So Close
The two went out into the forest, padding quietly along a faintly marked trail. They did not speak to each other. Jan watched him quietly, her ears trembling. She could not read his mind like a book, like with the others. Not knowing was terrifying for her. It was hard to think of a life where everyone was this unreadable.
Jan's ears pricked up, and she stopped in place, as the sound of a scurrying Rattata tickled her ears. She immediately went into a hunter's crouch, suppressing a rumble of her stomach, and, in short order, pounced, quickly sending the mouse down her gullet, skipping the step of killing it. She let out a soft burp, and blushed deeply upon seeing Austin staring at her. Her ears pulled back.
"S-sorry you had to see that..."
Austin shook his head slowly. "Its fine..."
The two of them continued walking, Jan cursing herself again for traumatizing him further. She tried to ignore the delicious scents and sounds of more prey scurrying around the area, but they all served only to make her hungrier and hungrier, eliciting loud growls from her stomach that made Austin flinch and tremble. Every step made his tangy fear scent stronger and stronger, to the point that Jan was surprised she could not hear his heart pounding.
"M-maybe we should-"
Jan whimpered softly, her statement cut off by another grumble from her belly, louder and longer than those before it.
"-go back..."
Austin stared at Jan with wide eyes, and the Umbreon's spirits plummeted even further, knowing he was reliving the experience of torture he had endured under the other Jan. She closed her eyes, trembling, and quickly ran further into the forest.
