Chapter 4

– Harry & Liam –

Friendship – it's one of the most wonderful things in this world. The thing that could last a life time or maybe not, but it's a chance most are willing to take because just having someone there for you twenty-four seven is simply a great feeling. To know that you a have a friend that would go to ends of the earth for you – Harry has four friends like this.

Though today, he's only meeting up with one of them. Liam Payne, old band mate but still best mate.

The two sat on a brown sofa, sipping on a couple of beers and ever-so-often glancing at the television that was sat in front of them on mute. Usually, when seeing such actions some would assume the aura to be awkward or uncomfortable but neither lad felt that way.

Harry had been here for just over fifteen minutes, his mind was racing from subject to subject whilst Liam thought about what was going through Harry's mind. Because he's known the lad for so many years and he knows when Harry goes off on his famous 'thinking mode' about any little thing – that mode always worried Liam.

"It's just that I really have no inspiration at the moment," Liam broke the silence, picking up the conversation from where they had left off. He had asked Harry if he had any idea for a new song and before he knew it, Harry was back in his thoughts.

Most people had thought that after One Direction ended that Harry would be the one go off in a solo career and pull a Justin Timberlake but he didn't. He knew that he wanted to settle down with Katelyn and just try and have a normal relationship with her – he wanted no hate to come her way and wanted her to always be by his side. So it was quite a shock to the fans that Harry hadn't taken the solo career, but Liam had. He just loved the rush of performing so much and yeah, he misses performing with the boys but the others didn't want to continue on and Liam did.

So now, here they were; Liam asking Harry for inspiration and help for his next single.

Liam Payne had lost inspiration ever since he's broken up with his girlfriend, Jaime. They had broken up over the fact that Liam was always busy with work and she had said that a relationship takes effort from both sides. But that was months ago and yet, Liam still found himself in a rut which is why he had called Harry this morning for some help.

Seeing that Harry was still in his thoughts, Liam sighed and placed his bottle onto the coffee table. "So what's been going on? Last time I saw you was when Athena turned five, how is she?" That was months ago.

"She's good." Harry nodded, placing the bottle down as well. "I just dropped her off at school and met her little friend named Jake..."

By how he trailed off, Liam knew that there was something else. Pursing his lips, he glanced around his messy living room seeing all the crumpled pieces of paper from failed attempts at writing and his guitar leaning against the recliner. He wished that he could read minds; because once he glanced back over to Harry he saw a little sparkle in his eyes, one he hasn't seen since Katelyn had passed.

"How are you holding up?" Liam asked timidly, his gaze falling onto the sofa they sat on.

Harry took in a sharp breath before finally looking over to Liam. He knew that Liam was one of those helpful types, and just wanted him to let out his feelings but he just couldn't. He could never really talk about Katelyn all too well and he hated to talk about how he felt about her passing even more. It just made his emotions from the one awful night to surface again.

"'m fine," he responded gruffly as his eyes darted back to his lap. He honestly didn't know why Liam had called him of all people because to write a song you need to show feelings, you have to feel it pouring out and Harry isn't too keen on sharing his feelings at the moment. He could've called Niall – God knows the Irish lad would go out of his way to help any of his former band mates – or Louis or Zayn – people that didn't mind talking about their feelings but of course, he was the chosen one. Maybe it was because he was located closer to Liam than any of the others.

"Harry, you know you can talk to me," Liam said scooting closer to the younger lad. He sighed and wrapped an arm around Harry's shoulders, shaking him softly. "Now tell me what's on your mind."

"I met this girl," Harry sputtered, revealing one of his many thoughts. It's not odd that he had Katelyn and Athena on his mind but why Monica? Sure, she had mate quite the impression on him that made a certain feeling course through him but when he'd think of that, his thoughts would immediately snap to Katelyn – how much he still loves her and then they would snap to Athena and then his past of what he went through when his parents had gotten divorced.

Sometimes, Harry wishes he could escape his thoughts.

"Really?" The smile that formed on Liam's face was simply something of pure happiness. He doesn't remember the last time Harry had said such words, and it was good to hear because Liam always had thoughts about Harry, and how he'll never accept Katelyn's death and that she would want Harry to move on – he knew Katelyn like a third sister, he knew she wouldn't want him to dwell like he has for the past years.

Detecting Liam's smile, Harry frowned. "Not like that, Li. Jake's Mum... we had talked and I don't know there was something different about her. I just – I just don't know what I'm doing anymore."

"You're afraid to move on," Liam stated simply. He had prepared this conversation for so long, because he wanted Harry to be happy with someone again. He then glanced down to Harry's hand, seeing the silver band still adoring his ring finger. He sighed. "What's her name?"

"Monica," he murmured, his fingers beginning to fiddle with each other. And just as Liam was about to respond, he spoke again. "She was gorgeous, Liam. And her voice, it was such a sweet soprano and it was a bit scratchy but it made it lovelier – " Harry paused, "– Am I crazy?"

"Not at all, you're accepting that a woman is beautiful nothing is wrong with that," Liam rubbed Harry's arm softly, keeping his arm wrapped around the conflicted lad.

Harry didn't know what to think – something just felt wrong about this, how Monica was on his mind. He had just met the girl and she's already invading his thoughts that are specifically reserved for Katelyn and Athena. And yet, here she was.

"Go ahead." Harry sighed shrugging Liam's arm off his shoulders.

"What?" Liam scooted back a bit and rose his eyebrows up at Harry's comment.

"Make this into a hit single, you git." Harry chuckled lightly, his demeanor changing from being conflicted and sad to teasing and happy – because his mates can always change him in a way that no one else can.

Liam chuckled but nodded nonetheless, he stood up and grabbed his guitar before strumming it a bit. "Care to help me with this?"

.

"I can't believe I let you come with me." Harry huffed, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel impatiently as he stared down the stop light. Liam simply chuckled at his remark before looking out the window, his arm resting on the center counsel.

"Hey, I just want to see this girl Monica, okay?" Liam gave the driver a sideways glance. Honestly, Harry doesn't know why Liam does want to meet her but he could assume it's because it's the first girl he's ever talked about that wasn't his Mum, Gemma, Katelyn or Athena. "Hm, maybe if she's fit I'll ask to dinner."

"Don't downgrade her, Payne." Harry huffed once more, turning into the car lot of the school. Ever since Harry had been with Katelyn he realized that woman shouldn't be downgraded with such terms that he and the lads used to use a lot – he loved the other words: beautiful, gorgeous, pretty and his favourite, angelic.

After Harry had helped Liam with writing a song, the two had spent the rest of the time watching a couple football games and talking about anything that came to mind. Even dwelling on their past of being in One Direction, that famous quote "those were the days" leaving Harry's lips every time he'd remember something amazing.

"Calm yourself, Styles." Liam lightly punched his shoulder before exiting out of the already-parked car. He waited patiently for Harry to exit as well before the two walked to the building, Harry's eye scanning the lot for any sign of the girl he'd just met that morning.

Once entering the building, the two stood off to the side waiting for the class to be dismissed. It was about fifteen minutes until they let out but Harry never wanted to keep Athena waiting so he always came early. Pulling out his phone, he scanned a few emails before pulling up twitter and though he was no longer in the spotlight, there was still the official check by his name and still so many Directioners following him in hopes that he'll finally tweet after eternity.

   And he did.

'@Harry_Styles: sometimes things go wrong for the better x '

That had been going through his mind during the time he was helping Liam out – and yeah, Liam wrote a song about Harry's feelings but had said that he wouldn't use it because it's Harry's feelings and he'd never exploit them. Instead, he folded it up and hid in his bedroom, not letting Harry know what he had actually written.

"Why'd you tweet that?" Liam questioned, slightly startling the tall boy. Harry glanced over to him with raised eyebrows, the app filing Liam's screen. Once noticing Harry's confused gaze, he shrugged. "I have you favourited on twitter... I get notifications when you tweet."

Harry chuckled lightly, shoving his hands into his front pockets – grateful that he didn't have to answer his question because really, he didn't know why he tweeted that. When hearing the bell ring – signaling that class has ended – Liam's head snapped up and he scoured the place not only for his niece but also for the girl Harry had told him about.

"Should've figured she'd be late." Harry laughed quietly to himself, remembering her stumbling in this morning. He then lowered his gaze to see his daughter walking over to him, her friend Jake in tow.

"Uncle Li!" Was the first thing that left her lips once she was close enough. She immediately attacked the bearded lad in a hug, making Liam laugh and wrap his arms around her small frame.

"Oh, I see how it is. You love him more than me, huh?" Harry teased, poking his daughter on the cheek. Athena giggled before squirming out of Liam's grasp, wrapping her arms around her father.

"No, I love you more." She kissed him on the cheek as he placed her onto his hip. Harry then looked down to Jake, who stared at Harry as if he was the greatest thing he ever laid eyes on. Harry let out an awkward chuckle before lifting his fist to the younger lad.

"Do you want a fist bump, bud?" And then came this smile, this amazing and most cherishing smile that formed on Jake's face. He lifted his small fist to connect with Harry's before hearing his mum.

"Jake, what did I say about talking to strange – " Monica's parenting mode soon came to halt when she caught sight of Harry and Liam, her lips parted in shock.

At this time, Liam's brain connected the dots and realized that this was the girl Harry had talked about. She was indeed gorgeous like Harry had said, but he didn't mention that she was a fan because he could detect in her eyes that she was star struck.

"Hi, Monica." Harry greeted the flustered – and late – mother with a smile. He set Athena down, ignoring her five-year-old gaze. He shoved his hands in his pockets. "This is Liam."

Liam gave Monica a smile as he held out his hand. She smiled as well, grasping his hand and giving it a small shake. "Gosh, I've met two-fifths in one day..."

Liam automatically laughed. "Ah, former fan I presume?"

Monica nodded eagerly, glancing between the two old members. After doing so for quite a while she looked down and took grasp of Jake's hand not noticing that both boys were watching her.

"You're right, she is gorgeous," Liam murmured to Harry before leaning down and picking up Athena. "Well, I'll just get Athena settled down in her car seat. Nice to meet you, Monica."

"You too," she replied watching him leave before she met Harry's gaze. "So, we meet again."

(A/N): okay, so that had more dialogue than I had planned... But I hope you all liked it anyways because Lirry was involved and who doesn't like a bit of Lirry? Exactly. Omg, chapter four in honor of four years of One Direction – I'm crying.

Importance of Chapter: this was to show you a bit on what's going on with Harry and how Monica had affected him. It also showed that he's feeling conflicted (he's meant to feel this way) because it shows that even if Monica is on his mind Katelyn is always there too – probably always will. Also, it's to give a bit of what happened with the other lads and that Liam had taken a solo career (by the way, the song he wrote is important, don't forget about it). Yeah, that sums it up.

SONG FOR CHAPTER:  I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU – THE REMBRANDTS

Importance of Song: Yes, this is the Friends theme song (I couldn't help myself). Anyways, this is to show that Harry will always have Liam – and the other lads – by his side no matter what happens because they are true friends and will always be there for him.
