Chapter 8

I followed Jasper back upstairs and into my room. He plopped down on my bed. "I want to ask you something before we start."

I shrugged and he went on. "How have you been seeing your parents lately? Like family or food?"

I frowned. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"Well, they're human, right? You're not so it's got to be hard to hold your self control." He paused. "Are you adopted?"

"No? Why are you asking me all this?" I asked crossing my arms.

"Well, vampires don't come from humans, you know? They're born from other vampires. The only way that you could be a vampire while the rest of your family is human would be if you were adopted."

"But, I'm not adopted. Maybe there's just some mistake or something and what's been making me crave blood is some disease."

He frowned at me. "That was really offensive."

"Why?"

"Because I'm just like you. So you basically just said that I'm a disease." He said flatly.

I rolled my eyes. "Whatever. Either way, I'm not adopted."

He frowned and shook his head. "You have to be. There's-"

"I'm not adopted. My mom raised me since the second she learned she was pregnant and my dad helped her. A few years later I got a little brother named Benjamin. I'm not adopted."

He sighed. "Then somehow you got turned into a vampire. A theory that has existed for hundreds of years but, has never been proven."

"What do you mean?"

"For a while now, vampire scientists have tried to figure out a way to turn a human into a vampire. They think they can do it but, it's never worked. I used to help out this one scientist when I was younger but, he turned out to be a loony." Jasper rubbed his forehead. "I didn't doubt it was possible but, I didn't think I'd be alive when it happened."

"So, wait. You're saying that, somehow, I was turned into one of you?"

He glared at me. "Could you not say it like I'm a animal, please?"

I ignored him. "Is there a way to change me back?"

He frowned. "I don't know. I only worked for the guy for a little bit and I was only the errand boy. I never actually helped with his research."

I slumped and sat down at my desk. He shrugged. "Besides, being a vampire may be harder but, it's definitely funner. You don't actually have to have a job because you don't need to buy food and most vampires just take any money that their prey have so they can have a place to stay."

"But, I don't want to be a vampire. I want to be normal and have a family like every other person I know." I said looking down.

The room was silent for a bit before Jasper stood up. "I hate depressing atmospheres. Come on. You wanted me to teach you, right?"

"Yeah..."

He grabbed my hand and tugged me towards the window. "Then we better hurry. You need to start learning. I'm not going to keep bringing you meals."

"But, you already showed me how to hunt. What else is there to learn?"

"You need to know how to use your ability. Even if you know how to hunt it'll do you no good if you can't even get your prey to come to you."

He slipped out the window and waited for me to follow. Then we made our way to a rugged part of town. "You should start out with easy people. Homeless people have so little to think about that they're easy to control."

He pointed to a older man leaning on a street lamp. "Make him walk across the street."

I frowned. "How?"

"Focus on him and try to imagine him walking across the street. It'd be great if you could make him skip." He said with a grin.

I nodded and looked back at the old man. I frowned and concentrated on making him move. I thought I would make a fool of myself but, he suddenly smiled brightly and skipped his way to the other side of the street and spun around the lamp post before he leaned back on it and closed his eyes again.

Jasper laughed. "Hey! You did it. Most of the time it takes a few tries. You did good."

I rolled my eyes. "Please, don't fake praise me."

"I'm not. I really meant what I said. It took me a few days of practice before I could even get someone to scratch their head." He grinned. "You have talent."

"Jasper! Hey!"

We were suddenly interrupted and Jasper quickly turned around, blocking me from the guy's line of sight. "Colby. What's up?"

"I was just passing by and I happened to spot you over here." The guy, Colby said.

I peeked around Jasper's back and saw it was that guy from before. The one who had been at the old building that Jasper took me to.

He glanced at me and rose an eyebrow. "Isn't that the same kid you had last time I saw you? You know that's against the rules, right?"

Jasper shrugged. "Well, I'm not keeping him prisoner or anything so I'm not doing anything wrong."

He smiled at me. "Oh, so you're his boyfriend."

My face flushed and I glared at him. "Excuse me?"

"Does he know?" He asked, going back to talking with Jasper. "You know that if you tell him he has to go."

"Colby, could you cut it out? What do you want?" Jasper semed irritated with him.

"I just want to know what you're doing hangin' out with a human boy? He's not exactly your type either."

Jasper scoffed. "Like you know what my type is. Just go away."

Colby frowned. "You're not usually like this. What's up?"

"I don't like sharing. You keep butting in and it's annoying. I don't want to have a fight." Jasper said. I frowned behind him and felt my hands and teeth clench. "Jasper-"

He shot me a look that said, shut-it and closed my mouth. He turned back to Colby and put his hands on his hips. "Now, please. Go away. I'm busy."

Colby didn't look happy but, he turned away none the less. Jasper seemed satisfied and went back to me. But, for some reason Colby stopped. "No." He laughed and turned back. "Nice one. You almost had me."

Jasper tensed and glanced at me. "Vlad, I think you should-"

"He's not human, is he?" Colby said with a smirk.

Jasper licked his lips and shrugged. "Where did you get that idea? Of course-"

"Where's he from?" Colby asked, his eyes running me up and down. "Did he just move here or something? I don't recognize him."

"Colby!" Jasper burst out. "Go away."

Colby ignored him completely and held out his hand to me. "Hi, I'm Colby Tuin."

I hesitantly shook his hand. "Vlad Chori."

Jasper glared at Colby. "I'm warning you. Stay away from him."

"What's up with you, Jasper? You love showing off your new boyfriends."

"I'm not his boyfriend." I said quickly.

Colby frowned. "But-"

"I'm not. We barely know each other actually. We met by accident and he's been helping me a little."

Jasper was looking more and more frustrated when he finally growled out, "Whatever! I don't know why I bothered to care. You teach him."

With that, he turned on his heel and walked away. I frowned and glanced at Colby. "Is he always like that?"
