Chapter 1:
Haven't you ever wondered what goes on within the most exclusive group at school? At South View High, that's what's on everyone's minds. The prettiest girls are supposed to be the ones falling over top of any guy that comes along, right? Not exactly. Some guys love the chase. When the girl they want doesn't seem to be interested, they crave the thrill it brings to try and get under their skin and impress them. And for others, it makes them angry; insane even.
Callie Miller is that girl. Every guys wants her, and every girl wants to be her. But she's untouchable. Her friends act like she's the president or something, and that if they let her out of their sight, she'll be killed. Either way, it's impossible to get to her. And there's no getting past her "security." But I'll never stop trying. They sit all around her in class, they don't even come to lunch, and they guard her like it's their job. But the same question is in the head of every person in this school- why?
Everyone has their theories: Maybe she's from juvie, maybe she's crazy, maybe she's an alien. But I don't believe any of them. Though I have made it my goal to figure her and her posse out. It-She is all I ever think of. I mean, I've loved ever since the first moment I saw her.
It was the first day of my sophomore year, and I was watching all the new freshmen come into the building. Most guys watch them get off the buses so they can size up all the girls and pick which ones they're going to hit on later that day.
But then A black camaro swerved into the front lot and five kids dressed in dark clothing stepped out, sporting huge sunglasses and sheilding their faces with their hands. School starts to early in the morning, that the sun was just barely rising.
Then they sort of started to get into some formation. The two guys taking the lead, and the two older looking girls in the back, with the pale blonde in the middle. Callie. She looked so sacred, like even though she was sorrounded by people, she still feared for her life. From that moment on, I knew I would always be in love with her.
And as usual, guys attempted to approach her all day long, but the tall burly one, Kaden, kept them away from her. A few times those first few weeks, I found the shorter of the two boys, Jason, cozying up to Callie and trying to be close to her, but she always batted him away. Maybe he had a cursh on her too. Then again, that might have been Kaden's reason for guarding her as well. He might have had some if I can't have her no one can mentality.
Now it's my senior year, and my time to impress Callie is running out. If I don't make my move soon, I'll never win her over. But the beginning of the new year is a time for second chances- or first chance in my case.
The bell rings and I head to my first class for Biology. I slide into the back next to my friend, Hunter, and drop my bag behind me. I look around the room, and Kaden steps into the room. And where Kaden goes, the rest tend to follow. Sure enough, I see Callie come in along with the other three.
Kaden and Jason sit on either side of Callie, Alice and Marie taking the seats behind her. I think the strangest thing about Callie is that she leaves her sunglasses on all day. At first, we all assumed she was blind, and that her friends were like a bunch of seeing eye dogs to keep her from running into the wall. But soon enough we realized that she could see perfectly fine.
I have seen her whole face once before-but only that one time. It was that first week, and I was headed to the bathroom. No one else was in the hall, but Callie was standing in front of the long window, looking at her reflection. She slowly pulled her glasses down and replaced just as quickly. But that didn't keep me from seeing her eyes.
I swear they glowed. They were a bright, vibrant red, like a demonic cat or something. It was terrifying. The window was foggy because it had been raining so her reflection was barely there, but her eyes were there clear as day.
She had no idea i was there, and she probably never will. But I guess that's why she wears the glasses.
"Okay class." The teacher starts pacing up and down the aisle with her hands clasped tightly behind her back. "I want you to talk with the people around you while I pass out the class syllabus." She grabs a stack of freshly-printed white paper and starts to pass them down the rows of desks. "For the entire semester, I want you working in groups." My ears perk up a little. This could be my chance. If I end up in a group with Callie, I would be paired with her for the whole semester! But I doubt that they would let me in.
"Stop it!" The teacher calls off all of the chattering and looks around, "Before you all get too excited, I have already assigned all of the groups." Everyone groans a little bit, but Kaden and Jason look both frustrated and nervous.
Jason whispers something in Kaden's ear and he nods solemnly. Alice and Marie grip Callie's shoulders protectively, looking worriedly around the room. "Damn it..." I hear Kaden mutter under his breath.
Finally the teacher pressing a button on her remote, and a list of names pops up on the screen. "Everyone find your groups, please." The teacher says and immediatley everyone searches the list for their name before grabbing their things and moving around the room.
I look from the very top and am about to raise my hand to say I'm not anywhere on there when I spot the very last two names on the list.
Matthew Ford and Callie Miller.
