurts, but you have to—"
He doesn't hear it.
Instead, he reels back and hits the Titan's face.
Once.
Twice.
Mantis's hands are hit in the second blow and slip from their place.
Three times.
Dad lets go as he shouts and forces Quill to stop.
Peter and I feel the gauntlet slip another fraction. His voice echoes in a hopeful cheer as he shouts, "It's coming. It's coming! We got it, we got it!"
Thanos reels his head back to knock Mantis off. His fingers wrap around the edge of the gauntlet that hadn't been entirely freed as he knock Peter away. The titan lifts me by my hood and tosses me like a frisbee away from him.
I try to steady myself, but it's hard when you're spinning through the air.
Luckily, a pair of arms wrap around me and pull me close to a chest. A second later, I feel us come to a skidding stop. "You okay?" Peter asks me as he still holds me close to his chest.
"Seen better days. You?"
"I'll manage." He shakily replies as he helps get both of us to our feet.
I glance back towards the fight to see Thanos activating the Power Stone. Debris rains down near the rest of the team, and I follow the trail to see the planet's moon not far behind.
"Go help them. I've got an idea." I tell Peter, not waiting for a reply as I shift into shadow and head directly for Thanos.
Strange beats me there, and I stand behind him. "I need a distraction."
"Kind of busy fighting a Titan at the moment." He counters, which makes my blood boil in my veins.
"Like I'm playing tea party?" I snap, "I have a plan, but I need someone to draw his attention for a minute. So just keep him busy and trust me."
I shift back into shadow, moving in a large arch to avoid the blasts between Thanos and Strange. As I round back towards them, I see what look like a hundred versions of Strange all around the titan, each one attaching using the glowing, orange bands to hold him place.
They all fade away as Thanos blasts the Power Stone, and only the real Doctor Strange is left. I shift back into solid form and sneak up behind the big, ugly titan. "You're full of tricks, wizard." He spits as he holds Strange by the neck and reaches for the necklace that holds the Time Stone, "Yet you never once used your greatest weapon."
The ornate piece crumbles into dust in his fist. "A fake." His voice is devoid of any emotion or surprise, and he throws Strange away. I suppose that's his signature move with how often he's used it in this fight.
I move in front of him as he takes a step towards where he just threw the wizard. "Who said that was our greatest weapon?"
"The peculiar little one returns." Thanos scoffs, "Maybe it is time you learned the power of what you're facing."
He raises his hand and flexes to close his fist. Except, this time, a piece of Iron Man tech holds his palm open. "If you throw another moon at me, or threaten her again, I'm gonna lose it." Dad calls as he lands a few meters away.
"I got a better idea." I chime and hold on to the gauntlet. There's a rush of adrenaline and pure, inexplicably strong power from the mere proximity to the infinity stones affecting me that makes me shake. "How about I lose it?"
The energy that's been bubbling under my skin for the majority of the day returns to the surface, making the silver striping of my suit glow until it's a bright, blinding white. It feels like ice and fire beneath my skin, and this time, I don't fight it. I don't push it away.
I let it roll over and through me. It pours into Thanos and the gauntlet, both of which begin to yell out.
Then the world goes white.
