Ch. 4
"You think we shouldn't stay here? What gave you that idea? The crazy lady banging on our door, or the corpse that got up and bit our mom?" Remus asked sarcastically.
"Where would we even go?" Patton asked, grabbing Roman's arm and hugging it.
Genira stumbled over to the couch and sat down.
"Somewhere where this isn't happening, probably." Virgil said, pointing towards the door, that Janus and Logan struggled push against.
"How is she so strong?!" Janus grunted, trying to fully close the door.
Remus glanced out the window. "I think it has someone to do with the fact that there are twelve of her now."
"What?!" Virgil exclaimed, rushing to look out the window as well. "Shit, he's right!"
"They look just like dad does." Roman mumbled under his breath. Patton, being the only one close enough to hear him, tilted his head curiously.
Virgil cursed. "I see more of those...things coming."
"They're people, Virge." Patton frowned.
"No, I don't know what the fuck they are, but they're not people." Virgil hissed.
"It's getting a little--" Janus began, when suddenly the crack was large enough for a hand to shoot out. Logan, frightened, grabbed a nearby shoe and hit it back outside. They slammed the door back, not letting it happen again. "--difficult." Janus finished, pale.
"We'll have to climb the fence in the backyard." Roman said, frowning. "How do we get Janus and Logan away from the door safely?"
"Find something heavy, obviously!" Logan snapped. "Combined, Janus and I weigh roughly 492 pounds!"
"It's incredibly weird that you know that." Janus said.
"You need to find something heavier, since we're barely enough to hold the door!" Logan told Roman.
"I'll help." Remus nodded.
The pair went into their shared bedroom, looking around.
"We could use the desk?" Remus offered.
"That thing is not nearly heavy enough." Roman dismissed, not even glancing at him. "Could we push the bed?"
"Would we get it in there in time?" Remus asked.
"Doubt it." Roman huffed. He snapped, an idea popping into his head. "Oh! We could use that old dresser!"
"Oh yeah! Where did we move that thing again?" Remus looked around for it.
"I think it was in dad's..." Roman trailed off, face falling, "...room." He finished lamely.
They both glanced towards the master bedroom, where their father banged on the door.
"Well, that's going to be an issue." Remus frowned. "I think that's the only thing we have available to us."
"We're gonna have to get it." Roman frowned, walking towards the door.
"Wait, Ro." Remus called. "Catch."
He tossed something at Roman, whose eyes promptly widened when he saw what it was. "Remus, this is a pocketknife."
"Yeah?" Remus looked at him weirdly, pulling out another and putting it in his own pocket. "Thought that was obvious."
"You threw a pocketknife at me!" Roman exclaimed incredulously. "You could've cut my eye out!"
"But I didn't!" Remus winked at him, pushing past him.
"You wanna pull a knife on our dad?" Roman asked, raising a brow.
"We can both agree that the thing in there isn't dad anymore." Remus huffed. "Just like how those things outside aren't people anymore."
Roman frowned. "Are you okay?"
"What? I'm fine." Remus glanced at him weirdly.
"Really? You seem really...different right now. You're just...off." Roman tried to explain.
"No, I'm not." Remus snapped.
"Yes, you are! You--"
"Well, what the fuck do you want me to do, huh?!" Remus scowled at Roman. "Cry? Scream? Shit my pants?"
"I--" Roman stammered, startled.
"Our dad was dead a few minutes ago, of course I'm feeling terrible!" Remus spat. "But I'm not going to sit here and cry about it."
Roman stared at him in stunned silence for a moment, before frowning. "I'm sorry."
"Whatever." Remus huffed.
He put his hand on the doorknob to the master bedroom.
"Wait, Ree, what's the plan?" Roman asked, furrowing his brow.
"The plan?" Remus hummed. He considered the question for a moment. "The plan is to not die." He shot Roman a quick grin, and opened the door.
Immediately, their dad tackled Remus to the floor.
Remus quickly shoved him off and rushed inside, Roman following behind him.
"There it is." Remus said, pointing towards the dresser that stood tall to the side of the room. "How do we get it past the big guy?" He pointed towards their dad, who had gotten up and was making his way towards them.
"One of us will need to distract him." Roman mumbled. "I'll do it. You do rowing, your arms are stronger than mine."
"Don't die or I'll kill you." Remus told him, preparing to push the dresser.
Roman took a deep breath, turning towards their dad.
He had to bait Arin to the back of the room, that way Remus could sneak past him.
"Um, hey there." Roman pursed his lips awkwardly, rolling his sleeves up. "Uh, look at me."
"You're doing great, Ro." Remus told him, pushing the dresser onto its side.
It hit the ground with a loud thump, gaining Arin's attention.
Roman, panicked, screamed at the top of his lungs to regain awareness.
Remus looked at him bizarrely as he began pushing the dresser out of the room.
A pair of feet came running down the hall, the footsteps making large thumps.
"Roman?!" Patton yelled, eyes blown wide in fear.
"No! You idiot!" Remus growled at Patton.
Arin turned to Patton, who froze at first sight of him. He stumbled towards Patton, whose feet seemed to be stuck to the floor.
"Move!" Roman exclaimed,rushing foward.
He grabbed the back of Arin's shirt and threw him the opposite direction.
He stumbled backwards, right into the TV stand in their bedroom.
The TV fell on him, crushing his legs.
"Are you alright?!" Roman asked Patton.
Patton teared up. "...you yelled at me." He looked away from Roman. "You've never yelled at me before."
"I'm sorry, Pat. I just didn't want you to get hurt." Roman sighed.
"Hey, lovebirds, a little help?" Remus asked, still pushing the dresser.
Roman glanced back at their father, who was reaching out for them.
He helped push the dresser.
