Chapter 14

I sighed as the thick air grew more tense with every passing minute. After dinner Jasper and I had confiscated the PlayStation and were playing Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, a game that usually Ben and I played together. When my younger brother walked out into the living room to find my betrayal, he had narrowed his eyes and dropped onto the couch with a sour expression. The atmosphere had been uncomfortable ever since.

Now, as Jasper glanced at me out if the corner of his eye, I sighed. "I'm gonna grab us some sodas. You want to play for a while, Ben?"

He eyed Jasper with a scornful gaze before he stood up and took my controller, settling down next to my secret boyfriend. Jasper gave me a glare over his shoulder, but I shrugged it off and went into the kitchen. After getting three bottles of coke, I walked back into the living room, and stopped short. Ben was standing over Jasper looking like he was going to blow and Jasper was just sitting on the floor with his arms crossed, looking annoyed. "Guys?" I asked as I set the soda on the coffee table.

Ben glared at me as he stormed out of the room. "I'm telling mom." He said.

I almost choked and grabbed his arm to stop him. "Telling her what?"

"That your 'friend' is a jerk." He said.

He left the room and I slapped Jasper's shoulder. "What the hell was that?" I asked.

He rolled his eyes. "I didn't do anything..." He grumbled.

I scoffed. "Obviously you did. What did you say to him?"

He was silent for a moment before he shrugged. "That he shouldn't hog you all to himself." He paused, his ears turning pink. "And... that he better get used to us being together because it wasn't going to change..."

I gaped at him. "You practically all but told him we were dating!" I half-shrieked. "What if my parents find out?!"

"Then you'll just have to explain it to them." He said irritablly. "It's not like they'll never find out."

I plopped down on the floor next to him and leaned my back against his shoulder, covering my face with my hands. This was a disaster.

I was mumbling miserably to myself when Jasper looped an arm around my neck and kissed behind my ear gently. "I'm sorry, okay?" He said softly.

I tilted my head back so I could see him. He looked sincere, his eyes expressing true remorse for his actions. I sighed. "I can't be mad at you." I muttered. "But don't go getting on my brother's bad side. He's really not someone you wanna mess with."

Jasper smiled. "Understood."

We played games for a little while longer before Jasper said he had to get home. I walked him to the door. "Will I see you tomorrow?" I asked, hoping I wouldn't have to go look for blood on my own.

Unfortunately, Jasper said he had something important to do. I offered to at least walk him home, but he told me it he didn't want me walking back by myself, which I found kind of annoying, but decided not to argue. I didn't particularly want to walk alone anyways.

After sneaking in a quick kiss, he headed off. I watched him go sadly before I closed the door and sighed. I had to admit it, he made my head spin. In a good way. The kind of way that made me happy and tingly all the way down to my toes.

However, after turning around, I came face-to-face with my younger brother. He was standing by the stairs with his arms crossed. He looked pissed. I crossed my own arms and leaned on the door. "Why were you being so rude?" I asked.

He gave me a look of disbelief. "Me? He was the one-"

"Ben, you can't just be so hostile everytime you decide you don't like someone." I cut him off. "Jasper didn't do anything to you until you started getting edgy."

"Vlad-"

"Learn to keep your man period in check." I snapped, still not letting him talk. "End of story."

He fumed angrily as I passed him to go up to my room and stepped in front of me. "I don't trust him." He said in a low voice.

I gave him a questioning look and he shifted nervously. "It's more than that, he's... weird."

"He's a friend of mine and if you can't learn to get along with him, I'll stop sharing my desserts with you." I said. Ben looked upset with my lack of interest, but I just brushed past him and went to my room. He was being ridiculous. What was there to not trust about Jasper?

*******

"No, you can't 'come with'." I said shortly. It was the next day and I was just about to leave to go find food. Vampire food.

"You're just going to the store." Ben grumbled. He was pouting as I slipped my shoes on. "Plus, it's a Sunday. Everyone else is doing last minute homework, I don't have anything to do."

"Well, that sucks." I said, my patience wearing thin as my hunger began to reach it's peak. "I'm not babysitting you anymore."

He tried to protest more, but I hurried out the door. I all but ran to the other side of town, ducking down into a nearby alley. After taking a moment to clear my head, because damn, I had almost attacked some sales guy in the middle of the street, I began to pick out my prey. Let's see... there was a couple of parents walking with their daughter which I quickly trashed as an option, there were some skinny teenagers hanging at a nearby shop, a few stragglers making their way home from work and- oh. Perfect.

I narrowed my eyes at a tall, well-built business man walking down the street with a briefcase, nose buried in his phone. Jasper told me the more distracted a person was from their surroundings, the easier they were to curve from their path. Everything seemed to melt away as I focused on the man. He didn't even look up from his phone as he walked straight into the alley and around a secluded corner.

I stepped behind him silently, careful to remember the directions Jasper had given me. Before the man even realized where he was, I looped an arm around his neck and sank my teeth into the soft flesh around his blood vessel. For a moment, as the rich, warm blood slid over my tongue, my control faulter and the man gasped, dropping his phone in surprise. However, I regained control seconds later and slowly the man dropped to his knees, allowing me better access.

Blood is better than it sounds. It's tangy, sweet, and as the fresh red juices slipped down my throat, I could feel my engery replenishing itself. It may not be a fresh-out-of-the-oven Martha Stewart dinner, but it was pretty damn good. Unfortunately however, it could only last so long and after a couple minutes I pulled away, my hunger sated. The man was conscious, but his eyes were dazed as I gently layed him on his back. "So sorry." I whispered before hurrying away.

As soon as I was a safe distance from that location, I took a deep breath of relief. Believe it or not, hunting wasn't easy. It took a lot of concentration and I was always worried I was going to get caught. Wiping a dribble of drying blood from my chin, I brushed myself off. It was getting late. My mom would probably be upset if stayed out to long.

Just as I was making my way towards the street, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I paused and scanned the darkening alleyway cautiously. However, seeing nothing I shrugged. Probably just a stray cat or something. I laughed at myself for being so on edge. Jasper's skiddish behavior must be leaking over to me.
