Chapter 22 The Magic
POV: Scott
My little corner with its comfy chair and empty shelf was working out well. Something about being surrounded by books, even the smell of the dusty aging pages seemed to be conducive to creativity. Something about this library seemed almost magical. As I write, what I'm writing seems to come to life in my mind. What to write next becomes obvious. I understand why Zelda always does her writing here at the library.
Magic got me thinking about, my grandmother's book. I opened it and saw that more had been added to it. Some of what I had written and a lot that I hadn't. The additions provided additional perspectives, yet the plot and flow of the story remained consistent. The story seemed to be documenting what was actually happening to me. I wondered, was it just documenting or was it also predicting? Was this more of the magic of the library? I decided not to worry about it for now and just enjoy the writing experience.
I was leaning back into the chair cushions and had my laptop propped up on my legs. I had a great idea for a plot using the star-crossed-lovers trope. I was beginning to feel like a real writer using fancy words like "trope." I had my characters pretty much worked out. I was basing them on the people I had met since coming to town as well as myself and some of those from my past. I was making significant progress when I was interrupted by Donna. "My, you look comfortable," she said.
I asked her, "What brings you here? Are you picking up the latest updates to Zelda's book?"
"No, I came to see you."
That cheered me up. I was beginning to think there might be something to this soulmate thing. I was looking forward to our next date. To think I originally had a crush on Zelda. That would have been a disaster considering who our families are.
Donna seems like a much better match. I was starting to really like her. In fact, in my book, I have the character that is based on me falling for the character I based on Donna. That fiction was rapidly becoming a reality.
"So, are you here to discuss our next date?" I asked.
"In a way," she said hesitantly. "I'm here to tell you there won't be a next date. Scott, I'm pretty sure we are not soulmates. I'm thinking that you should give Zelda a chance."
"Are you kidding? She has shown no interest in me at all. And now that I know our families are mortal enemies, the idea of soulmates seems completely out of the question.
"Have you considered the possibility that the two of you could bring about a truce between your families?"
"If you think that is a possibility, you really don't know our families very well."
I really don't, but I do know Zelda. I think you will find her interest in you has taken a positive turn. I've suspected all along that you have been interested in her. I think you should act on those feelings. I understand your concerns about your family feud, but logic has no place when it comes to love." She leaned over and kissed my cheek. "I've got to go now keep in mind what I said," she finished and left.
I was surprised that I wasn't more heartbroken. Donna was right though. Deep down I was still attracted to Zelda. I just couldn't believe she'd be attracted to me. I might have to make that change in my book. Maybe the magic of the library could bring Zelda and me together.
