Chapter Two
In Antlantica, Triton was going through the preparations for his youngest son's eighteenth birthday, he made sure that the decorations were all set and behind him his oldest son, Jason was swimming by him along with Triton's right hand man, Sean, they had just about wrapped up the preparations for Mark's eighteenth birthday.
"Is everything set?" Triton asked Jason and Sean.
"Yes sir," says Sean immediately. "Everything from the decorations to the music should be all set,"
"Jason, what of the merprincesses?" questioned Triton. "Are any of them willing to marry your brother?"
"At least five my lord," says Jason as he swam with his father. As Triton continued to question everything he had noticed by the way the sun was shining on the ocean that it was late afternoon/early evening. He had been wondering where Mark was and worried that Mark had decided to venture further out than he was allowed to.
"Sean, Jason," says Triton. "Have you seen Mark?"
"Not since this morning sir," says Sean. "Last I checked he had gone to his room to do his studies, I hadn't seen him since,"
"I haven't seen him all day since breakfast dad," Jason said even though he knew exactly where Mark had gone. Jason had been keeping Mark's little adventures a secret from their father since he knew that if their father found out something was going to happen, and he did not want to get involved with it. "I'm sure he'll turn up," Meanwhile, back in the sunken ship Mark was still exploring parts of it when Ethan cleared his throat.
"Mark," says Ethan, "I really think we should go,"
"What? And leave all of these interesting treasures alone?" says Mark who had gone into a captains cabin and saw an interesting object that was short and silver at the tip but shiny on the leather part. Ethan gulped when he saw the shadow pass by again and swam over to Mark. Ethan grabbed Mark's arm and tried to drag him away from the cabin to get them out safely however, Mark just shrugged him off and swam back to the cabin to see what other treasures lay in the room.
"Mark seriously, I'm starting to get a bad feeling," Ethan continued pushing.
"No that's just your nerves man," responds Mark but when he had grabbed the strange weapon and placed it in his bag, Ethan rolled his eyes and slapped Mark in the back of the head with his tail.
"You idiot! We need to go now!" Ethan exclaimed when Mark glared at him only to see a large set of teeth swimming extremely fast toward them not even stopping to see that it was going to run into the sunken vessel. Mark's eyes widen as he grabbed Ethan's arm and dragged him away from the captains cabin. Immediately the shark burst through the wood and snapped at the two mermen who had to spread out before either of them were bitten.
"Why didn't you tell me that there was a shark coming after our tails?!" Mark exclaimed.
"Don't you think I tried!" Ethan yelled. "You were busy with your little treasure hunt!" The shark was briefly phased by the impact but recovered and saw the two mermen before it. It turned and swam at full speed toward the prince and his friend.
"Split up!" exclaimed Mark as Ethan went down while Mark went up. Mark hoped that was a way to distract the shark until he could find a way out. He looked down and saw that there was a large opening to the open water. He grabbed Ethan once again and swam for the opening. The shark turned and swam after them. Mark and Ethan swam as fast as they could and were getting close to becoming shark food when Mark noticed a large rock that was sticking up from the ocean floor. An idea suddenly struck Mark as he looked toward Ethan with a smile on his face.
"Ethan I have an idea," Says Mark.
"Please tell me it's a way to get away from the damn shark?" Questioned Ethan.
"It sure is, now come on!" Mark swam down as Ethan followed he noticed the large rock formation as his eyes widened while he looked at Mark.
"Don't you dare even think about it Mark," says Ethan nervously.
"Trust me, I know what I'm doing," says Mark as he and Ethan swam down fast the shark took a dive but before it had the chance to turn around, it slammed into the rock and rethought about what his pray was going to be. With one long look, the shark swam away from Mark and Ethan. Mark laughed and slapped Ethan on the back with his hand. "You see! I knew exactly what I was doing!"
"Great, well why don't we go back to Antlantica and forget this day ever happened?" Ethan suggested. Mark laughed and looked at his friend.
"Not yet, there's something I have to do first," Mark said as he swam up toward the surface of the water.
"Ugh! Mark! You know your not supposed to go up there!" Ethan exclaimed. But Mark had already been swimming up there. He surfaced and swam behind a rock, when Mark wanted to get away from his education and royal duties he would often go to the human world to observe the humans the way they had walked or even worked together made him ever so curious about going to the human world each day. Ethan surfaced next and hid by the same rock, from a distance no one would think to assume there were merpeople in the ocean watching them. "Mark, we shouldn't be up here, you know how your father is when it comes to the human world,"
"So what? My father can bitch and complain about the humans, but I find them fascinating, the way they move and the way they carry on with their everyday lives," Says Mark.
"Have you forgotten what else they can do?" Ethan said. "They catch merpeople like us and put us on display for crowds to look at us!"
"I don't care, one of these days I'm going to be on this land with them," says Mark. "Maybe I'll even find the one I love,"
"A human? Mark you can't seriously think these creatures will love us!" says Ethan "We're science experiments to them!" Mark watched but when he turned he saw that the sun was setting, and realization had dawned on him. His eyes widened as he turned back to Ethan.
"Oh no! The birthday celebration!" Mark exclaimed. "I should have been there!" He continued. "My father is going to kill me!"
"Why do you think I've been trying to tell you! Come on!" yells Ethan "Or else your father is really going to kill us!" The two friends dove underwater and started to swim back toward Antlantica. Though, they had failed to notice that they were being watched by two eels. Back in her lair a sea witch watched everything unfold as she had noticed through the eyes of her eels an evil plan began to unfold as she gave the eels a job.
"Flotsam, Jetsam," she says. "Keep an eye on our merprince, I mean after all, whose to say that he won't need our help at some point,"
