THE MISCONCEPTIONS

ASSALAAMU ALAIKUM WA RAHMATULLAH..

Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him. (Sahih al-Bukhari)

The results were out. Sabira was beyond happy on seeing her excellent results. Once again she had topped her stream students with 94% marks. A hardworking student will surely not be deprived of its fruits, by the Al Wahhaab.

She was was anxiously waiting to share her results with her friends as they had received their results via mail. Writing 2 quick letters to 2 of her best friends, Zunaaisha & Ibtisaam, she dropped them at the post office , after checking one last time the addresses and the stamps.

"Apiya, abba would have been so happy , had he been here.." Khaashiya trailed off, as she remembered her father who was their sole supporter, who fought to give them what they wished for and deserved.

"Munni, He might have left this world, but he is always there with us, isn't it? May Allah forgive his sins, accept his good deeds and enter him into jannatul firdaus. Aameen. "A single tear escaped her eye.

The only other soul who stood at the door wiped her tears with her dupatta, before entering their room.

"Bete, how about we keep a small party for our close relatives and your friends? "pushing behind the sad thoughts, Maimunah asked trying to sound as cheerful as possible.

The faces that were about to smile at the thought of party changed to a frown upon listening the word 'relatives'.

"Ma, do you think they will be the least happy?" Sabira asked doubtfully.

" Who knows? Lets include them in our happiness & who knows their perspective might change. " Maimunah tried to support her opinion.

"But what if they create more problems? Its possible that they feel jealous or...something.."

"May Allah protect us from all the evil. Aameen."

"But still Ma, I don't approve it. Had abba been there it would have been a different case. Neither we have someone as influencial as abba to defend us nor does our financial status allow us." Sabira asserted.

Finally, Maimunah had to comply by her decision.

A month had passed since the results were out, but there was no reply from her friends. With the passing of each day her anxiousness increased. The pleasure in waiting for her friends' letters changed into pain and worry.

'Why did neither of them reply back? What might have have happened? ' Various whispers made into her mind only increasing in her apprehension. But the clouds of doubt and fears had to vanish as a volcano was about to erupt, the volcano of grief caused by gossip and slander.

It was during a visit in the neighbourhood, when the three went to pay their condolences to a family of deceased that they were exposed to the scandalous remarks.

"Huh!! What an example she left for others!" came a sarcastic remark.

"I did not know Maimunah's daughters to be of bad character." Another voice expressed its concern.

"It is to cover up their faults they cover themselves up." Came a voice laced with hatred

"There must have been some fault in her character, that they were so adamant on going that far to study!" Came another remark audible enough for the family of 3 .

"God knows since when she has been running this affair, that too its not a one sided affair, it seems even the guy replied to her letter, a very emotional one. "

" But you see, the Ibtisaam I knew 5 years ago was a very reserved boy. He had also completed his hifz of the Quran. Did he really change so much in these few years?" spoke another one in a hushed voice.

"That's the problem of educating too much. When girls get more than the necessary education they learn all sorts of tactics, even trapping our young boys!" criticised another lady.

" Serves their parents right. When their dignity is maligned they will realise their mistake of educating their daughters." Cursed another voice.

It seemed as though the whole village was adamant on defaming the family based on just their assumptions. Without even trying to clarify the issue. The words were not any less than hot molten lava that was being poured into their ears, burning them from within.

Nobody spoke to one another. The matter was neither clarified with them nor they knew exactly what the matter was. They did not have the courage to ask anyone what the matter was, as the way everybody avoided them or gave them hateful looks, bruised them severely from within.

The family that had come to give its condolence , returned to its abode with a charred soul. Silence enveloped the three souls. Guilt, grief, melancholy , misery, dejection & despair made its way into the once happy & content family.

The lonely moon illuminated the vast dark sky, the stars too lay hidden behind the blanket of clouds, ashamed to face the slaves, the slaves who shed their tears in front of none but his Creator.

What wrong did he do to be faced with such an allegation? An allegation that maligned the highly appreciated reputation. A personality who stood as an example for the youth of this generation.

The fire of the rumours had been fueled with each passing day with the most flammable words to such an extent that no words of defence uttered were of any use.

In the living room while Ibrahim Arbab wetted his praying rug whilst praying, the raised hands of Ibtisam shook fervently as his whole body shook whilst pleading to his Lord wetting his beard.

In the silence of the night both complained to their Lord for the disgrace faced due to the false accusations.

Three days later, her mama arrived, a questioning look on his confused face. As he sat in the couch , he retrieved a crumpled piece of paper, "Sabira, what's this? "he asked handing her the paper.

The strange expressions of her mama left her dazed. Clueless, she extended her hand to hold the crumpled paper. Straightening the paper with both her hands, her gaze fell on the opening words.'Dearest Ibbi ki jaan', and the next moment her lips curved upwards to reveal a wide smile.

But her smile vanished when her gaze shifted momentarily towards her mama, who looked at her with a shock, traces of fear visible on his face.

"What happened mama?" She asked unable to bear the tension.

"Y..you really know him?"asked her mama in a half whisper, who looked as if he had seen a ghost.

The last words were hardly audible , thus the word 'him' escaped her hearing.

"Yeah , I had written a letter a month ago sharing our results & congratulating each other. So what's so wrong about it?" asked a clueless Sabira.

Her mama shifted his gaze between mother and daughter, finally resting his gaze on Sabira once again.

"Sabi beti, you are already engaged to someone , then why are you in contact with this Ibtisaam guy?"

"Guy?!!!"

It was then, the realisation struck her!!!

Oh!! Just because of a coincidence !!!!

Alas ! It was already too late .
