[Chapter Five]
Just over four million people are subscribed to my social media accounts, and even that isn't enough to let everything that's happened over the last few months sink in.
I'm a famous singer - I get to live out my dreams.
Everyone's still on the hunt, desperate to uncover the girl behind the mask. They'd even dedicated episodes of popular talk shows to discuss their theories, even resorted to begging for an answer. But I adore this mysterious vibe and the confidence that comes with it.
I want to tell Mum and Hannah that the girl they so desperately cling to actually live down the hall from them, but I'm worried about what they might say.
However, I worry that they might say something by accident and my whole masked identity goes up in flames. The Masked Singer needs to stay like that for now, because being Riley Brenton didn't sound too appealing.
"What are you thinking about," Lucy asks.
It's our first weekend for our summer break, but all I want to do is hide under my blanket and avoid the real world. Too many decisions needed to be made, and I don't feel up to the task just yet.
"Thinking about my future," I reply.
"What about it?" Lucy rolls onto her side so that she can look at me.
"Do I make something out of TMS, or do I just keep it as a hobby on the side? I love music, but do I really love it enough to spend the rest of my life just doing that?" A pondering look crosses Lucy's face.
"If you sign onto something serious, there's no going back. You can't turn it off like a YouTube channel."
As always, Lucy's nuggets of wisdom are right; signing up to a record label would mean that I would have more obligations than uploading the odd singing video here and there. I'd have to agree to complete a lot more things that a low quality singing video. This isn't a decision to be taken lightly.
"You're the only one I can talk to about this," I grimly say.
Lucy climbs off the bed and sits in front me, her face mirroring my gloomy one. "You know, this whole thing is more than we can handle, maybe you should consider telling them?"
A small giggle escapes my lips, and then a loud chuckle. "They wouldn't believe me, even if I told them."
"What if they do? You've got a bigger support network then."
"I might tell them," I whisper.
My parents are going to think I'm completely crazy when I first tell them, but after that it should be interesting to see what they will do. Scream in excitement or frustration. Mum and Hannah would be happy considering their obsession. However I'm not sure how my father feels about this whole thing.
"Do it tonight and get it over and done with," encourages Lucy.
"I'll do it at dinner," I say.
"I believe in you!" Lucy shuffles away from her bed and sits in front of my movie collection stacked under my bed. She starts pulling out different movies and handing them to me.
"What are you doing?" I ask.
"Seems appropriate to start a horror movie marathon."
"How so?" I frown.
"Because you can scream at the television as much as you want and people won't judge you for it." I laugh along with her.
Screaming and venting seemed like a good stress reliever for the moment. I need to let out this bad energy before I get to dinner tonight.
Three movies later, a popcorn fight and another two movies later. Lucy leaves with her hoodie pulled over her eyes and I sit down in front of a plate full of food I cannot stomach because of the nerves and the horror movies.
"So..." I awkwardly say.
"My day was amazing!" Hannah charges off into a long explanation of what she did with her friends and where they went.
I slump back into my chair and stab a potato with my fork, then swirling it through the puddle of gravy.
"What's the matter darling?" Mum asks.
"Nothing," I dismiss.
Looking back down at the potatoes, I then glance back up at Mum who's sporting a sincere smile. I feel that thirty seconds of courage surging through my body and I know it's time to start confessing my secret life.
"- and Rosie and I were-"
"I have something to say," I rudely interrupt Hannah. I shoot her an 'I'm-so-sorry' look, but she just screws her face up and looks away. Although I still manage to capture the attention of my parents.
"What is it?" Dad asks with a smile, prompting me to keep going.
"I'm um," I stutter, now that I have their attention, I can't find the words.
"You what honey?" Dad asks.
"I'm well, it started a couple of months ago." I bite my lips.
"Just skip to the end already," complains Hannah.
"I am-"
"Shoot, I just remembered I left the oven on, I'll be back in a second." Mum jumps out of her seat and charges of into the direction of the kitchen.
"You're a dork," Hannah finishes with a playful expression.
"Shut up Hannah," I snap at her.
"Girls," Dad hushes.
"What did I miss?" Mum asks as she walks back into the dining room.
"Well, I was going to say-"
"Spit it out."
"I'm The Masked Singer," I shout.
The table falls silent and everyone is looking at me with shocked expressions. I look between the three, trying to figure out who is going to say something first. But nobody peeps a word and I'm at a loss for what I should do.
Singing is the only thing that comes to mind. You can't disapprove of something like this if it's staring you right in the face. They're going to have to believe me now.
Squeezing my eyes shut, I inhale deeply and open my mouth, willing for words to come out. I start to sing. "This is my confession, my one and only word, so sit tight and just..." I drag the note out. "Oh, listen to my words. Here me out, I'm calling on you, yeah. Saying things you never thought, letting the truth pour out, because I'm tired of these games," I sing.
I open my eyes and see them still standing in front of me with their shocked expressions. But the flicker of emotion on Mum's face throws the silence out of the window.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Her shocked appearance is long gone, now replaced with a sad expression.
"Because I was scared."
"But we love you and support you, Riley, always." She gets up from her seat and runs over to hug me.
"Promise me you won't tell anyone," I say.
"We certainly can't let this get out," Dad agrees.
"What happens next?" asks Mum.
"I was hoping to check out some record labels to see if I could try my hand at recording," I say.
"That sounds really exciting! Let's start looking now." Mum abandons her dinner and runs off in search of her iPad.
"After dinner Hun," Dad calls out.
"Right." She returns to the room.
I take a deep breath and relax into my chair. Telling my family wasn't as bad as I expected. However the tough work is trying to find someone to record music with. I don't want to get trapped into something I don't like.
"After dinner we'll search through your available options," Dad explains, "But you need to show me everything." I nod my head in agreement.
"Sure can do!"
Dinner ends on a pleasant note. I get out of dishes and Hannah has to take over the role so that I can show Mum and Dad the offers I've gotten from record labels. Some are an easy scrub out, but the more expensive ones are hard to chop from the growing list of one's I'd like to pick from. Some have a better recording studio, while others have a better turn out of musicians – home names and awards won.
After research, pondering and questioning. We settle on one record label that we think is the best choice to have. Del Ray Recordings doesn't sound like the best title in the world but the state of the art recording equipment and famous names attached to it give it an instant liking towards my favour.
"When do you think we could visit Del Ray Recordings?" I ask.
"Your father is supposed to fly out to New York tomorrow," Mum hints.
"I'll call and see if we can get a second seat on the aircraft." Dad gets up from his position on the couch and walks towards his office.
Five minutes trickly by and I can't stand the wait. I understand things aren't going to be sorted out in seconds, but the waiting is still a pain.
"Riley?"
"Yes?" I look at her worriedly.
"Why didn't you tell me about this?" Her soft brown eyes linger on my face before deflecting to the ground.
"I was scared."
"I want you to know you can talk to me about anything, anything in the world!" She grimly smiles.
"Thanks." I nod my head thoughtfully.
"Even if you feel like you can't talk to me, just try honey. I want to support you through your endeavours as much as I can. You're my baby girl and I'll always love and protect you."
"I really appreciate it, Mum." I give her a tight hug and soak in the warmth radiating from her body.
Just as we pull away, Dad comes charging into the room with a broad smile.
"Pack your bags Riley, we're going to New York City!"
"Oh my gosh, seriously?" I scream with excitement.
"Yes, so start packing your bags we have an earlier flight."
"I need to tell Lucy! She's going to flip when I tell her the good news." I jump out of the chair and run up to my bedroom to start packing. I can't believe how relieved I'm feeling, and what prospects this adventure will bring me. This roller coaster of life is taking an upwards turn.
