Chapter Three: Hidden.
Do you know how sad it is to only appreciate the little things in life, when life itself is going through hell? How hard it is to concept that the world that we know is coming to an end, where the wild life that once lived in the surrounding woods are now slowly disappearing, and the sweet songs that the birds once sang has now come to a silence. We can no longer see the beautiful skies, the red, orange, and yellow, the blue and the puffy, white clouds. We can no longer see the nature and what lives within it, there is no god.
Only Hell.
Because the skies are forever grey, stretched out for miles on end. The suffering is continuous, pain and sorrow is infectious as it coats every part of us. We are repeatedly changing along with the world around us, adapting, restyling the very human we are to fit around our surroundings that are unpredictable. This world is no longer peaceful but filled with rotting flesh and things we wouldn't have been able to explain years ago. This world is filled with an invisible flame that is slowly burning everyone, licking our flesh as if we are a candy. The tips of the mountain are covered by thick dark snow, it wasn't silky white snow, but snow possessed by the evil that controlled the world around us, nothing in this hell hole was beautiful nor was is it perfect, it was just pure evil and darkness. This is no longer the world we use to live in. Its as if everything that once lived here is... Hidden.
Theo and I decided that it might be safer to travel off the road and on the trails on the local woods that surrounded the cities. In this part the cities are opposite each other making the woods that were around it the only barrier, and only a few trails would run through them connecting them along with the roads. Even travelling along the trails were dangerous as the Hunters could easily find us by just following the trail.
"Maybe we should get off the trails all together, we have gone this far we don't want to be caught now." Theo's suggestion was correct, maybe we should get off the trails, in that way no one can follow us. Walking a little bit further we decided that this was far enough, we had a plan to make whoever may follow us think we have gone further than we really have.
I looked behind me at my footsteps, taking careful steps back we managed to make no extra footprints meaning our single ones going one way was the only ones visible. Once off the trails we went deeper into the woods, making sure to keep enough distance away from the trails. Before we left we gathered supplies from the supermarkets and made a stop at my old cottage before heading out of the city. We were well packed for the journey ahead of us.
I learnt a lot about Theo, but I feel as if he was hiding something from me. I didn't think much of it as we only just met and it would be a little weird if he told me everything all at once, then there would be no surprise or anything else to really talk about. I told him about my brother, and how he went to go live with The Hunters for a day, and how after that he started turning into a SkinWalker, I told him how I had to shoot him and how I then burnt my old house down. I didn't tell him everything, just the facts that he needed to know. I kept a lot of pain and sorrow within me, stuff that shouldn't be held in but is. One day I'll be able to let it go, and to be free from those burdens.
"We should find somewhere to set up camp for the night, it looks like we might only have an hour left of light." Theo suggested, I hummed a response as I was already tired of the long day that we had. My tummy growled as it protested about not having food, Theo chucked softly as held an amused smile.
"Seems like food is also on our menu," he added as we looked for somewhere that would serve as a temporary camp. We found an area where it was well sheltered from the eyes of people, it was also a good place if it rained. It was untouched so that must have meant we were the first ones to find and use this place, meaning no one else knows about this little hide away. It was a small cave that was carved into the side of a cliff, many trees were in front of it; their branches and leafs served as walls of protection. The ground was smooth as the rocks surfaces were flat, if there had been sun then the rocks would have been warm. This was a perfect place and I wanted to stay here longer than one night, maybe if I talked with Theo about this idea then we could.
"What would you like for dinner?" The question was something I was never asked for a few years, my brother and I just ate whatever we had, we didn't have much of an option.
"Ummm... Just whatever I guess," I replied with something I hope was appropriate.
"Ummm ok.... What about rice and spam?" That did sound nice, I haven't had spam for a while now and my mouth watered at the thought of tasting it again. Quickly nodding my head as I eagerly replied.
"Hahaha ok then, you get the sleeping area ready and i'll go and collect wood for the fire, we need to get this done before the sky becomes dark." He was right, once the sky is dark It's best to stay inside, or wherever your shelter is. Stranger and deadly things creep around in the dark, things that can rip you apart within seconds.
Theo told me he would be back in a few minutes, so I got to work on the sleeping area. I swept away most of the dirt and made sure everything was cleanish before heading out of the cave to the near by trees. I found a tree with leafs that were as big as my body, it's amazing how the trees change with the events thats happening, they have also evolved. I cut down about ten of those leafs and dropped them outside the cave then went back to collect some dry grass I saw just a few meters away from the cave. I brought a few large rubbish bags and I started to fill them up with the dead grass. Making sure not to get any twigs or stones as I pulled and cut them. As soon as the bags were full I headed back towards the cave, Theo was already back and starting the fire. I emptied the bags of dried grass on the ground where I cleaned, making sure they were evenly spread, then I placed the large leaves on top of the dried grass making a mattress. Taking out the sheets that we collected from my cabin and placing them on top of the makeshift mattress, I then took out the blow up pillows and blew them up, placing them on the bed. Taking a step back to admire my work.
"Dinners ready!" Theo called out,
"Damn that was fast!" I was shocked at how fast he had cooked dinner and I was extremely hungry when I smelt how delicious It was.
I sat down on the floor of the cave as Theo started to plate up, he gave us both two slices of spam and a cup each of rice. He then poured us water and he too then sat on the ground. After a few minutes of us eating I decided to open the topic of staying here for a while.
"So I was thinking we could stay here for a while, you know relax and decide where to go next." I hope he could tell that I really wanted to stay and that my idea was a good one. Theo looked up from his plate a nodded slowly as he thought.
"Yeah sure, I mean this cave is well hidden, we hid our tracks well and its comfortable. I see no reason why we couldn't stay here for a while." Happy with my answer I finished my meal, placing the plate in a small bucket ready to be washed the next day.
The fire was still blazing, lighting up the cave. The trees and their branches kept the warmth in so it was cozy, the night was quiet and I decided to read. Pulling out my book about how to get over the guilt of killing someone, I settled myself down on the bed.
'How to get over the fact that you have ended someones life. Ask yourself, did that person deserve it and if so why? Why did you feel the need to kill that person? Once you have established the reasons and factors on why you killed that person then you can go onto step 3, "How to rid yourself of blame." (Page 56, Chapter 3)'
I felt the bed dip slightly as Theo sat down, he got himself comfortable as a few minutes of moving around.
"So what are you reading?" He tilted his head to the side slightly as if trying to see the title of the book.
"I'm reading 'Steps of overcoming guilt,' its to help me get over the guilt I feel after killing my only family I had left."
"You know its not your fault and you had to do what you had to do," Theo placed a hand on my shoulder as he tried to comfort me, his small gesture meant so much. It felt like he cared.
"Yeah, a promise is a promise." I closed my book and laid down, the fire had died down and the flames were dead. The cave was now glowing with light of the embers. I felt Theo also settled down for the night, pulling the blanket closer to him as he snuggled down.
"Goodnight Evie," Theo would whisper in a soft and sleepy voice.
"Goodnight Theo," I replied with my own sleepy voice.
Tomorrow is yet another day, and I wonder what tomorrow will bring.
