Thirty Three

"We should have spoken about this part of the plan more than we did," Einstein murmured as he and Kenny stood in the Nursery building. "I doubted we would make it this far, so I'm not entirely sure how we'll find a PHC."

Kenny cautiously took a step forward and began moving down the hallway. She turned towards the first door on the left side and touched the knob. Glancing at Einstein, she opened the door just a sliver. Though it was Friday and the Nursery building was supposed to be empty, Kenny still held her breath as she peeked into the room.

No one was there, just as the plan had called for. However, there were no PHCs in the room either.

Kenny fully opened the door, allowing Einstein to see inside. He nodded, turning to the first door on the right side of the corridor. "I'll check the rooms on this side of the hallway. You can do that side."

The two began their search for a personal hologram computer, slowly making their way down the hallway. Kenny was hesitant to open the doors, and once she remembered why, she turned back to Einstein. He was much less careful in making sure no one was in the rooms before he pulled the doors open, so she tried to catch his attention before he could get too far.

"Yes, what is it?"

I had a dream. Clay is in the Nursery.

"You told me this before," Einstein snapped impatiently. "Hurry now. We want to do this as quickly as possible."

Kenny shook her head and scribbled on an index card before he could focus on something other than what she had to say. There are people here.

After a silent moment, Einstein's eyes widened in realization. He removed his hand from the door he'd been about to open and glanced down the hallway. "Who was with you in your dream? Other than Clay, of course. Was Dr. Anderson there?"

Kenny nodded, putting her card back into her pocket.

"How lovely," the boy muttered sarcastically. "They were in the Nursery when you say them, correct? Hm...I'm not sure if we're going to be able to find Clay if Dr. Anderson is experimenting on him in the Nursery."

Kenny frowned. She had to take Clay with her and Einstein. What do you mean?

Einstein's eyebrows came together. "If Dr. Anderson is studying Clay's new abilities as you say, she probably has an eye on Clay at all times. Unless you want to get caught and sent to Detention, I doubt we can go see him, much less help him escape with us. I promise, we'll come back for him after we've gone."

Kenny shook her head. Her stomach churned at the thought of Clay in the Nursery for another hour, much less the few days or weeks it would take her and Einstein to sneak back into AGC. She knew she was going to get caught somehow that night, and even if she didn't escape, she wanted Clay to.

Einstein stared at Kenny for a moment before scratching his head. "If you think of a plan that the two of us could execute while we look for a PHC, perhaps we could find him. I just...I don't know, Hawking. It seems unlikely."

The girl turned back towards her door and opened it, silently scourging the room with her eyes. The hunt for an Orion continued, and it wasn't until a few minutes later that Einstein finally came across a room with a PHC inside. A medical table with straps to restrain subjects sat in the middle of the space, causing Kenny to cringe as she remembered her vision from several night before. She noted the closet near the corner of the room as a place to hide in case anything went wrong and nervously stepped into the room.

"There it is," Einstein breathed. He walked past Kenny and hurried to the computer.

The PHC lay underneath a glass desk next to a cart with a multitude of small vials and needles. Kenny pushed the cart away from the machine and inspected the vials. Nearly all of them were labeled as lacumemeine, but there were several anesthesics and anxiolytics. She flinched at the thought of being injected with any of them and touched the side of her neck.

"Be careful with those," Einstein demanded quickly. "It'd be best if you didn't touch them."

Kenny gladly pulled away from the cart and walked towards her next problem. The PHC had long since detected someone's presence in the room, and a hologram was now bouncing in front of the young girl's eyes. PLEASE LOG IN.

Einstein nodded towards the computer. "Go on."

Kenny couldn't move. She hadn't realized she would have to log into the computer with Einstein in the room. Her face grew warm as she stared at the words before her. She looked around the room, searching for something to help, and pointed towards the closet.

"Do you want me to...go into the closet? While you log into the computer?" Einstein paused for a moment but soon turned away. He trudged toward the door in the corner of the room, muttering under his breath.

Kenny waited for the boy to close the closet door behind him, her cheeks bright red. Once she was sure he wasn't able to hear her, she took a deep breath and opened her mouth. The last time she'd spoken aloud was several weeks before, and she could only hope she hadn't gone hoarse.

PLEASE SAY YOUR FULL NAME, the PHC commanded.

"Kendall Annabeth Frodell," Kenny whispered hurriedly.

The beams of light that created the hologram before the young girl changed. PLEASE REPEAT LOUDER.

Kenny cleared her throat and attempted to speak up. "K-Kendall Annabeth Frodell."

The PHC took several seconds to process her words, and her heart nearly stopped in her chest. Embarrassed at her voice and uncomfortable at the prospect of speaking again to delete her account on the computer, Kenny played with her fingers to distract herself. Talking after a long stretch of silence was much more anxiety-inducing than she'd remembered. And it didn't help that Einstein had suddenly appeared by her side.

Kenny jumped into midair, terrified. She instinctively took a step away from him.

Einstein tried to look her in the eyes, but she couldn't keep them from darting around the room. "You're quite uneasy tonight; this is the second time I've scared you. But you still did a wonderful job logging in. Thank you for that."

The girl frowned at this. It wasn't like Einstein to compliment her unless he had a reason to. She only had to glance at the guilty-looking boy understand why he'd done it.

Einstein had heard. Einstein had heard Kenny log into the PHC.

Kenny's entire body felt cold. Her heart, which had been beating furiously ever since the two had stepped into the Nursery building, felt as though it had dropped into her unsettled stomach. She couldn't tell whether her face was still red or if the color had been drained from it; either way, she was extremely embarrassed and wanted to sprint back to the closet in her dorm room.

"Are you alright, Hawking?" Einstein asked. "If it means anything to you, I didn't hear very much...."

Kenny's eyebrows furrowed, and she tuned out Einstein's weak attempts at an apology. She turned away from the boy, shuffling towards the closet to sit, when she heard small thumps coming from outside the door. She held her index finger up to quiet Einstein and listened until she was able to identify the noise.

Footsteps. Someone was walking towards the room Kenny and Einstein were in.

Einstein unwrapped his coat from around his waist and threw it onto the PHC to hide the hologram. Kenny hurried to the closet with him hot on her heels, the two cramming themselves and their backpacks into the small space. The second after they managed to close the closet door, the door to the room opened and the footsteps ceased.

"Is anyone here?" an accented voice asked after a moment. Kenny stifled a gasp as she realized it was the one from her dream. She and Einstein would be found in the closet, and they would be taken down to the Nursery. Perhaps her vision had been wrong, and Einstein was going to be caught with her. She'd be brainwashed while he was terminated.

However, before Kenny could surrender and hope for the best, the footsteps sounded once more. "I'm hearing the students in their Dorms again," the man muttered as he closed the door behind him.

Einstein inhaled sharply, gasping for breath. "How I hate Mr. Old as Time's Gift. You can't breathe too heavily when he's near, or else he'll find you without any trouble. He has enhanced hearing."

Kenny opened the closet door and gestured toward the PHC. She couldn't look at Einstein without feeling embarrassed or wanting to abort the escape plan, so she decided it would be best for her to simply stay in the closet while he shut down the security system. Einstein slowly stood from his crouched position and headed over to the computer.

As Einstein typed, Kenny tried to focus her thoughts on something other than the fact that the boy knew what her voice sounded like. She thought about Clay and began to form ideas as to how to find her friend. Out of all of the plans, only two would work if her vision was to come true: she be caught and use Mr. Old as Time to bring her to to him or she and Einstein could sneak to the Nursery and help Clay escape.

"Almost done!" Einstein called from the computer. "I just have to check this for mistakes and have the computer execute it. Then we can leave."

Kenny thought over her choices, and she knew which one had a higher probability of going well. However, she also knew that Einstein had been waiting to escape AGC for months now. She couldn't risk his one chance at freedom for Clay, could she?

Before Einstein could finish whatever he was doing, Kenny wrote out several index cards and pulled her ID card from her backpack. She placed the small pack of cards in the pocket on the boy's bag and stood. No more than a minute later, Einstein got up from the PHC.

"I've done it. Now you can log off of Orion. I'll stay in the closet this time."

Kenny scowled at the blush that crept onto her cheeks. She made her way to the PHC as Einstein closed the closet door. She opened the virtual assistant application and spoke into it as quietly as she could.

"Delete account," the girl murmured.

The assistant then told her to enter a code into a box and say the words, "I am Kendall Annabeth Frodell, and I would like to delete my account on all PHCs on this private network." Kenny did as asked of her as quietly as she could to prevent Einstein from being able to hear her in the closet. Finally, she was able to delete her network profile.

Einstein came out of the closet a few moments after Kenny was finished. Hesitantly, he took a breath and began, "I know this isn't a great time, but you said you knew Gabriel before."

Kenny nodded. He's nice, she replied. She then searched through her pack of card for the one she'd made for this exact moment. The complete opposite of you in every way.

Einstein scowled, but he was too curious to frown for very long. "How did you two communicate? Can he read already?"

'He knows sign language. Do you?' Kenny signed.

"Is that...sign language? You know sign language? Does he? Why?" the boy asked curiously.

Kenny wasn't sure how to explain how his father had been deaf and his mother was hearing impaired without wasting time with a blank index card, so she replied, I'll explain later.

Einstein nodded. "Did you know he was Gifted when you met him?"

Kenny looked to Einstein in shock. Gabriel was Gifted? The same Gabriel she'd played catch with every afternoon?

He nodded, answering the question lurking in her eyes. "Our DNA is identical. If I have a Gift, Gabriel has one too. You were bound to have observed something odd about him in the time you spent with him. Did you notice anything that could possibly be a Gift of some sort?"

The young girl paused, thinking back to the times she's spent with her friend. She smiled, recalling playing catch with an oversized mit and a yellowing baseball. She remembered how the whole world seemed to light up whenever he smiled and how his grin was brighter than any other smile she'd seen.

The more Kenny thought about Gabriel's smile, the more she realized how odd it was that no single person could ever smile as brightly as him. Perhaps it was because he was so cheerful, but what if there was something that caused him to shine so unnaturally bright? She could recall reading about a Gift that would allow him to do that, but she couldn't remember the title. She soon shook her head clear, realizing how ridiculous she was being.

No, I didn't, Kenny replied to Einstein's question. She pointed to her back, wordlessly telling Einstein he should put his backpack on so the two could leave the room.

Einstein nodded and headed into the closet. "Enough about...my brother," he started, and Kenny could tell he felt odd saying the word aloud. "We should think about Clay. Have you figured out how--"

Kenny lifted a finger up once more, listening. The footsteps had returned, but this time, they were much more determined and quicker than last time. Mr. Old as Time was returning, and Kenny was standing across the room from the closet. Einstein's eyes widened as he realized what she knew all along: Kenny was going to be caught.

The girl had to open her mouth twice before she could finally choke her words out. "The side pocket."

If possible, Einstein's eyes widened even more. What are you doing? he mouthed, not wanting to be heard by Mr. Old as Time outside the door.

Taking responsibility, Kenny mouthed in response. Before she could say anything else, the door swung open. Mr. Old as Time frowned at her presence.

"What are you doing here? How did you get into this building?" Mr. Old as Time looked over everything in the room, his eyes falling on the medicine cart next to Kenny. "Is that what you were doing? Metal was right then! Come here!"

The man took her by the arm and pulled the young girl away from Einstein and the PHC. She truly hoped that her plan would work.
